Album Description

Based on the hit MTV animated series, Aeon Flux is one of the most anticipated films of the holiday season. The exciting and evocative score for the film was composed by Graeme Revell, a master at exploring the dark side of such film worlds as Sin City and The Crow.

Set 400 years in the future, disease has wiped out the majority of Earth's population except for one walled, protected city-state, Bregna, ruled by a congress of scientists. The story centers on Aeon Flux (Charlize Theron), the top operative in the underground "Monican" rebellion, led by the Handler (Frances McDormand). When Aeon is sent on a mission to kill a government leader, she uncovers a world of secrets.

I'm a super huge Aeon Flux fan; the cartoon, the movie, and now the album. The songs pay hommage to the electronia influenced TV series by Drew Neumann without sounding like rip-offs or forgotten tracks. If you haven't seen the film (or heaven forbid didn't like it) then preview the clips to get a sense of what this album has to offer. The strings mix well with the electronic gurlges only adding to the dramatic effect these compositions hold. Enjoy.

hey, i found the song you have been looking for it. the band is called Jem and the song is called 24. i hope this helped. im not really under 13 i just do this because i cant figure out how to write a review when i put im over 13 years old. so i figure this is the only way. i guess. if anyone can tell me how please let me know.

First of all, to the previous reviewer: I never heard an Evanescence song on the previews, but they did put Headstrong by Trapt on the DVD commercials. Second, I really did like this CD. Graeme Revell did a superb job on the instrumental songs, just like he did on the Daredevil soundtrack. My fav track is the last one, Aeon Flux. Loved the movie, loved the soundtrack.

Looking at the titles I'm assuming it's not on here, so I was wondering if anyone knew who did the song that was used in the commercials to promote the film? It sounds a little like Evanescence but I wasn't sure.

When I first listened to the soundtrack, several others came to mind. One was Graeme Revell's score for Daredevil. I'm happy to say that, while that one was terrifically boring, this one is very different. Much more rhythm, much more movement. But it's not just electronic noise, either. There are real instruments, and even melody at times.

This score also shared some similarities with Christophe Beck's score for Elektra. Both are orchestras fed through electronics. ("Beds of sound" has been used to describe both.) But Æon Flux is a better score, because there is more instruments and less percussion just for its own sake, which bored me after a while on the Elektra score.

Finally, this score really reminded me of a slightly softer version of the score for Batman Beyond, if anyone remembers that release.

On its own, I enjoy listening to this score, but I have to admit that I also liked the movie. Neither is perfect. But if you liked the movie, or are a fan of Graeme Revell's work, this may be worth a listen.

"Bleeding the False" is an ultra evil-sounding monster of an album. The musical arrangements form a wall of impenetrable sound which is more brutal than any form of torture, the vocals are bellowed, and the subject matter could have been written by Satan himself. But so friggin' what?! All of those characteristics are a dime a dozen in death metal nowadays. There is absolutely no innovation or originality of any kind on any of these songs (save the last track, a painful country music/acoustic remix of an earlier song). Granted, the music on here is quite impressive, and the rhythm section (which consists of crushing and precise riffs, very technical blast beats, and catchy, jackhammer rhythms) makes this album listenable. But the singer is just another knucklehead bellowing in a very Deicide-esque vocal style, and the lyrics are so terrible, they're laughable! Some bands (e.g. Marilyn Manson) creatively, subtly, and intelligently slip Satanic themes into the lyrics; but Aeon is not one of those bands. Vocalist/lyricist Tommy Dahlstrom couldn't be more one-dimensional or contrived, and somebody needs to explain the "beating a dead horse" analogy to him. "Morbid Desire to Burn" features the cliche line "together we are...six six six"...fast forward... "Forever Nailed" says there will never be a second-coming of Jesus...fast forward..."Doorknocker" contradicts that song, because it describes how the band want Him to come back (so they can re-kill Him)...fast forward..."Bow Your Head" is an honest-to-goodness love letter to the Devil (yeah, you heard me!)...fast forward one more time..."God Gives Head In Heaven" is a song about a self-explanatory topic. If you're death metal newcomer, you'll probably be blown away by "The Bleeding False." Everybody else, however, will probably think these guys just need to get a life.

Aeon have provided the death metal community with something that it needs dearly but rarely gets these days...great songwriting. Yeah this album is brutal, heavy, fast, satanic, angry, all the usual adjectives that get tacked to every death metal release until discerning fans can't tell what's good and what's bad. Well let me assure you, this is definitely a good album. What sets it apart from the rest is an emphasis on songwriting.

The majority of this album is played at breakneck speeds, with perfectly executed blasts and double bass providing the backbone. To my delight, however, the band has no problem slowing things down every once and a while to keep the songs interesting. Aeon don't fall into the trap that many brutal death metal bands fall into these days- the drums always fit the songs perfectly and accent the riffs, as good drumming should.

The guitars are heavy and creative, so that while the style of the album as a whole isn't extremely unique, the playing itself is never generic. The guitarists in this band are extremely talented, as evident through the various technical riffs and solos sprinkled throughout the cd. However, the guitarists never let their ego get in the way of writing good, brutal tunes. This brings me to the key aspect that makes this cd stand out for me...tasteful songwriting. This band shows a restraint that is rarely seen these days with the race to be the most brutal, fast, and technical DM band on the planet. The guitars and drums are always used as tools to create great songs, rather than the songs being used as vehicles to show off technical skill. Because of this, every song is actually DISTINGUISHABLE! It's such an exciting concept in modern DM.

The same restraint is not found in the vocals, which is both good and bad. It's good in the sense that these vocals are vicious, and the hatred of the lyrics can truly be sensed in every word. It's not quite as good when it comes to the question of lyrics. This band seems to be following the Deicide path of centering every single song on hatred of Christianity. This is such a tired subject in extreme metal. A song or two will suffice to show hatred of christianity, but beyond that writing every song about the same thing just seems to signify a lack of creativity.

But, lyrics are never a strong point in death metal, so it's really not a big complaint. My one other minor gripe about this album is the production: the guitar tone and kick drums are a bit flat sounding. This doesn't really make much of a noticeable effect except for during the slower sections, where a thicker tone would have helped for the overall heavy feel.

One of the stand out underground DM releases of the year!

5 out of 5 stars Dare I say flawless?.......2005-10-31

With the rise to international status of bands such as Behemoth, Belphegor, and, perhaps to a lesser degree, In Battle, we have begun to see blackened death metal played with a euro-twist of the most brutal order entering the underground mainstream, and leaving an indelible mark at that. Aeon features the same drummer of In Battle's "Welcome to the Battlefield", so it is not at all surprising that Bleeding the False abounds with relentless groove-oriented speed and technical musicianship. These Swedish satan-worshiping madmen have demonstrated that it is indeed possible to follow up an ep of such excellence as 2001's Dark Order. I must make mention of the recording job on Bleeding the False. If you've heard In Battle's aforementioned album you'll be familiar with the production, although improvements have been made. While WTTB featured an excellent clean yet heavy production, the guitars were thin at times and, for my tastes, overly produced. On Bleeding the False, however, the guitars have an organic crunch that messhes will with the 'dirtier' drum production, both large steps up from In Battle's album.

Dare I say flawless? I'm hesitant to say yes only because an album of this dimension (48 minutes) needs a bit more time than usual to digest. Nevertheless, I feel confident enough to say it is one of 2005's top albums, potentially number one.

Enjoy disquietingly satanic Death Metal, played with a delightful european accent and devilishly fast time signatures? I implore you; check out this album.

This is definitely the most brutal release of the year, if not ever. These guys don't let go until the album's over. If anything, I would describe them as a mix of Behemoth's vocal style and technicality and Deranged's crushing brutality. If you like intense death metal you need to get this.

    The small French label Aeon is one of the up-and-coming companies for contemporary music, and here they've released Kaija Saariaho's cello works in performance by Alexis Descharmes. The six pieces here are for either for solo cello (sometimes with electronics), for cello and bass clarinet, or for cello and flute. Nearly all Saariaho's cello works have been dedicated to Anssi Karttunen, once her classmate at the Sibelius Academy and now a mature master of contemporary cello repertoire. I tend to see Karttunen's recordings as definitive, and Descharmes either approaches this reference point or strays from it.

    "Petals" for cello and electronics (1988) takes its musical material from Saariaho's string quartet "Nymphea" written earlier in the same year. At this point in her career, Saariaho's focus was on timbre, and the piece consists of shifting soundscapes based on changes in bow pressure, dynamic, and playing sul tasto versus sul ponticello. There is little in the way of melody here, but the sonic range explored in the piece keeps attention throughout. The Karttunen recording was released in 1998 by the Petals label of the Finnish Music Information Center, Descharmes' performance is just as entertaining.

    "Oi Kuu" for bass clarinet and cello (1990) is one of Saariaho's least known pieces. It's scoring is peculiar, as both instruments have a similar range. Coming from the same era as the orchestral diptych "Du cristal ...a la fumee", the piece exhibits a similar ambience pierced by sharp tones. It's a nice piece, but the effect works better with orchestral resources. I've found no other recording of he piece and have nothing to compare Descharmes' performance with.

    "Pres" for cello and electronics (1992) is a solo work in four movements based mainly on the cello part in "Amers", a sort of concerto for cello, orchestra, and electronics which the composer wrote earlier that year. The material was derived entirely from the sound of a cello string pressed until its pure tone became noise, and the possibilities of the instrument are expanded by a special microphone developed at IRCAM that can capture each of the four strings in order to amplify or electronically alter their sound separately. Electronics are also used to bring in recordings of sloshing sounds of the ocean waves. While Saariaho's interest is still on timbre, there's a strong dramatic arc here, with the solo cello arising from nothingness on an E-flat-G trill, playing an ostinato with natural harmonics, and finally being surrounded by electronics. All in all the piece is an awesome sonic experience. Descharmes matches the Karttunen performance on Ondine, which is no mean feat, and the sounds of the electronics are better mixed here.

    In "Spins and Spells" for solo cello (1997) Saariaho seeks to restore a old-fashioned sound to the cello through using a Baroque scordatura. Her writing had softened somewhat around the middle of the 1990s, and here we see melodic motifs interspersed with expositions of colour and texture. It's one of the few pieces by Saariaho I don't care much for, and since I don't get it at all I can't compare Descharmes' performance here to that by Karttunen on the Petals disc.

    "Mirrors" for flute and cello (1997) first appeared as a game on Naive's Saariaho CD-ROM in 1999, where one could assemble its various parts in whatever order one pleases. In each of its sections, based on rhythm, pitch, timbre, or gesture, he flute always plays symmetrically to the cello in various ways. The flute part also has the performer speaking a text among the music (a technique later widely used in Saariaho's flute concerto "L'aile du songe"), which is taken from a 14th-century French roman. It's a cute piece, but fairly lightweight. Here Descharmes is joined by flautist Jeremie Fevre, and their competition comes not from Karttunen, but from Lesley Olson and Scott Roller on Kairos. Both are fine, but I slightly prefer this performance for its faster tempos (the piece lasts twenty seconds less here than on Kairos).

    "Sept papillons" for solo cello (2000) was the first piece Saariaho wrote after her opera "L'amour de loin", and makes something of a return to form after several years of writing overly melodic, ocassionally banal music. Again Saariaho explores possibilities of timbre, and the sounds produced by the cello are so otherworldly I could hardly believe that no electronics are involved. It's also emotionally moving; the second piece here is one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful things I've ever heard in Karttunen's performance on Ondine. Unfortunately, Descharmes really drops the ball here with a graceless, often reckless performance where the beauty of the piece is often still present but greatly diminished.

    The performances here were recorded at IRCAM, so one can expect sound of the highest quality. The liner notes are well done, containing background on the pieces written by Descharmes, biographies of the performers, and remarks by Saariaho about why the cello is so special for her. Saariaho fans should check out the disc, the music here is good and the performances are often exciting, but do get Karttunen's first.

    Emperor's members spawned many side projects. With the avant-grade glory of Peccatum, Ihsahn's solo project, and the industrial side of Mortiis, this band could never fail to impress the ears. Zyklon does the same, with Samoth and Trym from Emperor taking part in this extraordinary band, along with members of Myrkskog as well.

    Zyklon's music is mostly death metal, but the band also blends in the black metal roots, along with a side of industrial. It's really groundbreaking and will surprise you. Instruments are excellent here, vocal range is good, and atmospheric symphonics make this a worthy CD. If you love the extreme side of death metal, don't miss out on Zyklon, especially this CD.

    I loved world ov worms, it is still one of my favourite albums to this day. Aeon, well i can only see it as a big step back for Zyklon. they sacrificed speed to be the next morbid angel crossover band. behemoth did it much better, and actually progressed their sound, but zyklon, they actually sound like morbid angel, and thats not a good thing. some albums grow on me, but i've tried many times with Aeon, and it refuses to grow. i'll keep trying, and maybe then i'll understand how all you people think it's even remotely good. if you loved world ov worms, and havent heard aeon, dont be surprised if you find it incredibly boring.

    If anyone of intelligence read the review from Fred Durst's #1 Fan they have already figured out that this album is awesome.If you are into the Top 40 stuff he rambled on about in his suburban Ebonics you will not understand this stuff.It is brilliant art!Proof that extreme music still has a place to go.

    Anyway, this is a great CD- full of excellent vocals, extremely heavy riffs and crunchy bass - and it's better than the latest Dimmu Borgir.

    these guys are pissed as in Iron Monkey singer kinda pissed with riffs from the catalog of Isis and Neurosis and Pelican I have yet to be dissapointed with anything on Codebreaker label out of the U.K. maybe that is why Earache records distributes this label in the U.S.A. anyway you cant go wrong with this hour of way heavy menace

        Aeon Spoke features guitarrist Paul Masvidal and drummer Sean Reinert from Cynic, both being two of the most talented musicians worldwide today.Paul also played in Death's "Human" and Sean played with bassist Sean Malone in Gordian Knot and Aghora.

        That said,one could come to the conclusion that "Above the Buried Cry" is an extremely technical CD,with complex time signatures,double bass drumming,jazzy structures and awesome guitar solos.Wrong.

        Aeon Spoke has nothing to do with anything former members of Cynic did.It's ambient,introspective,emotional music.The only thing taken to extreme here is sensibility and feeling.

        I did not listen to the entire CD, but I downloaded a few songs from their web site. " Silence" and "Grace" are amazing songs!

        If you like Coldplay, Starsailor, Doves etc. should give them a chance. I am sure you won't regret it. You'll love it from the first chord on.

        Classical music often leaves me drowsy or distracted, but this is something different. Like tango partners, Paris and Argentina have long been sinuously intertwined, the Spanish artist being drawn into the arms of the French city, which seduces and renews him: one example being Julio Cortazar's book "Hopscotch," another being this CD. In this rich tradition, the young, ambitious, but little-known Quatuor Caliente, a quartet of five Parisians (a quartet of a bandeonist, pianist, violinist, and double-bassist augmented by a guest vibraphonist) has taken Piazzolla's masterpiece and spun it rapidly around, showing off its sparkling classical and jazz-infused ornament and leaving the listener ravished and fulfilled. The Quartet's playing is impeccable, sumptous, yet alert to Piazolla's subversive cleverness, and like after any good tango, both partners, the great Piazzolla and the radiant Quatour, are left much the better.
