Customer Reviews:
An uplifting experience.......2006-12-05
If one takes into account the time at which this recording was made, and the surrounding events affecting his life, one can truly appreciate the significance of this album. Experiencing oppression not only from the U.S. but later the Canadian government to travel abroad, Robeson was impeded, but not prevented from singing in the name of peace, human rights, and the rights of the common worker. Victory was at hand when on May, 9 1958, the date of this recording, Paul Robeson announced that his passport battle had been won. This is the recording of a triumphant gentleman, a loving, ecstatic audience, and very importantly, a talented and very attuned pianist (Alan Booth). With this in mind one can more greatly appreciate how special this concert was. The magic of this recording trancends Robeson's impeccable singing. It is the concert as a whole that makes it so spectacular. Listen to 'Joe Hill', think of Robeson's battle, and hear why it is so powerful. Or listen to 'O No John', Alan Booth pounding the keys on the last notes, and the audience's response. Every person in Carnegie Hall was riveted. Well worth the price, and an uplifting experience.
One of the best, and latest, of the Robeson recordings..........2006-10-17
This concert came along in 1958, when Paul's passport was restored and he was allowed to travel and make a living again, after several years of being on the Communist blacklist. His joy at performing once more for his traditional audience comes through in every track. That same year, he did a concert at his brother's church in Harlem, and when Columbia Records issued that one, it had another winner. Not long after those shows, Paul went overseas for five years, suffering a health crisis that brought him back to America in 1963, broken down and unable to perform consistently. He spent his last decade or so of life on the sidelines, living quietly with his sister in Philadelphia. This concert, then, along with the one at Mother Zion Church, is one of the final triumphs of one of the most interesting American lives. We know now that Paul's stubborn support of the Soviet Union in the Stalin era was a tragic flaw in his character, but he had magnificent gifts of voice and of acting presence, and had he come to the attention of audiences in 1957 instead of 1927, he would likely have earned millions as a singer and actor, and his political and social radical activism would have been a much smaller impediment to his career. If you already own some Robeson recordings, add this one because it represents him at the beginning of what was then "old age." If you own none, this concluding album is actually a fine starting point, because his earlier work suffers a bit from the primitive recording technology of the '30's and '40's.
Paul Robeson Live.......2006-07-11
Of course his baritone is fabulous. His rendition of Joe Hill is unforgettable - this was a song he sang for the builders' labourers on the site of the Sydney Opera House in around 1969 -also Old Man River, which he made his own. He should have sung this in the film of the musical Showboat but he was passed over for an inferior voice by the producers because he was a member of the Communist Party. A pity. He also sings some gospel on this CD, I'm not mad about religious songs but if you like them then you'll love this.
New version available in UK.......2006-02-18
This version is now redundant as Vanguard has released a version in 2005 with the original album cover for the first time and with new sleeve notes. The sound is also better. I purchased it from amazon.co.uk.
Question.......2005-09-29
I would like to buy Paul Robeson CD with "Old Man River" and "Kevin Barry (Irish)"

Not to be over looked!.......2007-06-04
I'm surprised that no one has attempted too review this excellent recording. Now I'm not saying that everything on here is a 5 star performance. But if your like me a big fan who had about three chances to see this band and for what ever excuse that came up never got the opportunity. This will definetly help ease some of the guilt. For myself this is a very enjoyable listen. Mick Skidmore has done a fabulous job assembling a varried selection of songs done live that are done in order of what you might have seen them performed at one of those second rate club environments that Randy and the boys had to play in the later stages of their career. Not only do you here the brillance of the guitar playing of Randy California, but you also get an intimate feeling of a man that loved his music with a devotion too his art to which he refused to compromise. Some of the musical highlights for me on Disc #1 the intro to Soldier, the 13 plus min All along the Watch tower, plus an 8 and half minute version of Downer. Disc #2 In a young mans eyes a song written with his young son in mind,Holy man, Fresh garbage, and Darlin if just to mention a few of many selections. Mr. Skidmore also has assembled a nice selection of photo's along with historical facts and revalations about Randy and the band Spirit. All in all a great package that no true fan should be without. So, if you are a fan you definetly need to add this to your collection you'll be glad you did!!!!

It's said politics makes strange bedfellows. But it's got nothing on the peculiar marriage of art and history inspired by the tragic events of 9/11/01. Before that day, Daniel Rodriguez was a member of New York's finest, working as an NYPD security officer at the Manhattan South precinct. If it seemed an odd calling for a gifted, operatically trained tenor, it was employment many a journeyman artist could relate to: the proverbial "day job." As it turns out, no police academy in the world could have trained Rodriguez for the crucial role his city's darkest hour thrust upon him. While his colleagues mourned their staggering losses and toiled around the clock in rescue efforts, Rodriguez delivered renditions of "God Bless America" that rallied both his city and his country, much as Kate Smith's version of the Irving Berlin patriotic standard had done at the dawn of WWII.
Contemporary jazz great-producer Tom Scott took it from there, showcasing Rodriguez's powerful voice in this deftly arranged album focused sharply on personal and national inspiration. Taking his cue from his own hero, Mario Lanza, Rodriguez instills no small amount of drama in his performances, and it serves him well on tracks like the American folk classic "Shenandoah," a rousing take on Scarlet Pimpernel's "Into the Fire," and the relative Sinatra rarity "The House I Live In." The "God Bless America" here varies from the original single release, with Rodriguez reading the spoken intro once delivered by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Is Rodriguez the greatest tenor of modern times? No. But it's hard to imagine a talent better suited to the challenge history has thrust upon him; we're lucky--make that blessed--to have him. --Jerry McCulley

Beautiful.......2007-07-21
This cd will bring tears to your eyes. His voice is so clear and lovely. I bought this cd for my mother for her birthday in September. It is so sad that the events of September 11 had to occur for this man to be discovered.
God Bless Daniel Rodriquez.......2007-07-16
This alblum is a treasure to own and listen to. He really captures the spirit of patriotism. I have played his songs at a local fireworks show that I DJ at and his songs are up there with the other songs by artists by Mr. Lee "God Bless The U.S.A." Greenwood and other great artists. New York City and the nation needed him at a time when we were trying to recover from the worst tragedy in the history of the U.S.A. and he was there for us.
Music From and For the Heart.......2006-11-25
Daniel's album is music to be shared with family and with friends to help further ensure warmth, strong family ties, and love of our beautiful country. His voice is magical, skilled, rich and so memorable that it can take one on a journey from yesterday to promise for a bright tomorrow. This is a superb rendering of past unforgettable music. His solemn rendition of the peace song "God Bless America" is the album's centerpiece and truly unforgettable....
Daniel Rodriguez.......2006-11-11
I first heard of Daniel Rodriguez a couple of months ago when he sang on Jay Leno's show. He was/is WONDERFUL! His voice is beautiful, but he sings from the heart, and that makes him exceptional.
Some definite winners on this album.......2005-12-14
My favorites are "Ave Maria" and "The Lord's Prayer" where Daniel truly shows off his vocal talents. I could have done without the choir backup on "Ave Maria" but nonetheless a great rendition.
The ending that he has for the "The Lord's Prayer" almost brings a tear to my eye each time I hear it. Well done Daniel.

Customer Reviews:
Great live album, great performer.......2004-02-13
Excellently recorded live sound, Marti's in fine voice. Jaime Hoover(Spongetones) is a great guitar player who really helps make this a wonderful CD. Jim Brock adds interest with great percussion, and Don Dixon is, as always, right there on bass and vocals. Marti and the songs are the showcase, and this collection is a good overview of her first four albums "Unsophisticated Time", "Match Game", "Used Guitars", and "Any Kind Of Lie". If you want to hear a great, tight band performing quality songs and having fun with one of the most overlooked female voices in pop/rock, look no further.
Superb live album!.......2000-07-11
Contrary to the previous writer's view, I think this is a wonderful introduction to Marti's music. So little is currently in print that it's the only way to sample her career as a whole.
But it's much more than a filler: the album holds up extremely well by any standard. For a live album, it strikes me as amazingly clean-sounding and vivid -- no doubt partially because of the relatively small venue at Spirit Square in Charlotte.
The songs form a terrific compendium of her work from the beginning through the early 90s (five albums of original work, through "Any Kind of Lie"). There are OK songs here, of course, but there are great ones too : try "Wind in the Trees," E. Costello's "Just a Memory," "Inside These Arms," and one of the most dazzlingly romantic songs I've ever heard, "Follow You All Over the World" (penned by Bland Simpson, and sung beautifully by Marti).
The interplay with her hubby Don Dixon is fun as always, but Marti's pure, powerful voice is the main joy of all her records, and it sounds wonderful on this album.
Three words: buy this album!
Six Years Overdue.......2000-03-11
Marti Jones recording career is somewhat convoluted and worth mentioning before examining "Live At The Spirit Square." She burst on the scene in 1988 with a critically acclaimed pop album titled "Used Guitars." Two years later Jones records "Live," disappears from the music scene for another 6 years, then finally releases "Live." To make matters more confusing, "Used Guitars" is out of print. So what? Well, we now have "Live At The Sprint Square" (sort of a best of Marti Jones album) with no previous material in print. Although "Live" stands well on its own merits, a better introduction to Jones' work is "Used Guitars."
Anyway, the 19 songs on "Live" are mostly Marti Jones and Don Dixon compositions. Marti sings a lot like Jackie DeShannon, and Don Dixon favors blue eyed soul. Justly, we have Jones writing pop songs and singing like DeShannon against a soulful backdrop. The more captivating moments of the concert are the up-tempo rock selections. "Tourist Town," I've Got Second Sight," and "The Real One" feature chiming rhythm guitar, delectable lead guitar licks and resounding base lines. The second half of "Live" losses some momentum, but closes with a tour de force titled "Inside These Arms." Here, Jones delivers her most passionate singing and the band is in top form.

Surprised that no one has reviewed this yet. Amazon.com doesn't give much info on this release, so I thought I'd rectify that. This is the second brand-new release on the "Mormon Tabernacle Choir" label, following their April 2003 release of "Consider the Lilies." Again, several of the arrangements are by Mack Wilberg, with direction by Craig Jessop and accompianment by the Orchestra at Temple Square. The track list is as follows:

The sound on this release is, if anything, even cleaner than the previous release, with the Choir and orchestra very evenly balanced. The programming includes a mix of both traditional and brand new songs, a couple of which (Stephen Paulus's "Hymn For America," and Charles Osgood's "The Pledge of Allegiance") were commissioned especially for this recording. Additional note: several of these songs were included on the Choir's 2003 Northeastern States tour, which was a huge success. I highly recommend this recording!

Energy, I Say!.......2004-07-02
Wow, what a gig!
I actually heard about this CD from a friend of mine, who mentioned Joshua's take on Sonny Rollins' "St. Thomas". After the stunning 4 minute introduction to the head of the tune, the band takes off.
The drummer, Brian Blade, several months ago held a clinic at a local jazz festival that my high school friends (who happen to be rhythm section players) and I played at. I was at a saxophone clinic at the time, but they said Brian was an amazing player, and this CD really shows his talent on the drums.
The uptempo C-minor blues, "Herbs $ Roots" is probably the most energetic recorded tune I have herd Joshua record to date (though I haven't heard ALL of his recordings yet). I did my best to read the solo transcription to it while it was playing.
In general, what a great, energetic CD with tons of amazing solos and transitions.
P.S. If you haven't been to the VV, I suggest you do so!
fun set.......2004-05-07
two minutes into this double cd, and you will remember why you love jazz in the first place--it's flat out fun! occasionally, jazz artists, critics, fans, et al, get lost in their own rhetoric defending the art of jazz and forget that jazz, like all music, is supposed to be fun. jazz is a wonderful art form, giving voice to the purely improvisational, the free spirit within us that compels us to create, to respond to our environment, and reveal the depth and breadth of feeling carried within us. mr. redman is more than proficient. he is an artist and an improviser of high order. but he also remembers to swing, to dance, and play. right from the get-go this album captures your heart and soul and for the next couple of hours holds you there. when you're done, you don't feel exhausted, but refreshed, like you would have been had you been in the vanguard the night this went down. this is a great live set by an artist who keeps right on enjoying what he's doing. enjoy!
Mr. Redman at his best!!!!!!!1.......2004-01-06
If I had to sum this album up in one word, I wouldn't be able to. This album is by far the best of Joshua Redman's work ( next to the album Elastic) Mr. Redmans albums are always superb, but they're nothing compared to the power he displays in live performances. The first time I saw or heard him play was at the Jacksonville jazz festival in the Spring of 2003 and I was floored! I was so completely mesmerized by his playing that I ran up next to the stage to get closer look and then found myself dancing to his solos. I soon stopped, when Joshua noticed me and began staring at me while he was playing and after taking a solo. He stared at me for quite some time too. The next day I went out and hunted down every Joshua Redman album I could find. This album brings back memories of that night. The energy from him comes thrugh this album so clearly. Every note he plays, packs a punch. A very powerful album indeed. A must buy for any fan of music!!!!
A clash of Musical Revisions and Musical Genius..............2002-04-03
I've had this CD for quite sometime and out of all the CD's I have in my possesion, I believe Joshua is ranked in the Top 5, if not the 1st, of the most influentical Contemporary artists for me and a personal rolemodel for me as a musician myself. This CD also highlights his ascending position in the Jazz World today. Some of my favorite tracks on the First of the two CD's are My One and Only Love. Even though it may seem just as a standard recreation of a valued classic, Joshua's use of glissandos (a techincal term, I know, but listen to the preview and u'll be able to recognize it when u hear it) and lip slides add a whole new level to the piece, one where self-expression is give the song a whole new value to the listener. Also his layed back style of soloing almost in a way, messes with the speed of the song for the better.
One more song I'd like to highlight is Second Snow. A very waltzy type of performance which adds gracefullness that can be like snow. It's soft & relaxed mood adds an atmospheric setting for me. His progression in the improvisation section also moves relaxed and layed back and as he gets further to the end of his solo, it becomes more complicated but not without a purpose, it follows through with a climatic end.
Bottom line, this is a valued CD to have in my collection and I'm sure for most people, you would value it too.
Grooves!!.......2001-10-26
This is a truly brilliant live 2cd set. And live is the way to hear jazz, and this album gives you the feeling that you are there in person. You can feel the excitement of the crowd. Redman and his quartet are excellent, and this set also shows off Joshua's songwriting skills, as all but 5 are written by him. I wasn't familiar with Redman until I purchased this album, and I was not at all disappointed. I mustn't forget the other musicians though, who also deserve to be mentioned. Peter Martin on piano, Christopher Thomas on bass, and Brian Blade on drums. Together, they make for a wonderful album which should belong in all jazz fans' collections.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-09-22
The following quote is a good way to introduce this album; it is from the poem "The Singer" by Eva A. Jessye. "Because of ebon skin and humble pride,The world with hatred thrust the youth aside.....And through our grief we rise to nobler things....A well of sweetness there unbidden springs." This disc portrays the talents of two wonderful musicians: Moses Hogan, excellent pianist, creator of exciting arrangements of spirituals both for solo voice and choirs AND that countertenor
Derek Ragin with his truly lovely voice capable of great vocal technique and versatility. He has appeared in several operas; two with Michael Chance that are wondrous to listen to: Tamerlano and Agippina. Spiritual are not my favorite thing, but there are some ear-catching beauties on this one;namely:"Ole Time Religion" and "Give Me Jesus". Some others are: 'Steal Away'-'Little David Play on your Harp'-'This Little Light of Mine' and many more. Some are a cappela, some accompanied by the piano, and some by piano with choir back-up. You do not have to be a lover of spirituals to enjoy this disc. But if you are, you will be in heaven!!!!!!
I Feel the Spirit Too.......2006-08-17
Very beautiful voice, sometimes I forget that the soloist voice is that of a male singer. Would like to hear more of Moses Hogan on keyboard and his arrangements.
just excellent.......1999-06-30
Although I do not like spirituals too much, it is a must listening to this fantastic countertenor singing with Moses Hogan. For me, Derek Lee Ragin has such a brilliant voice, I never heard before in my life.
Saw the Moses Hogan chorale live in NYC and loved them!.......1998-10-16
Truly great spirituals, truly brilliant arrangements by Moses Hogan. I can't wait to collect all his CDs.

Sonds like a great rock-progressive concert..........2001-01-29
Recorded in Paris, France in Feb 2000. This band can rock... progressively. In the likes of Dream Theater, long & manipulating songs (5 songs that are over 8 minutes in length), and a sound that is powerful - with emphasis on intricate song structure. Andy Kuntz sings wonderfully and sounds like he has been classically trained. Gunter Werno (keyboards) is spiritually uplifting with his new song "Journey To Paris" leading into the heavy "Spirit Of Life". The other great oldie-but-goodie is "Into The Sun". Stephan Lill reeks havoc on guitar and in my opinion he's the glue that holds this band together... not to mention Andreas Lill on drums. If you can get past some of the French singing on one or two of the songs and Kuntz talking to the audience from time to time in French, you will love this album. Very good sound production for a live show. This sounds like a great rocking progressive concert... I wish I had been there to see & hear it.
