Album Description

The English Prog-Rockers, Arena, are back with their sixth release, Pepper's Ghost. The title refers to an illusion created with the help of reflective surfaces, allowing one to project a ghostly apparition in a room. Themes of perception and flawed interpretation are prevalent in Arena's latest, as the rockers project a new image and reinvent themselves - this time as Victorian comic strip heroes!

This album features the artwork of David Wyatt who is well known for his illustrations in various children's books and Terry Pratchett novels. The album's theme is a riveting one that promises longevity, leaving room to be elaborated upon further in the future. Pepper's Ghost will appeal to fans of Marillion, Genesis, and Neo-Progressive music in general.

4 out of 5 stars wheres swoden?.......2007-03-23

arena is a powerful band and in its previous work the vocals made the story true. here vocals are on ony a couple of tracks and the album gets lost somewhere. im still a fan but i think this could have been better.

4 out of 5 stars a solid reflection of a great pocket of modern music.......2006-04-07

I recall that soon after purchasing Peppers Ghost I became a devoted enthusiast / collector of InsideOut music releases. While I am far from a label-snob, this is a focused identity that has excellent ideas on quality and output of interesting intellectual music right now.

Arena's Pepper's Ghost, in my opinion represents everything that is going RIGHT with this genre's wonderful and prolific collection of present work. There is an instant theme on Pepper's Ghost and the music is not too hard to digest on first spins. With repeated listens the album expands and reveals even more. I have played this one heavily and I still hear new elements. Pepper's Ghost is very good.

Lastly, Arena has hit another great nerve with record buffs by making the packaging a focal point again. The artwork on Pepper's Ghost is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars A very nice Prog Rock album.......2006-03-04

This is sort of like Asia with a harder edge and a slightly more progressive leaning. John Mitchell is a really good guitarist and a very effective singer. His singing isn't of the quality of a Peter Gabriel or Jon Anderson. It is more in the vein of Dave Gilmore or Eric Clapton, which is very good. The rest of the group are also really good and are cohesive and the playing is inspired.

I really have enjoyed this album more than some of the other recent progressive outfits. Easily on a par with Neal Morse era Spocks Beard, Dream Theatre or Transatlantic.

4 out of 5 stars arena en evolución.......2005-08-25

4 out of 5 stars Good Theater.......2005-04-17

Arena delievers once again, showing themselves to be true masters of heavy prog. Kudos must be given to a band that has so many influences, such as early Genesis to dare I say heavier groups like Deep Purple, and yet manage to sound very much their own. I love the way the cd comes on as some macabe music hall with seven stories. Especially impressive is the last song Opera Fanatica, which combines elements of Opera, Prog and Metal to create an opus any band would be proud of. Hats off to Clive Nolan, keyboard player, who is the guiding force behind Arena for coming up with this concept. There is even a great comic book style insert to help explain the songs! Docked one star for beig a bit too short, inotherwords, for Arena, more is better!

2 out of 5 stars Musical Theater Rock.......2005-08-15

Yes this stuff is catchy and cute, but most of these songs sound like commercial-like jingles to me. I can hear the Beatles influence, but listen to nickel creek's "spit on a stranger" or any weezer song and you'll hear a much more interesting beatles influence. This is like musical theater rock. In other words Pepper's Ghost seems like a bunch of musical theater guys who picked up guitars and put on some ripped jeans. I saw these guys play live at grape street philadelphia, and they were very bubbly and full of energy which was nice to see, but they were clearly very full of themselves. It seemed they were more interested in how they looked in their cool rocker clothes than the actual performance. However I do wish these guys the best (and they will clearly be successful because they are playing to the 14 year old girls), but they are hardly artists. They have really amazing voices, they should just leave the songwriting up to Sondheim and Jason Robert Brown

5 out of 5 stars Little Pretty.......2005-06-04

I got the chance to see Pepper's Ghost as an opening act and I was instantly blown away. They have a wonderful stage prescence (I strongly recommend that all fans attempt to see them live) and really work up the audience. On top of that, their sound is wonderful. With catchy lyrics and a strong lead vocal, Pepper's Ghost is easily much more pleasant to listen to then other all male bands out there.

"The Hand the Shook the World" is easily a CD that can be listened to over and over again all the way through, no matter what sort of mood you are in. The songs are all easy going with tinge of rock and roll in them, as well as humor and substance. Some of the top songs on the CD are "Little Pretty", "Hang on my Shoulder" and "Rock and Roll Stars."

I strongly recommend the Pepper's Ghost CD to anyone who might be interested. You will not regret this purchase. I look forward to future CDs from this wonderful band.

5 out of 5 stars Great band with beatles sound.......2005-05-10

5 out of 5 stars Simply Fresh..........2005-04-21

Whereas as legendary bands such as ACDC,Aerosmith,Zeppelin, etc have become the primary influences of today's rock revival, surprisingly Pepper's Ghost may have had these bands at the bottom of their CD piles growing up.The graceful harmonies and non-cheesy arrangments on the ballads are what make this fantastic band such a diamond in the rough.Upon first listen to this album,I could definitely hear the influence of The Beatles, early Stones,Bowie,Todd Rundgren,MC5,Stooges,The NY Dolls,The Ramones, and just a little hint of Zeppelin here and there especially in the lead off single "You're In My Heart".The slow burn chord crunch on "Everything and Anything",fast paced rockers like "Hang On...",and "Word On The Street" prove this band to be a heavy rock and roll force to be reckoned with.Of course there's a little pop suss of early Stones and Beatles thrown in on two of the greatest sing along rock songs in years on "You're In My Heart" and "All I Know".And with equally satisfying ballads such as "Heavy Body Bags","Losin' A Friend",and the best closing track on a rock and roll album in recent years,Pepper's Ghost have shown us that this is only the beginning.

Cheers to one hell of a fresh rock and roll album!

*(on the band's website,Andy Johns, producer of the album, says that he has only worked with 2 other bands as great as PG in the past.with a track record like his that includes Zeppelin 4 and Exile On Main Street,I think it's pretty clear who he was talking about.)

5 out of 5 stars PeppersGhost is the best!!.......2005-04-10

i have seen many shows by PeppersGhost in the past year, in Philly mostly at the Grape Street Pub and in numerous places in Bucks County PA. They are a great bunch of guys and are tons of fun to hang out with!!! THey have the ability and talent to go far in their musical career and this cd is just the beginning for their stardom!!! Good Luck Guys!!! <3 Chrissy
