Is this Heaven?.......2007-06-30
My intro. to these bunch of Germans was Tales From the Twilight World, an excellent place to start. This album further explores into the "power metal" realm. They really start to set themselves apart from the pack and create a unique sound all their own. Mainly due to Hansi Kursch's vocals, you'd soon be able to say without knowing in advance who the band is and just hearing it that this is Blind Guardian. SFB is chalk full of mystical/fantasy tales, including tales about J.R.R. Tolkien's, The Hobbit and Stephen King's, Dark Tower. They incorporate these themes into the music without being cheesy or childish though. Every chorus on here is a sing-along, catchy chant, usually with "gang vocals" to boot. As previously done on Follow The Blind and Tales From The Twilight World, Kai Hansen (a good friend of the guys) was brought in to make a guest appearance. This time playing lead guitar on The Quest for Tanelorn. Blind Guardian also makes use of piano (Black Chamber) which Hansi's vocals just soar on. They soley use bagpipes on the instrumental- The Piper's Calling, which reminds me alot of the movie Braveheart. So as you can see, they give us a nice variety of things on this 90's classic.
My favorite song on here would most likely be Somewhere Far Beyond, a 7 1/2 minute epic with maybe their greatest chorus, featuring bells. They also have a small interlude with bagpipes here which adds great diversity. The classic live staple, The Bard's Song-In the Forest is the definition of a beautiful song. This one is strictly acoustic with another amazing, memorable chorus. It has a very folky vibe to it. The Bard's Song- The Hobbit is another favorite with cool lyrics and excellent guitars. Time What Is Time is a great way to open up the album, starting with acoustic guitars and going into a thrashy/speed metal rhythm. Definitely one of the catchiest choruses also. You'll be in heaven as soon as this opener reaches your ears. Ashes To Ashes starts off with a haunting/chilling kind of nursery rhyme with strange voices in the background. The chorus on this one keeps building and building. Journey Through The Dark is simply a nice power metal tune with Blind Guardian's signature sound.Theatre of Pain is more symphonic metal than anything and was probably Blind Guardian's most adventorous song up to this point. The Quest For Tanelorn has a soaring, fists in the air chorus. Last, but not least are the two, minute long breaks in the album- Black Chamber and The Piper's Calling, both flowing smoothly with the rest of the album.
This is undoubtedly a great place to get your first dose of Blind Guardian. Tales From The Twilight World has many similarities and traits as this also, so if you like this, I would also reccomend that. I personally like Somewhere Far Beyond just a little better than "Tales" although both are excellent. Blind Guardian= Power Metal at it's finest.
Still a great band........2006-08-24
It's been a while since I listened to Blind Guardian (they used to be my favorite band when I was younger), but these guys will always have a special place in my heart. This is a really great album, the best of their faster, thrashier albums, in my opinion. After this, they started moving toward a bigger, more orchestral type sound, which I love, but the rawer, older stuff is great as well. Every song on here is great, particularly the title track (bagpipes! hoo-wah!), and the covers are great as well. It's cool how they did a Queen song (obviously one of their biggest influences), and an old 80's thrash song, to show where they got their sound from. They really brought those two worlds together really well.
Well, anyway, great band. Best power metal band ever, hands down. Can't wait for the new album.
"the bard's songs will remain.".......2006-07-22
although _Imaginations from the Other Side_ had better production, better songs, and more artistic progression all 'round, it is obvious that _Somewhere Far Beyond_ represented something of a turning point for this band of metal bards. their youthful, thrashy energy is starting to sound a little more tempered, more refined, more...mature? All in all, _Somewhere Far Beyond_ is very well-balanced album with deadly songcraft to boot -- there are at least five classic BG tracks on this disc, with a good range of amazing vocals, blazing speed, and bardic adventure. There are straight up power metal tracks like "Time What Is Time" and "Ashes to Ashes". "Quest for Tannelorn" is also pretty straight-up, with a more sorrowful, slow-tempo chorus and pythagorean subtelties. Then there are the tracks that really stand out. Then there are the BIG songs. First of all, "Journey Through the Dark" -- was their ever a more exhilarating power metal song? Its soaring, and i mean SOARING, chorus and intuitive tempo changes, and the infectious determination of Hansi's vocals make for one of the band's most cherished tracks. "Theatre of Pain" is a bombastic piece with synthed orchestrations (more than almost any other BG track), a gorgeous guitar solo, passages of varied intensity, and spine-tingling Hansi lines like "Now I'm gone and it seems that life had never existed". Then there are the two "Bard's Song" tracks, "In the Forest" and "The Hobbit" - the first is a gorgeous, stirring ballad, like a renaissance-era campfire song; the second is a galloping speed-metal cut using rearranged themes from the acoustic variation. Both sweep you up with their elating melodies and surprising grace. Finally there is the title track, a fast epic with huge harmonies, dramatic flow, one of the most "mega man"-esque guitar solos, and a chorus that makes me weep with its goodness. if at any time Hansi needs to prove how he can take basically "straight-up" metal music and make it INCREDIBLE, one must merely scope out this track. Also included are a pair short pieces -- the minute-long piano-and-voice piece "Black Chamber", and the atmospheric "The Piper's Calling", featuring bagpipes which also appear briefly during an instrumental interlude during the title track.
This is what you do........2006-02-04
1) Buy the cd.
2) When you get it, put in in the cd player and hit "play"
If you don't like it, damn it, it's not for you.
PS: That's all I had to do. One of their best releases.
A GEM - Power-Metal made from the guts and soul within!!.......2005-09-18
If you like metal in general and haven't listened to this album, you don't know what you are missing!!!
If you like Blind guardian but own the albums from Imaginations... and after then you must be a really confused person!!
It is difficult to give reviews in such albums, so I have to say that Somewher Far Beyond, together with Tales from the Twillight World are the best albums of Blind Guardian followed by Imaginations... -and one of the best in the power-speed metal genre.
Great riffs, fast songs with great lyrical mellodies and solos with every single sound making a difference and adding to the song. The album sounded fantastic when I was 16 and sounds that great even now that I am 26.
No matter how much the band will try albums like this can't be written twice. I mean its like Iron Maiden writing an album like Killers, or Iron Maiden, or Iced Earth writing Knight of the Stormrider. This cannot be done.
All the power, speed, inspiration, poetry, anger, and feeling is within this album and no matter how many times you listen to it you keep on finding something different.

Amazing Epic Power Metal.......2006-08-12
Blind Guardian may have completed their shift from thrash metal to power metal with their 1990 album Tales from the Twilight World, but it was 1992's Somewhere Far Beyond that established them as one of power metal's finest bands.
Somewhere Far Beyond seems, to me, like Blind Guardian's "aha!" moment. This is where their power metal direction, epic fantasy themes, and almost orchestral song arrangements were finally brought together to work in complete harmony. This is what a power metal album is supposed to sound like! The whole album is strong, but there are a few standout tracks, like "Time What Is Time", "Theatre of Pain", "the Bard's Song - In the Forest" and of course the epic title track, which was inspired by Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Gamma Ray's Kai Hansen once again makes a guest appearance, though only on guitar this time. His appearances served to give Blind Guardian some extra credibility, but I think this may be the album where the pupils outpaced the master.
It still blows my mind to think that this album was released in 1992. Epic power metal bands are a dime a dozen today, but at the time it was pretty much Blind Guardian and Gamma Ray (and perhaps Stratovarius, depending on how you classify them). I'd like to think that if I had known about Blind Guardian back then, I might not have jumped directly from Dokken and the Scorpions to Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. So many wasted years...
It took several years for Somewhere Far Beyond to be released domestically, but there are a few nice additions to make it worth the wait, including a song called "Trial by Fire" and an alternate version of "Theatre of Pain." The band's powerful cover of Queen's "Spread Your Wings" is the best addition though, and serves as a precursor to the direction the band would ultimately take on their Night at the Opera album a decade later.
This may not be Blind Guardian's best album overall, but it was definitely their best album at that point, and is as good, if not better than just about any power metal album released lately. Call it a must-have for Blind Guardian fans, and a good introductory album for anyone unfamiliar with the band.
The BEST OF ALL !!.......2000-10-31
Blind guardian are the best group in power-speed metal. "Somewhere far beyond" is the best album of the best band. 6 stars from 5. Buy it. NOW.
5 stars says it all!.......2000-01-10
The greatness of this BG's album cannot be put into words. I've heard all kinds of metal bands, and I always look for something in their music that leaves an impression. An impression of being unbeatable in some way. Well, this album combines the best of all that art BG is capable of. And if you guys know all the rest of their albums and how good they are, you know what I must be talking about if I claim this one is the best so far.
Blind Guardian's best work ever?.......1999-12-18
I'm a great BG fan and I've got all their records since a couple of years ago when I discoverd their greatness of music BG produces...
Without doubting for one second I'll say that Somewhere far beyond is the best BG album out there right now. It just grows the longer you're listening to it. Ok, Imagination and Nightfall are awesome albums too.. but after doing some listening Somewhere beats them I think.
Their most powerful ballad (the bards song: in the forest) combined with the explotive song Somewhere far beyond are the best in the way of music ever made...
awesome.......1999-09-16
this album is absolutely awesome. these guys definately know how to play traditional 80's metal with a polished 90's feel. this album seems to stand out among their other albums. it's not as thrash as their earlier albums but it sure shows the turning point into a more professional sound that is heard on their two releases that followed.
