Martin Short's 2006 Broadway show Fame Becomes Me is a love letter to old-school showbiz doubling as a send-up of self-serving celebrity memoirs. This "comedy musical" is obviously the work of someone who adores not only the golden age of Broadway but also that of a certain style of entertainment you may call vaudeville variety. The idea is that Short is looking back at his own life (with some libertiesif a celeb out there is not known for outrageous behavior, it's gotta be him) through songs and skits, and with the help of his own TV personae, such as Jiminy Glick and Ed Grimley. It helps that said songs were written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman: The cocreators of Hairspray can zippily pastiche everything from The Wizard of Oz to Wicked. For this supposed ego trip, Short has also surrounded himself with a crackerjack cast that includes MAD TV's chameleonic Nicole Parker, versatile funsters Brooks Ashmanskas and Mary Birdsong, and Carpathia Jenkins, who blows the roof off the joint with the self-explanatory "A Big Black Lady Stops the Show"-a number that mocks the Broadway habit of hiring African-American belters for to deliver one song. In an ironic twist, Jenkins herself is woefully underutilized in Fame Becomes Me but at least she gets one of the two bonus tracks, "Frieda May's Lament," to herself. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
In the grand American traditions of musical theater, sketch comedy and shameless self-promotion comes Fame Becomes Me, Martin Short's uproarious new comedy musical that has critics in hysterics! In Fame Becomes Me, the "phenomenally gifted" Martin Short (New York Post) and his "superb" cast (USA Today) sing, dance and mercilessly mock others as they race through a whirlwind revue that's part variety show, part celebrity send-up and "the best time on Broadway!" (WNBC-TV). Featuring original music from the composer and lyricist of Hairspray and South Park, Fame Becomes Me is Broadway's most riotous party and you're invited!

Its Better to Have Loved A Short, Than To Have Never Loved A Tall..........2007-07-31
This musical is still growing on me, and in another week I'd probably have it at five stars. This, of course, with a first listen putting it probably at two stars. However, the more I listen to it, the more jokes you pick up on, and the funnier and better it becomes.
This soundtrack has a little bit of everything, and while others say that, this really isn't that much of an exaggeration. Impersonations (Joan Rivers, Jodie Foster, Judy Garland, Ellen DeGeneres, to name a few), a career review (basically any Martin Short character you can remember), and parodies of other musicals (Wicked, Dreamgirls, Company, and Jesus Christ Superstar I remember mentions of off the top of my head), and jokes galore (puns to celebrity jokes to an inappropriate, but hilarious, Noah joke).
Now, this soundtrack isn't perfect. Its very choppy and frankly after the portions involving his wife it goes downhill and gets a little wacky, even more so than in the beginning.
Still, its worth listening to. Its got a lot of witty exchanges and will be very enjoyable for a while. I'm a little worried as to how this will age (Britney Spears jokes, Fidel Castro on his deathbed, and a few others), but rather than worry about what I'm going to think about it in five or ten years, I'm simply going to enjoy it now.
Very Funny!.......2007-06-12
I admit I didnt know much about this show, and was under the impression it was a one man show of sorts and just comedy, but its not at all. The songs are quite amusing and witty and the cast and Short are in top form. Capathia Jenkins is especially hilarious in her musical turns. Definitely a keeper for Broadway musical fans. If you enjoyed the score of Hairspray, you should enjoy this too. (same people). Why am I the only person reviewing this?

A Great singer - but ageing.......2005-08-18
I am 60 years of age and wanted a good album of GBS which would remind me of my earlier years. I am somewhat disappointed with this because it is a fairly recent recording (late 1990's) and the great singer sounds a bit tired, his age reveals itself in his voice. There is no doubting however the quality, even of the older man, but for me I will continue to hunt for earlier recordings. The selection of pieces can be very subjective but I think the fan of GBS would be very pleased with the tracks laid on this CD. In addition the way he overcomes the weakness in his voice by slight modifications both to pace and range of note is very tastefully done.
Like all of his music this too will grow on you if you give it time.
If this was all there is I would buy it... but I know there is better... somewhere.
Songs from God's Servant.......2004-07-01
I happened to listen to Bev Shea from Bill Gaither's Home Coming Series. What a wonderful man & his songs. They stir my spirit & soul. The words have deep meaning. I would recommend any buyer who has some classic taste to get this album and listen & sing along realising the words. May GOD Bless such people and give them long life and raise more people like Bev Shea for HIS glory.
I am buyer from India. Thanks for the wonderful job done by Amazon. The packing was excellent. Although it took a long time around 1 1/2 months to reach my place, it reached us safe.
May Jesus our Lord & Saviour be glorified by the talents that he has blessed us with.
Thanks

My favorite gospel singer..........2001-10-28
How beautiful the voice and the soul behind it! George Beverly Shea is a wonder. This album showcases his colorful bass-baritone voice excellently, revealing a man dedicated to God and spreading the Word. The arrangements are tasteful, with the accompaniments neither being overpowering, cloying, nor pompous... which can be hard to find in a modern gospel recording. And those who have read some of my other reviews know I love powerfully written and performed music.
I must take the opportunity to thank Mr. Shea for recording This Is My Father's World, which is one of my favorites. Kudos are also deserved for Steal Away, one of the most beautiful of all the spirituals. He does I Will Sing the Wondrous Story as a personal testimony to God.
George Beverly Shea, to my ears, has always sung in a manner that shows a vast respect for God and the people he sings for. God bless him!
This is one of George Beverly Shea's best CDs........1999-08-19
George Beverly Shea does an excellent job with the songs on this CD, especially Little Brown Church. No one can sing that like he can!! I'd recommend his CDs to anyone, anytime. He's the best!!

As a veteran of Alison Krauss & Union Station and the Lonesome River Band (not to mention countless country and bluegrass recording sessions), Dan Tyminski had certainly paid his dues before his spot on the O Brother soundtrack brought him worldwide acclaim. The erstwhile Soggy Bottom Boy frontman issued his solo debut a few months before the soundtrack hit, and it features a wide and impressive range of current and former bandmates (including Krauss on a pair of tracks) plus several other A-list instrumentalists. The result is a deftly executed survey of the bluegrass table circa 2000, a menu that includes melodic pop, rousing gospel, hard-driving instrumentals, new compositions in a traditional style, and revived old favorites. --Marc Greilsamer
Customer Reviews:
The Doobie Shea breakthrough.......2003-09-09
A good friend of mine's family happens to own Doobie Shea records, so needless to say Dan's been around alot longer than "O ' Brother Where Art Thou". I Do have to say that "Carry Me Across the Mountain" envokes traditional bluegrass gospel and does not slack on musical talent. I would suggest this album, and many more under the Doobie Shea label, to any bluegrass fan.If you wish to check out more artists signed by Tim Austin at Doobie Shea, check out ... . And Please support you local musicians.
Bee-You-Tee-Ful Bluegrass.......2003-06-21
Dan is emerging as a leading voice in the Bluegrass scene. His musical inclusion of "Man of Constant Sorrow " from the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou" catapulted Dan into the limelight and greatly widened public awareness of him and Bluegrass Music.
My only criticism of the CD is that the tracks move from "kick-ass" high energy bluegrass to slow romantic bluegrass ballads then back again. Too mood swingish! Otherwise, I highly recommend this CD for anyone's Bluegrass collection.
In my top 5.......2003-06-01
One of the CDs that never stays behind. Every CD has at least one song I have to skip - in this case, it's Please Dear Mommy but the rest of the music is top-notch in my opinion. There are 4 or 5 in my case that get played over and over and over... this is one of them. When Dan comes out with his #2 CD, I'll buy it sight unseen and tune unheard.
Disappointed.......2003-05-12
As a big fan of Union Station and O Brother, I had high expectations for this CD. Boy, was I disappointed. Most of the songs are either trite, sappy or too religious (not traditional gospel). Big, big disappointment.
The Future of Bluegrass Is In Good Hands.......2002-10-07
Since joining Alison Krauss's band Union Station in the late-Nineties, Dan Tyminski's star has been on the rise. With the release of "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Tyminki's stock went through the roof. [In case you've been living in a cave for the past couple years, its'sTyminski's vocal on "Man of Constant Sorrow."] This album was released just months before the relase of the OBWAT? soundtrack, and it's filled with wonderful traditional bluegrass music. Tony Rice lends support on a couple tracks as does Alison Krauss along with all the members of Union Station. Favorite tracks include the gospel number "Praise the Lord" (co-written by Tyminski) and the Louvin Brothers cover, "Tiny Broken Heart." With artists like Dan Tyminski to carry the bluegrass torch into the 21st Century, the future of bluegrass looks bright indeed. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Absolutely marvelous... but there is not enough!.......2001-10-16
George Beverley Shea sings these old favorites splendidly, with a full and loving voice. One could just feel this man's intense committment to God, pouring out generously in his beautiful bass-baritone. One complaint however: there is not enough of him here! This album times out at less than half an hour. True, the price is low; but for those of us who love Shea's voice, that is not an excuse! More! More! MORE! Other than that, I recommend this album highly!
A truly upliftng CD.......2001-08-22
In the world of post-modern cynicism it is good to find music based on rock solid values sung with meaning and passion.
As a CD it does not have the longest playing time (just over 28 minutes) but that is more than made up for in the quaity of the content.
A deep rich voice giving these hymns and sacred songs the pesentarion they deserve.
No matter what your religion or what branch of Christianity you may be cming from this CD will uplift nad relax and provide a brief time for quiet reflection.
Brilliant.

George Beverly Shea does such a wonderful job on this CD. His voice is so mellow and peaceful!! It is soothing to listen to him. One also hears hope and joy and happiness. I think that this is a great CD and I would recommend it to anyone.

Just what I was looking for..........2005-06-10
First off, I just want to say that I LOVE the String Quartet Tribute series... I recently discovered these CDs while planning my wedding and am so glad that I did. It's so nice to be able to incorporate modern music into the ceremony without having to worry about the "appropriateness" of the vocals. In addition to the tribute to Jessica Simpson, I also have the String Quartet Tribute to Coldplay. I'm completely satisfied with them both. Granted, I'm by no means a musician, but I do have the ability to appreciate great music. And I feel that these CDs are definitely worth looking into. :)
The songs on this particular album are great - in my opinon, anyway. I especially want to remark on the CD's version of "Take My Breath Away" - absolutely beautiful. I had been looking for an instrumental version of this piece to walk down the aisle to and found exactly what I was looking for on this CD. :)

Album Description
Our Shangri-La, the new album of duets from veteran Southern California country singers Rick Shea and Patty Booker not only exemplifies the West Coast's once vibrant honky-tonk tradition, it damn well resurrects a free-wheeling artistic spirit that is in danger of extinction. Recorded with ace musicians, the album mixes brand new originals with a couple of choice old favorites into a complex and rewarding series of emotional and psychological statements. Our Shangri-La draws from the Wynn Stewart-Jan Howard/Buck Owens-Rose Maddox school of California pairings even as it drives contemporary expression dramatically forward, the classic blend of standard approach and chance-taking that has always characterized California country.
Customer Reviews:
Revitalizing the Country duet.......2004-01-25
Duet singing has fueled country music since its beginnings, both in family acts like the Delmores and Louvins, and superstar pairings like Dolly & Porter and Conway & Loretta. Nashville's recent duets have tended more toward marketing events than career paths, leaving those outside the mainstream to carry the torch. Shea and Booker, veterans of Southern California's honky-tonk scene, fan the flames of the country duet with a strong dose of the Golden State's recalcitrant twang.
The pair of singer-songwriters first met as disc-mates on 1992's "A Town South of Bakersfield, Vol. 3." Then, as now, they charted a course through Bakersfield, with Shea's tenure in Dave Alvin's Guilty Men adding a helping of roots-rock energy. Booker's voice is reminiscent of Rosie Flores, but together with Shea, especially on tunes like "The Bull and The Beaver," they recreate the high-low magic of The Kendalls.
Beyond a few covers, such as the trail-dusted "Summer Wine," the duo's own arrangements and songs form the album's impressive core. The spare "You Take Me for Granted" would break the heart of Merle Haggard's original protagonist, and Shea's "Just a Matter of Time" crackles with the magnetism of Johnny & June.
Shea's production keeps the voices front-and-center without short-changing the fine instrumentalists who set up the album's mood. Special mention must be given to steel player Gary Brandin, whose haunting runs, bell-like peels and weeping bends are nearly a third voice within the duets. This is an exquisite album that impresses upon first play, and reveals more charms with every spin.
the golden days of duets.......2004-01-05
Our music-if you are reading this you know what I mean-doesn't get much radio play as it falls between the niches, but in our kind of music a renaissance of glorious male female duets is taking place, and this is a prime example. Rick and Patty play off each others voices and styles beautifully; there is no way that a solo artist can make this sort of thing happen-not a bad track on the cd, hardly a bad 5 seconds. Chip Taylor and Carrie Rodriquez are the current aces in this area, but that is mostly because of their totally masterful song-writing- in terms of musicality there is little to chose between the acts-and there is no higher praise than that.
Country Music The Way It Should Be.......2003-12-31
A magnificent album from start to finish, and every cut is a gem. Patty Booker has an incredible voice and range from the depths of sorrow to sheer joy and the best of honky tonk. Rick Shea is an outstanding musician, song writer and vocalist. The pairing of their soulful and distinctive voices gives an added dimension to the songs that make them duets in the best sense of the word, as their voices wonderfully compliment each other. The material and performances are all first rate with outstanding original songs and terrific interpretations of classics.
