Band on the Run should have been a disaster. Two of Wings' original members quit in a huff just before its production. The whimsical decision to record in Lagos, Nigeria, became a nightmare when McCartney and company found themselves in a decaying studio, then had many of the project's demos stolen by armed bandits. Despite these hardships--perhaps because of them--Band on the Run remains the most focused and consistently satisfying record of McCartney's wildly uneven post-Beatles career. This mini box set contains the original album, a well-written booklet by Mark Lewisohn, and a bonus disc featuring outtake snippets and interviews with all the album's participants (including its cover crew, which includes actors James Coburn and Christopher Lee) and Dustin Hoffman, who recounts how he spurred McCartney to spontaneously write "Picasso's Last Words" on a dare. This second disc would make a fine radio show; it comes up short where it matters most--in music. Time spent detailing the album-cover photo session could have been more gratifyingly devoted to more contemporary outtakes (much of the bonus Band material is culled from live performances from as recently as the mid '90s; perhaps McCartney wants us to know how important the record has been to him over the years) or to a pair of single B-sides, which are curiously absent here. --Jerry McCulley

Classic Early 70's Rock Album.......2007-05-05

The best and most successful Rock album Paul McCartney, with Wings released. It is a classic rock album worthy of its praise, its boldness and McCartney was back with a bang with an emphatic message to the music world.

1. Band on the Run - A classic.

2. Jet - A classic. What a one-two punch to kick of the album?

3. Bluebird - Beautiful harmonies. Underrated.

4. Mrs. Vandebilt - A silly story song made good by Paul's great vocals and great musicianship of his trio.

5. Let Me Roll It - Remains a concert staple and fan favourite. This song is best performed live, the studio version is a weaker immitation of the real thing, which is live baby.

6. Mamunia - The melody master near his best, but many people don't know this song, it is a pleasure to listen to. Macca's voice is at its clearest, the band harmonises in peak form.

7. No Words - Has a Beatles/Badfinger sound to it. Paul and Denny harmonising is really something to hear.

8. Helen Wheels - A fun and catchy rocker, nothing earth shaking.

9. Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me) - Macca's musical response to a Dustin Hoffman challange. Its a great song, I love the drunken feel to the music, great engineering.

10. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five - A pulsating climax to the album, most of Pauls best albums finish with a bang.

One Of The Finest Rock Albums Ever Made, No Question About It........2007-03-04

By 1974, Paul McCartney's solo career had an interesting conflict associated with it. He scored big with his first few solo albums, scoring big with hit singles like "Another Day", "Live And Let Die" and "My Love". His loyal fanbase was broader than ever.

However, Paul and his newly formed band Wings were ripped apart by music critics who felt John and George's solo work was far more innovative and overall worth owning. Paul decided to put an end to this criticism. He, along with his wife Linda and his fellow Wings bandmates, jetted down to Legolas in Africa to record what would become one of the best rock albums ever made. After several months that resulted in various technical problems as well as a mugging, "Band On The Run" was released.

"Band On The Run" is, to put it in simple terms, an awesome album. This is Paul at his best. This the Paul we all know and love. He is loose, focused and clearly enjoying himself along with the rest of the band. The album opens with the classic title track, which starts off as a slow, kind of whiny number, then picks up the pace a bit as an ominous revnge fantasy, then, out of nowhere, the horns flair up as if it were some sort of musical exodus, you can feel the rain exploding with a mighty crash drenching you. It's one of the most stunning musical moments on record.

From here on in, the album never lets up. "Jet" is a McCartney classic and a concert staple. A fast paced, wild rocker with a blast your throat out chorus and classic riff. "Helen Wheels" is a crazed bulldozer of a number that will blow your speakers out if played too loudly. This is Paul at his most raucous. "Let Me Roll It" is a blueslier number, a great love song that remains a concert showstopper. "Bluebird" and the lovely "Mamunia" provide the more mellow moments here, but do not drag down the album at all. The vitriolic "No Words" is a raw, gutsy ballad with some of Paul's most cynical and best lyrics ever. "Picasso's Last Words" is a three part chronicling of the last hours before the passing of the famous artist, complete with a singalong chorus and French interlude. The closing "Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five" is an out and out musical extravaganza complete with intense instrumental breaks and some fine piano work by Sir Paul. The one clunker is "Mrs. Vanderbilt", and even that's fine for what it is.

Disc 2 is the real treat. You get Paul performing various renditions of certain tracks (including several different variations of the title track), live performances, and tour rehearsals (including a blistering version of "Jet). The interviews detailing the arduous but enjoyable recording process is a thrill. To hear Paul as well as people like Geoff Edwards, Christopher Lee, James Coburn and many others give their input. The most entertaining interview by far comes from none other than a man who is to cinema what Paul is to music, the legendary Dustin Hoffman, whose fantastic detailing of his influence on "Picasso's Last Words" is a joy to listen to. Paul and Dustin should collaborate more often.

The booklet and photo spread are excellent bonuses, and this is an album all music fans need to have.

As far as Paul McCartney's career away from The Beatles was, this was good it gets. The cd is great from Top to Bottom and a classic rock cd and deserves a spot in any classic rock collection. Truth be known when I was much younger 17; me and my friend would have a contest who could roll one the best before Paul could say Let Me Roll It in my most favorite tune on the cd, but it was an album back then.

Still yourself... and listen to this fine work by Fernando Ortega. As you listen and think of excellent and noble things you will experience Grace and Peace in your world-weary soul. In fact if you see Fernando's name on it - - buy it. Like all of Fernando Ortega's music, The Shadow of Your Wings: Hymns and Sacred Songs does not disappoint!

A Most Relaxing and Peaceful Collection.......2007-07-01

This album was my first introduction to Fernando Ortega, and I'm absolutely hooked now. This has to be one of the most peaceful and relaxing collections I have ever heard. The melodies are beautiful and the words are so simple and pure (most are direct quotes from scripture). I even use it in my 3 year-old son's bedroom for lullabies. These songs make you think and reflect on God and His Son. I particularly like how Fernando blends scriptures from the Old and New Testaments into one song (Let the Words of My Mouth). I am an oncology nurse, and at the end of a stressful work day, I can listen to this in my car, and I am instantly refocused & refreshed. I wholeheartedly recommend this album - you won't regret it!

A Deeply Worshipful Album.......2007-02-24

I have grown to love Fernando's work. As I get older, I enjoy his music--it really draws me into God's presence, especially as I'm reading the Word or praying. Not all Christian music does that for me, but Fernando's does.

This album is wonderful, its pensive, thoughtful. I really sense that Fernando means what he says, that he's deeply into the music and not just creating another CD.

I really recommend this CD, it really helps draw you into the heart of God.

This was one of those records I kept thinking about buying as a teenager but never got around to it. Should've bought in the 70's because I am enjoying it now.

Band on the Run is much better.......2007-06-18

This is far from McCartney's best. In fact, only five of these songs really stand out to me one way or the other. The best songs are easy to pick out: My top pick is the New Orleansy hit Listen to What the Man Said, followed by the album's only two rockers (Letting Go, Rock Show). On the bad end are Spirits of Ancient Egypt, which is just idiotic, and the dull ballad Call Me Back Again. Actually, a lot of these songs are ballads, and rather forgettable ones at that (Love in Song, You Gave Me the Answer, Medicine Jar, Treat Her Gently/Lonely Old People), but at least none of them are odiously bad. I'm not an expert on Paul's solo career, but I will say that Band on the Run leaves much more of an impact.

A stellar album!.......2007-06-18

What a great album! 30 years after, you still can listen in a row to all these great songs. This album, mostly recorded in New Orleans, has a special touch and was the foundation for the 75-76 tour that would bring the Wings around the world and take them to the top.

My 2 favorites: "Magneto And Titanium Man" and "Listen To What The Man Said"!

If you like the best hits of the Wings, go and buy it, you won't be disappointed!

One of Paul's best!.......2007-01-05

This is still one of my favorite McCartney albums. i bought this when it first came out, and liked every song!(which is unusual). in a time when Paul was writing sugary stuff, this effort was pretty darn good! great songwriting. it's like he actually had something to say, instead of frivolous stuff! Love in song, and rockshow are two examples of this great album. i feel like letting go, is another song which ROCKS THE HOUSE!! a great one to listen to any time of day!! Highly Reccomended!

A Musical Trip Down Memory Lane.......2007-01-05

Growing up I was a big fan of Paul McCartney and Wings. I was a little young to know or understand his music during the Beatle years so Wings was my first exposure. This CD brought back a lot of memories spent listening to the radio on a warm summer day without a care in the world. I am especially partial to Magneto and Titanium Man. Although the song is lyrical and fun, its melody and words hearken back to a more carefree time that we all wish to relive. The mastering of the CD was well done and the music was fairly dynamic when compared to other versions of songs from that era. I've definitely enjoyed this CD and have since begun searching out other recording from that era.

Many gems (and not all of them are rockers or silly).......2007-07-10

As an "I was there" Beatles-holic and later McCartney and Lennon fan (with and without Wings) - I can only agree with all the rave reviews about the performance, the selection on this set, and the great recording, too.

I have the LP with "Maybe I'm Amazed" and several live Wings concerts from my music days, on reel-to-reel tape, and over the years I have returned to a good solid (or melodious) set of McCartney crooning and rocking and sometimes even impersonating/acknowledging other greats. (On this tour, he did Elvis, Dylan, and Paul Simon I do believe; it's not been often mentioned, but there's an interesting rendition of "Richard Cory" on this CD.)

I've been programmed to love all the silly love songs, and all the basic rock and roll, as well as the classic ballads of Paul McCartney. They're all here. The only thing I'd add from my own first-reaction to listening through this concert (having been accustomed to a shorter version I taped years ago from a special television-FM simulcast "Wings Across America" special) -- There is one song which I'd not heard with this crystal-clarity, sweetness, and goosebumps of nostalgia: Bluebird. The tone and beauty of the guitar sounds in just those first few seconds reminds some of us of what an awesome balladeer McCartney was, even while he was busy being a Beatle and then post-Beatles rocker. (On the TV special McCartney recounts how a guitarist once asked him why he needed to go out on the road, being Paul McCartney and all.... McCartney said he needed to keep moving, to see that road again, and the guitarist replied, "Man, if I was Paul McCartney I'd *buy* that road!". :-) The long and winding....

The classic McCartney and Wings Concert. McCartney, a taste of his roots, and some great music, well-recorded- "a splendid time is guaranteed for all". (paraphrasing Sgt. Pepper, whose band turned 40, or 60, last month)

WINGS AT THE PEAK OF THEIR DECADE LONG FLIGHT (they show the world they can rock, too!).......2007-06-21

Wings Over America (1976) was originally released as a triple album, went to number one on the charts, and is the crowning glory of Paul McCartney's post-Beatles band, Wings (they released two more albums, then folded). This version of Wings includes includes Paul, Linda, Denny Laine, Jimmy McCulloch, and Joe English. Paul has said this was the best Wings lineup of them all. The album includes 28 songs on 2 discs, and you pretty much get the best of Wings, plus 5 Beatles songs. All sound great, and most are true to the studio versions. The biggest treat is this fantastic version of Maybe I'm Amazed. This is the best ever recording of the song, and it rocks! Speaking of rocking, there is plenty of that to be found here, too. If you thought Wings was only all about silly love songs, you're in for a nice surprise. Right from the start, with Venus And Mars/Rock show and then Jet, they come out rocking. Let Me Roll It and Medicine Jar rock, too, then Call Me Back Again features some of McCartney's legendary throat-shredding vocals (think Oh! Darling). It sounds 10x better here than the studio version on V&M. The Long And Winding Road and Live And Let Die sound very good here, too. Then Wings goes into an acoustic set of 5 songs, including Blackbird, Bluebird, and of course, Yesterday, which sounds great, and brings the house down, as usual. Denny Laine sings Go Now, a song from his days with The Moody Blues, with backing vocals from Paul and the rest of the band, and that's good. Then they all run through Wings' hits, My Love, Listen To What The Man Said, Let 'Em In, Silly Love Songs, and Band On The Run. Every one sounds great, and some even sound better than the studio versions. Time To Hide, Beware My Love, Letting Go, Hi, Hi, Hi, and Soily are all wide open rockers, and believe me, this band can rock. With McCartney and guitar whiz-kid Jimmy McColloch leading the way, Wings rips right through these songs, rocking like they really mean it! Great stuff. If you're a fan of Wings, and their very special place in rock history, Wings Over America is essential. It's great music all the way through, and a performance documentary of a time when Paul McCartney and Wings were on top of the world, as they were setting attendance records in the stadiums and arenas across America.

Best concert recording by Paul.......2007-06-21

I went to the Wings over America concert in May 1976 in Atlanta. I paid $7.50 for a seat in the back of the stage.......I was lucky to get tickets!!
We just went wild when the light fell on McCartney for the opening song Venus and Mars/Rock Show....and the brass section for Jet was JUST wicked. Great opening for anyone's concert !!!

During my concert someone walked up to the stage, and threw Jelly beans at McCartney while he was playing "Yesterday" which hit the strings.......and McCartney said "quit it" One of those moments that I will rememmber always.......what an arse that guy was for doing that.

The strongest songs are "Let me Roll it", "Sprits of Ancient Egypt", "Maybe I'm amazed", "Medicine Jar", "Letting Go", "Hi, Hi, Hi".
"Soily" is one of the best endings for anyone's concert.......he just screamed his lungs out for this rocker.....which is made to last with the echo.

Listening to "Live and Let die" is fun......but the explosions are not really heard on the recording. Imagine....I was looking through bincolars at Paul playing piano.....and the whole piano looked like it blew up!! I was in shock....and so was the audience. Now it is old hat....we expect those explosions....but back then, it scared us....and you can hear from the crowd thier expressions on the explosions "Live and let die"........bang!!

The Paul's bass playing on this recording is simply amazing....as it was listening to it live. The new Wings members at the time Jimmy McCullough blazed his way on the guitar, and Joe English was a powerful drummer.

One of my complaints about this album, is that they never listed the concert site for each of the songs.....I always wondered if my concert that I went to see made it to the record.
Expensive CD......but well worth it to McCartney and Wings fans.

One Of The Greatest Live Albums Ever Made........2007-03-11

Paul McCartney andhis post-Beatles trifecta Wings truly hit their zenith during their 1976 tour. Appearing onstage for the first time in 10 years, Paul went on the road with the best lineup the ever changing group ever had, a four piece team of crack musicians (including know mainstays Denny Laine and his late wife Linda) and a renewed sense of energy that allowed Paul to reconnect with his fans in a great manner.

"Wings Over America" was the tremendously successful album the band released to commemorate the tour. Without question, it's one of the best live albms ever. From the opening medley of "Venus & Mars", "Rock Show" and "Jet" to the closing "Soily", this album is full of life and energy that only Paul can proivde. He rocks out on "Lady Madonna","Live And Let Die", "Listen To What The Man Said" and "Silly Love Songs", shows his tender side on "Maybe I'm Amazed" (this version was a hit single) and "My Love", and relaxes and lets loose on a fantastic acoustic set that includes great versions of "I've Just Seen A Face" and "Yesterday".

The rest of the band is ace. Denny Laine and Jimmy McCulloch are equally gifted and talented axemen, and they provide some great guitar work here, especially on "Let Me Roll It". Linda is in fine form and is nowhere near as bad as just about veryone has made her out to be. Joe English rocks out on drums, and the accompanying horn section add an extra punch to the performed songs.

Though Paul has released superior live albums as a solo artist ("Tripping The Live Fantastic", "Paul Is Live", "Back In The U.S."), to hear Wings in their peak, this is the only official documentation of just how great they were, and it's worth evey penny.

Most albums, you can listen to every so often but spend most of their lives in the box. This one has been spinning on my turntable since it came out, even squeaking through my 8-track (in the seventies) and it is one of the few albums I just never get tired of listening to. For such an early live album, the sound is excellent. And I remember when it came out, and there were THREE records in it--WOW. If I remember right, this was the most expensive album I'd bought up to that time, and it was worth every penny. Listening to it, one feels as if they are transported back in time to a seventies rock show, with all its enthusiasm and energy. Wings was no Beatles, but it was a great band in its own right, and the mix of songs on this album is a perfect blending of Beatles songs, McCartney solo efforts, and Wings classics. And it all works.

Lovely sounds, the band obviously having a great time, playing well together to an energized audience. One listen to this live classic will take you right back to the great days of arena rock when one of the greatest musicians of all time came to America and gave it a special show.

Argentina-born, California-based Gustavo Santaolalla helped shape the rock en Español movement by producing Mexican bands Molotov and Café Tacuba , and Colombian singer Juanes. In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side.

The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I loved the movie and the music. However, I'm very disappointed to discover that I cannot get the CD to copy to my iPod. This is a pet peeve of mine - I buy the music, I should get to listen to it on whatever device I choose.

This album is a mixture of the instrumental theme, which is incredibly beautiful and haunting, and some very solid country songs. I was surprised by how good the other songs were (you still have to like country music, though). There are only two songs that I don't like at all, and those are the two by Rufus Wainwright - one a cover of "King of the Road" (originally by Roger Miller). They are great demonstrations of him at his most nasal and whiny. It sounds like he is a French guy holding his nose and singing too slow. It's too bad, because they are good songs otherwise. I guess if you like him, you're golden; but I can't stand these versions. Fortunately, the rest of the disc is really good.

I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the music in the film, except for in the most intense of scenes. Perhaps this is why I was so, completely, disappointed with this soundtrack. I felt that if it did even half of what the film did for me it would be a worthy buy. My friends, this soundtrack is shat. It's mostly country and folk, which I am plainly not into. If you like these things then check this out - if not, turn away.

Paul McCartney might not have been the coolest or most cosmic ex-Beatle, but none of his former bandmates could touch his knack for creating perfect pop singles. Say what you will about their "lack of depth," but the 12 songs on Wings Greatest considerably brightened AM radio playlists during the 1970s, and most of them have actually improved with age. International edition of this collection originally released in 1978 (domestic version is long out-of-print) after London Town gave McCartney another huge hit, Wings Greatest rounds up McCartney's greatest hits from 1971 to 1978 which means it skips 'Maybe I'm Amazed' but touches on Ram. The main strength of this collection is that it contains many hits that never appeared on any album, and these are among McCartney's very best solo singles, the eccentric domesticity of 'Another Day', 'Junior's Farm', the Bond anthem 'Live and Let Die', the pile driving 'Hi Hi Hi', and 'Mull of Kintyre', a Scottish-styled folk ballad that was his biggest hit in England. And yes, it's fair to peg these as McCartney successes, since some of them were billed as McCartney, not Wings, and as such, this record is a great overview of McCartney's first decade of solo recording, containing many of his very best solo tunes. WINGS GREATEST contains' two songs that are not Wings tracks "Another Day," and "Uncle Albert." And for some reason Paul left off "Listen To What The Man Said," a 1975 Wings # 1 hit, (he did include it on later compilations). He also left off two more USA top ten hits "Helen Wheels," and the live 1977 version of "Maybe I'm Amazed-(which can only be found on the pricey "WINGS OVER AMERICA" live album). Paul must consider all 1970-1985 singles to be wings--even though technically Wings recorded from 1971-1981, for on his Wingspan collection from the late 1990s, he also mixes solo and wings tracks. Regardless, this is a worthwhile collection, there is not a "Hey Jude," or "Yesterday," in this collection, but in fairness to Paul--the 1970s were quite different from the 1960s. And Paul come in 2nd only to Elton John, for the most top 40 hits on Billbard during the 1970s.

I love the songs in this collection. I just can't stand the recordings. The songs sound distant and thin. They lack any kind of depth. I like to feel as if I am right there in the studio on the original take, with each of the instruments jumping out in clear detail. GH collections seem to fall into this pitfall. Re-recordings often seem to loose that extra something in the process. You'll do better buying the original tracts.

Now if you axe me, and plenty of folk what have a striking interest (as opposed to a passing fancy) in compilation albums do now and again, then I am quick to admit that this here Wings Greatest Hits album is quite possibly the greatest Greatest Hits album ever pressed on to a disc of plastic. I say that unabashedly because the sum total of all the hits lined up end to end would probably represent at least, and clearly, eleventy zillion singles sold. That. My fab four fan friend, if quite impressive.

The year was 1978, the Disco Era was quickly burning itself in to oblivion, and Wings was still churning out the monster hits one after another (almost as much as Abba) and we were all thinner, our hair was thicker, and the world was our clam... or oyster, whichever the case may be for each person who reads this of their own free will. If you are being forced to read this under duress, then no oysters or clams for you. McCartney was still steamrolling right along and we were all paying attention to what he had to say... unlike these days when his voice is sadly lost in the growing number of younger (less talented) individuals being fronted by record companies.

Me and Mama like to put this one on any time the Huckabees are getting ready to let loose with some good ole' style home fun, i.e. a greased pig chasing contest or a spring cleaning, or a tree trimming bonanza, or a cemetery cleaning and all day dinner on the ground. Whenever we got us work to do, we put this on and it puts us in the best mood possible to get the work done. The songs are all hits, even the one the mildly-retarded record executives decided to not release in the US (i.e. Mull of Kyntire) even though it was the biggest thing McCartney ever did on the other side of the pond. Their mamas must have hit them one too many times over the head with a rolling pen or some such. How can anybody make a bonehead move like that at the peak of a musical odyssey like Paul McCartney's?

The only bad thing about this here album is that it is only 12 tracks in length and fails to include "Maybe I'm Amazed" which, if you ask me, and as you already know - lots of folks do - it obviously should have been included because it was one of the biggest hits.

Another thing I gots to warn you about is that odd lookin' cover art. See, if you get this here album and take it home and have a good long look at the cover art, then you are going top have dreams about that photograph. I did for years. That statue woman kept popping up in dreams when I least expected it and pestered me in my sleep. I sure enough wish they had used a different image because there is something about that particular image what disturbs me to no end.... But the music is great. Buy it, listen, rave with the rest of us.

While not quite as exemplary of the Boston quintet's '70s sound as Toys in the Attic or Rocks, Get Your Wings was impressive both in terms of its material and its measurable improvement over Aerosmith's debut. The first of the great Aero albums.......2007-05-30

Along with the two follow-ups, this is the best Aerosmith there is! This is a powerful document of blues-influenced hard rock, the kind of music Aerosmith helped set the standard for. Surprisingly accomplished for being only their second album, this is chock full of good songwriting, heavy melodies, and the masterful guitar work of Perry and Whitford.
There are absolutely no clunkers here and things don't really even settle down but for the melancholy Seasons of Wither, and it is one of their best slow songs. The bitchin' Woman of the World is pure Perry delight and the classic rock staples like the stinging funk of Same Old Song and Dance and the homage with a little extra of Train Kept A Rollin' demonstrate that this band not only recognized its influences but was more than willing to pass the torch to a new generation of rock disciples.
The only real difference between Get Your Wings and the next two albums is the production values; the more money the band made, the better sounding the albums became. Still, the songs are top notch and the band sounds as tight and white-hot as they ever were at the height of their reign during the latter half of the decade. Get Your Wings is essential Aerosmith.

I'm not an Aerosmith fan, and probably never will be. But Get Your Wings strikes me as an improvement over the debut, and probably their best album of the 70's (though it's a tough call between this and Rocks).

"Same Old Song and Dance" is a great way to open an album. We've all heard the song, and now we can hear the song with a slightly extended opening riff section. Yup, the version of the song on this album is a bit longer than the one radio stations play.

Then you have "Lord of the Thighs" which is just a really good song. It stands out with the vibrating effect going on in the background. "Spaced" rules. Best vocal melody on the album. "Woman of the World" is a typical Aerosmith rocker. Pretty good one, though.

After that, "Train Kept a Rollin" is probably my favorite song on the album. I've heard other versions, but this one strikes me as being the best. It really features a crunchy guitar riff at just the right speed. "Seasons of Wither" is another song worth mentioning, for its overall eerie tone and atmosphere.

Solid listen for hard rock collectors.

Still not as good as that first album.......2007-02-20

Same Old Song And Dance, Lord Of The Thighs, Seasons Of Wither are here, I can't deny that those are 3 of their best. Yet, I still think the debut has more energy and is a better album, although the production and sound quality on Get Your Wings is a lot better,but they sound like they're trying too hard here and are IMO in a sophomore slump. they'll be back though.

I was never really too hip on the album when it first come out and is my least favorite of their first four. Train Kept A Rollin' on this cd is one of the best versions I have ever heard and in itself is worth 5 stars, but the rest really never took hold of me. I own it and listen to it every once in a while.

I owned this record as a teenager and haven't heard it in a long time. It was like becoming reacquainted with an old friend. Hadn't heard a lot of these songs in years. Brought back a lot of memories. I think this is the only album where the members of WINGS actually sing lead vocals. I enjoy the diversity.

As with many Macca albums, this is patchy. There are fantastic songs, such as 'warm and beautiful', a gorgeous piano ballad. 'Let em in' is just genius. Catchy and original. 'Silly love songs' has received much flack, but is a clever soft rock song, with a great driving bass line. 'Beware my love' is the only rock song on here. It is very good, except Linda is doing out of tune harmony vocals, that really take away from the main melody. Linda also sings lead on 'cook of the house', and this has to be the most dire recording in the Macca catalogue. She is out of tune, the melody is non existent and the lyrics are awful. I also find Denny's 'Time to hide' tuneless and boring. It is a hit and miss album.

The bass player in this band is sick!.......2005-12-18

1976's "Wings at the Speed of Sound" displays a McCartney who is experimenting with new sounds as he always had; in this case, one of the new sounds is disco. The fact that there is virtually no hard rock pretense on this album rubbed a lot of narrow minded rock critics the wrong way. These are the sort of people who don't find any value in a Burt Bacharach composition. Even the rocking "Beware My Love" is more a rock/disco hybrid; sort of Paul's punchy answer to Donna Summer's "Could It Be Magic". The pop side of McCartney was just as honest a part of him as the rock side. And "Speed of Sound" is far more honest in its disco influence than any of the songs rock acts put out post-Saturday Night Fever, in which they threw on generic disco bass just to score a quick hit. Every bass line on this album is pure McCartney, which brings us to "Silly Love Songs". The one thing that everyone compliments "Silly Love Songs" on is Paul's superb and funky bass-line. Yet, so many critics want to still dismiss the song. It goes to show you, how underappreciated bass is as an instrument. The bass is the driving instrument here; it's the main hook. Saying you like the bass on "Silly Love Songs" but not the song is like saying you like the guitar on "Foxy Lady" but not the song. And I think it's more disingenuous of an artist to embellish a mid-tempo rock song with a timely bass-line (like The Stones did with "Miss You", when they clearly didn't dig disco), than a musically eclectic artist like Paul McCartney, who whole-heartedly embraces the many aspects of the music while gifting it with individualistic touches. Paul experimented with disco bass and took it to a new place; he had already created the standard disco bass-line back on "1985" (the last track on "Band on the Run"). That song was released in 1973, before anyone even heard of disco, yet Paul is already groovin' to that beat. Paul plays up the funky side of his bass playing throughout "Speed of Sound". Even a bit in his song writing; "She's My Baby" sounds like the kind of easy-funk Stevie Wonder knocked out. And what's wrong with Linda's vocals on "Cook of the House"? It's just a fun novelty song and her singing suits it. If she was the keyboardist in some punk or indi-rock band, no one would complain about her limited range. And yes, this is the Wings' album that has a lot of songs from the other Wings guys. But don't believe the hype; they're not the best songs, but neither are they crap. All the songs are pretty tuneful. "The Note You Never Wrote" (sung by Denny Laine, but written by McCartney) is especially nice with a stark and moving production. "Wings at the Speed of Sound" isn't going to rock your world; it's just an enjoyable, top-notch, musically impressive pop record. And what's wrong with that?

The hipsters are finally coming around.......2005-12-11

For years I have heard/been told to avoid AT THE SPEED OF SOUND, because, afterall, McCartney actually 'allowed' the other members of Wings proper to have space on the album. I'm kicking myself for being so easily duped by those supposedly 'in the know.'

First and foremost, this is not a McCartney masterpiece, like RAM is, or BAND ON THE RUN, or FLOWERS IN THE DIRT, or McCARTNEY, or CHAOS AND CREATION IN THE BACKYARD or VENUS AND MARS. No, the lyrics are not as relevant as those aforementioned albums, and yes, other members of Wings get the spotlight, but in the end, AT THE SPEED OF SOUND is thoroughly enjoyable taken on its own merits.

There are several hidden and long lost McCartney gems found here. It's a sin that the absolutely rocking, throaty and gutsy "Beware My Love" has been forgotten by Paul when it comes time for things like the WINGSPAN album, which looks back at old career highlights. "Warm and Beautiful" is a melancholy McCartney ballad that ranks up there with his best '70s work, and I defy anyway to not listen to "She's My Baby" and not have it in your head for the next week or so.

Elsewhere, I really enjoyed the contributions of the other Wings members. Linda McCartney is quite enjoyable on the appealing "Cook of the House," where you can tell that Paul is playing upright bass. Take it for what it's meant to be, and it's great. Longtime Wings member Denny Laine shines here too, on the rocker "Time to Hide" and McCartney's own "The Note You Never Wrote", both of which I play just as much as the McCartney-sung tracks found on this album. Drummer Joe English surprisingly shows he's the second best singer in Wings with the very cool "Must Do Something About It" (also written by Paul), and Jimmy McCulloch contributes the airy and still fresh sounding "Wino Junko."

After all the years of being told to avoid this album, I should have looked at the facts. It was a #1 album for a very long time in 1976, sold loads of copies, and had two huge #1 singles in "Silly Love Songs" and "Let 'Em In." Only recently have I really appreciated the value of these two singles in the McCartney cannon. The latter song is just really cool---sublime and addictive in its presentation. And Paul's right...what exactly is wrong with a silly love song or two? "Silly Love Songs" is great based on the fact alone that it's Paul shouting out a big "F... you" to the critics (not literally, but you know what I mean.) I'll say this---these two singles hold up way better than anything John Lennon did after the IMAGINE album, and I go back to this Wings album more than, say, John's WALLS AND BRIDGES. So yeah, it's nice to see (from reading articles on the internet and overall chatter amongst those rediscovering the solo work of the individual Beatles) that the so-called hipsters are finally coming around to this album and some other forgotten McCartney works (like RED ROSE SPEEDWAY, which I just rediscovered myself).

Taken on its own merits, AT THE SPEED OF SOUND is highly enjoyable and well worth the money. Another highlight is the fact that Paul's awesome bass work is mixed pretty well up to the front on these tracks, and it really adds to the overall punch of the album. Bonus track "Sally G" (the b-side to the hit Wings single "Junior's Farm") is yet another long lost McCartney classic, increasing the value of this purchase.

Digitally Remastered, not improved?.......2005-10-21

For some reason, most of the 1970-1990 McCartney/Wings catalogue is now available in two versions: the Capitol CDs and the British remastered "McCartney Collection".

The British CD's offer, in many cases, more bonus tracks than the Capitol CD's, on this release they are the same though. Why not include Junior's Farm???

The remastering of the British series is, to my ears, NOT a bonus. The signal has been compressed in such a way, that the average level is louder than on the Capitol CD's, although the peaks are not. The balance has changed: low frequencies have been boosted, resulting in a somewhat muddy sound and a less focused midrange. This has also affected the stereo image. To me, the Capitol CDs are sonically superior and closer to the original LPs.

I found the remastered sound a disappointment, not doing justice to the obvious care that went into the original production!

You could trawl the rock & roll archives all the way back to the start and never find an album quite like Red Rose Speedway. Which is not to say that it's great. Just that it's... weird. Though it's a Wings album, it's entirely irradiated with Paul McCartney's personality--to the extent that virtually the entire band left him while attempting to rehearse for the supporting tour, claiming they couldn't operate in his huge, overbearing shadow. You can see where they were coming from. Red Rose Speedway, right down to the cover shot of Macca with a rose in his mouth, is about Paul McCartney, specifically his unique ability in the '70s to pump up slight, pretty songs to the scale of "Hey Jude," seemingly unaware or unworried that that didn't necessarily make them as good as "Hey Jude." The high spot is the saccharine sauciness of "My Love," a lurching soft-focus ballad about his wife's sexual excellence. The rest of it--lazy, lushly produced rock, sometimes sweet, sometimes just cloying, but always unmistakably Macca--is worth hearing if just to ponder: "What the hell did he think he was doing?" --Taylor Parkes

Yes,Linda was the one who wanted the mullet,at least that's what I read once. Anyway,RRS is another effortless showcase of Macca's musical genius.
"My Love"-another great love song off the assembly line.

"Single Pigeon"- both songs for those who participate in the male-female conflagration that is also known as marriage. It appears that the ideal couple that Paul and Linda were could also throw some fists once in a while.The Abbey Road-like medley...it's all here. McCartney showing us all how it's done.Someday,Macca will get his due.I was a Lennon-Harrison guy before,but I am beginning to see just how much McCartney propelled the Beatles along,especially in the later years.In a limited sense,Macca WAS the Beatles.

Getting Your Wings........2007-05-05

Not a great album, but one with a few hidden treasures and worth a listen. Wings were on the verge of bigger and much better things. This was the beginning of their successful run in the charts going all the way to #1.

1. Big Barn Bed - A stomping and raucous effort that hinted Wings stadium rock prowess.

2. My Love - Overplayed ballad that was a #1 hit for Wings.

3. Get on the Right Thing - Picked up where he left off from on RAM. Fun pop song.

4. One More Kiss - Sappy love song.

5. Little Lamb Dragonfly - Beautiful acoustic based song.

6. Single Pigeon - A charming little song, I like it.

7. When the Night - A gospel sounding number. Brilliant vocals from Paul. Nice harmonies from the band.

8. Loup (1st Indian on the Moon)- experimental and dispensible.

9. Medley: Hold Me Tight/Lazy Dynamite/Hands of Love/Power Cut - A clever ending medley of songs. I will single Hands of Love it is a killer and should have been a single, its a pleasure to listen to. This medley on a whole ends the album on a hopeful note but goes nowhere near Macca's medley on the end of Abbey Road, which many think he was going for here.

OK, any Wings fan must pick up this album, cuz the first side is quintessential; however, Paul makes one of his few missteps as Wings frontman for the ENTIRE second half. Fortunately, the 4 bonus tracks from around the same time period resurrect the listener's eardrums, and remind us of Paul's typical standards of excellence.

Big Barn Bed -- A catchy rocker which showcases much of the energy Wings would channel in their following album (Band on the Run). Paul and the band scream and wail about sex, with a great hook chorus that never lets go. You pretty much have to get out of your seat and dance to this one.

My Love -- For whatever reason, Paul threw away all that energy, and now showcases an exquisite ballad about Linda, SMOTHERED with gorgeous orchestration. This is GOOD slow Macca, as opposed to the later half of the album.

Get On The Right Thing -- This a catchy rock song, with Wings' voices making it all come together (and make you sing along too). The lyrics don't make any sense, but that never stopped Paul! ;) You'll thump your foot to this one for sure

One More Kiss -- This is Paul's silly side, i.e. You Gave Me The Answer and Baby's Request. And, like those other later titles, it is quite endearing and likeable. A little bit of country twang here sonically.

Little Lamb Dragonfly -- Haha, this is it! This is probably Wings' second-best song (first would be Maybe I'm Amazed). This song = utmost beauty. A long, mystical dip into the afterlife, the lyrics here are Paul's best out of any song. Definitely worth the meager price you have to pay :)

Single Pidgeon, When The Night, Loup, Medley -- HORRIBLE! Abysmal. Evidently Paul overexerted himself lyrically, sonically, melodically, ANYTHINGcally in the first side of the disc. All 4 of these songs bite. Paul gets a quite unmusical, short phrase, and repeats it over and over again all throughout Single Pidgeon, When The Night, and Medley -- as I mentioned earlier, this is BAD slow Paul, and casts darkness over the entire album. Do yourself a favor and NEVER listen to this trash.

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, the Bonus Tracks come and renew the listener's liking of Sir McCartney.

C Moon -- A singable reggae jive. Great, with a cute kid's choir.
Hi, Hi, Hi -- Sensual, suggestive lyrics line this hard rocker. Reminds us of Wings' ability to rock.
The Mess -- A catchy rocker with nonsensical lyrics
I Lie Around -- Vaudeville, but lacking. Not bad though

And that wraps up the album. Definitely worth picking up for the outstanding first half and C Moon and Hi,Hi,Hi. ALso, the cover is trippy and gritty, I love it.

Paul's Best.......2006-11-30

This Wings line up was the best ever and the writing on this album is Paul's best as a solo in my opinion. It has aged very well. Band on the Run and Ram seem a little light weight to my ears now and all three of those albums were favorites of mine as a teenager. Red Rose is just a classy album. It only has one bad song and anyone who loves the album knows which one I'm talking about.

An Epic Journey!.......2007-07-03

Thanks to s friend at my college for constantly bugging me to check out Symphony X, I have become a pretty big fan. I was able to get my hands on a copy of what many call their masterpiece "The Divine Wings Of Tragedy!" I'll be honest, this album in my opinion is one of the most epic pieces of art I have ever heard; and for me, ranks right behind "The Odyssey" as my favorite Symphony X album.

1. Of Sins And Shadows - This is just an amazing way to begin an album. Harmonizing vocals of heavy and rough, mixed with a higher tone make for a very melodic feel. The backing choir vocals also give it a very Bohemian feel (very Queen like). Awesome guitar work, tying the whole song together. Amazing! 5/5

2. Sea Of Lies - Keeping right with that feel, this track kicks in and pulls no punches. Again just awesome seemless instrumental work by the band fully harmonizing with the vocals. 5/5

3. Out Of The Ashes - I love this song. To me it seems to have a very deep meaning, but has an upbeat rocking way of making that message prominent. The backing vocals really add the element of having an "epic" feel to it, and again the guitar work is top notch. So far the band keeps the perfect score going! 5/5

4. The Accolade - This is the song that sold me on the album. After hearing part two on "The Odyssey" I knew I had to hear what they called part one. I was not disappointed in the least. Starting off slow and melodic, the song picks up steadily throughout. Awesome vocals and powerful lyrics, mixed with amazing instrumental work, make this song alone a classic! 5/5

5. Pharaoh - This is the first song on the album that took me more than one listen to really get into. A heavy tune to pick up where "The Accolade" leaves off. Heavy riffs and deep vocals make this song very prominent. May take a couple listens to like, but is a very cool song. 4.5/5

6. The Eyes Of Medusa - This track keeps right on pace with "Pharaoh." Heavy riffs mixed with very soft, yet very vibrant instrumentals. A lot of what the band does well is seen in this track. Like the previous track, it may take awhile to get into, but this song rocks. Very heavy and very dark! 5/5

7. The Witching Hour - This song is another very melodic output by the band. However, to me it seems just a bit rushed and cramped with a lot of material. Not a bad song at all, but a bit off kilter with the rest of the album. 4/5

8. The Divine Wings Of Tragedy - Ah, the epic of the album. A song in which the rest of the album was merely prepping you for. This song is a journey all its own! I love the beginning of the song esspecially, it is very different from any music you hear today. Very melodic and somewhat soothing! Than, enter the heavy power of Symphony X! Overall, a seven-part epic that will make you stand at attention and truly appreciate hat a masterpiece this album really is! 5/5

9. Candlelight Fantasia - I would call this a bonus track after the masterpiece beforehand. Again, the band shows no signs of slowing down in terms of having a lsting impact in their music! Love the melody and overall tone this song has, adding to an already steller album! 4.5/5

Overall, this album is a MUST HAVE for any and all fans of both Symphony X and/or Progressive Metal! In my opinion this album is one of those rare masterpieces that come along once every 10-12 years! Just pure brilliance!

This is their masterpiece!.......2007-01-10

Symphony X's finest moment is right here, one of those albums where you press play (or whatever your mp3 player uses as a play button) and let it flow. Even the 20-minute plus title track is excellent, and keeps you interested all the way. I'm a fan of power/prog metal, and I own the catalogues of bands like Dream Theater, Artension, Stratovarius, etc. This is my favorite of the bunch.

Symphony X - simply they rock, and this is a must have disc.

For any review to be honest you have to give the good with the bad, so lets get the bad out of the way first. The guitar tones get on my nerves after a while (borrowed straight from Diamond Dave). There is only so much my ear can take of that extremely heavy tone, it would be nice if it was mixed up a bit. Second - Like most bands they tend to take a rif or two, or an idea that has already been done before and make it theirs, For me not a big deal but worth mentioning in a review.

Now the good - Even with my previous comments I think they deserve a 5 and I believe this CD is a must have for anyone serious about their progressive metal collection.

The Vocals are that perfect blend of hard edge without that stupid (Grover) growl crap. This guy can actually sing. In my opinion he is one of the better metal singers - up there with the likes of Dio and the late Carl Albert (Vicious Rumors).

One of the things that makes this band so great is their compositions, with great use of each instrument, a good balance of going outside of the metal box with their use of symphonic instruments and even a hint or two of some modern Jazz. They are one of the better bands when it comes to mixing the Classical with the Metal (thus their name Symphony X).

This is one of those bands like Dream Theater where each of the musicians are top notch. Once this disc reaches your player it will stay there for a very long time.

Another Winner From Symphony X!.......2006-09-06

I have 4 Symphony X albums, and I believe I have found their best music. Divine Wings of Tragedy is surely one of my favorites of the 4 (Twilight in Olympus, The Odyssey, and V The New Mythology Suite being the other 3). Definitely worth all 5 stars. Symphony X makes lots of amazing music. I heartily recommend all 4 titles that I mentioned. They are all very full and rich, and will engage your brain. Very entertaining.

Thus begins Part I of track 8, The Divine Wings of Tragedy, a 20 minute and 41 second extravaganza that on its own rates five stars. Part I is sang a cappella, with almost a barber shop quartet sound, and is followed by a power metal instrumental, the contrast working very well. Five additional parts complete the track, four of excellent vocals and another instrumental that covers more than six minutes. Normally that long of an instrumental would lose me, but there is so much variation here that the entire section holds my interest. This long track seems a harbinger of their greatest work, V: The New Mythology Suite (one of my top five). In fact, the words "Dies Irae" are printed in the insert at the end of the long instrumental, although I do not hear them voiced at any time. However, "day of wrath" (the translation of dies irae) is sang in the last stanza of the song preceding the long instrumental. As you probably know, these latin words are in the first and 11th song on V. Of Sins and Shadows and especially The Accolade are very good cuts also, but overall I cannot give the Divine Wings CD five stars. I can provide no technical reasons for this. It is simply a matter of after having listened to V, or The Odyssey, I am ready to listen to them again immediately. After listening to Divine Wings, the impression is that I want to listen to it again, but not until later. And basically that is how I decide all my four and five star choices.
