In any other band, Dave Davies would have been the star. But sharing the Kinks' stage--and a last name--with older brother Ray often exiled Dave to the background. Still, not even a near-fatal stroke in 2004 has kept him from dominating his sibling when it comes to solo records, Dave's latest a generally lo-fi list of the power anthems and folk-and-blues-rock that made his old band run like clockwork. On this, his first album in five years, the ever-witty and outspoken Davies has plenty to say, spewing anger against Bush and Blair in the rocking "Free Me." "What kind of man can take us to war with blood and murder for oil?" he demands over a grinding guitar circa Lola vs. Powerman. Kinks fans will likely find additional kinship with the pleasant pop of "Remember Who You Are" and "The Waiting Hours," as well as "Come to the River," which rides a monster blues riff that only Davies can brandish. The record even navigates into the experimental, including a spacey instrumental ("The Blessing") and the trippy spoken-word title song, new territory for a 60-year-old legend that clearly now rides anywhere but the backseat. --Scott Holter

      3 out of 5 stars Mr Bungle.......2006-11-17

This album is pretty much a blatent rip off of Mr Bungle's California, it just adds a little dash from a terrible band named Mushroomhead.

While some of the ideas sound good it just makes me think id rather listen to Mr Bungle's California. If you want to hear a band that takes a large influence from Bungle but doesnt make a blatent rip off check out Estradasphere, they are far more talented in every degree.

If you have a terrible taste in music and love mushroomhead or dog fashion disco this will be a great album to start out with.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Sound!!!!!.......2006-02-04

I Enjoy all types of rock, nu-metal, as well as heavy and progressive metal music, so I am not looking for one particular type of music but rather talented musicians. The Alter Boys are just that, very creative and talented.Their sound is a blend of all types of music with a jazz feel. What surprises me with them is that the tracks are very melodic and not disjointed with smooth transition when blending these sounds. If I had to make a comparison to another band I would say if you enjoy the masterful music from Faith No More (with a touch more humor), You would most likely like the Alter Boys. Check them out you can't go wrong. I wish them a long career as they fill a crtical need in what I consider a stagnent music culture. Everyone is beginning to sound the same in their own genre. These guys are a breath of fresh air!!! Keep Up the great work.

Great "driving in your car, or cleaning the house" album
Eclectic mix of jazz, metal, and comedy skits
A must have for DFD,Tub Ring fans
If you havent hear Dog Fashion Disco, pickup "The City is Alive Tonight"

5 out of 5 stars album full of talent.......2005-10-19

The Alter Boys are like no other. My son who is 7 years old is even a fan!Their sound is very unique, I can't wait to see them live! I've already gotten a taste of the great talents after seeing Unified Culture live at Peebody's in Cleveland, Ohio which is another project band involving a few members of the Band Alter Boys. What a great show!Looking forward to seeing the Alter Boys in the beginning of November!

5 out of 5 stars Exotic and Beautiful!.......2005-05-31

This is one of the best albums I have ever heard. It is extremely eclectic and mixes a varieety of different genres perfectly. Buy this album. My main point in writing this review is only because I felt the need to rate this masterpiece. Also has a few very amusing skits tossed in the mix. FTRC!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hail your metal overlords..........2007-01-02

Quite a few bands lately have been of the mind that taking a single, meandering, horrendously long song and making an entire album out of it is a great and novel idea. Unfortunately, most of the time what you get is a crawling exercise in patience and a burning desire for the album in question to be re-arranged into a condensed, 5-minute endurable version of what you just had to sit through (read: Green Carnation). Sometimes, though, a group of guys get together who have so many ideas running through their heads that a single-song album becomes not only a great idea, but a vessel for ultimate expression.

This is such an album. In its simplest form, I is a 21 minute summary of everything that Meshuggah has done prior. The high-speed staccato thrashing; the calculated rhythmic irregularities; the eerie stretches of ambience; the swirling, alien guitar leads; the atonal roaring and paradoxical, destructive lyricism - it's all here. However, it's all tied together by a menacing atmosphere of utter devastation that makes even the creeping onslaught of Nothing seem tame in comparison. Whether the unwavering and machine-like rolling tom patterns that constitute the hypnotizing introduction, the absolutely crushing breakdown of roaring guitars and time-shattering drums that occurs at around the 3:30 mark, Fredrik Thordendal's mechanical assault at 5:40 which consists of an incessant flurry of notes backed by an unadulterated display of inhuman endurance and accuracy from drummer Tomas Haake, the disturbing reverberations of oddly conflicting notes that mark the transition from the chaotic permutations that came before to the massive soundscapes that will follow, the heavy-as-hell riffing that comes in at the 10:30 mark which encompasses what's probably the only moment in this entire song that you'll be able to effectively headbang to without getting confused, the diabolical whispering of Jens Kidman at 12:00 and the hive-like guitar lead from Fredrik that soon follows, the slow pulsing of dark arpeggios that steadily builds into a Nothing-era displaced pattern of shifting drums and twisted guitars at 17:00, or the standard Meshuggah-esque rhythmic motif that slowly coalesces into a lengthy stretch of foreboding feedback that closes out the song - the only word to properly describe this is... monolithic. Without the respite of track breaks, this becomes an unstoppable machine bent on the complete annihilation of everything in its path.

I is a tremendous achievement in Meshuggah's career and in the world of metal. While there are albums out there that are louder, heavier, and more extreme, none of them come close to exhibiting the cerebral and uncompromising nature of the music found here. The only album that does manage to sort of come close is Meshuggah's own follow-up, Catch Thirty-Three, but even that has more of a post-apocalyptic feel than the malevolent destruction found on I.

      Absolutely mammoth music.

5 out of 5 stars Better take an 'advil' before listening to this.......2006-09-04

Meshuggah is world renowned for their head-splitting, gut-wrenching, Swedish Math/Death metal, and this song, yes thats right, song, proves the title of Meshuggah right. This 20 minutes of pure, unadulterated metal will literally peel your face off, if not for the 1-2 minute break they give you to catch your breath.

Anyone familiar with Meshuggah, such as their albums Chaosphere, Destroy Erase Improve, and Catch 33 will love this song. I advise every metalhead to check this out.

Also get Meshuggah's Nothing; its not as fast, but just as complex.

4 out of 5 stars Very cool indeed..........2006-03-31

with one caveat - if you haven't liked Meshuggah in the past then you won't now.

On the other hand, if you do, especially post DEI Meshuggah, then you will like this. It is just awesome. That is not to say it isn't flawed, it is. It can get repetitive, but you can tell they are really trying to do something new. It is like someone took Echoes by Pink Floyd, but retracked it in hell with a bunch of dump trucks playing the instruments (If this sounds like it would be awful, see the caveat at the beginning.) It is thick, and hard to wrap your head around as a concept. That is not to say it is pretentiously complicated or dense; it is just long, dischoradant, and difficult to take in as one piece. This is precisely what makes it Meshuggah. Thick as a heat wave in a Louisiana Bayou, but absolutely all over the place. I enjoyed it quite a bit and thought it was much better than Nothing.

My only response to some of the one star reviews is for people to be leary of reviewers who seem to only enjoy telling you what they hate. I've noticed some of the one stars here only rate things they give one star for 95% of there reviews. I tend to think this means they are just joy kills.

If you enjoy lurking the very murky backwaters of Meshuggah's more recent albums, but miss some of the thrash influence they had, check this out. Give it a couple of tries so you will get to know it, and I am pretty sure you will find it a fun peice of music to pop in and drift off too.

      5 out of 5 stars Brutality incarnate........2006-01-13

Sometime in late 1994, a sentient blue-gray blob of alien slime landed on Earth and was enthralled by a stereo playing King Crimson's "Thrak." It then decided to further explore this idea of overlapping polyrhythms by building even more complex mathematical structures (while increasing the viciousness by a factor of 2.736). It managed to take possession of a group of Swedes and decided to channel its vision of mathematical insanity through their own death-metal sound. The result: Meshuggah. There ain't much in the way of melody, but there's the technicality/complexity of four other bands, combined with the brutality of three more (or one if that other band is Strapping Young Lad). It's an acquired taste.. except for the masochistic.. but it's a brain-melting blend of cerebral and visceral that's like nobody else. All sanity abandon, ye who enter.

I is probably the best introduction to Meshuggah out there. At 21 minutes it's easier to digest than a full-length album, but it shows all their facets in that short time.. slow-flowing guitar interludes, inhuman shredding, wickedly staggered rhythms, industrial torture, hyper-lightning freakouts, it's all here. The great thing is that even at ludicrous speed (check that 5:40-6:21 stretch!), there's no shortage of invention and ear-bending note lines to follow. That's not to even mention the inhuman drumming, which is as multilayered as it is savage (Tomas Haake is the Elvin Jones of metal).

Someone below complained about the first 90 seconds being nothing but mind-numbing repetition, but listen more closely and you'll realize that it's almost never the same riff twice. And that's the way it is through the whole EP; at first it's just a series of uneven pounding beats, but then time begins to reveal the offsetting & complementary rhythm patterns that underlie everything. Then it's time to get out the abacus and hope your brain doesn't short-circuit if you try to unravel what's going on.

If you like your demonic screams served with something a little smarter than ordinary death/doom metal, give Meshuggah a try. Tranquilizers and post-traumatic therapy optional.

      4 out of 5 stars Solid Record.......2006-01-13

Meshuggah has always been hit or miss for me. Granted 'Nothing' basically blew my mind, but some of their earlier work reeked of stale Slayerism. 'I' works well for what it is: an album full of riff after riff afer fill. The only problem I can see with it is its predictability. Intro / Riff / Vocal /Intro / Riff / Vocal / repeat ad naseum. Still, the E.P. is solid, and all of the problems with it were fixed for 'Catch 33'.

another Thee Majesty Genesis P-Orridge Spoken Word series output, initially released on Invisible records, this re-issue on Voiceprint is far superior in sound quality, it has been digitally remastered and better packaging, extensive liner notes and pics. Other spoken word series definitely worth purchasing and listening to are "Wordship", "At Stockholm" and "A Hollow Cost" make sure they are the official release.

This is another excellent recording, the first couple of tracks have a techno trance like feel (the 2nd track has samples of a TG classic, "Hamburger Lady") the rest of the tracks veers towards experimental, a mix bag of "songs" indeed. All tracks are pure sonic listening pleasure. Please support this artist, buy the official releases. [..]

Yes, thats right kids, the American Werewolves are back w/ more creepy crawly hold-on-to-you-tight doo-wop horror punk. If you dug their debut "we wont stay dead" then you'll love this album. Theres about two songs on it that are pretty much filler, but other than that, its great. Tracks like "1968" "scream a little scream" and "rock-a-die baby" will surely be favorites of kids who like to drive by themselves at night combing their hair and crying.

I'm South African and the first guy to review this CD on Amazon--Where's my prize?

Anyway, I ordered this with Rebel meets Rebel, and although I've eagerly been awaiting both the releases, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Jeff's country outing. First off, his "singing" voice takes getting used to. Fact is, in my opinion he can't really sing to save his life, but this is where the strange appeal of this album started for me. His out of tune, almost druken singing combines well with the subject matter, giving it a sort of real world grit. The playing throughout is okay, nothing stellar to report, but all in all it grew on me with every listen. It's not as instantly gratifying as Rebel meets Rebel, but give it a chance it it's peculiar charms might just bring a smile to your face. One major gripe I had though was Jeff's interpretation of what the bell in the Kris Kristofferson song should sound like--I always imagined a church bell--he used something sounding like a doorbell?!

All things being said, this won't be everybody's cup of tea, but if you're a Jeff Walker fan like me and you appreciate his humour you might just like this.

          5 out of 5 stars Kick ass.......2007-01-14

Great bands and fantastic attempts to honor the melvins except for the first and last track

3 out of 5 stars Reaching Very High.......2006-11-01

There is a reason tribute albums are not usually respected or sought after items. The bands chosen are not always winners and too many copycat renditions beg the question "Why even bother?" Thankfully, with few exceptions this is not the case.

Mare opens, I loved their debut EP and I wait with baited breath for a full length but I went from hard and ready to soft in about thirty seconds of this. I can appreciate abstract interpretation and I guess it's nice to have a sort of prelude to the rocking but this doesn't sound Mare or Melvins and saying this is a cover of ANY song is a waste of time.

Honeybucket is the song I figure Dillinger could get super technical with the easiest, and indeed does it work wonders.

The Bit is one of my favorite Melvins songs and the great Mastodon do us a service by giving an already great song a surge of adrenaline. No sitar effects, more uptempo, the awesome riffs are extra heavy, and you will hear a great Buzz impression.

Strapping Yound Lad adds some layers to Zodiac and it sounds good, but SYL are too polished and produced for me anyway and I have the same problem here.

The masters of brutality: Pig Destroyer blew me away with their previous Melvins cover of Oven off the 38 Counts of Battery album, so I was a tad disappointed with Claude seeing as how it's so short and they dial down the extremity to about the level of The Stooges on heroin, but that turns out to be awesome in and of itself. PxDx will never disappoint even with something out of left field.

Keelhaul plus High on Fire tastes great with dual vocals!

Strapon Factory plays Joan of Arc with great emphasis on drone/noise elements.

What may seem an odd pairing, Isis & Agoraphobic Nosebleed team up to deliver far and above the heaviest track on this album. Aaron Turner and Scott Hull's guitars will crush you, taking the full nine-minute chunk they need to correctly pay homage to one of the best Melvins songs.

The quality of the bands continue with Eyehategod, very welcome here. Who needs to know more than EHG is playing a Melvins song? I mean that's just awesome.

Blessing the Hogs do a very noisy longer version of Hog Leg and it amuses me to think they chose the song based on it's name alone.

CKY & Grarkill deliver a better Laughing with Lucifer at Satan's Shadow than I ever thought possible, apparently they DO know how to get heavy, and Jess Margera can stop doing his impression of Lars Ulrich for a few minutes! I was amazed.

Made Out of Babies turn out one of the essential tracks off the album and my fascination with vocalist Julie Christmas only grows more intense. By downplaying the ska elements from Bar X the Rocking M and adding their own tension building and release this track easily rivals the original.

Pincer 2 does A Capella versions of two songs to close the album. It's pretty cool I suppose and fits in with the Melvins love of experimentation anyway.

So as far as tribute albums go, I'd say this one is light years ahead of the usual way they're slopped together. The bands that appear all have respect for the Melvins prevalent in their own work and seem to have taken time with the arrangements. There's a fair mix of straightforward covers and weird tangents, so all needs are met.

So you've seen the great bands on here, they're playing the Melvins songs you love, i'd say it's time to $$$.

2 out of 5 stars Blecch, but with some decent moments.......2006-09-01

I'd like to do another track-by-track review, because I find it impossible to summarize this record as a whole. Its parts are too disparate.

          1. Mare - Night Goat: They seem to have missed the letter that explained that these are covers for a Melvins cover record and not original tracks for a pseudo avant-garde college compilation. Good recording/engineering though.
          2. The Dillinger Escape Plan - Honey Bucket: This is just plain sloppy, missing rhythmic patterns and in a few cases adding or dropping beats. Sounds thin and hollow.
          3. Mastodon - The Bit: Not bad at all. A well done, faithful cover.
          4. Strapping Young Lad - Zodiac: A little overproduced for my taste, and their choice of root-fifth-octave instead of the original root-octave jump is odd. A bit theatrical, overall middling; the Brutal Truth cover of this song is much better.
          5. Pig Destroyer - Claude: Please return to practicing in the basement until you can learn to all hit a beat at the same time. Thanks.
          6. High on Fire/Keelhaul - Oven: Decently played instruments; I am not a fan of the liberties that have been taken with the vocals. Middling production.
          7. Meatjack - Shevil: Not all bad but completely lacks the sparseness of the original, which I felt was its best quality. If this was toned down a notch or two it would be much better.
          8. Strapadon Factory - Joan of Arc: Finally someone chose to go really heavy with the right song. Rather over-compressed though.
          9. Isis/Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Boris: I find it hard to believe that this is really Isis. The guitars sound like a vacuum cleaner. It's a very faithful cover but once again has lost the sparsity of the original.
          10. Absentee - Revolve: That vocalist's voice..not my cup of tea, but this is how to do a note-perfect cover. Seriously, they have my commendation for being absolutely spot-on.
          11. Eyehategod - Easy As It Was: I would have enjoyed this cover as an instrumental, and if it was not recorded on a boombox.
          12. Dog Fashion Disco - Anaconda: They have utterly destroyed a classic. No words can describe how truly awful this is.
          13. Disengage - Raise a Paw: Someone should let these folks in on the miracles of 1. bass frequencies and 2. drum mics. Otherwise well played, though the growl of the original's vocals is totally absent.
          14. Blessing the Hogs - Hog Leg: Congratulations on turning a great song into repetitive commercial-metal crap.
          15. CKY/Gnarkill - Laughing with Lucifer at Satan's Sideshow: The y should have stolen the original's samples; it would have been perfect. I really want to believe that this was the version that the Melvins wrote, but they recorded the version on Honky to be purposefully less accessible.
          16. Maritime Murder - Copache: Not bad at all. All around a well played, faithful cover from the entire band.
          17. Made Out of Babies - Bar-X the Rocking M: Better production would have made this totally amazing. Makes for a rare good lower-fi/lower-budget version of a Melvins track. It makes me want to see this band live.
          18. Pincer 2 - Echohead/Don't Piece Me: It's as if the band from Track 1 woke up and realized that they needed to to a Melvins cover. Still awful.

2 out of 5 stars 'We Reach:The Music Of The Melvins' - Various Artists (Fractured) 2 1/2 stars.......2006-06-08

Okay,I'm a casual fan of tribute CD releases. But,this one of the Melvin's repertoire is 'okay'.Total of eighteen cuts.Features bands like Mare,Pig Destoyer,High On Fire,Dog Fashion Disco among others I've never even remotely heard of before paying tribute to Buzz Osbourne(no relation)and crew. One good thing about 'We Reach...' is that it'll simply have most fans craving to hear the original versions of these songs.

2 out of 5 stars What did you expect?.......2005-09-18

If you buy this then you are either a fan of Melvins, one of the bands on this tribute, or both. Either way, at best a tribute album will just make you want to listen to the original band, and this one is no exception. The bands on here are of three varieties: those that try to do faithful renditions of the original song, those that make the original song their own, and those that make songs that have no resemblance at all to the original. The bands that do well here are of the middle category...taking the source material and adding some of their own sound.
          1) Mare (Nightgoat)--Haven't heard this band before, but their "cover" doesn't contain a single note of the original song--a very forgettable bit of keyboard and vocal looping

          2) Dillinger Escape Plan (Honey Bucket)--Try to do a faithful cover which is marred by horrible production...it sounds like it was recorded with a boombox

          3) Mastodon (The Bit)--Great band that plays this song live from time to time...pretty much a note for note cover, but still good

          4) Strapping Yound Lad (Zodiac)--One of the best tracks here...they take the original and add some great keyboard flourishes that create a much more ambient experience than the original

          5) Pig Destroyer (Claude)--Note for Note cover marred by weak vocals...why bother trying to sound just like Melvins? Think they're trying to be hardcore by covering a rare track...

          6) High On Fire/Keelhaul--Pretty good, faithful to the original and Matt Pike sounds like Lemmy, which is cool

          7) Meatjack (Shevil)--Good, note for note cover that will just make you want to hear the original

          8) Strapadon Factory (Joan of Arc)--members of SYL, Mastodon, and Fear Factory--one of the better covers here

          9) Isis/Agoraphobic Nosebleed (Boris)--see #7

          10) Absentee (Revolve)--note for note...silly vocals

          11) EyeHateGod (Easy As It Was)--awful...sounds weak compared to the original...horrible production and vocals are really bad

          12) Dog Fashion Disco (Anaconda)--I think they thought this was a Faith No More tribute...

          13) Disengage (Raise A Paw)--see #7

          14) Blessing the Hog (Hog Leg)--the mighty Sean Ingram--this rocks like Coalesce, so it's all good

          15) CKY/Gnarkill (Laughing with Lucifer...)--why cover this? but it really isn't as bad as it could have been I guess...heavy, plodding riff...

          16) Maritime Murder (Copache)--trying to hard to be Melvins

          17) Made Out of Babies (Bar X...)--Great cover...their singer is awesome, and this is a hard song to cover

          18) Pincer 2 (Echohead/Don't Piece Me)--by far the worst song on the album--is this Mike Patton or a guy who really wishes he were? Not a single note here, just Patton-esque vocal masturbation...what an insult
