5 out of 5 stars A unique blend of poetry, aggression, power and skill!!!.......2003-12-29

I consider this work to be their best.No moronic lyrics here. A heartfelt recording that will stand the test of time. Just listen to the song "Children".

3 out of 5 stars Not near as good or inspired as their self-titled effort.......2003-02-15

I hate it when good bands with a lot of talent suddenly decide to change their sound drastically. That's what Vicious Rumours did with Welcome to the Ball. They took the soaring, melodic, graceful quality out of their songwriting, and opted to go for a hardcore thrash/speed metal sound instead. Big mistake. This album lacks the inspiration and creativity that so characterized their self-titled effort. While there are a couple of good tracks, it's plain to see the magic is gone here. But then, if you like your metal thrashy and pointless, you might like this. Check out their self-titled first. You won't be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars Hot Licks & Dirty Riffs!.......2002-07-14

If you like your rock and roll heavy on the grooves and LOUD then you must check out this album! Don't know why Atello is not yet selling millions of albums, but that's everyone else's loss...this is a solid album with great production that at times recalls Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and some other '80's heavy rock acts, but it quickly establishes its own identity thanks to the solid musicianship of the band, in particular a rock solid rhythm section that is dominated by drummer T Motts. The strong lead vocals and clean yet nasty guitar work are also standouts. Strong on the hard rock as well as the "power ballads", you must this album out if you are wondering where have all the good times gone!

4 out of 5 stars Any of you got Cousin Kevin??.......2005-08-04

I was very thrilled to finally have this in CD version to replace my long playing record version.

However it was shattered a bit when I noticed a song was missing. Turned out that Cousin Kevin has been skipped or wasn't on this CD. I feel cheated! I wonder if this tune has been left out in the other CDs also?? Or just mine?? Hmm.....

Would have been a collector's item if it wasn't for this unfortunate error.

5 out of 5 stars Best Version of Tommy EVER Created!!!.......2005-07-17

I first heard the Tommy by the London Symphony Orchestra when I was in my final year in Junior High School. My music instructor let me borrow the LPs (in 1975).

I loved it, and thought it was one of the best rock operas ever. This remains my view to this day (16July2005). Back in 1975 I was unaware of other versions.

Recently, I was looking to find this version of Tommy. I purchased versions made by the Who and other versions made earlier and later but found them INFERIOR to the London Symphony version.

To experience this rock opera with the best score, arrangement and performance, then this is the version to hear.

This CD is a must have!!

5 out of 5 stars Did I think it was alright ?.......2005-05-17

Haven't heard this album since it was released in the seventies. Might it disappoint after all this time ? Absolutely not, it was most definitely alright !!!

5 out of 5 stars best version ever made.......2005-05-12

I have been listening to this album for at least 30 years. I recently replaced my worn out record with a cd. It has a powerful sound that is missing from both the rock n roll and movie sound track.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR YOUR COLLECTION OF GREAT ROCK WORKS.......2005-04-15

I heard this first on the radio (there was a radio station which played albums at midnight - years
ago) I fell in love with it. I searched for a good time to find it (on vinyl). Years later I found it on
CD. Every few months or so I take it out and play it. It's as good to hear today as it was in the
seventies. I have never tired of it. If you like `progressive rock' (I think you could classify this as
progressive rock) - you will enjoy this forever. If you can find this scarce CD, buy it and put in
your home stereo system (not a `sound card' in your computer, using cheap speakers), turn off the
lights and surrender to the music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars WELCOME TO THE BEST.......2005-09-18

This is one of the best metal records of all time. The writing is superb (both lyrically, and instrumentally). The musicianship is amazing. Carl Albert was without a doubt one of the best metal singers of all time and his performance on this record does not disappoint. Mark McGee and Geoff Thorpe are both great guitar players and their styles melded together as one during this time period. What are you going to say about Larry Howe's drumming... He's a machine! I can't think of a single cut off this album that isn't a "10". From Abandoned, to Strange Behavior, From Raise Your Hands to Savior from Anger one cut better than the last! The only thing better than listening to one of these CD's was seeing this band live, which I had the opportunity to many, many times as I lived in the SF Bay Area through these years. I can't believe this is available again. I horded up multiple copies years ago thinking I would never see this in print again. Digital Dictator, Vicious Rumors, Welcome to the Ball, Plug In Hang On (LIVE), and Word of Mouth are all amazing releases by this highly overlooked, extremely talented band. RIP Carl.

5 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST METAL BAND THAT EVER LIVED!!!.......2005-03-15

I am so psyched that Vicious Rumors albums are now available again. By far the best Metal act in the world. The vocals of the late great Carl Albert are amzing as well as the lead guitarwork of Guitar GOD Mark McGee. I've seen him play with VR, as lead guitarist for ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAMER - Gregg Allman and with others. He is one of the world's greatest players and musicians. Geoff Thorpe still has kept the band going but no replacements can fill the shows of Carl or Mark! If you like serious musicianship and classic metal ala/ Priest/ Sabbath/ Scorpions/ then Vicious Rumors - Welcome to the Ball is a must have. Awesome, awesome, awesome!!!

All I Want Is You To Care ----------- Thanks to the lack of album attribution, as well as inscrutable selection logic and mad sequencing by compiler (and Creation boss and one-album Times member) Alan McGee, novices won't be able to glean much more than a random sense of career highlights from the two CDs of Welcome to the Wonderful World of Ed Ball. As an introduction, it's a delightful journey that leads those not already familiar down a blind alley. The primeval "We Love Malcolm" (a 1978 rewrite of a Television Personalities song by the pre-Times O-Level) follows a 1993 dub track that mixes raggamuffin toaster Tippa Irie into a Scritti Politti song. Whoa! The Times' ingenious mod kernels (1983's "I Helped Patrick McGoohan Escape" and "This Is London") are set next to more modern bits of whimsy (like 1989's scene-ribbing "Manchester" from the acid-synched E Is for Edward) and theatrical ambition ("Up Against It," the title track of an album based on Joe Orton's rejected script for a Beatles movie); among the stranger juxtapositions are a delightful (if badly pronounced) French version of New Order's "Blue Monday" next to eleven endless minutes of Love Corporation's club-pumping "Give Me Some Love." This hodgepodge won't encourage many converts from the vast audience segment that has never encountered Ball's amazing adventures in style, but those who have some idea of his unchartable course will find plenty of times to enjoy
