5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Hot damn is right.......2007-05-07

This is the kind of hardcore that is above scene politics. It's too loud and raw for those who fish from the mainstream, but I honestly can't see how someone can listen to this entire album and not be impressed. The guitar riffs are not typical in the least and the drums keep your adrenaline rush going. You simultaneously want to dance and slam your fist into something hard. It's rock with a dirty South slap. Keith Buckley's yell-singing makes him sound like he's about to lose consciousness, but his lyrics make it clear that he's far from incoherent. In fact, he sounds like quite the intellectual. I've had the pleasure of seeing Every Time I Die live twice, and boy is it a sight to behold. You feel brutalized, but you love it. "Ebolarama" is a crowd favorite, it really gets the mosh pit going. "I Been Gone a Long Time" sounds like something you'd find playing in a dark, dirty bar serving clientèle of a questionable nature. "Off Broadway" has some of the most interesting lyrics I've heard. Every Time I Die are not just a band, they're an experience. And this album fully embodies that.

5 out of 5 stars Godspeed this band to #1.......2006-07-05

Just like Johnny Terror when I bought this I was like what the heck? So i put it away for awhile. Then I brought it out again for a listen. Then after a couple more listens i was hooked. The songs work well together. I love the comfy feel.

And the song structure as everyone says is just plain awesome. Even through the chaos every thing falls in line perfectly. The no chorus part was the reason why I didnt like it to begin with. After listening I ended up love it cept it takes a lot to remember all the lyrics in the cd.

If you want one of the best new hardcore acts cd, you best get on now before you get called a mainstream poser.

4 out of 5 stars The Don Quixote of the ICU.......2006-03-01

When I bought this album about a year ago, I hated it. But as a I listened more and more, I began to understand the genius of this band. The music isnt your average verse/chorus/breakdown/whatever thats become standard to this genre. ETID combines elusive and experimental song structure with catchy riffs. Another great part of this album is the lyrical content. Satire, irony, and humor are all incorporated. The vocals are delivered with an urgency in his voice that is very rare in this scene. Great drinking cd as well, makes u wanna party all nite with prostitutes and an assortment of drugs (is that wierd?). Are you going to fight someone? Play track 1 before you fight, it will make you ready to take on an army. This cd is definately in my top 10, maybe top 5. (number 1 being The Bled's 'Pass the Flask')

3 out of 5 stars Average.......2005-12-26

This is basically your normal cd. Has a few good tracks, and 1-3 great tracks.

Ebolorama is the best track on the album. It's one of my all-time favorite songs.
The other stand-out song is She's My Rushmore.

Apart from that, this album isn't all that exciting.

4 out of 5 stars ETID's My Rushmore!!!.......2005-10-16

EVERYTIME I DIE - Hot Damn!
-
Well its novelty has worn off a bit since I first purchased it... but it's still a bad-ass Rock & Roll meets odd-timed Metal/Hardcore CD. Truthfully this 28 minute makes me want to dance and break things all at the same time. It is relatively satisfying for such a short CD.
Keith lyrics are some of my favorite of all of the Metal / Hardcore Vocalist out there. The fact that he sounds like an asylum escapee definitely fits the chaos in there music.
Truthfully this isn't as good as Dillinger or many other Math/Tech-Metal bands... but this album grooves, plain and simple. And deserves a listen or two.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

The movie version of The Rocky Horror Show has turned into such an enduring cult success that it has pretty much obliterated the fact that it all started with a stage show. And now Richard O'Brien's musical is back on stage, where some say it truly belongs (it was nominated for the category Best Revival of a Musical in the 2001 Tony Awards). With a great cast that includes Dick Cavett, Alice Ripley (Janet), Tom Hewitt (Frank 'N' Furter), and Daphne Rubin-Vega (Magenta), the revival fires on all cylinders. Note that while Joan Jett was in the cast as Columbia, she's not on the CD (Kristen Lee Kelly is). But Lea DeLaria, last seen stealing the show in On the Town, more than compensates by playing both Eddie (Meat Loaf in the movie!) and Dr. Scott--and doing great by both. As a bonus, the song "Once in a While" is back after being cut from the movie. Bursting with energy, this recording brings the rock back in Rocky. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite cast recordings.......2007-01-17

This was the first Rocky Horror album I've ever listened to besides the movie soundtrack. Despite the lack of Joan Jett as Columbia and the 2nd Usherette, this album is sweet. Daphne-Rubin Vega is perfect as Magenta. And Tom Hewlett 's interpretation as Frank N. Furter is just in sync with the character. But he's still no Tim Curry. And the rest of the cast is sublime. And with Dick Cavett as the Criminologist and famed lesbian comedienne Lea DeLaria as both Eddie and Dr. Scott is just excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Thougt You Were The Candyman Didn't ya freggy!.......2006-06-22

I thought that this was gonna be just another edition of the Rocky Horror Show. But boy was I wrong.I loved it they really modernized and gave it more of a Rock flavor than in the original play which was more pop.I just loved how they had the Overture and Space shipa partof the cd.They really recreated great for broadway. When i heard that broadway was doing Then Rocky Horror Show I didn't know what to think.Because Rocky Horror had been an off-broadway show for many years. The thought of it being onBroadway was just amazing Because people back in the 70's and 80's always thought that The Rocky Horror Show was much too trashy to be put on Broadway.Because you always think about broadway plays as being classy and eligent. They didn't want a play about Sex and Horror and Gay Transvestites. But this was just a head turner.I loved it.It's definitely 5 stars. The cd quality was great. It was so professionally done and it was great.I think any RHS Fan will love it.This was no candyman!

4 out of 5 stars The Rockiest Recording to Date.......2006-06-07

This 2000 Broadway revival of the cult classic THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW boasts a completely re-vamped orchestration of Richard O'Brien's score. This is certainly the most rock-fused version of these songs to date, and right from the "Overture" the listener can assume this. Many may not be able to accept this harder, bolder score and I myself am a bit skeptical, considering the more piano-driven and sci-fi sounding orchestrations of the film soundtrack or Roxy cast recording. However, it is so interesting to hear these songs done like this that I cannot help but enjoy it. The performances are half-and-half. Daphne Rubin-Vega belts out the opening number in that great gravelly voice she has, and Raul Esparzza sends chills down my spine every time I hear his two great solo moments ("The darkness must flow down the river...." and "Frank 'N' Furter, it's all over..."). Sebastian LaCause is amazing as Rocky, as thankless a part that is. Eddie and Dr. Scott being portrayed by a woman (Lea DeLaria) is one of the strangest casting decisions ever and is too distracting to be able to even listen to her (his? I don't know!!!) songs: "Hot Patootie" and "Eddie's Teddy." Tom Hewitt does his best as Frank 'N' Furter, but the character was so well defined by Tim Curry in the film (one of the most underrated performances ever) that one can't help but ignore him. I'd say that this recording is something every ROCKY HORROR fan should listen to; it just all depends on whether you like the new or original orchestrations.

3 out of 5 stars Good recording, bad show........2006-03-10

Rocky Horror is an American institution. It's indelible, unforgettable, and entirely unique. But without the audience participation, the show is revealed - it's simply not very good. It's a passable (if dated) parody of '50s B-movies with a transvestite main character and some halfway decent songs. The show lives with and dies without an audience. The lyrics, the characters - nothing is half as fun without the audience throwing and shouting and bantering right along.

That said, this is a VERY good recording of what's there. Tom Hewitt does as good a job as anyone trying to fill Tim Curry's sequined heels, and brings some nice twists to the table instead of going the Curry-imitation route. Raul Esparza as Riff-Raff is electric - his rendition of "Time Warp" is unlike anything else you're likely to hear on a cast recording. He blasts it right into outer space, screaming like the world's going to end. Daphne Rubin-Vega is plenty of fun as Columbia, giving a nicely sinuous and raw-edged sexiness to the role. The orchestra gives their all to the new arrangements, and they sound crystal clear.

It's definitely the best recording of the show available, even sans Tim Curry.

3 out of 5 stars Oh Daphne!.......2005-12-29

Most of the reviews have it right here - this production wasn't really Rocky at it's best. That being said, I must say that Daphne Ruben-Vega as magenta is probably one of the most interesting, refreshing, and note worthy things about this recording. Very cool in that regard.

That's All...

Organist Smith's career stretches back to the 1960s heyday of soul jazz, and over the years he's played with an impressive range of artists from jazz leaders (George Benson, Lou Donaldson) to pillars of soul and pop (including Etta James and Gladys Knight). Too Damn Hot! finds his robust Hammond B-3 moving easily from funk (the saucy "Back Track") to fusionist updates ("Track 9"), balladry ("Silver Serenade"), and plenty of riveting organ-combo forays (such as "The Whip"). Smith's roots naturally and confidently mix a healthy range of music, all connected and empowered by his committed playing, full of both invention and tradition. --David Greenberger

4 out of 5 stars Jimihendrixing Hammond-bro.......2007-04-14

Oh boy, This Doctor is no Sh-t. This doctor knows how to play his Hammond-bro, and sure knows how to build up a solo too. Buikding up a solo? He is Jimihendrixing his organ. This doctor heals all your wounds, this doctor will get ya thru another millenium.
Why not start your day with this wunderfull album? Lustful, dirty, its jazz, its swinging, please leslie!, eager, ready, consumptious, SOULful.... Play it, feel it, enjoy, this is how joy musically sounds, be happy. Get it, and for one thing: go see this one and only Motherf-cker alive. He will love it, and you love it and wont be the same afterwards.
This is jazz music straight from the heart, and even your mother will confess: our Doctor speaks an international tongue of jazz and soul music staight from the heart.
Enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars Weak...Especially PB on the Guitar.......2006-07-19

Wow...I thought this album was going to be "Too Damn Hot"...it is "So Damn Not" that it's frightening.

The tunes are weak, the Doctor's playing is OKAY but not inspired and Bernstein's guitar playing is beyond lame. I've seen Bernstein at a club uptown and he was decent at best (better comping, not a great soloist) but this album doesn't display the best of either of these wonderful musicians' capabilities.

5 out of 5 stars B3 MASTER.......2006-04-22

This record is the good Dr.'s best yet. Phenominal musicianship on the part of all members. Groovy as heck. I don't understand why this hasn't sold a million copies. Go see him live. He is unreal. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars sweet organist.......2005-06-25

i do not own this CD, but i recently saw the doctor at a local jazz club and was blown away. He had a good sense of humor and was very worldly. He would ascend and spiral upwords untill every one in the club's heart rate had spead up 100 notches... and BOOM... he was back to being relaxed old lonnie. at the break i met him, and got an autograph. He was very insightful musical and with spoken words.I would reccomend seeing him live, aswell as buying his album.
