4 out of 5 stars Bhangra at its best.......2006-03-08

The music is relaxing and the melody familiar. I love how they are able the convert the classic Sabbath on to Bhangra without losing the songs essence. It's a respectable effort. If you love Sabbath and crew and want to experience something different, this CD is for you, even if you don't particularly like Black Sabbath you will still enjoy the bhangra harmony. I would like a volume two with some newer works such as Heaven and hell, Zero the hero, Headless cross. The artwork is terrible and boring.

4 out of 5 stars Not A Novelty Record........2003-05-16

Being a fan of both (early) Black Sabbath and Indian Pop music / Bhangra / Sitar, I just had to try this one and I'm very glad I did.

The music on this CD is more than listenable on it's own & the Black Sabbath connection only makes it more interesting.

It works so well (esp. N.I.B.) that I might just buy their Sex Pistols Tribute next.

Recommended - have a listen to the samples on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Helloween was made for something like this 5/5 stars.......2006-12-12

Mostly these bands they sang in their metal version are awesome but most of these bands are not my kind of musical artists but still I give it a 5 stars because helloween had recreated their songs with a more of an bad a** attitude metal sound which the original artists wouldn't mind having their songs remade in a kick a** metal version. I think that this was made for ani deris he is an awesome singer that can really kick a** from these artists THE BEATLES/DAVID BOWIE/SCORPIONS/FAITH NO MORE/CREAM/JETHRO TULL/ALEX HARVEY/FOCUS/FRANK MARINA/CREAM/ & of course ABBA. Mostly these were not my favorite bands but he created them in his own power metal sound and his awesome voice. I wish he would have done one of those songs from pink floyed like teacher leave them kids alone not sure if that's the name of the song but I loved that song now that would be awesome and would be something that ani deris and the band is more capable of creating in their own sound and voice because they are a very intellecual power metal band.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Effort.......2005-01-10

At first, I didn't get this CD. I mean, come on... Abba? David Bowie? The Beatles? Shoot, why isn't Manfred Mann covered?

But then something happened... I played the CD again, and again, and yet again... Then, I couldn't STOP playing it. The bottom line? An amazing CD... Sure, this may seem like a waste because they did someone else's work. But when they crank out that Beatles' number as if it were written by Helloween themselves and NOT a re-incarnation of the Beatles, you just start head banging...

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2004-09-12

Don't get me wrong-Helloween are one of my favorite bands, but this is just plain hysterical! As great as it is (I don't own it, but I listened to it at a friend's house), it just seems totally wack that Helloween would cover songs by Abba, The Beatles, and David Bowie. But what's even more wack is that they were pulled off PERFECTLY! Helloween fans would definetely crack up over this album!

3 out of 5 stars From Outta Somewhere.......2003-12-07

After producing the definitive speed/thrash/pop metal blend in the late 80s, Helloween disappeared into Self-Indulgence Land in the early 90s, taking the best part of 10 years to rediscover the sound their original fans appreciated so much.

And to celebrate, they unleashed their unique sound on some of their favourite pop and rock songs of the past few decades. "Metal Jukebox" is an eclectic little collection, to say the least. The Scorpions' "He's A Woman-She's a Man" and Faith No More's "From Out Of Nowhere" are the two closest tracks to what Helloween are normally about. They stomp along as solid rocking, good fun tracks. From there, the album steps into, well, space.

David Bowie's "Space Oddity" is given a faithful, respectful treatment here. No one does Bowie better than Bowie, but this is about as good as you'll ever hear this song done by anyone else. Andi Deris' voice is not a match for Bowie's but he gives it his best shot without sounding strained. Also having a few decades advantage over the original, in which time production techniques have improved markedly, Markus Grosskopf's wandering basslines bubble their way higher into the mix than on the old classic.

ABBA's "Lay All Your Love On Me" and The Beatles' "All My Loving" are perhaps the furthest removed from the originals, and both are pulled off with great effect- the feel of the originals is kept, while simultaneously being given a kick in the arse. Yep, Helloween still have that ear for great pop tunes, even if they didn't write 'em. And it also shows Paul and John, and Benny and Bjorn, could well have been closet headbangers - these songs translate to a metalled-up sound extremely well.

There are a few more straight rockers, like a fairly decent cover of Jethro Tull's "Locomotive Breath", and "White Room" by Cream, but it is the lesser-known songs which really make this album. The instrumental "Hocus Pocus" by, er... Focus allows Helloween's impressive guitar duo to really let strip, with solid riffing and good old fashioned guitar solos, so often neglected these days. There are a few other little known gems hidden away here which really set this album up. It could easily have been an exercise in metallic karaoke self-parody, or an utter sycophantic tribute album. It's not. It's a well-established metal band showcasing what they can do and where they came from, and having a lot of fun while they do it.

4 out of 5 stars fun to listen.......2003-07-16

Although not totally in line with the usual Helloween style, lacking the originality observed in other albums, it is fun to experience unique interpretation of famous songs. Can you ever think of Abba in Power Metal? What about Beatles? Interestingly, Abba's "Lay all your love on me" and Beatles' "all my loving" are better than Scorpions' "He's a woman She's a man".

It would be a 5-star album if it were not really like a jukebox -- every song looks like from a different album, arranged by an amateur...

4 out of 5 stars Great comp -- still relevant 10 years later.......2005-08-07

I used to own this CD, but it seems to have "disappeared" (along with several others) a few weeks ago -- right around the same time my girlfriend and I broke up. Ironically, I think I "borrowed" it from an old girlfriend to begin with. What comes around goes around, I guess. Anyway, I'm rebuilding my CD collection, not to mention my life, and I figured I'd start with Punk Rock Jukebox. I just got my new copy, and it's as fresh and relevant as it was in 1995. There are so many good bands on here... bands that, had they been around today instead of back then, would be selling insane quantities of records and selling out large theaters nightly. I guess this actually happened for one of the comp's bands, Sublime (R.I.P. Brad Nowell), but it's a shame that more people haven't heard some of the others. So to anyone reading this: here's your chance! This comp features 23 solid 90s punk acts covering their favorite punk songs from yesteryear. The Swingin' Utters' cover of Cocksparrer's "I Got Your Number," The Goops' version of Stiff Little Fingers' "Barbed Wire Love," and Brody's rendition of Dag Nasty's "Justification" are standouts. Each captures the same spirit as the original while putting a new spin on it. I think the Brody song is the last track they ever recorded. Singer Keith Cucuzza is in rare form here, raw and guttural, while maintaining his melodic style. H2O's rendition of Marginal Man's "Friend" is also strong. I had the pleasure of seeing them play this song in New York. I remember Todd Morse (who had just joined on guitar) totally took out some would-be stage diver with the headstock of his guitar. Blood everywhere. Not a pretty sight. But the band played on. Now that's punk rock! Last word: Don't let the hokey cover art fool you; this CD is the real thing.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Great groove.......2007-01-08

I love this album in and of itself. Great chill-out background music, and if you like Bhagra, all the better. about halfway thru many songs, you get a vague realization that you just might "know this song" - ie, the original song being covered. but often you can't really be sure. and then you get lost again in the excellent vibe and then who really cares. I admit that I am a fan of a few of the covered artists (Jane's Addiction, Nirvana, others), but they still are at least one dimension below the surface here. in fact, one of the best songs is "Cars," and I can barely remember the original. Don't buy this as a "cover song novelty" - rather, buy it if you like good chill-out grooving lounge music, and you'll be very happy.

5 out of 5 stars Strap on your seat belts.......2000-11-23

Wow! We just picked this album up as a hoot--the cover caught our attention, and the song list intrigued. If you're up for some experimental stuff, you have found it. It really defies description, and I have listened to a lot of very esoteric music. If pushed, I'd say you have something akin to a cross between the Space Negros and Shockabilly and Beatle's sitar. The instruments are haunting, the arrangements fab, and the overall musicality top notch. If you like your music on the edge (of just about everything), this is a good catch.

3 out of 5 stars Punk is so, so, soooooo dead!.......2002-06-12

Once upon a time, not so very long ago, there was a small music label called Invisible Records. They hosted all sorts of avant garde industrial acts, like Pigface and Meg Lee Chin and Sheep on Drugs. The music was hard-listening, the very antithesis to adult contemporary music, relying on backbeats and way too many mind-altering chemicals.

Then something funny happened. The focus slowly drifted away from the industrial and into a weird sort of fuzzy land motivated, perhaps, by a different variety of mind-altering chemicals. Martin Atkins, Julian Beeston, Bobdog Catlin, and Rahul Sharma got together and formed a bizarre band called Opium Jukebox. They wanted to do some mystical-sounding Indian music, but at the same time, didn't want to stray too far from their alternative music roots. What to do, what to do?

They covered classics of the Sex Pistols, of course! And thus was Never Mind the Bhangra Here's the Opium Jukebox was born. ... It is not true to the original destroy-everything intent of the band.

    I think that's why it's so amusing.

This is sort of a muzakked Ravi Shankar-sounding thing, with occasional elements of that Invisible Records sound I was talking about earlier. Only the barest bones of the original songs' melodies are retained. Everything else has been chewed up by a sitar and spit out onto a glistening, shiny CD.

I think Opium Jukebox have done for punk what Pat Boone did for heavy metal. Take that as you will....

In case you've never heard Helloween, their sound is not unlike "Ride the Lightning" or "Master of Puppets" era Metallica: fast and clean, but not too hard by today's standards.

Whether you've heard of them or not, this album is worth a listen. Hearing Helloween perform covers of old-time favorites by The Beatles, Scorpions, David Bowie and (believe it or not) Abba is well worth the price of the CD.

This album is clearly made just for fun, Helloween have even said so themself. The songs sounds like they are played by a garage band (talented garage band, but still..). In my opinion, the only great song is "all my loving", a Beatles cover. The Abba song "Lay all your love on me", is ok, but you would be better off listening to the Abba version. This record should only be bought by Helloween fans who needs it too complete their collection, since other people will be better of buying another album by helloween.
