Great CD From Nightwish.......2007-02-25

First of all, Oceanborn is a huge step when thinking about Nightwish's debut album Angels Fall First. All the elements of folk music and ambience are forgotten, and instead Nightwish have concentrated to using Tarja Turunen's wide voice and playing pure heavy metal. Or, well, another describing term could be opera metal. Drama and a variety of melodies are used effects, but overruling all the expectations, Nightwish have used them very well. Songs are catchy, but they have a long lifetime. Also, the whole band does great work: even though they seem like another Dream Theater-wannabe band, Holopainen and Vuorinen use their instruments with patience and don't slope into unneeded tricking. So everything seem to be alright, but the album as a whole lacks a little bit of diversity, and sometimes falls into repeating itself. The songs are, however, very strong, and the album as a whole works great. Oceanborn is, so far, the most successful album of Nightwish.

Operatic power metal at its best!.......2006-11-23

Mind-blowing is the word I feel best describes this album. After the abomination that was Angels Fall First, who would have thought Nightwish's second album could be this masterpiece? The opening track, Stargazers, shows off Tarja's voice terrifically, as does Gethsemane. Devil & the Deep Dark Ocean is the darkest, most theatrical track, and Sacrament of Wilderness evokes images of snowcapped peaks and deep pine forests. Passion and the Opera through The Riddler are all good songs, but not as interesting as the rest of the album. The Pharaoh Sails to Orion is a haunting Egyptian tune of cobras and shifting sands, as well as the story of Exodus. Walking in the Air, a Howard Blake cover, and Sleeping Sun are calming ballads with enchanting vocals. The best thing about this album overall is the atmosphere throughout. The cover art absolutely captures the feelings it evokes. Rock on!

Nightwish Rocks.......2006-10-24

I was never really a fan of metal, I always thought that it sounded like a howler monkey being recorded with a traffic accident in the background. That said, I really like the sound of a well played electric guitar. Nightwish perfectly combines that electric sound with Tarja's absolutely incredible voice. You really have the sense that you are in the presence of an annointed singer, sent to perform for only you. This album isn't Nightwish's best, but it is worth every penny you pay for it.

More Great Nightwish!.......2006-09-06

My intro to nightwish was the Once album. I was blown away and wanted to hear more from them so I bought Oceanborn and Wishmaster. From what I heard and read these 3 albums are their best. I am not disappointed in the least. All 3 of these albums are definitely worth buying if you like the operatic metal style. Tarja Turunen's voice soars. Thank you Nightwish, for making some kick a** beautiful music!

Speed metal meets Opera....amazing...Tarja's voice is beautiful...this entire album is gorgeous...and this is not [WEEK] music either...it's quite heavy! "Devil & the Deep Dark Ocean" is what got me hooked to these Finlandish masters of Gothic powermetal. Beautiful and unforgetful! Any music fan will love it!

There's really no other way to describe this album. Everything is just perfect. The best album I've bought in very long time! Tarja's voice is amazing. The best songs are 'The Pharaoh Sails To Orion', 'Gethsemane' and 'Sacrament Of Wilderness'. Truly amazing, and definetly worth it! For anyone who likes Gothic Metal/Melodic Power Metal!

Massive.......2000-06-12

Nightwish defies all that is customary of neo-gothic rock. Combining heavy riffs and hollow sounds of female operatic vocals, makes for the best in gothic/heavy metal. Anyone who follows the goth/metal scene will appreciate, if not love, Nightwish. Blessed be.

The best power metal album since the Maiden glory days.......2000-05-13

Well, this finnish group has worked it's ass off. Believe me, I know. The idea itself - combining heavy metal and female opera vocals is genious. Hope they'll succeed in the future. oh, and the album ain't too bad, either.

Power Metal meets the Opera. First, the vocalist is a female opera singer - if you've heard Therion's Vovin or Crowning of Atlantis, then you're familiar with how cool metal is with a female opera singer. Next, the keyboards are reminiscent of Stratovarius, using the same harpsichord sound much of the time. Next, there's a lot of double bass and heavy riffing, but there are also some quieter songs that are exceptional as well.

Just discovered this band a few weeks ago when my brother played his copy of Oceanborn at me. I had never heard anything like it - operatic vocals with power metal, plus well-written, complex lyrics! I cannot recommend this album strongly enough ... words can't do it justice; just get your hands on a copy and *listen*.

One of the best and most original CD's i've ever owned..........2000-03-10

This CD is remarkable. Like a combination of metal and opera with a hint of classical. Not only do they have a talented singer and an original idea, but they have variety as well. Some bands have an original idea but thier songs all sound the same. Nightwish's songs are remarkable, without the tendancy of some bands to settle into a rut. They experiment with many types of music, and the outcome is outstanding. Please dont think it is anything like Metallica's S&M album, as one of my friends did. Metallica doesn't have near the talent or originality of Nightwish. What can I say, it's one of my favorite albums of all time.

This is just my opinion, so don't come and whine about my review if you've bought the CD and don't like it (although I don't see how that's possible). I was first introduced to Nightwish sometime last year by my Belgian friend and since then, I've been madly in love with their music. I'm not sure how Britney Spears came into one of the other reviews; it would certainly be an insult to try and compare such an amateur (BS) with Tarja, who, in my opinion, is a goddess ;) I love every single track, from the powerful Sacrament of Wilderness and Gethsemane, to the intensely beautiful Swanheart. Each song (except the instrumental track, Moondance) is lyrical perfection. Obviously I don't know much about the technical side of music, but I know enough to know that this is one of my fav CDs and quite possibly one of the best ever.

The first album was original, brilliant, etc .. this ones even better. Can't wait for more.

Album Description

An extremely experimental and strong offering, as the band's improvement from its first disc is commendable. There are images of Stratovarius, Balance of Power, and Kamelot, all the while being firmly planted in the Power Metal realm (via Nightwish's thick and clear distortion). The female vocals mix well with the band's unique delivery, and the music becomes downright enchanting in places.The metallic and chunky "Gethsemane" makes excellent use of both piano and symphony sounds, while the riff-stutter drive of "Sacrament of Wilderness" is more straight-forward. The driving "The Riddler" is a top spot, and "The Pharoah Sails to Orion" is lavish and somewhat wicked. Other good cuts include "Stargazers," the mixed male/female story told within "Devil & the Deep Dark Ocean," and the rollicking instrumental "Moondance". Spinefarm.
