High Cost, Little Quality.......2007-06-07
This CD is such a disappointment! I sing with a traveling theater group and thought I could practice to this karaoke disc. Not a chance! The quality is poor-synthesized instruments & wrong notes and chords all over the place!Don't even get me started on the sample vocal tracks! I actually discarded this part of the pack as it was painfule to listen to. The vocals are horribly off key. Please, save your money. I know it's exciting to find this wonderful musical in a karaoke version but keep looking. Don't waste your cash on this one!!!
i'm 13, and i need help. (by the way, GO WICKED! luv it.).......2007-05-29
Hey ya'll.
i'm giving this 5 stars because i love wicked a lot (and it's not my top 1, but top 3.so i'm not biased) but i really need to know if the karaoke part is worth buying. i don't care about the instructional singers, just the music. i want to perform this, but plz tell me if it's worth the MUCHO money? thnx!
Don't waste your money.......2007-02-01
My daughter needed the karaoke version to perform one of the songs for a show at her school. This version is absolutely horrible. Neither one of us can even stand (or sit)to listen to this cd. What a terrible waste of good hard earned money. Everyone who has purchased this should receive their money back plus 10% and an apology for being subjected to hearing this. Shame on the people who produced this cd and are making money from it.
"well-sung, theatrical vocals..." What cast did they listen to!?.......2007-01-07
I bought this CD from the local Wal-Mart for a hefty sum. I was a little nervous, as I always am when I purchase something without listening to it first, but figured what the hey, it's Wicked, it CAN'T be bad. I really just wanted an alternate take on some of my favorite songs, since I can't afford to go see the musical in person yet.
I was wrong. I was very, very wrong. I realized I wasn't going to be getting the same level of performance as in the OCR release. But, after reading the reviews when I got home, I opened it. I popped it into my CD player, and my ears were immediately assaulted by their Gahlinda's warbling. Yes, Gah-linda. No other name fits so well. It's plain the group assembled to sing was trying, in part, to emulate the original cast's performance, and sadly, they failed miserably. Gah-linda's voice was off pitch and screetchy, frequently. Thinking perhaps I was merely comparing her unfairly to other performers, I played it for a friend, who all but begged me to turn it off. It was plain to us both that she was trying to sing far above her natural range. The other cast members, save their Fiyero, were decent. Their Elphaba was amateur good, and their Nessarose was surprisingly talented for the few moments time she got.
On to the music itself.
I have a reasonably high quality speaker system, yet the background music sounded like a midi file someone had made of the real music. Like something out of an old 16 bit game, or perhaps a talented teen trying to coax music out of an old keyboard. Thinking perhaps it WAS the sound system, I tried it in another media player. Same sound. Realizing that perhaps the guide CD might have simplified music apart from the karaoke CD itself, I swiftly switched to CD2. But wait. There was no CD2, because I had recieved two copies of CD1.
This was the final insult, for me. I contacted Stage-Stars and asked for my money back, explaining the variety of reasons I thought I deserved it. The woman I spoke with was polite and understanding, and, after getting my address, overnighted me a new copy of the title, shrink wrapped. It went immediately back to the store, and I got my money back.
On another note, on hearing the samples given on various sites of the CD2 music, I must conclude that it is the same quality on both CDs. In all honesty, you'd have more fun just setting the money on fire. Don't waste it on this purchase.
I could play it better myself on a kazoo.......2006-12-13
I bought this karaoke cd because I was told it was the only one available for the musical and even though I had heard it was bad I figured it couldn't be all THAT bad. I was wrong. It's so bad that it hurts the ears of anyone with an ear for music and can throw off even the best trained singer - even when watching the cd+g graphics. I don't know what solution to offer instead since it's the only karaoke track that I know of... but you may be better off just going without.

good stuff.......2006-04-21
when i first heard about this album, i thought it might be somewhat interesting. sonic youth forsaking raw power for electronic beats. the more i thought about it and listened to their other albums, the more intriguing it became. finally i bought it, because the store was out of sy's debut album. it was a trip, to say the least. it started out with an all percussion track. is it electronic, acoustic, or a combination of both? i never really considered it while listening to it. the next track was silence. kind of gives you an opportunity to think about the onslaught of the first track, which until then seemed like... something. whatever it is, it just seems more clear. then kim gordon fades in, ranting about whatever it is that she rants about. sexism, violence, love, something along and eclipsing those lines. macbeth is just crazy. hi! everybody lies somewhere between frank zappa and disco. two cool rock chicks is conversation and then a j mascis guitar solo. is there really anything more one needs than that? mike watt does a deep-voiced, laid-back version of madonna's "burnin' up" and is enough to make anyone question how evil pop music really is. thurston moore does something similar with "into the groovey", using samples from the original version. kim gordon, too, shows her pop side on her karaoke version of "addicted to love". steve shelley finally proves the existence of his vocal cords on his reading of lee ranaldo's "me & jill". "making the nature scene" was taken further than anyone ever could have imagined after the forceful version on the "confusion is sex" album. this doesn't really explain the album, but that's why people listen to music rather than just read reviews.
A Grand & Noble Experiment.......2006-03-28
This is recording that is well grounded in eighties pop culture, yet still sounds avant-garde. The Album is full of Sonic Youth's trademark feedback-drenched explosions of noise and beat-inspired poetry, yet this is unlike any other SY recording. Not only do most of the songs involve a beatbox and samples, there are even Madonna and Robert Palmer covers!
Humor and irreverence combines with an anything-goes approach the song structures. It sounds like the band is having a lot of fun, and that energy passes to the listener. An added bonus is the guest appearances of Mike Watt and J. Mascis.
Released around the time of Sister, this album is a glorious companion-piece to that other SY classic. If you don't own this yet, you should!

Album Description
This is a new recording of selections from the Tony Award winning musical La Cage aux Folles. The show won nine Tony Awards in 1984, including Best Musical and Best Score. This album features two versions of each song: tracks 1-10 contain the background music and guide vocals, tracks 11-20 contain the accompaniment music alone.
As a CD+G album, lyrics will appear on-screen when this album is played on a karaoke machine. The lyrics have also been reprinted in a booklet enclosed in the jewel case, for use when the album is played on a traditional CD player. All songs are in the original show key, and show tempo.
Customer Reviews:
La Cage aux Folles.......2005-08-10
I am hosting a musical La Cage aux Folles night where my guests are invited to perform a song. This karaoke CD is perfect for my purpose - ten great songs followed by the same ten in music only.
The BEST of Karaoke Times!!.......2005-02-26
This is without a doubt the best karaoke version of a Broadway show I've ever heard!
I've purchased or listened to dozens of these types of CDs. The background tracks only versions are not interesting. My friends and I enjoy the Stage Stars recordings because their selections are more complete and the actors they use (while sometimes uneven) are terrific. And this is absolutely the best cast of actors and best choral work on any karaoke CD I've heard. The chorus sounds full and rich and the harmonies are GREAT. The tempos are perfect - just like the original cast, so very easy to sing along with. And the orchestrations are very good, if still a little too synthesized and overpowering. The leads are all wonderful! In particular, I'm a big fan of Miles Phillips. His solos as Georges are literally BETTER than either Broadway production and better than any recording I've ever heard (and I've heard em all)! It's worth buying this CD just to hear him sing Song On The Sand and Look Over There. The entire CD is worth just sitting back and listening to for pleasure. The fact that you get a second set of tracks to sing/rehearse/entertain with is almost a bonus! Great job, Stage Stars! Keep the quality coming!!

Look at Pop Culture 80's Vol. 1.......2007-05-16
If you really need the songs with lyrics, not done nearly as well as the origninal artist, then that's one thing. But if you're looking at this for karaoke songs, then try Pop Culture 80's Volume 1 also from Singing Machine.
80's, Vol. 1
This has every song on this disk except My Sharona, plus 9 other songs all in karaoke format (just music and background vocals). Personally, if I want to hear the lyrics, I'll go listen to the original artist. When I buy a disk for karaoke, I just want karaoke songs, not some studio artist trying to sound like the original.

Overloaded With Media in Post Modern Times? Oooh Yeah Baby!.......2006-06-01
I love this album!
It's probably the only album in my record collection that finds it's place wether I'm in a Pop, Punk, No-wave, Electronic, or Urban mood or when I'm just sick and overloaded with American society.
This album is an exorcism of American culture in the 1980s and is still relevant to todays times. The destructive force of George W. Bush and the brainless celebrities we're bombarded with daily, who eat away our brains as G.W.B. eats away our lives and our civil liberties, all the while we witness the worst disasters in history, are akin to Ronald Reagan and America's obsession with Dynasty and Dallas while nearly an entire population of creative people die of AIDS and the worst plague of world hunger in history wipes out 35,000 people a day.
The contrasts that people point out, "the darkness and Pop irony" make this album such a great document of the underground. Never forget that Madonna started out in a Punk/New Wave band (The Breakfast Club) and was a part of the early Hip-Hop and Club scenes that many NY Punks were going to. The underground in the 80s was a melting pot of styles and scenes all effecting each other through music, performance, art and fashion.
Instead of being phony purists of Avant-Garde taste, like most NYC Hipsters were and are, stepping in line to the same definition of "Cool", Ciccone (Sonic) Youth are honest about their appreciation and disgust with pop culture and express what it feels like to be an informed, creative and individualist person finding that you actually do like Madonna and in a cold, minimalist way the Robert Palmer girls are actually quite bizarre, like something from a Kraftwerk or Klaus Nomi performance.
So, to sum this up. If you find your sick of the monotonous goose-step of indi./alt./underground music these days, crank this up, turn up the bass and excorscise your Mtv induced/social crisis/media disease demons.

Sonic Madonna!.......2006-03-19
This collaboration between Sonic Youth and Mike Watt was really something when it came out. The covers of very very commercial songs by Robert Palmer and MAdonna are found beside some quite weird experimental Sonic Youth fare. However it worked at the time and the CD stands up quite well.
An expirement to justify "experiments".......2004-09-27
Sonic Youth was busy making their grandest masterpiece, Daydream Nation, while working with Mike Watt on the side project Ciccone Youth for The Whitey Album, and though the two couldn't be more different, the conceptual focus of Daydream clearly spilled over into Whitey. It's moments range from complete jokes (Mike Watt's only-occasionally-emphatic vocals for Madonna's "Burnin Up"), to avant garde ("Me and Jill"), to both at once (Kim's brilliant karaoke take on "Addicted to Love"), resulting in an album of cathartic weirdness. It's a relevant, fascinating throw-away ringing with as much artistic savvy as it does humor, all in an attempt to make something like a white hip hop record, and something like the deconstruction of a white hip hop record.
ridiculous, hilarious, terrifying..........2001-01-23
I bought this in seventh grade knowing that it was a Sonic Youth album, but I had no idea that it was going to be so weird. The bizarre drum machines and Madonna covers left me confused, but I kept listening because I loved how unusual it was. It's six years later and now I think it's one of my favorite albums, totally unlike anything else the band has ever done. There's definitely a lot of humor on the album, but the first side is pretty frightening, particularly the atmospheric the band creates on "Platoon" and "Macbeth". But I think the humor combined with the darkness is the album's strong point. Poetry, rap, bad new wave, Robert Palmer, Neu!, stark instrumentals, and of course Madonna join forces to make a real doozy of an album, full of beautiful moments. A must for any Sonic Youth fan or anyone willing to try something new (even when it's 13 years old.)
p.s. the wonderful Mike Watt sings lead on Burnin' Up.
what frank stallone would listen to, had he not been an idio.......2001-01-11
delicious, just wish i was a little older, that way i would've actually been their to hear this when it first came out. if we've learned anything from sonic youth, it's how to be experimental, and how to not make sense. probably one ov the koolest albums i have in my collection, if not the koolest.
while others would point that the best track, or, the best cover on this album is their version ov "into the groove" by Madonna, i'd have to stick with kim's rendition ov, "addicted to love" reasons? 1.i love kim's voice 2. robert palmer is much more ov a cheesebeall then madonna, making this cover even more funny 3.i think kim's just doing kareoke, which makes this recording even more special.
i love it.
