i guess no one gets it........2000-05-29

Ok, for those of you who complain that this sounds like the "result of a blurry hangover" or wonder why it sounds so punk-esque, it's because it was recorded in 1977. Which puts it more in the Strontium 90 period, pre-Police and a long way from his solo efforts(in fact, Mike Howlett also of Strontium 90 plays bass on this single). Of course, I really like the more polished, meticulous Sting albums. But I'd have to say that my favorite Police material is definitely the "Fallout" single so I enjoy the gritty, raw and underproduced energy captured in this recording. An excellent example of a more youthful and vivacious Sting tackling a major issue of the time. Don't buy this expecting to hear "Fields of Gold". This single is for the hardcore Police fan or the Sting completist. If you're not one of these, you should probably stay clear.

Wow. I must say I didn't know Sting was into that punk-quiescience Stewart Copeland sounding stuff anymore. I am a very loyal sting fan- who isn't of the kagillion people on the internet? Does anyone know when or what year (or what week) these songs were written? Does Sting know? Or is this just the result of a blurry hangover? I am embarrassed. This would be ok on any other day, but hey, why should I cry for him?

sting, steve hillage (gong), mike howelet(producer) and nik turner(hawkwind) are here.only 5 songs 1 and 5 are really the same song.buy it if you are a sting completist.great package job!....as for the music....ahhhh thats another story. track 1 and 5 get by, the rest don't :-)...this cd should Be filed UNDER STING !

exactly what the older fans have been waiting for for a long time now!! we don't want all these new joe-schmoe bands formed in 2002 or later doing exactly what the originals (In Flames, Children of Bodom, Opeth, At the Gates...) did. That's boring. If we want the originals, we'll listen to the originals.

But Omnium Gatherum is different.

When we're calling the above list "classics" the way we now call Helloween, Maiden, and Metallica classics, these guys are gonna be the new "originals."

Omnium Gatherum's style is unlike most of what I've heard coming out of euro death/doom/black metal recently. Bands like In Flames, Soilwork, even bodom - they've died. They're not producing what they're (once) capable of.

Omnium Gatherum, to me, is the Sonata Arctica of death metal. No song is linear. Each song could be considered an epic, even with 4 of them being under 4 minutes. (note that the song with a video, The Fall Went Right Through Here, is NOT a good example of this characteristic.)

Now what do I mean by that? Each song will take you on a miniature journey. And instrumentally, there are more speed changes than one could imagine (the term "technical metal" comes to mind here, but I'm not too familiar with the use of it, so I could be wrong) and keys/synths aren't used all throughout. They only help enhance certain areas where the emotion is high.

You don't find political lyrics here. Nothing criticizes the government, terrorism, how humanity's in an endless downward spiral, blah blah blah blah blah blah. That's what all the other bands are doing. Omnium Gatherum's staying true to what the true fans of euro metal really like. Yup - the lyrics are pure emotion. songs to dive into.

Production is clear, but somewhat raspy. Morbid Angel comes to mind here.

I agree with many people who say that the Nuclear Blast label has been in a bit of a downfall the last few years. This album stands strong, simply put.

its the trendy thing (I gather) to mention Insomnium with Omnium Gatherum. well, I don't really know them very well, but from the samples I've heard, yes - these 2 bands are similar.

I like Filip's voice in this album, so, no many people didn't agree with me, but he's style make the songs much darker with atmosphere. The music is tight in every sense, the drummer is great, shows some complexity and change of tempos. The guitars are excelent, very technical. If you want to try something different, try this, a very good melodic death metal.

Proof That Death Metal Is Far From Dead.......2005-07-01

I just listened to these guys today. I bought both albums on a whim, and I have to say, this is some of the best death metal I have ever heard. I'm more of a prog death fan, as indicated by my love for Opeth, but these guys rule.

They combine death, thrash, and progressive metal in one seamless blend. Just listen to "Black Seas Cry". Amazing stuff.

Crushing riffs, keyboards truly used for atmosphere rather than to carry the tune, a guitarist whose solos can stand on their own...the only thing one can complain about Omnium Gatherum is the style of the vocals. They are about as brutal as it gets.

Well worth the money.

Cold, melancholic and brutal.......2005-05-30

Omnium Gatherum are a Finnish death metal band playing cold, melancholic music that is often marked by fierce guitar riffs, interesting drum work, effective melodies and a very interesting singer to say the least. Antti Filppu's vocals may take a little while to absorb. Both his regular clean singing and death grunts are significantly different - he mostly spurts out the lyrics in a half-screamed and half-growled style, yet it is still easy to discern the words because his vocals are neither too distorted nor as brutal as, say the Cannibal Corpse or Six Feet Under vocalists.

Filppu's vocals mostly remind me of former Sentenced singer Taneli Jarva's style of delivery on the first The Black League album, Ichor. As a matter of fact, Years in Waste is also in the same vein, except that the music here is more on the technical and aggressive side. As with many other Finnish bands, Omnium Gatherum create a melancholic atmosphere despite their undeniable heaviness and raw approach to songwriting. The subtle employment of keyboards seems to add an extra layer that lends itself to plenty of comparisons that are hard to pinpoint. That said, Years in Waste is a very grim album, as both the artwork and song titles suggest, but it's completely devoid of gothic elements, which makes it very listenable. Then again, I don't really think they are a very melodic death metal band either, and certainly do not share anything common with bands like At The Gates or Katatonia as the label claims. Omnium Gatherum offer a harsher and more shadowy kind of metal occasionally mixed with sweeping guitar lines that spiral into punishing death metal riffs. The atmospheric vibe is also retained, as you will notice on "Black Seas Cry" which is the most The Black League tinged track with its acoustic guitars and constant tempo changes.

"No Moon & No Queen" sees the band merging their technical aspect with agile melodies that easily make this song stand out. There are also interesting guitar solos and a very competent drum work that focuses on adding the final touch on the songs "Gravesilence" and "Auguries Gone".

The album is slightly flawed though. I feel the drum sound really takes away from Jarmo Pikka's performance and the fact that they chose to open the album with one of the weakest tracks may turn some listeners off. Also, some of the riffs sound out of place, especially when the rhythm guitarist tends to follow the bass player (who is very integral on this disc) and merely plods along with him. There is plenty of crunch in the music, but they don't always develop into interesting melodies that stick to the mind, leaving you concentrating on the vocals, which I already said are an acquired taste. I personally like the singing, but can see many others being uninterested in Omnium Gatherum because of the vocals on Years in Waste. Certainly worth checking out though - there aren't too many bands like this around.
