Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Talented Rock Band.......2005-10-20

I must admit that I am guilty of generalizing this entire genre of music as being mostly "cosmetic" with little musical content to justify its popularity. What I heard on Firehouse's Prime Time has really changed my thinking. Extremely well crafted vocal leads with tight harmonies and skillful guitar features all weave together to provide strong melodic and rhythmic development; something painfully lacking in today's pop hits. The band's creative braintrust; Bill Leverty, really has a talent for writing and performing. I sincerely enjoyed it and would recommend it to others.

A return to form? Well, kind of....................2004-08-13

OK, so here we are with Firehouse's 6th studio release. You really have to give credit to these classic 80s bands that still manage to produce decent albums well into the 21st century. Some albums are better than others, and I must admit to being a bit disappointed with 'O2'. So what we really want to know is is this a return to the form and energy of Firehouse's first 2 albums? Cause let's be honest, that's what most of us have been hoping for and what this CD supposedly is according to other reviews.

In a nutshell, the answer is yes and no. They have made a jolly good effort, and credit is due here, but it is a bit of a hit and miss album.

First the good news. There are a few gems on this album. `Crash' and `Door to door' are classic Firehouse all out rockers. `Door to door' features Michael Foster on vocals and he does a very good job. This track also features some outstanding guitar soloing from Bill which you will not be able to help play air guitar to! The standout track on the album is `Perfect Lie'. With it's heavy intro, great lyrics, emotion and catchy melodic chorus, this song ranks as one of Firehouse's best songs ever. `Body language' and `Take me away' are above average.

Now for the bad news. There are too many average tracks. The first and title track is the band trying to sound funky and modern (similar to a few tracks on `O2') which just does not suit the band. The chorus just does not have any `kick' to it for it to even hope of comparing to the openers of previous albums like `Rock on the radio', `Reach for the sky', or `Can't stop the pain'. The 2 tracks with Bill on vocals (`Holding on' and `I'm the one') are rather dull and disappointing, which is a shame as his song on 'O2' was pretty good. The singing should definitely be left to CJ next time. The one ballad at the end `Let go' shows much promise with it's emotional intro, but the chorus sounds a bit like a nursery rhyme which is a real shame.

So overall, this is a decent effort and better than 'O2', but could have been so much better. They have captured the sound of their heyday, but only on a few tracks. If you are an established Firehouse fan like me, I'd say this is a must have album as the 3 or 4 great tracks really are fantastic. If you are a newcomer, the first 2 albums are a better bet.

There is no doubt about it that FireHouse is the best band around these days, no one can match them other than perhaps Tesla. This is a great album overall, really good stuff, give it a listen a couple of times. I agree with the other review, they should just let CJ Snare do the singing, he sings flat out better, and is amazing. But overall great job FireHouse!

Still putting out great music!.......2004-06-12

This continues on the Firehouse legacy. Another top studio CD from a great hard rock band. These guys have never stopped (unlike many of their other contemporaries) and there is good reason why. This is some solid music and a great live band.

I am a die hard Firehouse fan and find this addition to their collection disappointing...the worst yet. If you truly love all their prior efforts, you might find this one very sad as I did. More misses than hits to me. "Perfect Lie", IMO, is the best song on this album period. Just let CJ Snare sing all the songs next time guys....

Great Chicago-Style Blues.......1998-11-04

We used to go see Pappa Chubby when he fronted the house band at Manny's Car Wash in NYC for the Sunday night blues jam (part of which can be heard on this disk). He plays with passion and hard (he breaks a lot of strings) and sweats in your beer from the stage as he pounds out electric blues.

Wow! What a first........1998-08-27

Gritty vocals, strong guitar. Poppa Chubby is a find! From the opening track, Money, to the end you'll be bouncing to the beat. His vocals are strong, and you'll be amazed how he moves around a guitar! The horn backup on this album brings some modern feel to his otherwise plaintive guitar licks. So good, even my 15 year old is looking for his music!

this is not your father's Ornette Coleman.......2006-05-25

Yes, it's very different from Coleman's 60's records. Guess what - he's an evolving artist, even in his 60's and 70's! Actually compared to his other CD's from the 80's & 90's, such as "Virgin Beauty" and in "In All Languages", it's not THAT different.

This album took several listens to before I could wrap my brain around it. I won't repeat what previous reviewers have written. It's certainly very dense, challenging music which sometimes fools you into thinking it's just funky world beat, but then turns around and messes with your head. The lines the various instruments play are melodic and consonant, but the way they interact is somewhat disorienting at times, before falling back together. He manages to incorporate a huge variety of musical styles and influences and stir up something that could not possibly be anything other than Ornette! Overall this is fascinating music.

It's become one of my favorite Ornette Coleman albums (and yes, of course I love the 60's stuff!). Give this one several listens.

One of Ornette's Worst.......2005-05-24

I am huge fan of Ornette Coleman and own most of his albums. Tone Dialing is an attempt to break away from the acousic sound he used for so long and incorporate hip-hop and amplified instruments. He shoots and misses. His plastic horn is an afterthought behind the electric bass and heavy drums. And the reverb he uses is annoying. Simply, the group isn't nearly as good as his earlier groups. I would recommend The Shape of Jazz to Come, Change of the Century, or At the Golden Circle, anything but this one.

In order to save a dying art form you have to break new ground in the genera. Enter "Tone Dialing", THE most original jazz album of the 90's. This album strengthened my belief that free jazz is the most variable, individual jazz out there, and this album is the next ticket into that unconquered sonic wild. The disc starts out with "street blues", which is laced with hip hop, the rhythm section and the sax interacting in an almost stream-of-consciousness feel. What "Street Blues" foreshadows, "Search for Life" run's with. This is very close to an actual hip hop song, complete with rhymes, along with lots of the band's improv. "Bach Prelude" is the strangest Bach-jazz piece I have heard, chock full of polyrythms. Now we get to "Sound Is Everywhere", a surreal dream of a piece perfect for late at night when you're half asleep. Although far different that the atonality of Webern, it captures the same general mood. You get the feeling upon listening, that the unconscious is so close to the surface you can see it's periscope. "Miguel's Fortune" sounds almost like a Jazz-Cuban grateful dead jam. The next few songs definitely have a Cuban feel. ""If I Knew" is an (not exactly atonal) atonal ballad (not exactly a ballad) that almost gave me an orgasm the first listen. The whole album has a mood of quiet lucidity. One of Ornettes best, and the only one like it because Coleman rarely repeats himself. The rest of the album is just as groundbreaking, but running short of space. . .

The new forms of harmelodics........2000-04-26

I don't think any artist has accomplished so many great breakthroughs in one album as Ornette Coleman as in Tone Dialing. The album consists of 18 tracks ranging from about 3 to 10 minutes each, and from the harmelodic interpretation of Bach's prelude to the integration of Ornette's own styling of rhythmic vitality along with the flavor of hip hop, Afro-Cuban, and many unclassified genres that cannot be defined by any musical subcultures except Ornette's own. As for the performance of these unique musical concepts, I don't think Prime Time has ever been in better shape than it is now at the release of this album. This is my absolute favorite of all the Prime Time albums (that I own). It's difficult to say what tradition this album is in, or what album I'd compare it to, since Ornette Coleman is in the habit of breaking tradition, and experiments with bold, original forms as often as possible (this being not one, but many of them), but I'd recommend it to anyone who like any of (but not limited to)0 the following albums by Ornette Coleman: Science Fiction, Song X, Free Jazz, In All Languages, or The Art of Improvisers.

One of the best Christian Rap cd's ever!.......2000-08-30

Prime Minister has proven himself to be better than all the rest of the Christian rappers, featuring 16 awesome tracks on this cd! It was a great move to feature Antonious on this album. The best songs are Round & Round (The World Goes), H.U.S.H., and I Wish (I Could've Told Ya). If you like Dr. Dre-like background music and awesome lyrics, this cd is for you. This is one awesome album!

Don't Bother.......2000-08-12

There's a reason that there are over 200,000 albums ranked before this one. Even if I was a big fan of rap, I would be a fan of bad rap. If you enjoy droning, monotone vocals with no real music to back it up then maybe this is for you, but even then I wouldn't recommend it. Maybe try Grits or something (try anything else... please!!).

underappreciated music gets recognition.......2000-04-16

The best reason to own this CD is that you will not find many of these songs anywhere else. Some have been recorded on an album for the first time here. Others are only available on very rare LPs.

The difficulty in enjoying an album like this is that songs from musicals are often very contextual--if you haven't seen the show it's hard to relate. Because this is a collection of unrelated cuts and not an entire show, some of the songs seem orphaned. The best tracks are those songs with more or less universal themes--songs not dependent on a storyline to give them depth. A couple examples of this type are "Listen To Your Heart," "One Day At A Time" and "Who Needs To Dream."

The performances are hit and miss--a few lack any conviction ("Man Wanted" is a sassy tune but this rendition is flat). Other songs are simply beautiful ("It Doesn't Matter Anymore," "You're So Right For Me").

No matter if he's good or bad. He's still the man and keepin it real and staying closer. Today he's my favorite Christian rapper w/ B.B. Jay, The Procussions, Corey Red & Precise, Shai Linne, Lil Raskull, etc. Like this CD is rollin' and definitely a must-have for all Christian rap lovers and 'specially rap or non-rap fans alike.

If u luv 2Pac, Scarface, 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, DMX, Lil Raskull, NuWine, MC Hammer, among others, you must checkout this right here. He never cuss, he never talks dirty or raw or whatever. He talk spiritually to the Word of God.

I recommend this along w/ Inside Out and Flexx's God Is On My Side which consider be a CLASSIC. Christian rap rocks!

I love this cd. I heard it once at a friends house and it was awesome so I had to go and get it. I found it at Target for cheaper than anywhere else. I was really happy about there great prices. Also my Mom works on the flow team at target so I can get a discount too..that was an advantage.(laughs) anyway for any of you that like rap out there this is the CD to buy. YOu'll love it.
