Album Description
Misplaced Childhood is seen by many as the definitive Marillion album, and it is hard to argue. The music is stylistically typical of their first three albums and has far fewer flat spots than Fugazi. It also contains that most unproglike of beasts, a hit single. The infectious "Kayleigh" reached number 2 on the British charts. EMI. 2005.

A CD With Multiple Meanings.......2007-04-25
MISPLACED CHILDHOOD, Marillion's third album, is a CD with a number of different themes. It's ostensibly about lead singer Fish's youth and his inability to deal with a series of bad relationships and their aftermath, but it could just as well be anyone looking back on past mistakes and realizing what's necessary to correct them. For me, this CD reminds me of how unmotivated I was before developing a crush on actress Sarah Michelle Gellar in 2002, and what might have happened to me had this not occurred. When I've heard songs from it, I realized that had I not gotten this particular crush, I might have fallen back into old eating habits and weigh over 300 pounds today, as well as trying a lot of other things that were, simply put, dangerous and/or unhealthy. This CD, unlike the first two, which were all over the map, not only has a consistent theme, but one which inspired me to have pictures of pretty actresses as a deterrent to overindulgence. In other words, this CD is, overall, progressive rock with a cautionary message.
Marllion's Epiphany.......2007-02-11
This is the groups finest effort. It is laid out in a way that flows and leaves you wanting more. The music is as good as anything Pink Floyd, Genisis or Yes ever did. However this is a one of effort. Nothing before or after can even be in the same class. I have been listening to this disc for more than 20 years and it still find it amazing.
OK, but I don't get the hype........2007-02-04
I got into Marillion around 1999 and was getting big into progressive rock at that time. I got the first 2 ("Script for a Jester's Tear" and "Fugazi") before this one and loved them. With this one, I was just a little underwhelmed. It's not bad, but it's mostly not brilliant either (whereas almost all of the first Fish and about 1/2 of Fugazi still blow me away) - most of it, although it may have the wandering-connected song structures and odd meters of progressive rock, just kind of sounds like run of the mill 80's pop to me. Overall it's relatively pleasant, with some pretty moments (Steve Rothery has some nice guitar playing here, as elsewhere), but doesn't have the bite of the early Fish albums or the subtle, underlying feeling that marks the best of their later (Steve Hogarth-fronted) albums. I know a lot of people love this CD, and I enjoy it, but I would recommend "Script for a Jester's Tear" or "Anaraknophobia" (which has a late 1990's "alternative" sound, but is still a fantastic piece of musical art) for someone interested in this band at their best.
Emotional musical journey.......2007-01-28
I remember when this album was released. I was just finishing high school. I remember hearing "Kayleigh" and thinking "Huh, theres something here". I bought the cassette and was a Marillion(and FISH fan) from that point on.
It wasn't until CD's came out that this was the first CD that I bought. I bought myself a personal player slapped it in and was overwhelmed by the journey. This is a definite headphones album. The story-cycle follows a pattern and the vocals(by THE MAN Fish) and the music that accompanies this is awe-inspiring.
I turned more people on to this album in college than I can probably remember. It's just that good. For me it reminds me of "me younger days" whenever I listen to it. I guess this is because it was in such heavy rotation for years after I first heard it.
I recommend the remastered double disc, because of the sound quality and the story about how this concept by Fish and Marillion came about. Fascinating and funny story.
All in all, this album would please anyone who sat down, put on the headphones, and just let the journey begin.
A classic .......2007-01-09
One of the best productions from Marillion, back in their golden age.

Album Description
Produced by Ron Aniello (Barenaked Ladies, Lifehouse, Guster), "Misplaced" is the very first all English album from Moshav. Featuring 13 songs, including the first single "The Only One" remixed by Brendan O'Brien (Rage Against The Machine, Korn, Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam).
The band's 8th album, "Misplaced," is filled with everything, from in your face alternative rock, to beautiful ballads. It includes a cover version of Tom Wait's classic, "Jockey Full Of Bourbon." One of the ballads, "Streets Of Jerusalem," was co-written by Larry John McNally (The Eagles, Bonnie Raitt, Joe Cocker).
Imagine the jamming of Phish, the energy of Pearl Jam and the spiritual lyrics of U2, and you can begin to describe the unique sound of Moshav!

Inspiring and exciting.......2007-07-18
I heard this group perform live at the California World Music Festival and had to have their music. This CD is one that has captivated me for several days now. A great mix of rock, traditional and alternative sounds. I love it!
Did you see them on TV?.......2006-09-26
Moshav was on the Chabad telethon earlier this month. They put them on 3x... I am guessing that they kept getting calls from fans wanting (and donating for) more.
I agree with the other reviewer... that if you listen to the first track...or if you ever see them perform live...you will be a fan.
Amazing Breakthrough CD.......2006-09-07
I saw these guys perform live , by accident, almost a year ago (I really wanted to see the other group, soul farm). I immediately fell in love with the group and purchased all of their old CDs. This one, is by far, their best. I purchased it last week and haven't been able to stop listening since then. I think it will be their breakout. They really do sound like a cross between Pearl Jam , Bob Dylan and U2. Enjoy.
AMAZING - like no other band ever before.......2006-08-26
Truly a unique sound, you'll get hooked the second you hear the first song. It's incredible! I recommend this to everyone looking for good, pure original music.

Classic Marillion.......2007-03-13
If you are only going to own one Marillion album it should be this one. Yes, their "progressive rock" sound is a bit dated. And it's a bit over dramatic at times. But this album is still worth owning. If you are considering trying this band, this is the album to buy.
Masterpiece.......2005-06-21
Its hard to find an album with only good reviews.
You are going to have a hard time finding someone who has heard this record a couple of times and feel unchanged.
There is no childhoods end.
Enjoy.
Will blow your ears away.......2005-05-25
I got this album in Egypt, in the late 1980s, from a friend there who was up on European bands. From there, I took the cassette on all my travels; it is one of those rare albums you want to listen to-in entirety-dozens of times in a row.
Marillion's songs (on this album; I've not heard their others) have the haunting quality of some Alan Parsons, and the first album by Pearl Jam. Because there are no strong breaks between songs, this seems to be a "theme" album, in the vein of "The Wall" or "Sgt. Pepper"...here the theme is stream-of-consciousness reminiscences. Listening while reading the lyrics bears this out, such as when the last lines of "Lost Weekend" segue into the subject of "Blue Angel".
If nothing musical has "electrified" you in awhile, get this album! It won't be cheap, because its an import, but it will be worth it. I just got a CD, because my cassette was worn clear out; and the music is as beautiful as ever.
One of the best albums ever!.......1999-06-25
The power of the lyrics and the voice of Fish got me hooked from the begining. I still remember this album when it just came out to the market. It doesn't matter what kind of music you like- JUST GO BUY IT NOW!(if you can still get it...) It's a celebration of music. One of the best albums of all times. Enjoy!
One of the best albums ever!.......1998-11-13
I'm glad there are other people who know what I know. Sadly, few Americans know of the band.
This album is best listened to in one sitting.
It's the musical equivalent of Catcher in the Rye. I give no higher compliment.

Amazing.......2004-03-17
Every single song on this album is amazing. Rupert Hine has a perfect voice for this material, the production is early-80s perfection and the lyrics are disturbing and bleak. A must-own for people that have some taste.
Time warp - we're back in 1981.......2003-03-03
Everything about this album has 1981 written all over it. Synth pop at its extreme, yet that's what was 'in' back then. Listening to it now takes some strength, but it's a classic all the same. 'Misplaced Love' is the best on this album, and is hard to find on CD - so worth getting for that song alone.
Immunity - An amazing trip.......2001-08-06
This was the first of a Trilogy of solo recordings by Hine on A&M in the early 80's. It is also the best. This is a newly remastered recording that sounds fantastic. Two things stand out on this one: Hine's lyricist is Jeannette Obstoj, who spins tales and visions that are sureal, full of tension, and enjoyably wierd. Hine vocals fit the songs perfectly. The soundscape Hine creates is a perfect match, layered with creatives noises and effects that provide an intense and sometimes scary experience. The record has not dated in the 20 years since release. Get this one!

80's High Tech with Rock Emotion.......2002-11-02
Although all of Mr Hines work is high quality, Waving Not Drowning (for me) is the highlight of the 3 A&M projects. The song "Curious Kind" is simply a masterpiece!
The remastering is of the quality you have come to expect from one of Rock's greatest producers, song writers, and performers.
GET IT!
Solid second entry in A&M Trilogy.......2001-08-06
This was the 2nd recording in Hine's early 80's A&M Trilogy. As fine as it is, his first, Immunity, is the better work. This one lacks some of the intensity, and downright scariness that marked some of the previous work. Still, there are some standout tracks such as "The Set-Up" with clever lyrics and a great melody. "Eleven Faces" explodes with a vast sound. "Dark Windows" is set to the sound of a Thunderstorm, and is suitably brooding and haunting. Get this one after Immunity, but well worth having if you like Immunuty.

One of the best prog album of all time.......2007-07-06
For sure, this cd is a must have in any serious prog music lover.
It has pass the test if time, even so, it's getting better with age.
The music is very intense and emotionnal. For me, this one is among the top 10 cd of prog music. A real gem !
Overlooked gem, overlooked band.......2005-11-11
Much earlier in their career Marillion took a giant step forward with the release of "Childhood's End". Previous efforts were very good (especially 83s "A Script...") but the melodies Fish and the boys ponied up for "..Childhood" were simply fantastic. The cuts move seemlessly together and lyrical content rose to new heights. Mark Kelly's lush keys paint a beautiful background for Steve Rotherty's simple yet effective guitar lines to layer over. Most folks will remember the simple love song "Kayleigh" which received a small amount of airpley in the US but deserved a much better fate. The rest of the album is a textbook of how to effectively use emotion and dynamics to reach a desired effect sonically. I could write 1000 words about how good this effort is, but it still wouldn't do it proper justice. It's just something you'll have to find out for yourself.
Great Neo Prog Concept Album.......2005-10-19
Ju Ju is in denial. This is a great album that features some great songs such as the powerful "Hearts of Lothian" , "Lavender" and many others. What an awesome progressive statement in a time when prog was not very fashionable. Once again JU JU es poo poo.
Great after all these years!!.......2005-09-10
I was introduced to Marillion in the mid 80's, Misplaced Childhood being the initial album I heard. I was in the Air Force and on a trip in England when I met a girl named Shuna who blew my mind with this ecletic sound. I had never heard anything like it, being bombarded with the Bon Jovi's and Twisted Sister's of the day. I still listen to this album TO THIS VERY DAY! I have never stopped loving the finely orchestrated melodies and harder riffs. It takes me back to England every time I listen to it and a very special time in my life. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a solid album of beautiful sound....
ALL THAT & MORE.......2002-01-28
I can only say I waited too long to find this double CD! Not only do you get the great album Misplaced Childhood you get the B-sides to the singles, something Marillion has been known for, but you get demo recordings and alternate mixes. As far as the B-sides go I would suggest buying B'sides Themselves, which is an excellent recording of the flip sides to their singles through the years.
Once I like something it is usually difficult for me to accept changes, but Marillion proved me wrong. It's hard to believe the work they put into these demo versions. I can understand the B sides, but these demos contain a lot of work; they kick! I'd comment on the music on these discs, but Marillion has never put out a second rate product and they didn't start here. This is beyond music it is ART! Misplaced Childhood shows a wide expanse of emotions experienced during the long tour for the previous album Fugazi.
The best songs to me are both B-sides "Lady Nina" and "Freaks". The quality recordings don't stop there; there are 3 great versions of "Kayleigh", 2 of "Lavender", plus "Lavender Blue" and 3 of "Heart of Lothian". Please don't think there isn't anything else worth listening to, though! There are 27 songs here and you should enjoy them all. I would say this is a once in a lifetime for a group, but they've done it with Script for a Jester's Tear and B'sides Themselves. I really don't think you could go wrong buying any of the releases with Fish as the vocalist.
To say this is highly recommended isn't enough. This is one of the best recordings ever put onto laser. The 24 bit digital remastering makes this so much the better. Get a cool one, or, two, sit back and enjoy this. It's a great ride!

80's synth-rock for......the thinking man. (And woman. And child.).......2007-06-27
It started for me in the latter years of the 70's when I and a few select friends of mine were discovering the treasure troves of virtually unheard-of music that was European progressive music (unheard-of in the sheltered confines of the central United States, anyway). Having heard the name of Rupert Hine as producer--and liking his work--it was doubly-intriguing to see his name come up as the frontman & vocalist/keyboardist of a little band called QUANTUM JUMP, of whom some of you truly fortunate ones might be familiar. If for whatever reason you who are reading this choose to read no further and opt to check out QJ, by all means, do so now. Their uniqueness, precision as musicans, and their love of the weird and the absurd and the humorous in music set them far, far apart from their league of contemporaries. The JEM import records catalog, in a semi-successful attempt to describe them, said something to the effect of, "Imagine a cross between Frank Zappa and Steely Dan." Not TOO far off the mark, yet falling painfully short of describing how utterly wonderful their music was. So: go check them out, faithful readers, and then come back here.
Fast-forward to 1986, the heyday of the MTV era, and the debut of Thinkman's first album/cassette, THE FORMULA...and its winning, very catchy and even very danceable hit, "Best Adventures." Loved the video, loved the song, ran out and bought the cassette, loved it to death, played it to death...
...and here I am, 21 years later, rediscovering Thinkman and preparing to order it on CD. It COULD be a fair speculation that this could be what Quantum Jump might have sounded like, had they stayed together for more than 2 fantastic albums (QUANTUM JUMP and BARRACUDA), & yet Thinkman does indeed claim a place of its own. Rupert shares vocals with at least one other member of the band (I wish I could say who, but there were very few liner notes with the cassette), and continues his songwriting partnership from his QJ days with Jeannette Obstoj. The music is energetic as all get-out, the vocals varying between manic, calmly enthusiastic and pensive, and a good share of the 8 songs have to do with urging the whole of humanity to THINK, MAN! :o) One thing I love about some of these tracks (and, incidentally, there's not a dud on the entire release, IMHO) is their praise of all of us as a race of beings capable of rising to the levels only attained (so far) by the likes of Einstein, particularly "Legend," "The Ecstasy of Free Thought," and the indescribably inspiring closing track, "There Shines Our Promised Land." Those titles alone should serve to inspire, wouldn't you say?
As with Quantum Jump, it's regrettable that this fine amalgam of musicians had a short life span, but what they gave us in this release is a collection of tracks that not only is a showcase of what was truly good about the music of the 80's, but also a glowing, loving offering to all music lovers that, I believe, was intended to gently remind us of what we are capable of achieving in our lifetimes, if only we would. Look deeply into, enjoy, and even DANCE to the great, great music of Thinkman.

Customer Reviews:
Their two best albums together..........2006-11-14
Sad Cafe's recording career included several albums, but they finished it as more or less unknowns to the masses. It's a shame because Misplaced Ideals and Facades, the two albums I'm thoroughly familiar with, are full of well written, well produced, and wonderfully catchy pop rock, as perfect for their time as anything that made it to the radio. Unlike some of their counterparts' music, their songs have the additional element of lyrical depth (sometimes disguised as nonsense - 10cc comes to mind). If you're fortunate enough to find this two-fer CD, enjoy a solid document of intelligent late seventies pop, a rare find on more than one level.
Should have been a 2 albums on 1 cd.......2005-10-18
Both albums, Facades and Misplaced Ideals could have fit on 1 cd.
Shame because MI is one of the best recordings around. Can easily compare to the best Boz Scaggs and the bands dev1 mentioned ever put out.
Facades is lacklustre by comparison.
It gets a 10 for MI, but a 4 for Facades, thus a 3
By the way, why does Amazon include a 'NO' in 'was this review helpful to you?'. People are only human and don't like opinions that differ from themselves. With some who are less mature, this the 'NO' makes it too easy express such displeasure.
Are they trying to discourage negative reviews, hence not purchase the CD. Such reviews only help a person in not being dissatisfied a product that received positive reviews
Not Your Average White Bread.......2000-07-01
Groups such as Foreigner, Journey and Boston dominated the charts during the end of the nineteen-seventies. There was hardly any room left for these melodic and lush rockers from Manchester, England - Sad Cafe. But, unlike the formula sound of the previous mentioned bands, Sad Cafe's material is more immediate, relies on the blues, and has a heavy edge - intensely heavy. The band also features a knock-out horn section. This 2fer includes the band's most acclaimed work with A&M: Misplaced Ideas from 1978, and Facades from 1979. Lead singer Paul Young has a tough street-thug voice and does a dead-on Mick Jagger (not that it's a sin).
Misplaced Ideals is the harder sounding, more energetic and blue of the two CDs. It has everything possible going for it: thundering guitar lines (Restless), a killer horn section (Here Come The Clowns), luscious vocal harmonies (Run Home Girl), and a demented Keith Moon drummer (Tony Cresswell). He decimates `Black Rose' and `On With The Show.' The arrangements are intense and dramatic. `I Believe Love Will Survive' opens with a tender melodic piano, sweet harmony vocals, then builds to a grand crescendo of pounding drums and screaming lead guitar. The finale (On With The Show) has a repeated scorching guitar reprise that'll peel wallpaper. Compared to Misplaced Ideas; Foreigner, Journey and Boston are about as fierce as the Carpenters.
Facades isn't on par with Misplaced Ideals - the sound is softer, and the blues are replaced by white bread funk (Guys, what were you thinking?). Still, Facades is a reliable CD with infectious melodies (Angel), soaring vocal harmonies (Everyday), and hooks with hooks (check the break after the lonesome synthesizer introduction on `Nothing To Lose'). Facades has a couple of Average White Bread (I mean Band) throwaways (Strange Little Girl & Get Me Outta' Here). So much for perfection. Get this rocking Sad Cafe 2fer before it's relegated to "sensational out-of-print CD" heaven.
Glad to hear SAD..........2000-02-12
I bought this on a whim, on vinyl ("Misplaced"), seemed a good year for music,1978. I instantly fell for it. An odd mix of soul and Prog/pop elements.10cc comes to mind at times. Eric Stuart, in fact, produced the Facades album. Superb playing and warm arrangements make this a delight. All that's good about '70s music resides here. Fans of Mike And the Mechanics will notice Paul Young's residence here. The fact that both LPs are together is an added plus. GREAT!
Manchester's Sad Cafe' back in the limelight.......1999-03-07
They never really hit the big time, even in England. Everyday Hurts was a minor hit from the lads from Manchester, but even that was fleeting. Nice to see this re-issue of several of their better tracks. The album is actually a compilation of Fanx Ta-ra, Misplaced Ideals and Facades. The lyrics feel a little stilted these days ("looked out of the window what did I see? I saw the devil he was looking at me....") but it does take fans back to those heady days of the Manchester Apollo with its memorable power outages. Shame they didn't include live tracks in this set but we can always hope for the re-issue of the live album. Colin Bodell
