Album Description
Wildly influential death metal legends SUFFOCATION return with Souls to Deny, their first full length album in nearly a decade. Masterfully controlled yet frightenly intense, Souls to Deny is a truly devastating display of technical death metal. Maniacally complex lead and rhythm guitar acrobatics intermix with dizzyingly proficient drum work, creating complex, savage riff collages. Often copied but never duplicated, SUFFOCATION remains at once intricately technical and immaculately heavy! Crushing brutality from the masters!!

I so didn't see this one coming.......2007-01-29
With Souls to Deny Suffocation have immediately risen to the top of my favourite Death Metal bands. In fact, genres aside, this is the most compelling album I've heard in the last six months album opener Deceit is a punishing, heavy locomotive rumbling down a tunnel to flatten the listener in its path. Suffocation understand the key to making death metal interesting is variation and texture; so to counter brutal tracks like Immortally Condemned, To Weep Once More starts the song off with a slow, steady groove, before quickly changing tempo in the buildup to the middle section when the guitar solos take off amid various changing drum rhythms. The approach is followed on the next tracks Surgery of Impalement and Demise of The Clone both containing intricate guitars seamlessly alternating between heavy palm mutes and tremolo picking topped off by more great solos. Everything is successfully anchored together by the bass, drums and vocal parts. The rest of the albums follow this pattern successfully culminating in a new version of 'Tomes of Acrimony' which, having been poorly recorded first time around, has now been given its due. The production helps the music define itself with every instrument accessible even the lower bass tones and the chemistry between the members is apparent as is their obvious relish in crafting and playing their songs. In fact it's this chemistry that makes the music work so well, each band member knows what to put in the songs to make them work.
Suffocation's legacy has significantly influenced the development of a genre, and I find it interesting that they can reform, be immediately back at the top of their game and in the process trample on the majority of bands they've influenced - I bet Death Metal is glad to have them back and I will definitely be seeking out more of their music.
Quintessential tech death.......2006-09-12
After forming in 1990, Suffocation were one of the first bands to fuse death metal with grindcore and complex song structures to form a completely new subgenre: brutal death metal. If that isn't a big enough accomplishment for the band to brag about, then making "Souls To Deny" in 2004 surely is. This is doubtlessly the band's finest release to date, and it's probably the quintessential technical death metal album.
Every song on this disc is loaded with pounding, crushing rhythms, scorching guitar leads, fret-board smoking riffs, hyper-speed, super technical blast beats, and evil, belching vocals. The walloping album opener, "Deceit," which has buzzsaw riffs and airtight drumming, is a pretty good representation of the album as a whole, but the two best songs on here are "To Weep Once More" and "Subconsciously Enslaved." The former track is highlighted by some Deicide-like bellows of "Father, why have you forsaken me?!", and a fairly long, ripping guitar solo, and the latter features a blistering guitar lead, head-rattling double bass drumming, and two wailing solos. Other standouts include the jackhammering title track, the downright bludgeoning "Surgery Of Impalement," and "Immortally Condemned," which is highlighted by thunderous drums, riffs which might very well melt the skin off your face, and another great, fairly long, mazey solo.
Death metal has rarely sounded this great, and it's doubtful that any band will ever make an album as technical or all around great as this one. If "Souls To Deny" isn't the finest technical death metal album in history, then it surely is the best since Cryptopsy's "No So Vile" was released in 1996. This is absolutely essential listening for all extreme music fans.
three words: oh my word!.......2006-07-14
Suffocation literally knows how to tear it up! they are excellent. do me a favor and release another album, dudes. you really know how to stomp! these guys are wearing size-14 shoes.
Long awaited return is a let down .......2006-04-25
I was thrilled when I heard Suffocation was going to be playing in my area (Long Island) after having been disbanned for about 6-7 years. Suffocation was in top form at The Downtown that night, and they even played two songs from Souls To Deny, which had not been released at that time. They played Deceit and Subconsciously Enslaved. I was pretty impressed at both songs, but since they were brand new, it was hard to get an accurate read on them. When I heard that Suffocation would be releasing a new album, I was very excited.....
SOULS TO DENY left me with mixed feelings. The album doesnt have the greatest sound: Franks vocals seem a little subdued, the drums seem a little sloppy sounding, and the guitar tone is rather thin. It reminds me of a mix of Breeding the Spawn (and its weak production) and Despise the Sun. I've heard some Demo versions of some of these new songs, and the sound on the Demo version was MUCH better. Deceit and Tomes of Acrimony are fine songs, but every other song is a little bland.
Overall, I wouldnt say that Souls to Deny is a bad album - its an average album by a great band.
kings of NYC old-school death metal.......2006-04-17
when most of the originators of death metal come from either upstate NY or Florida, Suffocation represent their hometown of New York City and are one of the only bands from this area that play the old-school style of true extreme death metal. in my opinion, they are right up there with all the original godfathers of the genre, including Morbid Angel, Six Feet Under, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, and Malevolent Creation. I'm glad they decided to get back together after temporarily breaking up for a few years. Souls To Deny is powerful enough and brutal enough to compete with any of the extreme metal albums that have come out within the past few years. they are already hard at work finishing up their next self-titled release for Relapse records, due out late 2006. I'm sure it will be just as intense as STD. I can't wait.
