Excellent death metal even for non-death metal fans.......2007-01-24

As a fan of metal, I consider myself more interested in power metal and non-genre specific heavy metal than any sort of death metal. Recently I got over my hang ups and picked up a few CDs with growled vocals and have really come to love this type of music. I'd say that Demonoid is the first band I've looked into so far though that isn't melodic death metal or folk/viking metal (or otherwise what some might call "soft" death metal, lol), and I was hesitant to buy it on the grounds that the last time I bought a straight up death metal album, I just couldn't listen to it because the drumming was obnoxious and the vocals were way too gross.

I have to say that 'Riders of the Apocalypse' really floored me. I'm glad that the drumming is well done, not even close to the obnoxiously fast snaring of so many other bands in this genre. The guitars and vocals are pure death metal but sound great. The chugging rhythms aren't allowed to chug for too long without being punctuated with a fantastic guitar solo, always well placed and interesting. I've got to say that Wargods is probably the best song, but the whole album is very above average. One of my new favorites. It's excellent driving music, but there's enough standouts here to put this at the top of my list of current favorite CDs, despite the fact that it is death metal, after all, and the songs aren't exactly full of melody.

If you ever wondered what a pure black / death band sounded like, here you have it. Demonoid embraces many elements of said genres to create a pretty good representation of blackened metal, sometimes bringing in a few old-school influences as well. Many well placed tasteful guitar solos add a flavoured texture to the songs, and foreign elements are not used to weaken the material. For example, a female voice is used to narrate a small portion of a song during its conclusion without taking away any ferocity from the material. The drum playing is simply flawless, very busy and focused, with many well executed drum rolls. The production is very crispy and organic, yet the band sounds pretty much in your face with a very "live" feel to it. In a way, it reminds me of God Dethroned. Excellent release, worthy of your attention if you love the more aggressive side of Metal played with class and conviction.

The Riders Are COMING!!!.......2005-01-19

After reading a few great reviews I dedided to pick this one up. WOW, it's quite a stunning release. Generally fast and heavy death metal but not sounding like melodic death metal. It's more like heavy/thrash metal with death vox. I don't want to label too much as I really don't have anything to compaire this one to. It's quite unique. The sound is very good. My only complaint would be a small one that the vocals could be recorded a bit higher in the mix and clearer.

The bottom line is this. If you like death metal in general then this is a must have because its unique, powerful and creative. On the other hand, if you don't like death metal vox much then this might not be for you.

One more thing. Although this is a very heavy release as you would gather from the cover art that perfectly fits the music you should also know this is not senseless speed or harshness. It is a very aggressive but yet done in a classy way and with a good sound.

I won't give 5 of 5 stars because I am not convinced it deserves that but 4 of 5 is definitely reasonable and not a stretch.

Seeing how this album has been out for months now, and I am the first person to review it, it would seem that the metal masses are sleeping on this brilliant release from Demonoid. Demonoid contains members of Therion and Chimaira, but sounds nothing like either. The sound on this album left me speechless at first listen. The opening track "Wargods" starts with a pummeling drum solo followed by a crisp, heavy guitar line and gruff, low vocals. This set the tone for the entire album. This album is extremely heavy and diverse, and at the same time melodic. What's more, the album tells a story. It's the story of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, split into three parts. Tracks 1-3, 4-6, and 7-9 each tell seperate portions of the story. Rather than me imparting the story bit by bit, just read for yourself in the liner notes. Just another incentive to get a "Top 5" metal album for 2004. This easily takes the title for "Best Metal Side Project" ever recorded. Any fan of European metal will not be disappointed by this one.
