EXcellent Package.......2007-08-02
I usually don't pay this much for CDs but based on how unique an item I thought it was worth it. I have to say once I got it and saw for myself I am more then satisfied. The overall package is excellent and it all fits nicely in the case of really good quality you just don't see stuff like this in the states. You get the original songs and the DVD with the openings, which is great I was able to get the modified songs off the DVD to enjoy on my ipod along with the full versions so I can have a complete BLEACH play list very good deal.
this soundtrack is amazing!!!.......2007-07-25
I love this cd! It contains all the opening and ending themes from the anime, also it has a dvd of all the opening and ending videos plus a few pictures from it as well. My only complaint is that most american dvd players won't be able to play the dvd due to it being Japanese, but otherwise I absoulutly love the music and if you like any of the opening or ending themes to the show then this is the cd for you.
I wish I could give it 10 stars!.......2007-04-30
I bought Bleach the Best for the CD alone. The CD is wonderful!!!! My children and I love the songs and have a great time. In the car or doing dishes at home, this CD has music that gets you pumped to watch the series! The CD songs are the openings and closings for the show and it is great to hear them in their true form. The CD set I purchased from Amazon came with the DVD for Region 2 or for Japanese DVD players, pin-ups of the captians and Renji along with a booklet with the lyrics of the songs in Japanese. As far as I am concerned, it is worth every penny!
Best Anime CD in awhile.......2007-04-19
I love this CD! I watched the first 118 episodes of the show and grew to LOVE the theme songs. I wanted them so bad but Amazon has too high a price for this cd, so I bought it used from one of the sellers. I got the cd in perfect condition for half the listed price for a new one, and just wanted to comment on one of the previous feedbacks about the DVD issues.
First off, this listing is for the CD ONLY, at least for the used copies. There is another listing with the CD/DVD combo here on Amazon. So if you want the DVD as well, make sure to look at both listings carefully or you will pay the same price and only get half of the packege, unless you buy used.
But I do say that the price is worth it to fans of the show who are farther along then the english dubbed episodes, because many of the theme songs are from later episodes. Hope this helps anyone interested in the CD.
Greatest CD ever!.......2007-04-05
I love this CD so much. It's all I listen to right now. I play it in the car on the way to work and then put it into my computer and listen to it alla day at work. The artwork on the cover is very cool too. Well worth the price!

Great compilation - and that's just the first half........2005-09-14
I first got this on cassette in the summer of '94 and listened to it every day, drawn by its thematic range and compositional depth. And that was just side-one.
Elfman pioneered the sound that drives today's movie adaptations of comic-books and darker-themed children's stories. Side-One kicks things off with a rollicking, hyper-cartoonish theme from the first Pee-Wee movie - the one where Pee-Wee searches for his beloved bike. Elfman's theme contains layers of different rides - on tightropes, highways, in the middle of a NASCAR rally - which rudely yet melodically crash into each other.
The Batman entry actually contains several pieces - the opening credits, the extended sequence in the cathedral and the climax - which show Batman's darkened extreme at its "Frank Miller" best. (Dir. Tim Burton couldn't sustain the mood in the next sequel, and the franchise took a turn towards the camp of the TV series with the next 2 movies.)
The theme for "Dick Tracy" is perhaps the most romantic on this disc, a quality that surpasses the theme's comic-book origins, but ends on an ironic note that's pure Elfman.
"Beetlejuice" (opening & closing credits) gives Elfman's childish ID a chance to stretch its legs, or in this case, slam-dance.
"Nightbreed" is an enigma wrapped in a dark mystery, and that's just Elfman's score. Elfman's work on this movie is as good as the movie wasn't, having a more powerful narrative than the script - easily the best track on the entire disc, one likely to exceed the movie in its dose of chills.
"Darkman" doesn't quite rise to the occasion, though the score may be hobbled by the movie itself, which seldom surpassed one of the many "Batman" clones of the early 1990's. "Darkman" (the movie, I mean) excelled as a parody of many comicbook staples (the wronged hero, the relentless villain, the scientific breakthrough with just one flaw), but not enough to escape being largely anonymous. Within those constraints, it's still a moving if scary piece.
When is Elfman not like Elfman? When he was in the mid-late `80's and scored "Back to School" (A Rodney Dangerfield vehicle) and "Midnight Run". Horns in "School" bring it closer to Elfman's over-the-top style, while "Run" sounds like a love-theme for the run-down, out-of-the-way parts of America that seldom appear in Elfman-movies. "Run" is a fun score for a fun movie - it's nothing like Elfman's previous work but it perfectly captures the on-the-road-without-a-map craziness of the movie.
To this day, I don't know why I never ventured to Side-two, but it's irrelevant. Even half this disc is worth it
The best of Elfman!!!.......2005-09-05
I was obsessed about getting this CD right from when I heard about it. I found it at the library and was so excited about it, and it didn't let me down. In fact, it was a lot better than I expected. It's a fun and creepy (strange mix, but it really works!) collection of Danny Elfman's film and television soundtracks. The first track, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, is probably my favorite. Also, I really like Batman and Wisdom. Batman is creepy and dark, and Wisdom is just weird, in the best possible way.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes film music, or everyone who is even the tiniest bit an Elfman fan. It's amazing!
Great Collection, A LIttle Too Eclectic.......2003-08-19
You should be able to tell from the movies and TV shows listed here whether or not you'd be interested in this collection. It's a little too eclectic for my tastes (hence only 4 stars) but better than volume 2. I think thatthe miscellaneous collected ites here along with the previously unreleased stuff should make this worth buying. Especially if you're a fan of Elfman's movie soundtrack work.
What Great Music.......2003-05-11
I fell in love with the music of Danny Elfman when Beetlejuice came out. There was something different about the music that he made. When Edward Scissorhands, and then Nightmare Before Christmas - I knew this man was a musical master. Its the verbal form of surrealism.
super.......2003-04-17
What a great CD. Danny's music is so original and inventive. this CD contains his pre 90's quirky, gothic music. it's all very well written and beautifully orchestrated. batman and darkman contain some really excellent long, dark, gothic cues that really take u away from reality. in my opinion no one, apart from howard shore, is as inventive and original as danny in the world of filmmusic. he far surpasses the repetitive works of williams or horner. buy this, and volume two, and keep supporting one of the greatest film composers of all time.ohh...and buy fellowship of the ring and two towers by howard shore....amazing work!

Album Description
%@#$!!? Brace yourself, super group Fantomas is back with a vengeance on their fourth album SUSPENDED ANIMATION. Unlike the epic DELIRIUM CORDIA, SUSPENDED ANIMATION likens itself with Fantomas' first record (self titled) punctuated with cartoon escapades.
The first edition (Limited to 25,000) is a spiral bound 30 page eye popping package illustrated by world famous Japanese painter Yoshitomo Nara. The theme is a calendar, the month of April, the tracks appropriately named the days of the week.

I think in YOU respect a good musician, you new to buy this one, incredible wild experimental fusion metal, I download it from a share music page, but they always recomend to buy it if you want it, I BUY IT.
If do you expect regular radio pop music, why you still reading at it.

10/21/06: "Suspended Animation Review" day.......2006-10-22
Mike Patton has proven himself to be one of the most prolific and unpredictable musicians in show business in his post Faith No More/Mr. Bungle career. Although I don't even begin to attempt to collect everything he puts out I do like to take a listen to what he's up to now and then.
SUSPENDED ANIMATION is packed with hundreds of ideas, of varying degrees of success. Some "days" have better moments than others, like the spooky intro for "04/11/05 Monday" that sounds like a room full of gurgling ghosts, or "04/27/05 Wednesday" 's sleigh-ride in outer space. Most of the other intriguing moments on this CD involve some manipulation of found sounds or electronic toys.
Patton's former band, Mr. Bungle, was also a band renowned for it's musical spontaneity, but whereas Bungle's songs worked through it's own inner logic and fluidness, making it easier to digest, the disparate elements of SUSPENDED ANIMATION doesn't hang together nearly as well as the best of Bungle work. It's progression is more akin to rapid-fire channel-surfing than an epic motion picture.
Despite the low rating I'm assigning this release, I must admit that I'm not sorry I bought it. I rarely reach for this CD to play, and when I do it's just to seek out a handful of random tracks, just enough to satisfy a need to hear something wild and chaotic. Perhaps the calendar concept of the song titles was meant to be followed literally, to listen to one track each day. Compressing an entire "month" in 43 minutes is too demanding a listening experience.
Baby please.........2006-07-13
The technique of cutting and pasting strange sounds and bizarre segments into songs was used by Frank Zappa already during the 70's. But Fantomas succeds better at making listenable music out of it, and they add their own unique sound to it, much thanks to Mike Pattons vocals.
But I agree that a full disc of it (or at least 40 minutes) becomes a little bit annoying after a while. I found that the songs worked a lot better when I made a compilation tape, mixing the songs with other Patton related work, such as "Director's Cut" and Mr.Bungle.
"Suspended Animation" was the album that got me into Fantomas and Mr.Bungle. I was surprised to find out that Mike Patton once was the singer of Faith No More, a band I really tried to like many years ago, but that I found very boring and uninspiring. He has come a long way.
Awesome mind blowing!.......2006-06-13
I wouldn't expect anything less from Mike Patton and Co. A piece of art crafted from cartoon insanity. Their sound is like a kid making a "Mystery Pie" in the kitchen a mixture of cookie dough, paprika, OJ, Milk and Cap n' Crunch mixed in a pie tin and burned in the oven. Ingredients that don't mix. Some gag on the concotion others see the brillance of developing artist. I see the latter. I was left speechless after a listen to it. I love the damn thing! Not everybody's cup of tea and thats too bad.
CARTOON MADNESS!!.......2006-06-08
1. The entire record is metal and cartoon music/effects thrown together and spit at your bleeding ears.
2. Because of that some tunes are certainly better than others but the album as a whole is rad.
3. Perfet driving music when you're getting irritable with traffic.
4. Also good when whiskey is involved.
- a lot of whiskey.
5. Honestly only good if you are into crazy music.
6. ALthough not my favorite Fantomas (director's cut is still the best) it seriously just kills the first one and delerium cordia..
7. And no it doesn't sound anything like Mr. bungle sorry..

masterpiece, but..... .......2007-07-12
If you want to buy the right master, the japonese édition is the good one: this CD has the good master tapes. I bought the too version, the american is a disaster, this FM sound with a kind of reverb..., but the japonise import is the good one, like the vinyl quality. So listen to the best solo album from Jon Anderson, this is a truely masterpiece.
Excuse-me for the mistakes of langage, I am french!!!
Hope this will help you for the choice!
THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CD.......2007-07-10
Very good cd, a little bright though. Even though "The Spell" is from a demo cassette it has resaonably good sound considering. Atlantic should have let Jon finish The Spell for the original record.
All the nay sayers here must have something wrong with their cd players.
Amazon needs to pull this off the shelf immediately.......2007-05-11
Originally this was a great sounding LP and I loved the Sancious-influenced Jon Anderson music. The fact is, there is tremendous musical talent on this album and they were recorded in the studio with high production values. This SHOULD sound incredible! It doesn't, just as everybody has said. Releasing a digitized vinyl version can do in a pinch (and unbelieveably the Russians do better work than this), so I didn't mind getting the iTunes download recently just for simplicity's sake. However, they have now found the original analog master tapes and every effort to put THAT out should be made and the record company should be replacing the poor quality, first issue CD. I'll say it again, they have found the original analog master tapes and every effort to put THAT out should be made and the record company should be replacing the poor quality, first issue CD. Where's the address? They won't answer my emails. It's a money grab. Do the right thing, Voiceprint. Release the real version. And pull this off the shelves immediately.
Again, they have now found the original analog master tapes and every effort to put THAT out should be made.
One Star for the "bait & switch".
early Jon..........2007-03-28
I remember buying this on vinyl, expecting another "Olias of Sunhillow". I also recall being initially disappointed. Now I know better. With all the great diverse product that Jon has released over the years since this, I had to pick it up for another listen. Fantastic songs! Jon doing some experimenting, musically, and doing it very well. The two bonus tracks are awesome. If I have any problem with this release, it's in the production. Not much in the way of low-end sound. The whole c.d. seems a bit 'tinny'. I had hoped that the remaster would have done something about that, but apparently not. Still, if you like what Jon has been doing, and love his lyrical spirituality, then by all means, pick this up. It's well worth it.
Best album next to Olias.......2007-03-10
I am Glad this is finally on cd ,and I think it sounds great.

Customer Reviews:
A Fabulous Introduction to Igor Stravinsky!!.......2004-05-19
Sony Music's "The Essential Igor Stravinsky" truly lives up to its title. This double-CD set includes nearly every important piece of work (either in part or in whole) by the great Russian composer. The set also presents the pieces in chronological order beginning in 1908 with "Fireworks" and ending in 1966 with his final piece, the short but simple "Owl and The Pussycat". In between, there are excerpts from Stravinsky's most famous works including the first part of "The Rite Of Spring" and highlights from the "Firebird" and "Petrushka" ballets. There are also lesser-known works included as well as his harmonically rearranged version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" (a rendition which caused a stir in the early 1940's). The entire collection concludes with a rare recorded interview with Igor Stravinsky himself in which he remembers the infamous premere of "The Rite Of Spring".
The CD booklet includes detailed liner notes as well as a written tribute by Trey Anastasio of the band Phish. The sound quality of the recordings is amazing (even on the historic 1934 recording of "Piano Rag Music"). All in all, this an excellent collection of works by the great Igor Stravinsky. In a sense, this compilation gives the composer the 'rock musician' treatment. It's a 'greatest hits' album and a career-spanning retrospective that serves as an ideal introduction to Igor's music. Even if your not a fan of Classical music, it isn't difficult to listen to the works of Stravinsky and not be stirred.
Definitely The Essential Igor Stravinsky!!!

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
Olivia Tremor Control can't decide whether they want to be experimental-noise progenitors or avant-garde psychedelic pop stars. That schism makes Black Foliage alternately wondrous, challenging, and frustrating, with moments of pure brilliance patched together with overworked, overedited passages of indulgence. But frustrating doesn't mean bad. It's just not easy listening, and OTC like it that way. --Tod Nelson
Amazon.com
Black Foliage: Animation Music by the Olivia Tremor Control is a triumph of an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink production, and by track 14 even the sink is fair game. Like 1996's Dusk at Cubist Castle: Music from the Unrealized Film, Black Foliage merges Beatles-esque melodies, lyrics, and quirky instrumentation, such as odd bleats of trumpet, crazy xylophone tinkling, toy pianos, and anything else within arm's reach. Stretching this sort of trip-out to more than an hour is a bit much--hell, even the Beatles only tried to do that once--but if broken up into smaller bites, Black Foliage has its rewards. On the ether-dizzy "Paranormal Echoes" OTC manages to play with all of their toys at once and yet keep them in line to produce a mind-numbingly beautiful and strange composition. The whole shebang is tied together with aurally disorienting interludes, occasionally disrupting the flow but never for long. In other words: happy songs, crazy arrangements, terrific fun. --Jason Josephes

In the Blink of an Eye You Get Several Meanings.......2006-05-03
Music expands your mind. It floats you in a sea of new consciousness. It opens your heart. It cleanses your mind. It shows you a new way to be. It transports you to some 1969 that never existed. It delivers bliss. And "in the blink of an eye you get several meanings."
This is what psychedelic means. And this is what Black Foliage does.
Will Hart (the key creative force behind the Olivia Tremor Control) said in an interview that Black Foliage would only reveal itself to you after fifty listens. He might have been right. Years after my first exposure to it, Black Foliage still delivers something new, something unexpected.
The closest I can come to a description of OTC's music is to toss you a tangle of words: noise, pop, baroque, pet sounds, dense, ambient, light, experimental, psychedelic, singing saw, inspired, transformation. For comparison, here is a jumble of artists: Beatles, Brian Eno, Sunshine Fix, Dungen, Animal Collective, Zombies, Apples in Stereo, All Night Radio, Circulatory System, Caribou (Manitoba).
Black Foliage is what you might have gotten if John Lennon, Brian Eno, and Pet-Sounds Brian Wilson had collaborated on Abbey Road. It works because of it contradictions. You don't expect the depth and the dense layering to be delivered in the guise of psychedelic pop.
Finally, a plea: OTC, I saw that you played a festival and some clubs last year. After Will gets the new Circulatory System work done this fall (it will be fall?), please consider getting back together. Frankly, you are not as good apart as you are together.
Daring, Poppy, And Wonderful.......2005-04-18
No one experimented with found-sounds better than the Olivia Tremor Control, and Hart and Doss and co. turn "Black Foliage" into a 75-minute rollercoaster of droning ambience, clunking instrumentation, and top-shelf melody and harmony. If one were to simply cull the great pop songs from "Black Foliage" ("California Demise 3," "I Have Been Floated," "Hideaway"), you would have a pop album better than almost anything released during the 90s--yet when these gems are sandwiched between spacey interludes, far out experiments, they become something even more special, like shimmering golden threats within a beautiful tapestry. The OTC wrote better melodies, took more risks, and made better albums than almost anyone since. Forget Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" or Radiohead's "Kid A"--this album beats both of those subsequent two on their own terms, blending stellar songwriting with abstract ambition, yet never devolving into cliches or boring exercises. Buy.
I bought this album for $6.......2005-02-09
I bought this album used for $6 in the middle of my Neutral Milk Hotel craze, no - obsession, thinking it might be cool. Turns out to become one of my favorite albums...period.
"Black Foliage" is a harpsichord canvas.......2004-12-03
Hardly anybody does psychedelic space-rock the way the Olivia Tremor Control do -- and their second album "Black Foliage: Animation Music" is no exception. It sounds like the soundtrack to an acid party on Mars, with their elaborate tapestry of electronica, tape tinkering, and jazzy psychedelic pop. It's one of those rare albums that cannot be compared to anything else, only to itself.
It opens with.... well, "Opener," a wavery 25-second intro that slips into the sputtering Beatles-esque "A Peculiar Noise Called "Train Director" and the sweeping sweet grandeur of "Hideaway." Other songs strike different notes: "A Sleepy Company" sounds like a brass band getting drunk, while "I Have Been Floated" is a solemn little pop song with ghostly sound effects. "Another Set Of Bees In The Museum" is a fun little song that is blurred over by fuzz.
But the Olivia Tremor Control doesn't stick strictly to their own brand of psychedelic pop. They also dabble in experimental songs, such as brief interludes all called "Combinations," which appear to be tapes being messed around with -- the results are odd computerized vocals and random blips. "Black Foliage Animation 1" is a solid little tune that descends into bubbling, computerized chaos, and then gives up to the chaos completely. And the climax is "The Bark and Below It," an eleven-and-a-half-minute epic that starts on a soft little melody that is swamped by sonic thunder, only to reemerge among clangs, bells, electronic burps, a slurred keyboard melody, a xylophone, and what sounds like a heartbeat.
Listening to all of "Black Foliage: Animation Music" is a bit like a pleasant hallucination, especially if you listen to several of their odder songs in a row. But the best way to listen to it is straight through, without skipping any songs -- each one is a part of one huge sonic tapestry. The songs can be heard individally, but they lose some of their impact if heard alone.
The music is a bit of a dreamy head trip. Frontman William Cullen Hart takes charge of vocals, guitar and electronic twiddles. And he does quite well at all of them -- the guitar work he and his bandmates do is hugely entertaining and catchy. So are the brooding drums, theramin, and hints of bass, clarinet, melodica and violin. It's hard to pick out each instrument -- they blend together into a thick smokescreen of sound.
Hart's vocals are almost Beatlesesque -- he sounds a lot like Paul McCartney in some songs. And he's backed up by Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum and Julian Koster, as well as the Apples in Stereo's Robert Schneider, who add an extra dimension to Hart's singing. And the lyrics are hard to make out, but they have the psychedelic whimsy that characterized the first album: "We took a sideways glance and fell into the bottom of the season/we saw horizons and different paths away from here."
The Olivia Tremor Control were still going strong on their second album "Black Foliage: Animation Music." Denser and darker than "Dusk at Cubist Castle," this is an enchantingly otherworldly listen.
Audio Gold.......2004-02-13
This is a very interesting and catchy album. My complaint is that they could've played these songs a little more straight. Had they left off some of the bleeks and squeeks, and just played some of them as straight pop songs, I would've been more satisfied with the album. But I guess, that's not the direction they were going. The last song, "Hilltop Procession" is a suprising gem, especially after listening to some of the more aimless instrumentals. I will say that it is a great album for driving on the interstate, especially late at nite.

Brilliant.......2007-06-07
John Petrucci has created an amazing work here. Jaws of Life really displays his prowess and greatness. Glaskow Kiss is extremely musical and well composed/performed - VERY memorable. The third song is my favorite on the CD - extremely excellent. It reminds me of Raspberry Jam Delta V by Joe Satrianni. In fact, much of the music here seems to be influenced by Joe in some way (which to me is a good thing).
Regardless, this is an excellent piece of work - I highly recommend it!!!
INCREDIBLE.......2007-01-13
If you are a fan of Dream Theater, Satriani, Vai, this is a must-have. Awesome!
good road trip album.......2006-12-11
I don't usually dig completely instrumental music, and at first listening to this album I was like "it's just not the same without James!" but this album has grown on me. I identify the most with vocalists, but JP's guitar playing gives me the chills and even without a singer to centralize it, I still like this album. "Jaws of Life" is cool, kind of shark-like and threatening. I used to think "Glasgow Kiss" (which has that Irish kind of tempo) was corny, but now I like its positive energy and every time I'm driving around on a sunny day I'm like "quick! Put on Glasgow Kiss!" "Tunnel Vision" is another one that stands out (and it was cool going through a tunnel listening to it). The two slow songs, "Wishful Thinking" and "Lost Without You" are the ones I listen to the least; I thought they're too much like "smooth jazz" but when I did listen all the way through I heard some things I liked. "Damage Control" has a riff that was very attention getting. "Curve" reminds me a lot of "Flying In A Blue Dream", but Joe Satriani was his hero I guess. "Animate Inanimate" is the longest song, good and kind of middle-eastern sounding. OK, so this isn't Dream Theater, of course it's not going to be as great as all the members of DT together with all their talent and diversity, but JP is still pretty great. It's not as intense of a listening experience as Dream Theater, but it's a good album for when you can't concentrate as intensely. Some people have told me they like to listen to this album at work. My family liked it when we were on a road trip and I also like it for driving.
Super Guitarist under achieves.......2006-11-21
JP is a great guitarist no question, but I'm afraid it's impossible to differentiate between his writing(and playing) on this album and any of the Mike Varney sponsored 'shred' albums of the eighties.
The backing tracks are formulaic, the ballads appear as expected, the exotic scales are in place, even some 'bluesy' playing - it's as if JP is trying to emulate the instrumental albums that shaped his listening and playing - too bad he didn't listen to some Jeff Beck!
Both Joe Satch and Steve Vai are referenced heavily in JP's playing, (no bad thing, every guitar player is influenced by somebody), but he fails to take it to the next level beyond their collective shadow.
As far as I am concerned, it is unimportant if a guitar player of JP's calibre opts to play one or a thousand notes, so long as a)he has something to say and b)he says it with his own voice. JP fails to achieve this here.
In summary: JP is awesome but fallible, he's only human after all.
awesome.......2006-11-02
Being a huge fan of Joe Satriani, but not so much one of Dream Theater, I hadn't heard of John Petrucci until I heard he did the G3 tour with Joe and Steve Vai. Then I heard he cut a solo instrumental album. Well, as far as I'm concerned, anyone Satch takes on tour with him must be pretty good, so I picked up the cd without having heard a single song on it. I was completely blown away. Petrucci is incredible. What a gifted guitar player. The opener, Jaws Of Life, sets the pace nicely. Glasgow Kiss is a lot of fun and appropriately named; it definitely has a Scottish feel to it. My favorite track is Curve. Wow, does this one rip through your speakers. The solo in this one is amazing. I've tried to get into Dream Theater without any success, but maybe it will soon click for me. What I do know for certain is that Mr. Petrucci is a sensational guitarist, and I hope that this isn't the only solo effort from this amazing musician.

The Mages Did it Again.......2007-07-11
I only recently discovered the Black Mages but their infusing of Final Fantasy music and rock is just plain great. This album is no exception either. I won't go through every song in detail, but I'll talk about the most noteworthy ones.
The Rocking Grounds is a great song to start off with. When you hear it you automatically know what the Mages are about and how they play their music.
Otherworld is an odd change from the original. Usually the Mages rock up a slower FF song, but here they took a hard/scream rock song and turned it into almost pop music. It's not bad, I actually like it, but it's different for sure. I like the original better, actually, but only by a little.
Maybe I'm a Lion is just an amazing song--it's fast and loud and just plain great.
The Skies Above is... well... apparently some people don't like it and I can't tell why. I think it's really amazing. The slow piano tune for Zanarkand plays first, then jumps into rock and keeps going until the unexpected, deep, male opera voice cuts through. At first it seems strange, but when the song really picks up and he gets going it's an experience. Make sure you turn up the volume, though, or the effect is lost. It's like driving a racecar slowly--what's the point? I think this is the best song on the album.
It's a shame the CD isn't cheaper, but being an import I guess it's expected to be expensive. Still an amazing album and a great buy.
The sweeping collision of poignance and thrash........2005-12-17
As a fan of The Black Mages' debut album, I knew I wouldn't have any difficulty loving another LP if they used the exact same structure and formula as the first. Unsurprisingly, this was not the case, and The Black Mages have taken everything that made their eponymous debut special, while adding a significant number of innovations to the table.
1. The Rocking Grounds
...although you wouldn't think so from the first track. This song is very reminiscient of their previous material. Solid, but a bit unmemorable.
2. Zeromus
On the contrary, this song is excellently layered with signature Black Mages guitar sound and extra quirks that make it unique. A very recognizable tune from FFIV, interpreted excellently here.
3. Vamo' Alla Flamenco
Surprisingly yes, this is the same band, juxtaposing near-salsa music with acoustic guitar, infused with the usual hard rock, to make an extremely memorable- arguably danceable track. A highlight.
4. Hunter's Chance
This is a very quality song, dark in tone and driving in its nature. It seems to be one of the more underrated songs on the album.
5. Otherworld
When I first realised this song would be included, I wondered just how they'd pull it off. The band had proven they could reinterpret classical scores into rock anthems such as Dancing Mad, but how could they reinterpret this stunning metal piece from FFX?
The answer, of course, is that instead of "rocking it up", they toned it down. This song is much, much more melodic than its FFX counterpart, with a very competent female vocalist in KAZCO. Another highlight of the album, and very memorable, it will of course draw comparisons with the original, even though these comparisons are fairly undue. As a reviewer, I would say that both songs stand very highly on their own merits.
Now a note on the vocals on this album....there are two songs that feature them- this track, and The Skies Above, which I'll cover later. Speaking frankly, neither of the songs have vocals that the average radio listener would call "good". I note that they are unorthodox and extremely unique, standing out from the music on several levels. Your mileage may vary, but then again the "average radio listener" probably isn't even reading this review, are they?
6. Matoya's Cave
A lovely song, providing a "break" of sorts without ruining the flow of the album. Extremely impressive, and it really showcases the versatility of the band.
7. The Man With The Machine Gun
This song is instantly recognizable and highly enjoyable. One of my favourites off of the album, very-fast paced.
8. Maybe I'm A Lion
I must agree with another reviewer and say that FFVIII features some of the best music in the series, and this reinterpretation is no different. Extremely impressive.
9. Battle With The Four Fiends
An intense track, reminiscient of the work on their first album.
10. The Skies Above
This song in particular seems to draw the most fire from those I've spoken to...and I can't help but disagree. This song is the absolute highest moment of the album, and comparable with Dancing Mad in its brilliance. From the opening piano intro that brings back the stirring emotions of sadness prevalent whenever it appeared in FFX, the song suddenly leaps into intensity with a fast, driving buildup and breakdown. Out of nowhere, vocalist "mr. goo" soars above and beyond all of the instruments with his voice unlike anything I've ever heard. The song continues, with vocal melodies complimenting the ever-surging music impeccably, until the end where the song explodes and calms down to a slow anthem, followed shortly by an outro on keys, bringing the song full circle. The vocals on this track seem to be the main point of contention when it comes to "song sucks" or "song does not suck" arguments, and all I can suggest is that you listen to the song and decide on your own. If you're open-minded and the phrase "loud, accented, operatic male singer" doesn't make you cringe, then you may just end up loving this song as much as I do.
11. Blue Blast- Winning The Rainbow
I'm of the belief that this song is an original composition by the band, but there are obviously those that say otherwise. Nonetheless, it is a quality, fitting ending to a very quality album.
So an underview- this album overall flows better, sounds better, and is more unique than its predecessor, but I still highly recommend listening to their debut first. Nonetheless, if you enjoy Final Fantasy, rock music, and any combination of the two, you're sure to find a satisfying listening experience in The Skies Above.
Excellent second effort; creative arrangements.......2005-08-02
This is The Black Mages' second offering. Their sound in this collection is far more mature than their first offering. Apparently this is partly due to the fact that a great deal of the first album was pre-programmed, and most of the music on this disc was actually performed. The tracks on this disc have a wide variety of styles, more creative arrangements, and fewer gaps in consistency to detract from the listening experience. There are a few real gems on here. The guitarwork is more Satriani-like and less Van-Halen, meaning less crunch and more soaring melody. That's not to say that the crunch is gone; it's here in spades, but there's a lot more variety now. There's also a great deal of virtuosic acoustic guitar. We're not talking classical or anything, but it's pretty darn good for a rock album. Here's my track-by-track breakdown which might be a bit laborious for some, so skip it if you want.
Track 1: The Rocking Grounds (FF III)
-------------------------------------
Right off the bat, we hear a much richer, more mature rock-and-roll style from the Mages. The drums are a little less thrashing, and the music just drives. While this track isn't exactly special, it's a nice intro as to what's to come.
Track 2: Zeromus (FF IV)
------------------------
I love this track. The music just glides. Fans of FF IV (FF II in the U.S.) will recognize the main theme in the middle of the song all of a sudden. Really cool stuff. (Right at 1:08, if you're curious.) It's not the best track on the album, but it's heavily nostalgic for me.
Track 3: Vamo' Alla Flamenco (FF IX)
------------------------------------
This is probably the best track on the album, and is worth the price of the disc alone. Apparently a fan favorite in their concerts, they carry it off beautifully here and build a truly remarkable rock-and-roll piece. Great acoustic guitar inserted in the middle.
Track 4: Hunter's Chance (FF IX)
--------------------------------
This is a totally transformed version of the tune from FF IX. Quirky little tune. They've added some really Satriani-like guitar along with some video-game like synth scales that add nostalgic value to the track. They even threw in a great little piano solo in the middle. Really, everything but the kitchen sink in this tune. Good stuff.
Track 5: Otherworld (FF X)
--------------------------
What's that? Vocals??! Yup, they got a singer for this one. She's pretty good, too. Not exactly Joan Jett, but she rocks enough for this one. Not bad.
Track 6: Matoya's Cave (FF I)
-----------------------------
Very clever little rock ballad with some deceptively simple acoustic guitar. This track probably best displays their new maturity as a band, as it's no longer just heavy-metal; at one moment it's a little folk tune, then it's down and dirty blues, and just for good measure they put in a really cool section in the middle where it's just a synth that sounds like a video game. It doesn't break the flow and it adds some nostalgia. Really terrific work here. Fans of the album Celtic Moon will probably really like the light touch on this particular track.
Track 7: The Man with the Machine Gun (FF VIII)
-----------------------------------------------
I find it really interesting to listen to this one back-to-back with the version on Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec. Really, totally different take on the same subject matter. Some great guitar on this track; we're back to Van Halen territory.
Track 8: Maybe I'm a Lion (FF VIII)
-----------------------------------
More FF VIII. FF VIII probably had the best music in the series, but most of the stuff that was available before was orchestral; this takes the final battle music and makes it rock. This is probably how it was supposed to sound on the console, but it didn't work quite as well as it does now. This is probably the "hardest" rock on the disc, and it really does rock. Awesome guitar, especially towards the end.
Track 9: Battle with the Four Fiends (FF IV)
--------------------------------------------
Another quirky rock and roll piece. Nothing special here.
Track 10: The Skies Above (FF X)
--------------------------------
This COULD have been a great, anthemic track. This aims to be this album's "Dancing Mad" (see their first album for info on that track), and it works okay, but a couple things just aren't quite right: First, going from solo piano to straight-out rock just didn't work for me, and second, their choice of a singer was a bit oddball. This is a sort of heavy-metal ballad, but this guy is more of a Broadway-ish baritenor. This should have been sung by more of a rock singer with a more expressive range. He hits the notes (which are really high), but his style is totally at odds with the music around him. The track is still listenable, but I just can't help thinking what it could have been. This track is the only reason I don't give this album five stars.
Track 11: Blue Blast - Winning the Rainbow
------------------------------------------
There's some mystery surrounding this track. It appears to be Final Fantasy related, but noone seems to know where it's from. I found a reference to "Village Beach Soldier Western Team Entrance Theme Song" on one site, but I have no idea whether this is a FF reference or something else. Other folks seem to think it's an original piece by the band. Either way, it's a good tune and it fits well with the rest of the album.
Pretty Damn Good.......2005-04-10
The style they approcahed with this album
is a little more guitar heavy which is
definately a plus. Matoya's Cave if you
remember from FF1 they turned into such
a masterpiece.
The whole album is great. The only flaws
I kind of see are the strange people they
had sing for The Skies Above and Otherworld.
You'd have to listen for yourself. Get this Album!!
Incredible Sophomore Album.......2005-04-08
I bought the first album a while ago and loved almost every song. Especially the Boss Battle theme from FFVII (which to this day I still think is Nobuo's best song ever written) and was exciting to see he created a sequal album. I'm happy they put songs from IX which weren't in the first album (especially Vamo' Alla Flamenco), but am saddened that he didn't put any more of the awesome tracks from FFVII. The guitars are crunchy as hell and have incredible melody. My only beef with this album.. which was my only beef with the old album.. is the synth sound just gets so cheezy and annoying sometimes.. but it's easy to get over.

The Worst NOFX album.......2006-11-28
This is the worst NOFX album and the worst punk rock album ever. This band also has the two greatest punk albums "Punk in Drublic" and "....So long and thank you for the shoes".
It pretty much early NOFX when they were still teenagers.
raw, fast, funny, punk.......2006-02-26
Thats how punk should be... and NOFX did it in a great way. NOFX's second album is lyrically hilarious because the issues aren't dealing with politics. Mike's voice is definately not for everyone and this is way before it got great but if you are a true punk fan you should really enjoy this. The best songs are Shut Up Already, Here Comes The Neighborhood, A200 Club (hilarious song about having crabs), Mr. Jones, Vegetarion Mumbo Jumbo and the weird I Live In A Cake. It does have its weak points like towards the end it kind of sucks and the songs Freedumb and Sloppy English just aren't that good. I'd reccommend this if you have/like S&M Airlines or Ribbed.
Cool album........2006-01-12
It ain't anything great, in my opinion. It's not quite as good as 'White Trash, Two Heebs And A Bean' or 'So Long And Thanks For All The Shoes', but it's still a good CD. The lyrics can be kind of rediculous, but that's the fun of NOFX. Rediculous, bratty, funny lyrics. Anyway, I guess I'll do a song by song review.
Shut Up Already - 8/10 - At first, I hated this song with a passion. But, it slowly grew on me and now I listen to it quite alot.
Freedumb - 10/10 - Great song. It's short and simple, but I completely agree with it. It's about how stupid censorship is, and Mike's right. Kids hear 'bad words' everyday, so there's no reason to censor them.
Here Comes The Neighborhood - 7/10 - Not one of my favorites, but I like the lyrics. Kind of thrashy.
A200 Club - 8/10 - Disgustingly funny.
Sloppy English - 10/10 - One of my favorites on the album. Pure punk rock awesomeness.
You Put Your Chocolate In My Peanut Butter - 5/10 - Though it kind of bores me, it still has decent lyrics.
Mr. Jones - 10/10 - My other favorite on this album. 'Tis a bit creepy, but it's cool.
Vegetarian Mumbo Jumbo - 9/10 - Like 'Shut Up Already', it bashes vegetarians. I think it's better than SUA, though.
Beer Bong - 8/10 - Stupid, but fun.
Piece - 8/10 - Those peace punks can be quite hypocritical sometimes. Ha!
I Live in a Cake - 7/10 - Cool song. I just wish it was longer.
No Problems - 7/10 - See the above comment.
On The Rag - 8/10 - This song is pretty relatable. I like it.
Truck Stop Blues - 10/10 - My other favorite on the CD. It has an amazing guitar solo.
So, all in all, this isn't anything amazing, but if you're a fan of hardcore punk, you'll really dig this. It's worth the 10 bucks I paid for it! Oh, and if you like this, I suggest that you check out the Circle Jerks CD 'Group Sex' as well. If that CD was thrashier, then it would be like this one. Hehe.

"old NOFX".......2005-09-14
everyone says Liberal Animation sucks, so of course I avoided it but one day I was out to buy a NOFX cd and they didnt have the one I wanted so I bought this.
I don't like it as much as Ribbed or White Trash, but Liberal Animation is actually a really good album. Not every song on here is good but I love "Shut Up Already" "Freedumb" "A200 Club" "Sloppy English" "Beer Bong" "Piece" and "No Problems", the rest are good but I'm not nuts about them. OH YEAH HOW COULD I FORGET "MR JONES" is probably one of NOFX's best songs.
If you like "Pump Up The Valuum" "Heavy Petting Zoo" that stuff (which I like too...I'm ashamed to say) then you probably won't like this cd that much but it's very good for those that are into the really fast hardcore stuff
Don't listen to those who downplay this album.......2005-08-30
This is the type of album for all of us punk fans to thrash around to. The sound here is very harsh, not for pussies. The guitar work will blow you away, and Fat Mike writes the funniest lyrics! Get this if you like thrash punk with a silly twist. Actually, this may appeal to some metalheads too, so if you're into 80's metal you'll be impressed with the speed thrash and metallic riffs that show everywhere on this album.
Do not listen to those who downplay this album. This is weird but unique and in-your-face hardcore, not the pop-punk stuff they've been putting out since after this release. It may not have the best production quality, but on the other hand it is very raw and will kick your a$$. Go out and buy this if you know what's good for you.
