You'd think there wouldn't be much more to present by a songwriter who recorded three albums in his lifetime and has been dead since 1974. However, interest in Nick Drake's riveting music has grown enormously in the new millennium. Rarities were added to a number of posthumous collections, but with Family Tree his estate has brought forth an hour of music that predates his first album, Five Leaves Left. This set illuminates Drake's musical background, with his mother and sister appearing, and even Drake himself on clarinet for a Mozart trio. He covers traditional numbers as well as songs by Dylan, Blind Boy Fuller, and Jackson C. Frank. There are clear links to his own early compositions, including a couple early versions that appeared on his debut. Some of this has circulated on bootlegs over the years, but here assembled and sonically polished, it radiates with warmth. Recorded in casual circumstances, there are bits of chatter and laughter between songs, painting a picture of a happy, loving home scene. --David Greenberger

It's hard to listen to Nick Drake and not be reminded of those VW commercials where "Pink Moon" played while hipsters rode through the dark in their cabriolet. Nick Drake has the voice that you hear in your dreams at night. His new release, Family Tree, contains songs he recorded with his mother and family before having a record deal. Nick Drake masterfully fingers folk songs on his guitar and sometimes the piano. I have always admired his skill of making a few instruments sound like many, but what I found most impressive were the tracks where his mother and sister sang.

Music obviously ran in the Drake family, and it's difficult to listen to the CD without feeling that you are in the Drake living room yourself. Although I found Family Tree to be a fascinating look inside the Drake household, I would only recommend it for die hard Nick Drake fans, and would recommend newcomers to start with Bryter Layter or Pink Moon.

If this is going to be your first Nick Drake album I recomend you buy insted Pink Moon.

This is a recopilation of Drake's first recordings in his home and a friend house, the quality is no the best but I guaranty that you forget about that becuse of his powerfull and full of soul voice, there are some tracks of his mother singing that gives you an idea to where he got his musical liking and also a duet of him and his sister

The packages is a soft one with a large booklet with writings of his sister and friends, it's rather moving and it also has some pictures of the family.

So if you want to know more about Nick Drake I recomend this album becuse it has, even then when he was starting, a lot of fealing and something that good voices of today fail to have and that's heart.

I am not an old person talking, I have 24 and I recomend this to you hopping that Drake's magic remains live for a long time, this is ageless.

If you're seeking this out, I don't have to tell you what a special & rare talent Nick Drake is. Suffice it to say, this one is for die-hard fans. Those seeking proper introduction should proceed directly to Way To Blue or Pink Moon.

One of the most prized recordings in my collection has long been the Nick Drake bootleg, Tamworth-In-Arden 1967/68. I usually avoid buying boots, but couldn't resist the plethora of completely unheard/unreleased songs. Now, most of that material has been lovingly compiled (with a few surprises, as well as omissions) & cleaned up considerably in terms of the sound quality. Half of the songs are written by Drake & half are rather obscure covers, including 3 songs by the legendary Jackson C. Frank. Fans of Drake will hardly be disappointed.

Among the self-penned selections, the real highlights are the haunting "Leaving Me Behind" and "Come Into The Garden". "Rain" and "Bird Flew By" reveal a talent that is nearly fully formed. "Strange Meeting II" & "Been Smoking Too Long" were included on the Fruit Tree box set appendix, Time Of No Reply. Both are welcome here. (According to the liner notes that collection is soon to be re-released).

More than likely, fans will not be as thrilled with the two songs, written & sung by Nick's mother, Molly. But to be frank, I like them both even if they are a bit jarring amidst the rest of the set. Its nice to hear where Nick got some of his talent from.

Lovingly compiled & with copious liner notes (Nick's sister, Gabrielle's are quite moving) this is certainly worth the price of admission for longtime & new found fans of this brilliant and truely unique artist.

Family Tree ranks as singer/songwriter Tom Chapin's best overall children's release. Chapin applies a grand musical scheme, integrating horns, well-recorded large ensembles, and more, which results in a mix that will wow parents and kids alike. He prefers narrative-oriented songs, and here does a wonderful job on a father-son relationship in "Shovelling" and includes a touching lullaby-like farewell to friends on "Together Tomorrow." Unlike lots of children's music, in which a simple vibe is struck and then stuck with throughout, this collection varies with each song, often using humor to ease kids into a realm where they can grasp some kernel of truth about themselves and their parents. Family Tree.......2007-04-01

This CD is wonderful. We have seen Tom in concert and can't get enough of kid "rockin" with all of his music, but this one is a definate favorite. I have bought it for my youngest son, my grandchildren and am now ordering one for my friends' children. The kids put it on without prompting and turn it up so loud that we sing as loud as we can and no-one can tell how badly off key we are. The only thing better than Toms' music is a live concert.

Heads Up for Confused Grandparents!.......2006-10-30

When my daughter was young I found this terrific (then taped) music. It was a tremendous relief from the treacle and repetitious stuff that made me want to drive off the road. Even her older brother thought it was fun. Fast forward to today and my granddaughter is in line for her own copy of Family Tree. My son was both touched and delighted as he recalled long trips home in the dark with the funny and sweet songs that had his parents singing and made his sister stop whining. Give it as a gift, save it for yourself, but know that Chapin's kind and gentle view of the what children should know combined with his sense of humor is just what you'd like your precious grandchildren to hear about the world in which they will grow up.

All time favorite!.......2006-05-21

This is my all time favorite children's album - and having been a kindergarten / pre-school teacher for 20+ years, that is saying a lot! The title song is always a favorite, but every song on here is great! My class is doing two songs from this CD for our kindergarten graduation tomorrow ("Family Tree" and "Together Tomorrow") and the kids wanted to do several others. I had to draw the line somewhere! My own children (now ages 20, 11 and 9) still love this CD, too. This is really a winner! Strongly recommend!

We got it from the library and now I am buying it. It is catchy, fun and socially aware. Oh yeah, and the kids think it is great too. We sing it together and have so much fun. It's a great pick.

Great for kids from toddler to pre-teen!.......2004-09-20

Early on, we found Tom Chapin when we (adults) got tired of other kids' artists. Back then, our child was 2, and our friends kids were 6 and 10, and we all loved singing the songs, and even seeing Tom in concert. Great family fun!

Later, our girls continued to love Chapin's songs and concerts, and we make his concerts a family trip every summer, even with our (now) teen. These are songs kids can grow up with!

Our family favorites include Family Tree (this album), anything about Bruno (two other albums), and many more. Our elder daughter now loves some of his adult songs, especially A Study's About To Begin.

whoa! September rules!.......2007-06-10

the video for 'Satellites' just blew me away!! i'm telling you---watching her dance in that white dress was a mind blower! i was able to watch the video on you-tube because i never could get the one on the cd to work.

the CD has about 10 songs on it---all good. the cd also has two videos on it, 'Satellites' and 'Looking for Love'. for the life of me, i can't figure out how to view them. i've tried every multimedia player known to man and none of them will work. it's frustrating to the max---you'd think they would've put these two multimedia files in a format Windows Media Player could recognize.

oh well. other than not being able to play the videos, the CD is awesome.

One of Sweden's best new imports........2007-01-09

21 year old Petra Marklund has recorded what could be a very good contender for pop album of the year and dance album of the year of 2006. I discovered this artist by recommendation and I am tickled.

This album has the disctinctive Swedish pop sound which I looove. At the same time she has a disco sound going on. The well produced beats and instrumentation provide great foil to Petra's powerful vocals. It's refreshing for a female singer to have a strong voice in dance music.

"Satellites" the obvious hit off the album is dance-pop perfection. Think A* Teens meets old-school Britney Spears but with stronger vocals. It is the strongest and might be the best track on the album but each track is a winner. Some tracks are growers but giving them time their greatness will sink in.

"Looking for Love" has a blatant disco sound but it's much better than the crap that permeates our ears and brains. The general American public has really bad taste in music. In Europe, namely Scandinavia. They know good music and know how to make it. I am thankful to have discovered this artist.
"Flowers on the Grave" is an above standard pop ballad. It's much better than what we are subject to day in and day out by American pop culture.
Other standout tracks include, "It Doesn't Matter", "Good Times" and "Midnight Tonight" It's nothing groundbreaking or necessarily new but it's not good. It's great.

the other side..........2006-12-13

If Alice Deejay had an ounce of credibility this would have been her release. It sounds like 2001. It's dancey pop music. It's not electro in any way.

I will try to never listen to this cd again. The only reason I give it 2 stars is because the production value is above average.

I can see why young girls like this. I may give it to my niece.

My new FAVORITE cd!!! .......2006-08-11

From the moment you start the first track to the last you are hooked. The songs are infectious and the rythms have you wanting to dance. You can't help but to sing along and move to the beat. It was by chance that I came across hearing satellites and I was hooked in an instant. If you like fresh music with a twist of disco and dance-pop than you can't go wrong with this CD. You will not be dissapointed.

This CD has it all! Well produced, great lyrics, and fantastic voice!

Stellar dance pop.......2006-04-19

I had unknowingly already heard of September when I listened to Robbins' "Dance Party like it's 2006" compilation, which features "Satellites". I didn't know I would come to love the song at the time, but upon reflection, I can say that I enjoyed it even then.

This album is really hard to dislike. It doesn't have the obnoxious, repetetive, neverending beats like Cascada, or the whiny voice of Edmee' in DHT. The beats and melodies are all blended rather well, and the singer's voice is strong and very very easy to enjoy. At no point in this album does September take themselves too seriously, and that is HUGELY important in any genre, but definitely in dance.

"Satellites", the song everyone should know, is more electro than anything else, but I could see where people would get disco and house from. It's very poppy, and a wonderful song. "Flowers on the Grave" is one of the slower songs, still beautiful, still a great listen. "It Doesn't Matter" is more of a disco song, featuring some guitars thrown in with the "shake your ass like you just don't care" dance beats.

A previous reviewer said that "Midnight Heartache" sounded familiar. This is because the song features a "Bette Davis Eyes" sample as the musical background. Also, Mylo used the same sample for his "In Your Arms" song. September treats the music as a canvas, and they paint quite a song overtop of it. "Midnight Heartache" is one of my favorites. "Sacrifice" is your typical dance-pop fare, but again those vocals are amazing and they drag you by the ear drum.

All in all, I highly recommend this to anyone with an ear for gorgeous female vocals, or for a penchant to dance. This will not disappoint.

Album Description

2007 rarities collection from one of the most influential UK Folk artists of all time. Family Tree tells the story of Nick Drake's musical development in the years prior to his debut album Five Leaves Left in 1969. It features lo-fi recordings made on a reel-to-reel tape recorder at his home, Far Leys in Tanworth In Arden, as well as eight songs recorded on cassette during his sojourn in Aix En Provence. The inclusion of two songs by his mother Molly Drake bears testament to her influence on her son. His final performances on Family Tree, 'Day Is Done' and 'Way To Blue', recorded by his Cambridge friend and arranger Robert Kirby are the end of one story and the beginning of another. Family Tree comprises mostly other people's compositions: the Folk and Blues tunes used by many a young guitarist in the '60s, attempting to master the fretboard. Nick played Jackson C. Frank, Bert Jansch, Dave Van Ronk and, of course, Bob Dylan. Booklet printed on 'bible ' paper for initial pressings only! 28 tracks. Island.

Always loved him..........2004-01-27

I met Darrell Scott back in 1987 when he played clubs in the Northeast with several friends of mine. I loved his voice, his playing and his lyrics then, and I love them even more now. He's a master musician and songwriter. All of his albums are "must-haves" for anyone who appreciates truly gifted musicians.

There are a few nice tunes here, but the album fails to capture the energy of his live shows. While insight into the artist can be interesting , in this case some of these tales should have been kept between him & his therapist

Amazing songwriter and guitarist!!.......2002-09-10

I had the pleasure of seeing this guy perform at the New Song Festival in West Virginia. There was so much great music there, but Darrell Scott stood way above the rest. Three or four of my friends thought the same. This album is breathtaking in its storytelling, instrument diversity on certain songs, its top notch vocals by Darrell. His voice is sensitive but powerful. In concert, he brings tears to many and can touch the hearts of almost everyone. He is technically one of the best guitarists I have seen. He seems like a very humble, gentle human being. Many people have recorded his songs and if you listen to folk/country you've probably heard one of his songs. You have to check this out. If you like the CD, you'll be blown away by his live performances, too. Enjoy this great artist. You'll be sad if you don't.

Outstanding songwriting fom a great heart.......2001-11-03

The first time that I heard Darrell Scott was on the wonderful "Reel Time" CD with Tim O'Brien. Shortly after that project was released, I got to hear the two of them at a concert in Michigan. WOW!

As the title song implies, this is a project about "family" in all senses of the word. Darrell has such a great heart and so much soul and it all pours out in these songs. Even the cover art is a reference to a really funny (and heartbreaking) true story ("The Hummingbird.")

There's just a lot of truth here. Darrell's work has a profoundly spiritual quality beneath a wry and poignant sense of humor. He deserves so much more attention and acclaim. His voice is wonderful and his playing is just first rate.

His songs have been covered by many people (Brad Paisley, Patty Loveless, Travis Tritt) but for the most part, Darrell's original versions are usually still, by far, the best. His talents are in demand by all of my favorite musicians (like Jimmy Dale Gilmour and Steve Earle) and I can understand why. If you ever get the chance to see this cat play, either solo or with Tim O'Brien- GO!

In one word, I would describe Darrell as "authentic." He's the real deal. Truckloads of talent.

As of this moment, Amazon is offering a "twofer" deal with his other national release "Aloha from Nashville" which makes perfect sense. I definitely think of these two CD's together as a coherent "body of work." Throw in "Reel Time" and you've got a great Christmas for some lucky music fan!

WOW! What a great CD........2000-12-21

Every time that I hear Darrell Scott I am more impressed. I was even more impressed with his performance on Market Square (Aug 2000) in Knoxville, TN with Tim O'Brien. They played a great set, but the standouts were the Darrell Scott numbers (sorry Tim). He has one of the smoothest voices that I've ever heard. A standout in any genre.

This is truly a Yardbirds family album. Compiled from the Best of from The Jim McCarty band etc... you will not be disappointed with this release. Good solid down to earth music blues rock a fun sort a album. The really nice thing is that the album was helped put together by fans for fans.

The really IS a 'best of'.......2006-07-11

Most of the tracks on this album come from three different albums released on the Mooreland St Records label over the past few years. 'Outside Woman Blues' by The Jim McCarty Band, The British Invasion All-Stars (which has been getting some regular airplay on XM Radio) and the tribute album to blues man Sonny Boy Williamson 'Mostly Sonny' by The Ambulators with vocals by former Savoy Brown front man Dave Walker. Two tracks are brand new and feature Pete French (Cactus/Atomic Rooster) doing the vocal honors on 'Wang Dang Doodle' and 'Sitting On Top Of The World' ....there is also a long out of print track by The Yardbirds Experience (with Noel Redding, Jim McCarty, Eddie Phillips etc) that ends the collection nicely.
The cool thing is that there isnt a bad track on the entire disc.

Family Tree explores Björk's artistic progression in part by sifting through older material and experiments with musical tangents. Just a month removed from the release of her Greatest Hits collection, which was compiled entirely from fans' votes, this multi-disc set highlights the artist's selections. In addition, the box contains five 3-inch discs of rare and previously unreleased material. Two of them focus on her fascination with classical arrangements and include songs she performed live with the Brodsky Quartet in 2000. Two more are given over to her earliest work, including a few Sugarcubes tracks, as well as "Sídasta Eg," a song Björk composed on her flute when she was 15. The last of the five minidiscs, Beats, contains her first post-Sugarcubes club-oriented experiments with 808 State's Graham Massey and Mark Bell that eventually yielded her startling Debut. Excellent Collection -- Lacking A Bit In Literature.......2006-08-25

I found this at a local music store in New York for 35 bucks, so I would recommend going somewhere other than Amazon for it, but I would certainly recommend getting it.

There are a few songs I never would have heard if I didn't get it and many of the alternate versions are actually quite a bit better than the originals. A lot of the tracks are taken down a notch so her voice is really highlighted and several of the tracks really blow my mind. All of the stuff with the string quartet is incredible; the Icelandic version of "Birthday" (the Sugarcubes hit) is wonderful, and even the Greatest Hits According to Björk, which could perhaps seem a bit useless, is a very interesting addition to my growing half-knowledge of the lovely Icelandic lady.

The downside to all of this is that there is not so much beyond the music in this expensive and quite small box set. The design is quite cute and at first glance when I popped open the little pink box and found a bunch of mini-CDs running around I was very excited, but then I looked around and couldn't find very many words. I was hoping for some information about the selection of the songs, why some versions were chosen over others, etc. All I got was a paragraph by Björk in somewhat mysterious language explaining how Roots, Beats, Strings, and Words make up every human. She does give a tiny little description of each of the collections, but it's so general... I'd just like a little more.

To make it simple: If you are a huge fan of hers, and you probably are if you're even reading this, it's worth finding a copy of this. Sixty bucks? I'm not so sure, but you can certainly find it somewhere for a reasonable amount. It is certainly worth it for the music.

Beautiful, Impractical.......2006-08-15

The music is a must for all Bjork fans, but the small discs dont play on all players. My Mac laptop can't read them and I can't put them on my iPod. I guess this adds to their mystique in some way, they can only be experienced with my walkman on special occasions! Just a word to the wise.

Confessions Of A Foolish Man...........2005-06-28

I've been a fool and have suffered as a result of my ridiculous preconceptions. I'll start by saying that I went many years being aware of Bjork's existence, but being really oblivious to her music. I guess I just wasn't paying attention. I saw occasional pictures of her in magazines or on news reports (attacking a photographer or wearing a swan dress), and I wrote her off as some avant-garde fringe artist. But I never listened to her music!

Then about a year ago, my eyes and ears were opened! One of my best friends sent me a collection of songs on a disc, (thanks MI-2!), one of which was HUNTER by Bjork. Well, this song jumped out at me like a neon light in a pitch black room. Shortly after hearing that track, I heard a copy of the HOMOGENIC album and I quickly realized that I wasn't just listening to some edgey girl singer with a nice hook; I was experiencing true art. The more I listened, the more I loved the music. Now I'm kicking myself for all the years of listening that I've wasted.

I purchased FAMILY TREE as a sort of jump start to get up to speed with the rather large Bjork catalog of work. The songs span her career and give a wonderful overview to her work thus far. Some of my favorite tracks include PAGEN POETRY, BACHELORETTE, and VENUS AS A BOY. I also really love the alternate versions of five songs on the "Strings" mini disc, including a stunning version of the song that started it all for me, HUNTER.

At first, I found the price a little steep for an artist I wasn't all that familiar with, but I now consider it some of the best money I've spent on music in a long, long time. This is a great collection that any fan will enjoy. And if you're like I was, a little timid to explore the unknown, all I can say is don't delay any further, you don't know what a remarkable experience you're missing!

Original But..........2005-04-10

I feel like I have been cheated. I mean, sure I read these reviews before purchase and knew that the packaging was...odd and that the price was...not worth it. Oddly enough, the box is better than many people have said. Sure, the box is going to bend and the discs are going to look squished, but come on, if you saw this in the store, you should have realized that the six discs were not going to have much room. If you feel like you have been cheated because of the packaging, than you should have realized what you were buying, but if you feel cheated because of the price, I can relate. I can see how this box is this expensive (how much do you think all the artwork, papers, mini-disc containers, and pink n' white embossed box cost the company?) but it seems like they could've compiled it all in 2 or 3 CDs for a cheaper amount. Am I happy? Yes. Do I feel like this could've been done better? Yes and No. I think the box really adds character and I found no problem getting everything back in, but I do miss the cash I shelled out for this. And the mini-discs really were cool and hi-tech looking which added to the flair but I keep wondering about something...The second section (Beats) had only one disc, so instead of having a cardboard-like container for two, it was only in a plastic sleeve. So, my question is, why couldn't they have put each of the five mini's in seperate, single sleeves marked, "Roots Part One", then "Roots Part Two", etc. Then the box wouldn't be under so much weight. And if they combined the "Words" booklet and the map of "Family tree" in one slightly larger booklet, it could make up space too. So, yes the originality is neat but they could have made it with the same materials, just in smaller packages. I'm sure you're wondering if all this is really worth it but for me I think I'm quite happy on the whole. Plus, when I was reading past reviews of the box the suspense was killing me to see what it really looked like, so maybe this review will not only help you to decide to buy it but make you crazy with anxeity over what you will find when you tear away the shrink wrap...

A Must Have For All Bjork Fans.......2005-03-07

This is a great collection to start with if you are just getting into Bjork's music, or if you have everything else she has done. I had this collection in the middle of collecting her music, I would have bought the Family Tree anyway, because I love all of Bjork's music. I highly recommend this set to everyone because it has lots of great selections. From Icelandic to English she is great. Buy this collection and you'll be listening to Bjork for a while, you will not be disappointed.

Kati Szvorak and Teka take a folk tour of Hungary.......2002-12-24

This CD is a treasure trove of folk music from Hungary - NOT just children's songs. Great playing by Teka, vocals by Kati Szvorak. There are some vocals by non-adults, but are done well, not whiny or cutsey. Songs from practically every region of (greater)Hungary - Dunantul, Mezoseg, Moldva, Zobor - arranged in sections by "purpose" - wedding,Carnival, etc. For instance, in the dance section you get a great Dunantuli set. I originally purchased this because it has some Christmas songs on it. It also has a wonderful name-calling/taunting song - "S a te fejed akkora..." If you like Marta Sebestyen, Sebo, etc, you will like this CD. It's also a great introduction to Hungarian Folk music. Enjoy.
