Fuelled by the ska of Prince Buster ("Madness"), and inspired by the insanity of British music, right from the start Madness were a quintessentially English band. Two-tone more by association than fact, they came to the fore at the same time as the Specials, with a ska beat, a pop heart, and a lunatic smile (who else would update "Swan Lake" in such an unorthodox way?). While the title track lives on beyond them, there were plenty of other gems here, including "Night Boat to Cairo" and "My Girl." The Nutty Sound was infectious as measles, but a lot more fun. Chris Nickson

Old music that does not age.......2007-04-05
I am 53 years old and just the past few months started listening to SKA. Maybe out of my love for Sublime and because my 19 year old son loved SKA so much before he was taken from me. Anyway, this CD is great. I plan to purchase another one or two. The beat is always uplifting, but not annoying like some. You can turn it up or down, it is just good.
The nutty shot heard round the world.......2007-01-20
What a record this is. What fun it generates. To be a young kid when this came out was to know pure, unadulterated, danceable bliss...
I danced to it in '80 when my little brother first brought it home.
I danced to it non-stop with Lynne in the summer of '87.
My four-year old daughter and I danced our hearts out to it last night.
This record is joyous. It's nutty. It's Madness.
It's perfect.......2007-01-13
This is the cream of the 70's Brittish ska bands.
This finds the perfect balance between the bouncy fun of this style of music with quality songwriting and musicianship. This has got to be almost 30 years old yet it still holds up. You cannot really say that about Madness's cohorts, The Specials and The Selector.
The songs are terrific. "One Step Beyond" is the perfect introduction. It totally establishes the mood. Love that squonkin sax! "My Girl" has such a catchy hook and what a gorgeous chorus. The piano really gives that song it's color. "Bed & Breakfast" is a terrific dance tune with a killer sax solo. "Night Boat to Cairo" is an instrumental for a couple of minutes and then the strum on the upstroke kicks in and the song's tempo speeds up. "The Prince" slows it down where the stye is more reggae than ska.
A greatest hits compilation is good but this album is when the band hit their peak, when they really hit their stride. "My house" is more famous but these songs have a common thread for the era.
I always loved the album cover of this. It depicts these guys having fun and I always imagined that Madness was having fun and strutting like on the cover when playing these songs.
This is a masterpiece! I am not a huge fan of all their works but it all came together/never got any better then "One step beyond"
They went..................one step beyond!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-03-24
Hey you!!!!!!!!!, lately Madness have come to my mind due to young advertisers for alcoholic beverages that are currently trying to introduce good taste in music to the depressing likes youth have in this days in Mexico (or maybe this advertisers are snob and try to impress ignorant fools i dont know), one of the first memories i have in music in my life is definitelly with Madness, actually i think it was the first one, before Beatles, before Zep, before Presley before Kiss or any other artist. I should have been like seven or eight years old when i liked to watch the Madness videos that were transmited saturday morning between cartoons, before all that space were filled with advertising as today, i liked that band when i was a child and i love them today cuts like "just another day" , "nigth boat to Cairo", "Michael Caine" ,"my girl" and of course "one step beyond" are timeless classics , band such as The Mighty Mighty Bostons and many others cant deny Madness influence they were plenty funny and genious, One Step Beyond is the debut album actually neither themselves were capable to achieve a bigger sucess after this one but the roots of ska punk are there untill the end of time.

Nothing disappointing here.........2006-02-09
I remember first listening to this and loving every single second of it. I just listened to it about 10 minutes ago and loved every single second of it even harder.
The album starts out with a powerful track "One Step Beyond", that's 2:18 of pure two-tone skanking music. It's one of the few total instrumental tracks that I really really like. Madness produces another complete track like that later on in the album (which is better than One Step Beyond), entitled "Swan Lake".
Every tune is as melodic, catchy, and unnecessarily goofy as the last one. "'Goofy'? Is that bad?" you might be saying. Nope. Madness keeps ska simple and pleasurable, every song on this entire album keeps it fun and pleasurable to listen to, just what they interperated ska to be.
There is no doubt in my mind, that this is one of the greatest (probably the second or third greatest, with The Specials leading) album made for two-tone fans. And it's definitely one of my favorite albums of all time.

"One Step Beyond" is Jackie's Best Recording.......2001-09-24
I admire this album for its beautifully written compositions, fresh and daring solos, and the amazing chemistry among the musicians. It is very rare for all these qualities to be displayed on one album. That is why "One Step Beyond" is the best Jackie Mclean album and one of the best Jazz Album's of all time.

Chris Ward should STILL be making records.......2006-05-25
Beside the fact that Chris Ward is outrageously handsome, he's got a voice that will transport you! I have "One Step Beyond," Pretty much worn the grooves out of the CD and a special CD he made for a fundraiser I attended. He's a humanitarian, an absolute professional performer and the words to his songs, like so many country songs, hit you right where it counts...in the heart!
"Fall Reaching" is one of the most poignant country songs I've ever heard. I recommend this album to anyone who wants a country album that your friends will keep asking..."Who IS that guy with the gorgeous voice?!?"
Its like listening to babies getting tossed out of cars onto motorways........2005-12-02
I have been listening to music for almost 3 months now, and this is by far the worst music I have ever come across. I mean really. He shouldn't be called Chris Ward. He should be called Piss Bored. Cos this music is boring. Country music is all the same. Why do they all whine in the same voice?
And another thing. Whats with his hat. Is he allergic to sunlight? Probably not, but he is allergic to good music taste.
I played this CD in an old folks home and 62% of the patrons died while it was on. Now, I can't be sure if this was the music's fault but I'm pretty sure it is.
One Step Beyond is a title reserved for ska music. This album makes me wonder why I ever started listening to things in the first place.

a step into the past.......2005-09-30
I remember the ONE STEP BEYOND tv series from 1959 when I was fifteen. The main melody "WEIRD" has stayed with me throughout my life but it is only since the introduction of the internet that I have been able to purchase this music from Amazon. The only two familiar tracks on the cd are "FEAR and "WEIRD" but these two tracks alone are well worth the purchase of the disc.I have a glass(OR TWO)of wine, sit back, relax, and be taken back into the realms of the 1950's with these haunting melodies.YES, it's a great cd to have,FULL MARKS, I'm truly grateful for this product. I am of course referring to the original HARRY LUBIN music. Cheers, JOHN MATHER, lancashire. Another satisfied customer.
Music From One Step Beyond by Harry Lubin.......2003-07-20
I bought this CD original soundtrack several years back and I'm writing this only in response to other reviews that fail to consider that Lubin used every piece on this CD at one time or another in the 96 episodes of "One Step Beyond." Could he have included "scarier" music throughout this collection? Definitely! There is a very creepy piece of music written for "The Room Upstairs," aired March 21, 1961; and for the episode, "Bloodflower," which aired May 16, 1961, when its central character played by actor Larry Gates, is in the cemetery. A very very creepy piece of music. And there is a wonderfully creepy piece in the episode, "Justice," aired March 7th, 1961. One of my all-time favorite pieces of tv film music, which when I heard it as a boy of eleven, it just gave me the shivers. But though these scary pieces of music were left off, we have to remember the original LP was issued in 1960, well before these episodes aired. There are "straight" compositions, such as "Byegone Memories," from the episode, "The Return of Mitchell Campion," aired April 7, 1959, which are very special and made sense when listened to "in the dramatic context of the episode" itself. But one can listen to some of the music left off this LP and the CD reissue, thanks to a new series of DVDs due out this month (July, 2003), and which can be viewed at DVD Planet by entering "One Step Beyond" in their search engine. Paramount bought the rights to the old series several years back, reports World Vision. So maybe one day we will have an addition CD collection of music left off the recording, "Music From One Step Beyond"? Perhaps they will call that CD, "More Music From One Step Beyond"? That would be great. Some of the music from "One Step Beyond," like the piece used in "Justice," was later used in episodes of "The Outer Limits," though the theme for "Outer Limits," which Lubin composed for the second season, was not used in episodes of "One Step Beyond," but was composed for "The Outer Limits," despite the claims of some reviewers who evidently can hear. We should be very thankful for Taragon for preserving what they have of that wonderful music, albeit some of it is not scary; it is nevertheless striking and important.
Just plain beautiful music!.......2001-10-14
With Alcoa Presents (One Step Beyond) barely a fading memory, I am very thankful that Harry Lubin's beautiful music lives on with this CD. Ranging from the haunting "Fear", through the delightful "Trip to the Far East," each melody brings back wonderful memories. It is difficult to believe that these compositions were written only to accompany a TV drama - on a weekly basis! Harry Lubin has faded from our scene as well but though we lost a great talent (composer, conductor, and arranger) his beautiful melodies can be played again and again.
One More Step Beyond?.......1999-12-04
I recently purchased this CD along with the new 40th anniversary Twilight Zone 4 CD box. While the opening "Fear" and "Weird" are truly creepy pieces, I kind of felt like the rest was just 50s TV stuff and not all that "Beyond." It's really not much compared to the new excellent TZ CD. Obviously this is a straight reissue of an old early 60s album. It would be cooler if they included more of a description of the conditions and inspiration that composer Harry Lubin worked under, and definately more scary pieces would be appreciated. It's still pretty neat on the whole, though, and if you're a old time SF fan or classic TV fan this probably belongs in your collection.

Album Description
Dungeon were formed in 1989 in the desert outback of Broken Hill, Australia by vocalist and guitarist "Lord" Tim, whom folk have dubbed "The Kai Hansen of the Oz metal scene". After several releases, tours of both Australia and Japan and a revolving door of band members, Lord Tim has settled in with Stu Marshall (guitar) and new band members Pete Peric (bass) and Grahame Goode (drums). Having been influenced by a wide range of bands such as Helloween, Dokken, Slayer, Judas Priest, Soilwork and Blind Guardian, it is no surprise that they have learned to combine their melodic guitar and song lines with heaps of killer riffs and doublebass attacks. With the new album, One Step Beyond, Dungeon have opened a new chapter of their successful career and set forth to conquer Europe. Once again the lovely twin guitar harmonies are coupled with the unique voice of Lord Tim and the clever arrangements make the entire affair a power metal odyssey, not lacking the essential toughness thanks due to the barrage of hammering riffs and superb production.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent power metal !!!!.......2006-03-17
This album is packed with great musicianship, the guitar riffs are extremely well played as Lord Tim voice matches great with the rhythm section. Dungeon plays power metal with a little influence of the 80's metal by the likes of Iron Maiden, Primal Fear, Iced Earth and many others. My favorite of the album is "One Step Beyond". Give this a chance!!!
SHOCK........5 Star Album.......2005-09-05
This album is a shock because alot of power metal bands suck. What I like about Dungeon is that they don't have the happy sounding keyboards.
The Power Within is a great fast song,I don't like the chorus though.
Tarrano Del Mar is such a great song,it's a slow song, Lord Tim's(vocals, guitar, keyboards) voice is awesome(really good),in this song he sounds like the Omen singer and then during the middle of the song when he does the scream he sounds a bit like Michael Kiske. This is the longest song on the album running aprox.8:17.
One Step Beyond is fast, some thrash.
Against The Wind I really don't like that song,it's more of a mellow song.
The Art Of War is one of the best songs on the album(very powerful),the vocals are awesome of course through out the album.
The Hunger is a ballad(I don't like it), that's why I gave this album a four star is because of that song and Against The Wind.
Surface Tension is another great fast song.
Under The Cross is my favorite song on the album.
Epilogue is an outro.
Dungeon is power speed metal, they do not have the crapy happy sounding keyboards, as a matter of fact there isn't much use of the keyboards in this album.
The solo's are amazing(shredders). Lord Tim is the only one who looks like a headbanger in this band.
If your like I am and you don't really like power metal, check Dungeon out,you may just like it.
Heart and soul is poured into this music........2005-08-26
These guys have a deep passion for true metal. Lord Tim presents himself in a very friendly out going type of man and his deep rooted love of metal is apparent in every song. Sometimes like a thrasier version of old school helloween. Every song has the solos the riffs the drumming , vocals, I mean everything. Tack 2 is their own take on a pirate song which would fit in nice with and running wild album. Support these guys, they deserve it all the way. Great riffs in every song. Track 2 had 140 vocal tracks recorded for it alone. Mix Helloween, Blind Guardian, and Running Wild and this is Dungeon. True Metal warriors only need apply. Also check out, Cryonic Temple, Wizard, Edguy and Brainstorm.
dungeon is the appitamy of a DECENT power metal band.......2005-03-24
well lets see this band comes from australia, WOW i didnt even know that australia had anyone in the power metal scene. this album is a decent entry to my collection of power metal, thundering drums, killer riffs, soaring vocals what more can a metalhead like myself ask for.....in addition i give this cd 4/5 stars a really good effort from one of my new favorite bands, and there even from australia! \m/

Seasoning's better then the food.......2006-08-10
2 1/2
Apparently the worst of this band's brief classic rock haze, the dated material, often impressive in only technical aspects of minor increments where the majority of the non balls up rockers are concerned, stagnates with a lack of direction in songwriting aided by misguided vocals. Still, if appreciated in small sections, with regards to date of release, there are often enough impressive fills, licks, whatnot to gaze at while the overall song may be going nowhere, or in a generically rock-a-blue's (albeit with a nice bite) way.
Freaks are for kids, not for silly rabitts........2005-11-24
This was the last album by the Chocolate Watchband. It doesn't really sound anything like their previous records. Lead singer (and Mick Jagger soundalike) Dave Aguilar had left the band, and the group abandoned their garage rock sound for a "heavier" sound. Their short (7 songs) final album was decent, but not nearly as good as their previous stuff. The fact that only one song off of this album was included on their "greatest hits" CD says a lot. The best songs are probably "Uncle Morris" and "Devil's Motorcycle". The CD adds four bonus tracks, from the group's "classic" period. There are two great songs from the movie Riot on Sunset Strip. And there are both side of the rare single the group released under the name "The Hogs". "Blue's Theme" is a cover of the instrumental hit by Davie Allan and the Arrows, and "Loose Lip Sync Ship" is a bizarre Zappa-esque throwaway (which some people mistakenly assumed was actually produced by Frank Zappa). This is the weakest of the three Watchband albums, but the bonus tracks here definitely improve it.
Chocolate Watchband - 'One Step Beyond' (Sundazed).......2005-07-31
Originally released in 1969 as the band's third and final effort.Missing is vocalist David Aguiler, not exactly sure as to who's the singer on 'One Step...',but it's a decent album. Not as good as 'Inner Mystique'(see my review)but okay. Some of the better tracks here are "Uncle Morris",your standard garage rocker "How Ya Been",the Humble Pie penned "I Don't Need No Doctor","And She's Lonely" and "Don't Need Your Lovin'".Remember, they ALL can't be classics.
Last act of a desparate band? You Decide.......2004-07-13
This album was a throw together as the band's lead singer David Aguliar left after "The Inner Mystique". The band's producer Ed Cobb had enough too, and so with guitarist Mark Loomis taking on the lead vocals this is what it produced. It's showing that the group is leaving the roots of the blues, and psychedelia behind, and going into more hard rock ala Steppenwolf. Songs like "Fireface", and "Devil's Motorcycle" are evident that the group is going for a harder sound, and other songs like "Flowers" show that psychedelia hasn't been ruled out, but it's also branching into a folk, and country rock sound, and then "I Don't Need No Doctor" shows that they want thier psychedelic sound more tougher. "Sitting There Standing" I thought was done like in thier early days, but here it is on album #3, and "Loose Lips Synch Ships" sounds like circa 1966, so what's the story here? Well this was about as unorganized as "The White Album" according to the critics. I feel that it was a pretty well effort put together, but unfortunatly this was the last we would hear from the group until 2000. I may actually buy this as it's still a creative force forged in a time where there was chaos.
