In Extremo perform an aggressive brand of medieval metal that includes percussion, harp, and homemade bagpipes. Like German countrymen Rammstein, this group eschews English; but unlike Rammstein, In Extremo's frontman sings (or rather growls) in dead languages. Their lone song in English is the unexpectedly catchy cover of Sisters of Mercy's "This Corrosion." As one might expect, Verehrt und Angespien rocks pretty hard; even ethno-punkers with a taste for Boiled in Lead and Garmarna might get off on In Extremo's ancient folk with a modern kick. This was my first In Extremo cd that I bought which turned me into a huge fan of theirs. If you don't know these guys play a mixture of rock and medievel music. Their rock sound is a mixture of metal, hard rock and some punk andthey get their medievel sound with bagpipes, the harp, a violin and other types of instruments. The lyrics are a mixture of German and dead languages like Latin, Old German, Old Swedish and there's also a song in English. I would have to say that this is their heaviest cd compared to their other one and it's their 2nd rawest sounding one compared to their first one.

So if you like metal or medievel folk music then you should buy this cd and their other ones. I've let other people listen to these guys who thought that medievel rock didn't sound right but after listening to it they liked it so I'm sure you will too even if you're bit bit skeptical about it.

A good buy.......2005-03-03

I was expecting something a little more industrial, while the singing/drumming style for this album is a little closer to punk (and I normally despise punk). The mixture of folk and hard rock is still awesome though. Some of it sounds kinda like a German version of Metallica with some cool folk instruments. If you're a hardcore Rammstein fan, this album may or may not be to your liking; there's really no good comparison. If you want something a little more industrial, try Eisbrecher; otherwise you might just want to check this CD out.

Folk rock still rocks.......2004-10-07

A terrific sophmore release from the german medival band. Spielmannsfluch is my favorite track. Much better guitar riffs this time around than their first album. Definitly a recommendation for any fan of German music.

Melodic Agressive Folk Metal........2004-09-15

In Extremo is the greatest band in the world, they truly bring tears to my eyes. The spirit of their music is overwhelming and their use of bagpipes, harps, and traditional instruments really stirs up feelings of pride and nationalism. This music is incredibly uplifting. I also enjoyed their albums "Weckt die Toten" and "Suender Ohne Zuegel".

There really needs to be more music like this out there with real passion and zeal. In a time when we have forgotten our European roots and heritage, this band truly seems to be a light in the darkness.

Unjustly underappreciated!.......2003-07-05

It seems that the only place to buy In Extremo is on-line, where as CDs by bands like Rammstein are in stock at places like Borders. That's just wrong. These guys are beyond awesome. It's ingenius how they mix their heavy metal with mideval instruments, especially the bagpipes! It may sound bad, but it's not. Verehrt und Angespien is brilliant!! The best song is Spielmannsfluch (Minstrel's Curse). It has such a catchy refrain. Ich Kenne Alles (I Know All) is cool too. A really intresting thing about IE is that Das letzte Einhorn, aka Michael Rhein, sings in all kinds of different languages, not just German. Like Rammstein's Sehnsucht, there is a track on this CD in English, but unlike Till Lindemann, Das letzte Einhorn pulls off english very well. Don't get me wrong, I like Rammstein. It's just that I think In Extremo's so much better. Do yourself a favour and buy this CD!

They have done it again. On this cd they changed their sound a bit which might anger you or please you depending on how you felt about their other cd's. There are slight industrial elements thrown in, there are quite a few ballads, the songs aren't as raw sounding and the bagpipes aren't all over the place. Also there are more songs sung in German than before, they also have songs sung in Icelandic, Hebrew and Latin. The ballads are very beautiful and they really grab at you even if you don't understand the lyrics. I think it's because the medievel instrumets like the bagpipes and harp bring out the emotions of the song. There are also some good headbanging songs with fast catchy guitar riffs
If you put the disc in the computer you will be able to see a music video for Vollmond and you get to see clips from concerts and interviews, there's also a biography, discography and pictures.

So if you would like to hear In Extremo's more evolved sound then you should get this cd right now, no questions asked.

bagpipes, lutes and headbanging guitars..........2004-07-20

I own two previous albums by In Extremo- "Verehrt and Angespien" and "Weck die Toten" and I play them all the time. I love the mix of medieval instruments and modern electric guitars and drums. They blend seamlessly together, creating very melodic but powerful songs. They usually start mildly, then gather tempo, and by the end of the song your whole body is vibrating with the rhythm. And the bagpipes are just awesome, they make you want to dance around the fire!
I got finally my hands on Sunder Ohne Zugel, and I am a tiny bit disappointed. It seems that In Extremo is steering toward mainstream hard rock sound, which is OK, but they are loosing some of their originality. The album is heavy on guitar riffs, fast and powerful. It has some tender moments, the ballad "Die Gier", then there is Merseburger Zaubersprüche II (the first opens Verehrt and Angespien and it's fantastic!) sounding like a hymn. My favorite track is No. 8 Omnia Sol Temperat - where In Extremo sounds just glorious.

I give this album 4 out of 5 stars (the first two being 5, they come close to perfection). This is a great rock album, very enjoyable and with enough class to stand out from the crowd of rock bands. And if you ever have a chance to see them live, go for it! They put up a fantastic show, complete with fire, lights and great costumes. They look like they should be wielding swords not guitars, but they give all they have and then some!

Medival history, music, and intruments.......2004-01-09

Sunder ohne Zugel is by far one of the best albums i've heard yet. it's a colage of different languages and music. most songs are in German, though there's also Icelandic,Latin, Hebrew,and what i think is old French. most of the tracks are a headbangin' good time (as long as you like bagpipes, but there are also some sweet ballads mixed in. most of the songs have roots in Medieval history, and the guys of In Extremo have done an amazing job searching them out. I highly recomend this album, and any other album by In Extremo to anyone who is in the least bit interested.

Refreshingly Different.......2003-11-19

Excellent CD from beginning to end, If they ever tour the US in the future I WILL be there. All songs are in German and even if you don't understand it doesn't matter, the feelings are the same. To say that they are talented and enjoy their music would be an understatement.

Sünder ohne Zügel.......2003-11-19

Homeade innstruments and an unparalleled medieval apeal to a strange soul like me make these german minstrials hands down my favorite band.
A bit less medieval and more industrial than the two earlier releases I own ("Verehrt und angespien" and "Weckt die Toten"), I loved this cd all the same.
It opens with "Wind", a great song that you can feel throbbing through every fibre of your being.
Most of my friends really feel "Vollmond". I get the feeling that this song is supposed to be the comprehensive song on the cd. If In Extremo was mainstream, they probably would have chosen "Vollmond" for radio play. I like the song, to, but it is a little too electronic for my taste.
My personal favorite would have to be the stunning ballod "Die Gier". I love the way the percussion builds up from the end of a verse to the chorus.
All in all, this an excellent example of what these guys are capable of, but I highly recommend obtaining some of these metal gods' earlier releases. Fünf Sterne!!!

This In Extremo album has a more folksy element to it than their later realeases. Listening to this type of music makes you want to get up and dance a meery jig of sorts and bang your head at the same time like on the song Como Poden. The majority of the songs are sung in dead languages and only a few are done in german. Some people might think that medievel rock might suck but they will think differntly about it after hearing these guys. So in short I would recommend this cd to anyone who likes rock whether or not it has medievel instruments thrown in because either way you'll like it.

Bagpipes Maximus.......2005-07-08

Of the three In Extremo albums I have, this is my favorite. The songs are a little slower and tend more towards hard rock than on the other albums. Basically what you get is early metal style hard rock with bagpipes, and guttural, German sounding vocals. Supposedly the songs are all traditional from various cultures, and the musicians made their own bagpipes. Great for dancing around the bonfire.

Heil In Extremo!.......2003-11-10

In Extremo is by far the most popular of the Mediaeval cross-genre groups out there. A lot of people who are into In Extremo (mostly outside of Europe) that I talk to aren't aware of the major "NeoMediaeval" music scene dominating the European underground. If you like In Extremo check out Die Verbannten Kinder Evas, Tanzwut, Corvus Corax, Finisterra, Hekate, Antichrisis, und Hagalaz Runedance (those are just some of the more popular artists). Also check out Germany's record label Zoomshot/Angelwings for fantastic compilations

This is a great CD. I love the way In Extremo combine Bagpipes and other "folk" type insturments with somewhat heavy guitar!

See The Wolf.......2002-05-01

Holy macaroni, this CD by In Extremo is HOT -- I was pretty much basting in my own juices listening to this here mix of rough and ready heavy metal riffage and medieval instruments 'n' blowey-thingees. I'm a deep down sucker for ye olde tunes done in a folk-rock stylee, but this is something else! It all kicks off mighty fine with 'Ai Vis Lo Lop,' a tune I know from Breton music...The power chords crunch, and the bass and drums and pipes kick this monster into another realm altogether: yeah, it's metal, but it's a sexy beast of metal. 'Weckt die Toten!' is a very spare sounding record; In Extremo's next ('Worshipped and Spat At') is more produced. But on this here CD, you get one of the best miked spittings of all time, as the lead singer winds up and hucks one during a tune! ...

Tanzwut.......2006-09-16

This band is definately different in that they use bagpipes but not in the scottish way such as amazing grace. No, they use it with faster tempo say about 110 bpm. Its not just random notes. I would recommend this band for anyone that likes Rammstein too as far as the tempo and feel of the music. I think Corvus Corax does not match with this type of music although it too contains bagpipes but its more of that growly grung music if I remember correctly.

I love this stuff........2005-04-04

I heard about Tanzwut from a friend who showed me their website and played the audio samples there for me. I almost immediately tracked down this CD on ebay. I just got it in the mail a couple days ago, and it's hardly left my CD player since. As a matter of fact, I'm listening to it as I'm writing this. The fusion of metal/industrial with medieval music creates a pretty unusual sound, but it works. I've been playing it for friends and telling everyone I know who I think would like them about this band. More people need to know about this. Now I want to get a hold of their other CDs too. This might prove to be a challenge. Favorite tracks: "Meer", "Für Immer", "Fatue", "Erdberrot", "Der Fluch".

Tanzwut grows on you with every album.......2004-12-18

Tanzwut's third studio album, and their best yet. I learned about the group from a fairly common way, by being steered there through bands like In Extremo and Subway to Sally. Tanzwut creates a unique sound, mixing the Neo-Medieval, or Volke-Metal, or whatever they call the fusion of Hard Rock with Medieval Folk music with influences from electronic and indstrial. Tanzwut's strongest element is their highly effective choruses, and this album is a good example. But they also expand beyond the scope covered by their first two efforts, particularly with Fatue and Campona. Fatue is hard guitars mixed with great choral chanting reminicent of gregorian chants. The album starts off with Wieder da, a great song and good start that gradually builds to personal favorites like Track 4: Meer and Track 5 Zaubern. Overall a great album that shows Tanzwut at their best.

Rock und mittelalter!.......2004-10-21

Auf Tanzwut bin ich über mein Faible für Mittelalterrock gekommen: die Gruppe Corvus Corax mag eine der angesagtesten Mittelalterbands sein, ihr Alter Ego ist aber für die Rockfans zuständig.
Tanzwut ist eine gute Mischung aus Mittelalter, Metal, Elektro und Dancefloor. Die mittelalterlichen Wurzeln erkennt man deutlich an den Stücken Â„Fatue" und Â„Caupona", aber ansonsten sind Tanzwut in erster Linie eine Rockband mit Dudelsack, deren Stücke mit treibenden Beats (mal auch im Ska- oder Discorhythmus) eher zum Abtanzen als zum Headbangen geeignet sind. Sie sind musikalisch das Bindeglied zwischen Rammstein und In Extremo. Von textliche Schwächen wie in "Nein Nein" sollte man da absehen, andere Stücke wie "Meer" machen das wieder wett.
Vom Inhalt her sind die Lieder wohl am Ehesten im Gothic/Wave-Bereich angesiedelt, aber dank der schelmischen Stimme von Frontmann Teufel kommen die Stücke so frisch und frech rüber, dass auch andere Rockfans ihren Gefallen daran finden können.

Die Lieder enthalten außerdem ein großes Live-Potential (z.B. in Â„Wieder da" und Â„Ihr wolltet Spaß"), sodass diese CD eine gute Einstimmung auf das nächste Tanzwut-Konzert ist.

Many In Extremo fans think this album is a shame for the band. In Extremo use to includes a lot more bagpipes and melodic tricks in their tunes but this powerful mix of heavy guitar, keyboard, harp, bagpipes and other instruments is just sublime. In Extremo at its best! If you're not familiar yet with this strong band, begin here. I'd recommend this album to any industrial, gothic, hard rock or metal lover.

this is a cool album. i really like it. even my mom likes it! that's pretty amazing since she grew up listening to john denver and other [stuff]. my favorite song would be.... i guess it's Stetit Puella. it's such a strong song. i think you should buy this album, just for the fun of it at the very least.

They've done it again!.......2002-05-01

I once did a review of the album "Vererht un Angespien" and if you read it, you already know how high I hold this band in regard. On this album, they seem to be going for a less harsh sound on the majority of the tracks, though in most the heavy metal guitar riffs rage gloriously on! there are some mellow, melodic, and very pretty songs on here. on verehrt und angespien, they had melody that absolutely [rocked] and in this it still does only in a more ballad-like approach. The bagpipes still cause me to shake my head in admiration, for I never thought that guitars and medieval music (bagpipe, harp, flute, etc.) would all fit together, but they do! My favorite songs include Die Gier, Uber den Wolken, Vollmond, and der raetenfinger, just to name a few. But I can honestly say that, like in all of in extremo's albums, every single song is a masterpiece. I suggest not waiting until june 4th to order it from the states. import it and enjoy!

In Extremo must be the greatest of the folf/metal bands, each release exceeding the last. This single is no let down, closer to Verehrt Und Angespien than previous releases. It seems as if they are not yet satisfied with their "sound", and I look forward to an interesting evolution. Pity about the remixes, though...
