5 out of 5 stars The 3rd superb Vertigo LP on CD........2007-05-28

Superior remaster and presentation for this much loved 3rd Vertigo LP on CD.
An aggressive-pensive Jethro Tull would be a poor comparison as Jade Warrior was a highly intense group of musicians, maybe too good.
Originally did not sell well; imagine for the time poor marketing and exposure.
To me this is the best of the 3 Vertigo albums.
After this one and a move to Island Label the quality though good was never better than here.

5 out of 5 stars Jade Warrior - self-titled (Repertoire).......2007-01-01

Originally released in 1971,this was the band's first album. This is the first time I ever got to check out this UK progressive/art rock group for myself. Not sure as to WHY I was simply SO impressed with this CD,but all I can say is that I plan to keep it in my 'current rotation stack' for awhile. Hard to believe Jade Warrior never got off the ground. I mean, musically speaking, I would put them right up there along the likes of ELP, Yes, Nektar and possible Marillion. Tunes I was most taken with were "Prenormal Day In Brighton", "Dragonfly Day" and "Telephone Girl". Line-up: Glyn Havard-guitar,vocals, Tony Duhig-bass&keyboards and Jon Field-guitar,flute,keyboards&percussion. Duhig and Field came from the psych band July. A must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Ahhhh!.......2005-04-07

This is Jade Warrior's first release from 1971. It was dismissed by most critics as a not commercially viable record. The original recording was carried on Vertigo, this record did sell as a slow sell. Reality is, it is late 60's early 70's MAGIC! Jade Warrior were in uncharted waters and because the focus of the band at that time was on the electric guitar and Flute, they were always compared to Jethro Tull.

The Traveller is the openning track and takes the listener into a calm mystical place- reminiscent of the psychedelic movement of the 60's, but NOT as cliche. The re-master FINALLY got the mix correct! Fuller bass and balanced sound.

After Traveller, they travel into some more potentially commercial pieces on the record like Telephone Girl and Petunia, but head back to exquiste space with pieces like Dragonfly Day.

Jade Warrior influenced many a "new-ager" in their career. It is because of this that this is a monumental recording. I pedrsonally feel the 1st album captures the best from the "Tullish" period of the band. Please keep in mind the record was released in 1971. It still sound excellent today. Exquisite Spin!

    Album Description

Eclectic Discs are pleased to release the classic albums recorded by the legendary Jade Warrior for Island records between 1974 and 1978. The duo of guitarist Tony Duhig and virtuoso flautist and woodwind player Jon Field were signed to Island records in 1974, following the recent break up of the four piece Jade Warrior (who recorded three albums for Vertigo records between 1970 and 1973). Island founder Chris Blackwell signed the duo upon the recommendation of Steve Winwood, declaring Jade Warrior to be "an ornament to my label". Blackwell gave Duhig and Field access to unlimited studio time to create four albums that were later hailed as instrumental masterpieces, all of which fused ethnic African and far eastern influences with superbly innovative rock guitar playing by Tony Duhig.

Way of the Sun was perhaps the band's most fully realised work, drawing upon South American musical influences which blended effortlessly with western rock. Way Of The Sun has been re-mastered from the original master tapes and features extensive liner notes, deluxe slip case packaging and fully restored artwork.

The notes to Elements: The Island Anthology, a 2 CD set that brings together four mid-'70s titles from Jade Warrior, makes the case for the duo as progenitors of everything from ambient to world fusion sounds. Jon Field and the late Tony Duhig were contemporaries of Brian Eno and explored similar soundscapes, with considerably less long-term fanfare. Don't let the grandiloquent song titles scare you too much. --Steven Stolder

      4 out of 5 stars More choices!.......2006-09-12

I know these albums by LP-versions only. The reason for not buying this Elements is: "Waves" was "criminally shortened when released as part of the "Elements" anthology by PolyGram in 1995" - hence my four stars only. (Besides I never liked "Way of the Sun".)
Anyway, these four albums are now - September 2006 - reissued separately, so if you search Jade Warrior at Amazon, your going to find them in original cover design: Floating World (1974), Waves (1975), Kites (1976) and Way of the Sun (1978).
My favourite is the dreamy Waves, second I put Floating World, third Kites.
Jade Warroir made rather fantastic world music from the beginning of the 1970ties, a blend of Asiatic, African, jazz, rock (not so much in fact, in spite of some tough riffs) and ambient music. Brian Eno is said to be an early fan of the (then) duo. Since I was only a teenager when I first listened to them, I am not the right one to estimate how they will sound to a modern ear, if they have stood the ravages of time or if they sound dated. My guess is of course that Jade Warrior will bring you back to the post-hippie era more than anything else. My guess is that when a piece of art got artistic necessity by time of issue, this necessity will remain by the piece, the one way or other.
One sign of my veneration 30 years ago may be the fact that I copied the music to cassettes, in order to save the sensitive LPs for the rest of my life. It became clear that the commerical potential of Jade Warrior wasn't the greatest and there was no reason to recon they would remain in the catalogue. (The only other LP I saved the same way was An Electric Storm (1969) by The White Noise.)

5 out of 5 stars The four Best Jade Warrior in One!.......2004-03-19

The first record I ever heard from Jade Warrior was back in 1975 and I heard Waves. Being a Gentle Giant fanatic back then, I was not taken by the band until I heard their 74 album, Floating Worlds. That record melted me, but

      Then... Wow. Just wow. WOOAAAWWHHH!

I bought Kites. Kites has more of a classical base structure, yet a bit avant gaurd... and WONDERFUL! I agree that is their best effort ever, but NO Jade Warrior is bad! The Way of the Sun got quite a bit of attention on Detroit public Radio and has a special latin flare to it that you do not hear on the other albums. That is the last record with Island Records in 1978.

I will just summurize by stating that these four records had a lot of influence on the so called New Age Movement, though they are not technically new age. Honestly, there is more passion to their music.

Jade Warrior Island recordings actually have a more acoustic feel to them than electronic. They used orchestra, acoustic & electric guitar, piano, choirs, FLUTE, some acoustic and electric effects, percussion, etc. They were the ultimate studio band. I played them through high school and college and still today now and then. They are compositionally original, musically profient and aesthetically pleasing.

Who do I compare them to? They started out sound Jethro Tullish but by 1974, they moved well beyond that space on to new and orientally flavored horizons. The music might make you cry, feel alive and really heal you. The records will move you.

SIDE NOTE: I think the record company is remastering this but I do NOT know that. The mix on this version (UK, Germany) is excellent except Waves could use a remix. However, this is an Un-challenged spin!

4 out of 5 stars A softer direction and a pleasant atmosphere as well..........2003-02-14

Well this anthology includes almost the best stuff, expecially talking about the album "Floating World", here entirely represented: such album represents their change of direction, their turn of career, determined also by the enter of Duihig's brother on guitar. Despite of the presence of pleasant melodies and atmospheres, in between there are surprising powerfull riffs, such as those ones within the track "Monkey Chant" or Red Lotus". The song "Memories of a distant sea" is fine, as its melody is captivating; while "Rainflower" and "Easty" are a Duhig brothers'trademark once more, with a shining personal style and their distinctive guitar sound as well ... it's not a masterpiece, but you find memorable songs and a captivating style too, such as that one regarding tracks like "Songs of the forest or "Arrival of the Emperor...".

A simple but stunning representation of their essential captivating style: it's also very original!!

5 out of 5 stars A "Japanenglish lotus floating down a Welsh stream,...............2003-02-12

      ..or a "3rd Stream"??

I remember well the first time I heard Mr Duhig and Mr Fields, the 2nd incarnation of Jade Warrior. I was first drawn to them by the name , and then by the artwork of the LP , "Floating World".
...and I was "ready" for the musics inside, as the sounds were calling to me subliminally, I "knew" what this recording sounded like before I heard it.(I speak quase-poetically" , of course...)

Quite a few years before the next generations were enjoying "World Musics", "trance Musics","ambient Sounds", and ALL the various hybrids, "Jade Warrior" was exploring far beyond the "BLUES' and rock musics forms that were the rage in those days.

Influences from Stravinsky to Jimi Hendrix, Ramayana monkey- chant to jazz, ....melting the musics of the Orient with the Irish pipes. Jade Warrior was the trunk of the tree that soon blossomed into the global stew of sounds many people now enjoy.

Raging Hendrix-style guitar at times, jazzy reflections others.
Peaceful melodicisms, reminicent of the quieter moments of "progressive rock" musics but filtered through an even more esoteric reality-tunnel.
Shame this group, these musical pioneers, do not reap the success that they had sown, Mr Duhig has since passed on....

This cd represents 4 LPs from the Island Records days, each recording is unique to itself, but with the common denominator being the JW "vision".

Steve Winwood paved the way for JW to be recorded on Island, and I cannot help to believe his "When The Eagle Flies"(Traffic)and his first solo disc on Island Records were not influenced some by Jade Warrior.

Well worth the price, there is , I believe over 150 minutes of sound on these 2 discs. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection despite poor mastering of "Waves".......2002-04-17

This set is a must-have for those who follow the rather enigmatic career of Jade Warrior, or for anyone interested in an innovative blend of light jazz with Far Eastern/Island/South American sounds featuring multilayered flute and tasteful electric and acoustic guitar. This is extraordinarily picturesque and eclectic music, sometimes being ambient, sometimes boistrous, occasionally even raucous, often strongly rhythmic, and always evocative of wonderful atmospheres and otherworldly landscapes. Stevie Winwood even contributes piano and Moog to "Waves." Musically, "Elements" has much to recommend it.

That said, flautist/percussionist Jon Field himself lamented that he was not involved with the remastering process for this particular anthology. He should have been. While "Floating World," "Kites," and "Way of the Sun" were transfered with reasonably good fidelity, the sonic quality of "Waves" leaves much to be desired. Lots of high-end roll-off and an unnaturally cloistered ambience leads me to believe that they used the wrong kind of processing on it during the transfer. This is especially noticeable on quiet acoustic passages. The effect is like using Dolby C to listen to a cassette tape recorded with Dolby B; it pumps and breathes as the musical dynamics shift, and the extreme processing almost totally removes the natural room ambience of the original recording. Also, the original LP version of this release is said to have had some killer dynamics, especially in the bass frequencies, which were actually challenging for most cartridges to track. (This occurred in the places where the whale sings, I'm told.) Jon Field personally manipulated the eq settings to get the best possible sound from the original vinyl. Alas, these have apparently been altered, which is a pity! I've also heard from other Jade Warrior fans that a few minutes were shaved off the end of this particular work so that it would fit the time constaints of a CD. Then again, each CD has over 77 minutes of music crammed onto it, so there's a lot of truly great material to listen to, sonic imperfections or no. Believe me when I say that what's included more than makes up for the defects!

I highly recommend this set. The price is right, and there's a wealth of great sounds on it. Oh, and don't believe the booklet notes that claim Jade Warrior broke up in the 1980s and never recorded again. In fact, they made four more albums: Horizen(1984), At Peace (1989), Breathing the Storm (1992), and Distant Echoes (1993). Furthermore, another work was begun based around the story of Crazy Horse and some ancient Egyptian stuff, but this has yet to be completed.

Hopefully, the individual Island releases will someday be (re)remastered and available, but for now, you really can't go wrong in getting "Elements." Despite its faults, I'm still able to give it 5 stars.

A great find. Snatch it up if you like interesting instrumental sounds that defy easy categorization. Elements is a better find as it collects 4 Jade Warrior lps on 2 cds; but they are all worth seeking out.

4 out of 5 stars As a remastered version it earns a lot!!.......2003-03-12

Well it's difficult to add something diverse, in comparison to such several opinions about this album with exotic moods, relaxing and pleasant atmospheres, almost in the vein of modern New-Age ... the elegant and distinctive sound of such Duhig brothers' guitars and the support of a pleasant flute as well, make this classic an original chapter of instrumental progressive rock, characterized also by some interesting breaks through, plus some stunning and heavy riffs, which earn a lot within this remastered version!

I suggest this odd work to you, which is not a masterpiece but is always enjoyable ...

      2 out of 5 stars 1989.......2002-11-03

Jade Warrior released this recording in 1989. Being a devote fan, I bought it in CD format, which was still not the norm in '89. I was extremely dissappointed. All the fire and peaceful passion is missing from this recording. I just found out that it is the last recording Tony Duhig was involved with at all. He passed away in 1990 from what I understand.
Just be aware of two things: Tony does play on this, but not that much and this recording is geared for the ambient audience. It is not typical even of what John is still capable of. Buy it because it is the last known recording that Tony played on.

      4 out of 5 stars Definitely peaceful.......2002-04-16

A very different sort of offering from the band that are truly the originators of world music, "At Peace" was only recently released on CD. Previously, it had been available only on cassette, and even then it was apparently quite a difficult item to locate. This album finds Tony Duhig and John Field exploring the ambient side of their craft. There are only 3 tracks on this 44-minute long release, and all 3 are very soothingly meditative and melodic. Those familiar with Jade Warrior's music may wonder why there are no sudden bursts of Hendrix-like guitar, unexpected crashes of gongs, or other abrupt shifts in dynamics, but for this work the members by their own admission attempted to write music by "just looking out of the window" onto the English countryside. Great stuff to go to sleep or wake up to, for meditation, and for just putting yourself in a very relaxed mood after a long hard day at work.

Fans of Jade Warrior and their innovative "world sounds" may find this a let-down, but taken for what it is - essentially an ambient release in the 1970's Brian Eno vein, and perhaps slightly reminiscent of Steve Roach's "Quiet Music" series - it can be a highly satisfying experience.

Sadly, this 1989 album was to be the last that featured guitarist and founding member Tony Duhig, who suffered a fatal heart attack on November 11, 1990. I like to think that Mr. Duhig is somewhere out there "at peace" whenever I listen to this.

Kites is yet another milestone album and features the extraordinary talents of Fred Frith (of experimental legends Henry Cow) on violin and makes its debut as a CD release in its own right. Kites has been re-mastered from the original master tapes and features extensive liner notes, deluxe slip case packaging and fully restored artwork.
