Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

Album Description

My Brother's Blood Machine further develops and expands the concepts established in the Coheed and Cambria albums with such recurring themes as the McCloud Family and references to its missing children. The primary difference is that this album is being told from the point of view of a character known as "The Prize Fighter Inferno" a.k.a. Jesse from the story of Coheed and Cambria.

Of the 11 songs on the album, we hear a softer side of Sanchez, enveloped in mellow electronic grooves and gentle compositions. Some tracks adopt dance rhythms while others are hypnotizing in melody and verse.

Not for Outsiders.......2007-03-09

I really enjoyed this album, from the art on the cover, to the tarot card lyric sheets, to the songs themselves. i don't think that i would have loved this album as much as i do, however, unless i was already a Coheed and Cambria fan, and bought it with the knowledge that it was a different story in the same universe. So unless you are a HUGE Co & Ca fan, listen to it before you buy it.

There are some great mysteries of the universe. For example, is there a single unifying theory of physics? Or is there life on other planets? To those I'd like to add one: who thought it would be a good idea to release this rubbish?

On first impressions, this CD looks quite promising. It's a digipak done in fake leather finish with gold embossing. Perhaps it's a Black Metal album. Inside, the lyrics are printed on a pack of tarot cards. OK, perhaps it's a Doom or Folk-inspired album. On the back are a bunch of long winded song names like "Run, Gunner Recall, Run! The Town Wants You Dead!" and "Wayne Andrews, The Old Bee Keeper". Now the smart money is on a Prog Rock concept album. This would have been a good place to stop.

However, this is a review of the music on the CD, not of it's packaging, so I gotta listen to it. Stick in the CD. Press play. Listen to a little bit. Hmm...something's not quite right here. Press eject to make sure I've got the right CD. Yep. Put it on again. Check the lyric sheet to make sure it's not a mistake from the CD pressing plant. Nope. Oh dear...

First track "The Going Price For Home" sounds like the demo track of a Casio keyboard with one of the Bee Gees singing over it. WTF? Perhaps the next track will be better. "The Fight Of Moses Early And Sir Arthur McCloud" has an acoustic guitar and a synthesized violin with one of the Bee Gees singing over it. Yuck! Quick, skip to the next track! Um, OK, so now it's Simon And Garfunkel singing a B-side for "Scarborough Fair" on the most pretentiously named song ever, "Our Darling Daughter You Are, Little Cecilia Marie". Argh! Next track, quick! Damn, that keyboard is back again, this time accompanying the Jackson Five, complete with "Doo doo dah dah" lyrics. The title? "A Death In The Family"...

OK, so the obvious conclusion is that `My Brother's Blood Machine' by The Prize Fighter Inferno is awful, and I'm not going to torture you or myself by describing the rest of the album. This album gets marks for it's packaging, because it's one of the best presented CDs I've ever seen. Apparently it took seven years to record. This is a misprint. It was recorded by a seven year old.

The flip-side of Claudio...highly addicting album!.......2006-12-20

I knew Claudio had a side-project to Coheed and Cambria, but I kind of just dismissed it until the guy at the music store threw it in for a discount at the music store when I bought the Live at Hammerstein. Hesitant of my purchase, I threw it in on the way home from the store and after the first track I wasn't really interested, I wanted to see my beloved Co&Ca live on DVD!

WARNING: GIVE CD A SECOND CHANCE...

On the 3 1/2 hr. ride home from school this break though, I was listening to the whole CD...wow!!! Back in the day (1998-ish) I used to love industrial and trance music like Meat Beat Manifesto and Orbital, since I got into playing electric guitar in 2000 I never listen to them anymore and turned myself into a rock maniac. While this not so much trance or rock, The Prize Fighter Inferno tingles the part of my brain that is not all rock and roll, and some of the tracks -- specifically "Fight of Moses Early..." and "Run, Gunner Recall..." -- show off Claudio's acoustic guitar skill. Some of it sounds a bit amateur, but some of these songs (as the liner notes/tarot cards say) are 7 years old! Most of the songs are well-mastered and put together, and are highly addicting and you'll hear yourself singing the catchy-as-hell choruses of "Who Watches the Watchmen?" and "The Margaretville Dance" much to your own chagrin.

Overall this is a great light album to listen to, as opposed to the in-your-face rock that is Coheed. Even though they're two different genres, the dark subject matter and even some of the melodies are really reminiscent of Coheed...but some of these songs have some extreme bass and are just plain weird to people if they're not used to Claudio's voice, make sure you pump it up in "Who Watches The Watchmen?" and put a hole in your floor from your subwoofer.

What everyone has to remember though, is this is NOT a rip-off of The Postal Service. Like I said before, the clever little tarot cards in the CD case say that this album has been written and recorded over 7 years, which makes some of these songs even older than Co&Ca itself (the tone of Claudio's voice in "The Missing McCloud Boys" is really similar to that of "IRO-bot", which was recorded in the Shabutie days).

To sum it up: You can see where Coheed songs like "Once Upon Your Dead Body" come from...just imagine a couple songs like that, a couple like "IRO-bot", but mostly Claudio lyrics set to Casio-style keyboard beats and acoustic guitar, and you got yourself The Prize Fighter Inferno.

I have a serious problem.......2006-12-12

I can't stop listening to this album. Well, that's not entirely true. I did start listening to Coheed & Cambria after my first couple of listens because I hadn't heard them in a while and got "in the mood." However, aside from that one afternoon where I listened to In Keeping of Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 and Good Apollo, I have had a steady addiction to this album. Normally it wouldn't be a problem, but all of my friends hate it. (Luckily, I can't hear their complains through the headphones) My friends like Coheed and Cambria by the bye. That being said, just because you like Co&Cam, don't expect to like this. The first few seconds of "The Going Price of Home" says loudly "This is NOT Coheed & Cambria, and don't expect it to be!"
I bought and it upon first listen, I found myself repeating and repeating the CD, devouring the lyrics (cleverly places on the back of tarot cards), and annoying my friends with music they cannot stand.
To compare this sound seems a disservice, but for lack of better explanation, I feel I must. I would call it a folksy-Postal Service sound with Bram Stoker style lyrics. My friend always complains that Claudio sounds strikingly similar to Michael Jackson, and in the song "The Margretville Dance," I can't argue with him. Though, that song is one of my favorites. It is electronica and it is folk and it is acoustic and it is indie. I'm pretty sure I even heard a washboard in "Run, Gunner Recall, Run! The Town Wants You Dead!"
Normally, I do not find a album released as a side project taking this much of a hold on me, but I would dare say that this is one of the best albums released in 2006. Still, I would buy this album for "Who Watches The Watchmen?" alone.

The Next Metallica??? Doesnt sound like it to me.......2007-06-07

I first want to start this review off by saying that this band SOUNDS NOTHING LIKE METALLICA!! One day they may be as big as MEtallica, but musically, technically, and stylistically, this band doesnt really resemble Metallica at all, but any way lets get to the album.
With the addition of Ember to Inferno I now have all 3 Trivium albums. This is their first album, and it really shows, not because the songs arent great, but because the sound quality is pretty bad compared to their other albums, and I have to turn my speakers up louder when I listen to it. In my opinion this album may be trivium's best. It is extremely heavy when compared to their most recent album the Crusade. Some of the riffs are brutal, but Trivium uses both guitars to get that harmonizing effect that they are known for, and keeps the riffs intersting. The genre of this band is clearly metalcore for those who are unsure. The riffs in songs like "My Haterd" and "falling to Grey" are clearly punk influenced, but still very metal. The screaming of Matt Heafy is great, and he is also able to get some great clean vocals, which adds a lot to the songs. He is a very talented voicalist, and it shows in some great songs like "If I could collapse the masses", "When all Light dies" and "Blinding TEars will Breeak the Skies".
The guitar playing on the album the only weakness of this album; the soloing, I think is not as good as it would become in later albums. The solos are more wild and crazy metal solos, rather than the technical precision that MAtt and Corey would develop in their next 2 albums.I would also like to mention that the bonus track Demon is awesome and the Decieved from Ascendancy shows the bands development.
This album is almost perfect, other than some sound quality issues, and the not so great soloing, but it is still a great album. I would give it 4 and a half stars, but that is close to 5. If you are not a fan yet, buy this album and see why everyone loves Trivium. If you are a fan, then that is even more of a reason to buy this album.
But just remember this: The Crusade sounds almost nothing like this album, unfortunately, Trivium pulled a Metallica and sold out, well not quite the same way that Metallica did, but they changed their style. This album and Ascendancy are triviums real heavy albums, definitely give this album a listen!

The grutal-echo voice of Fear Factory, the guitars and drums of Metallica and the medieval sound of Manowar!! That how was made this melodic trash metal band called Trivium!

This band's debut on 2003 is SOO COOL!! I never heard anything like this since In Flames's Whoracle.

P.S: This album took 3 years to makin it! So I would say that this is the band's masterpiece.

Cool, but repetitious.......2006-03-07

This is a pretty worthy listen for those into speedy metalcore with fast paced screaming and some melodic breakdowns. Just like your typicial metalcore band, except a little better. Heafy's singing voice is not as whiney as, say, Atreyu. For a debut attempt, they've done a good job.

The problem with this is a recurring flaw found in many albums in the metalcore genre. It's monotonous. It's repetitious. And it lacks creativity to a certain point. The riffs are very fast and catchy. The solos are pretty cool too, and the double bass drumming is a great display of technique, but...it's all the same. The album is almost viewble as one long song, because regardless of the melodic breakdowns, the each song picks up from where the last stopped.

However, with only one major setback to this production, this is definitely worth listening to. It's excellent ear candy, but I recommend listening to it in doses. This is not the album you want in your cd player on the "repeat all" mode while cramming for finals, because it gets repetitious after a while. I don't want to say that, after a good long listen, it's "boring," per se, because it's not. It's just the opposite. Boring would be due to lack of speed and repetition, but this just gets a little annoying after a while.

Masterpiece.......2006-03-06

There is nothing like Trivium. Nothing can compare. Nothing. Zip. Nada. You just can't get that feel of angst anywhere else in the land of Metal.

This is Trivium's first full length cd, and it's on LifeForce records, not RoadRunner Records. This cd has a distinct flavor to it. This cd seems like it has 3 Parts Thrash, and 1 part metal.

Each song is a masterpiece in itself. Definately check it out if you like Trivium. If you are into 80's and 90's thrash and metal, CHECK THIS OUT! If you are into metal, get it. I can't explain in words how good this cd is! Just check it out!

A must have for fans of Goth Metal.......2007-03-24

Well, this album has quickly become one of my favorites in my collection. It combines all the right elements of orchestration, vocals, and metal music. My only complaint is that at times Lady Angellyca's voice can sometimes seem drowned out by the music. Well, I'm simply going to give my ratings for the songs as other reviewers have provided plenty of info about the album.

considering how short the history of Forever Slave, with their first release, Alice's Inferno coming out a mere year and a half or so ago, it is entirely surprising how good this whole album is. at first listen i was not impressed. only one track really caught my attention, and it took several trips through the whole thing for me to begin to appreciate what i had. or maybe it took that long to get to understand their style.

their style is darker than other fem metal groups like Nightwish and Within Temptation (of whom i am a huge fan), not only in terms of their music but also their lyrics which at certain points make no secret of their association, at least nominally, to the occult. rip-roaring drums, death growling vocals and guitars vociferously assert their agreement in this, but yet the light side seems to be tugging at their other shoulder in the guise of violins, orchestral synths and Lady Angellyca's voice which certainly manages to sound angelic at times.

this 'beauty and the beast' arrangement has worked so well for other bands in the past, such as Tristania and Theatre of Tragedy to name some of the better ones, and Forever Slave give it a facelift and their own artistic touches. the result, as i have already stated, is magnificent, but perhaps not immediately apparent.

this should be an essential part in the collection of those who enjoy melodic, transcending metal with a cutting edge and a gorgeous female voice. 5 stars for all around excellence.

Pure Genius.......2006-08-04

Forever slave are a band with many combined talents. Their lead vocalist "Lady Angellyca" consists of great looks and an operatic and semi-operatic voice. The band members are very talented and very symphonic with many neo-classical riffs

As for the music - Well the music is extremely symphonic and never lacks an ensemble instrument. The band is very underground and the album is quite hard to find in some countries. Even though the album is low budget, It has been engineered and programmed professionally.

I was quite surprised to listen to the album because it has death "Opeth-like" vocals too.Lunatic Asylum is a strong opener. The strings are very theatrical, and the symphony actually reflects the mood of the whole album, depending on the way they are played.
There are some machine gun blast beats followed by the best solo in the album. The death vocals are very low, but coherent. Reminisces follows, and the strings are more lighthearted and less embellished. The Gregorian chanting follows every line sung in the choruses, and fits very well. A solo is played with the guitar but carries on with the chorus singing on top.The album is a concept album tellnig the story of a teenager called "Alice" who went crazy and killed her parents. Alice Dies but finds peace.

Tristeza - Tristeza is the only song without death vocals but has a really strong emotional depth and contains very intelligent riffs. It must be heard to be appreciated 5/5

In The Forest - This song surprisably bursts and has a great epic preportion of a mixture between violins and heavy guitaring along with sexy vocals 5/5

"The Letter" - Another experimental song that has very sad elements towards the album's storyline. It contains a part where alice speaks and you always look forward to it because the voice is very cute and lonely. 5/5

Alice's Inferno.......2006-06-27

Wow. I'm a little surprised I am the very first person to review this album, despite the fact it has been released for nearly a year. This is the first album of the Spanish Gothic Metal band Forever Slave, following three demos.

This is a concept album, telling the story about Alice, who's parents have deceased. The lyrical content is all akin to the Gothic imagery and links to Alice's story: about death, despair, darkness, spirits, hell etc. Like a lot of Gothic metal, there is frequent use of male death vocals. The death vocals fit in very well, and all accentuate the `inner demons' of temptation Alice has to face when she is alone. ("Innocent! Alice tortured by Darkness. Innocent! The Shades will get you down!" in Lunatic Asylum for example) Lady Angellyca has a beautiful voice; in the middle of the classical Sharon Den Adel and the operatic Tarja Turunen. The only slight problem is that sometimes her vocals `melt' into the music, so it is difficult to understand what she's singing. There's also Gregorian chanting in Reminisces; a violin, a piano in nearly all songs, and bells provided by the keyboards. Indeed, this album is a heavily textured album with lots of instruments played at once.

This album is very symphonic and I mean VERY. If you thought Within Temptation and Nightwish was symphonic, think again: this album surpasses them all. The symphony plays a bigger role than the guitars in most cases, and it is like the symphony plays the major melodies and the guitars adorn them. That being said, the guitars dishes out amazing solos in Lunatic Asylum (from 2.32 to 3.08); Reminiscences (4.00 to 5.00) and Across The Mirror (3.53 to 4.35). Most of the other `solos' are actually the strings playing with the guitars backing up. Death vocals are featured in the songs Lunatic Asylum, In The Forest, Equilibrium, Circles Of Tenebra, Aquelarre, and The Letter. In Equilibrium there's even some black metal screams. The drums are pummelling, and the bass is extremely well sustained. The songs themselves are clearly very Gothic and atmospheric. Most of them are moody and some are slow (almost like Gothic Doom), with drawn out strings parts, and a lot of eerie diminished chords. The songs are quite long: there are 10 songs and the album is 54 minutes long. It is quite unfair to compare this band to any other bands because their sound is quite unique.

Lunatic Asylum is a strong opener. The strings are very theatrical, and the symphony actually reflects the mood of the whole album, depending on the way they are played. There are some machine gun blast beats followed by the best solo in the album. The death vocals are very low, but coherent. Reminisces follows, and the strings are more lighthearted and less embellished. The Gregorian chanting follows every line sung in the choruses, and fits very well. A solo is played with the guitar but carries on with the chorus singing on top of it.

In The Forest is my favourite song because it's got amazing drumming. There's a combination of sinister chords with a more positive atmosphere. I love the lines "Nymphs start to sing to me. They whisper to me my name. Don't stop, Alice, this symphony! Don't tell my name nevermore," with the death vocals repeating the words "sing to me" and "symphony!" Following this is a beautiful piece of music with the symphony, followed by a slow piano part. Equilibrium is pretty much a `horror type' song all the way through. With the strings being played dramatically, the black vocal screams and the pounding double bass drumming; this is the most desolate song on the album. From the 3.34 mark to the end, the song changes tone into a slow, Gothic doom song.

Circles Of Tenebra makes full use of the symphony and has a recurring melody played in between choruses. At the 4.15 mark a creepy voice comes in, followed by the upbeat chorus. The atmosphere of Dream and Dust is positive, with prominent bells and pianos being played. There is some Latin being sung and this is a more upbeat song. Aquelarre changes mood from Dreams and Dust, reverting back to the gloomy ambience (perhaps because the lyrics speak of rituals and sacrifice). The violin can be heard the most in this song.

At 7.56 Across The Mirror is the longest song and is divided up into many parts. It starts off with a slow doom introduction then proceeds into a grandiose explosion of fast-paced drumming with some classical vocals. In the choruses there are tiny amounts of death vocals, but not enough to be notable. At the 3.15 mark there is a 2-minute solo of guitars and strings, followed by a slow minimalised chorus. The drumming is top-notch in this chorus and very ostentatious and anthem-like.

Tristeza is the shortest song (3.51) and is a very straightforward song, void of death vocals. However the merger of guitars and strings is felt significantly, and there is an electronic beat here and there. The album ends at The Letter, a powerful fast song. I love the violins in this song. As it is the last song, it can be assumed that Alice has died but found peace - from the lines "Your soul is flying a long way from here...Your soul reduced to dust...Today you life is a whisper for the angels".

Overall this is a very good debut album and I can't wait until they release their next album. If you like Gothic metal, doom metal, or symphonic metal then I highly recommend this album. If you like Within Temptation, Nightwish, Sirenia, Leaves' Eyes, Theatre of Tragedy, Epica, After Forever or Tristania, then this album is a must.

With this CD devoted solely to operatic arias--by none less than Giuseppe Verdi, the greatest Italian opera composer of all time--pop crossover phenomenon Andrea Bocelli throws his hat into the operatic ring with the big boys. The hat occasionally fits, and occasionally it doesn't. The beauty of the voice is undeniable, as is the relative ease in all registers. But, regardless of what the engineers do, it is clearly a small voice. For "Celeste Aïda"--Radames's great aria from Aïda--Bocelli opens with fine, as-big-as-possible exclamation and sounds confident; the long diminuendo on the aria's final high B-flat is stunning (whether or not the engineers were twiddling with the knobs, we'll never know). The tenor is more at home with Alfredo's Act Two music from La Traviata; he sings with grace and charm, ending the rarely performed cabaletta (a brief and showy piece that usually follows an aria) with one of the longest, most solid high Cs ever recorded. Elsewhere, there are mixed results: "Di' tu se fedele" from Un ballo in maschera is so free of feeling that it seems digitally produced. A big, unnecessary high D at the close of the Duke's cabaletta "Possente amor" from Rigoletto is screamed, and Bocelli sounds at times as if he's about to collapse from exhaustion during a heavy aria from Ernani. But "Ah si, ben mio" from Il Trovatore is beautiful, as is the Luisa Miller aria; Don Carlo also seems to fit Bocelli well. Needless to say, the singer's fans will certainly want to have this--and it might encourage them to try other recordings of music by Verdi. Newcomers and the curious will find plenty to admire, too. The sound itself remains alluring, and Bocelli has taken steps also towards improving his technique. In short, some nice surprises for the opera lover, and many for the Bocelli fan. --Robert Levine

It is said that from the age of eleven years, Guiseppe Verdi (1813-1901) wanted to write operas. He left his post as organist to study music in Milan, a move made possbile by his patron,Barezzi, whose daughter he eventually married in 1836. Shortly thereafter he composed his first opera 'Oberto" which was so successful that his future seemed secure. However, the death of his wife and two babies some time later forced him into a state of depression. The impressario Mirelli gave him the book 'Nabucco' (Nebuchadnezzar) to read, and he immediately began to write music for it. Therewith he embarked on the career which eventually made him the "Grand Old Man" of Italian opera. In modern slang, he was a "natural".From "Oberto", written in his twenties, to "Falstaff", completed when he was eighty, his characteristic integrity and intensity persisted; as he wrote his 30 operas, his powers of expression broadened and deepened. By the time he wrote 'Aida', commissioned by the Khedive of Egypt, Verdi was 56. 'Aida' is often named as his greatest opera. The live elephants used in the production, the authentic costumes and musical instruments copied from ancient Egyptian tombs made an attractive picture, and his music made a "Celeste Aida" of the whole.
Lets face it; Bocelli is no Pavoratti, and perhaps it was not wise to choose some of the arias associated with tenors of his ilk, but Bocelli makes the best of his talents, which are considerable. And he has done a lot to create interest among young voice students,(male) and as a voice teacher I make use of his appearance and his youthfulness to engage their interest, and he does that!!!!I think his record sales tell the tale.

Excellent Verdi selections. As usual, top tonal quality with excellent breath control. The best tenor to come along with such diversification as to sing just about anything presented to him. A superb choice for the connoisseur of italian operas.

The triumph of mediocrity.......2006-02-04

No, Bocelli is not an awful singer, he is an awful OPERA singer, and it shows here. His colorless, uneducated and bland voice make me wonder why people like him so much. As a baritone in training I'm able to say that my voice teacher's STUDENTS sing much better than this guy.
His tessitura is nowere near adequate for singing any of the arias from Rigoletto, "La donna è mobile" sounds much like a kid would sing it. "Celeste Aida" is one of the worst selections, and one of the most electronically enhanced, as it requires a precise voice placement (which Bocelli doesn't posses) since much of it lies very high in the register, and a heavier, rounder voice; if the role is not adequate for many REAL tenors, it is much less adequate for a pop singer. The "feeling" raving reviewers talk about is nothing more than a voice coming (incorrectly) from the throat, and the "beautiful" high D in "Possente amor" is a beautifully screamed falsetto, the same could be said about "Di quella pira"'s C; what's amazing about all this is the fact that electronic enhancement doesn't make his voice sound better. Some have ludicrously compared him to the likes of Vargas, Domingo, and Corelli, even saying he's better; this is nothing more than ignorance and bad taste.
Maybe his fans are tired of detractors bringing out the big names in their defense, so let's be honest: he's one of the WORST opera interpreters out there, I wish great singers like Mariusz Kwiecen, Matthew Polenzani, and René Pape received the publicity he gets, though it won't happen; at least some consolation lies in the fact that these people are true artists willingly and GLADLY offering their art to the people in order to make a living; I'm sure if Andrea didn't make so much $$$$ with his opera experiment, he would've dropped this travesty long ago.

I'm not a genuine, dyed-in -the-wool opera fan. The sound of the soprano voice makes me grit my teeth. Some of the great tenors are very pleasing, but mostly I'm just not especially enthusiastic or impressed. Actually, I think it's rather stupid for good singers to abuse their voices by bellowing. This was necessary before the invention of amplification, but not any more.
So, obviously, I'm not in the position to compare Bocelli's arias to those of the tenors considered the greats. I can hear that his voice lacks the robustness of the Pavarottis of this world. BUT - I like many of the famous arias, and to my ear, Bocelli's performances, electronically enhanced or not, are melodic and pleasant to the ear. As a result of listening to Bocelli, I've become familiar with some great music that I would otherwise be likely to ignore.
So I listen and enjoy and really don't care about all the criticism.

Great cd.......2007-03-31

Before I start on this cd Iam new to Motorhead I started with the Ace of Spades and Overkill.

This album in my opinion has 8 great classic songs on it.

Terminal show,Killers, In the name of tragedy, Suicide, In the Black, Fight, In the year of the wolf, and Whorehouse Blues are all 5 star tracks

the others non mentioned are 4 star tracks which are enjoyable to listen to but not as much as those 8

8/12 tracks being great on that album makes it a 5 star album

Although 'Inferno' may not be the best Motorhead album w/ the current line up (I reserve that distinction for 'Bastards' or 'Sacrifice', so far), it certainly kicks some serious tail. The two best tracks are definitely "In The Black", a grinding rant about stalking Miss Right(now), and "Smiling Like a Killer" which is an all-out revisit (but by no a re-hash) of "The Hammer". What I don't understand is why other reviewers compare Motorhead to bands who are, at best, suited to carry Motorhead's equipment (Slayer/Metallica). Motohead is "it"... to rock'n'roll what Cash is to folk/country. If you want rock, buy Motorhead.

Now THIS is what Motorhead's all about. After a looong time Motorhead is sounding like Motorhead again. This stuff just KILLS the new stuff by Metallica (St anger..puke!) and Megadeth (TSHF). Funny how the band (Lemmy of course) who inspired them all is now beginning to actually surpass their inspirations 20+ years later. Truly standout tracks on this release are ''Lifes a Bitch'', and ''Killers''. Best rock album of 2004 IMO. Buy or POSE, choice is yours..

Motorhead returns to form.......2006-06-18

After too many mediocre ("March or Die", "Hammered", "We are Motorhead"), or almost-good ("B*stards", "Sacrifice"), or downright bad ("Snake Bite Love"), albums, this is a true return to form by Lemmy and the boys. Much of this seems to be related to the new producer hired for this album (and for the upcoming one), Cameron Webb. On the bonus DVD that accompanies some Inferno copies, Lemmy admits that Webb got them out of their old routine and really pushed them to 'try a little harder' this time.

And it shows. You can hear that a lot of care has gone into (most of) the songs, the production is cool and understated, and Lemmy's voice hasn't sounded better for a long time. OK, so there is no "Ace of Spades" or "Overkill" on this one, but the overall standard of the songs is very high nonetheless. "Killers", "Down on Me", "In the Black", "In the Year of the Wolf", "In the Name of Tragedy", "Suicide", "Whorehouse Blues" are the stand-out tracks, really outstanding stuff. Maybe it also has something to do with Lemmy's involvement with Dave Grohl and Probot, that all of a sudden Motorhead sounds relevant again, and ready to conquer a new generation of fans.

So please, none of that "Hey, this is Motorhead, these guys put out the same album every year, and it's always cool, so just go ahead and buy it", no, Inferno is different, and good. I remember hearing Orgasmatron on the radio when it was released, 20 years ago this year. Inferno is easily the best Motorhead studio album I've heard ever since.

Inferno is not a bad album by any means, but my interest in it has worn off just a little bit since my first enthusiatic initial listens. it's hard to shake the sense of thinking there are a few too many Lemmy and Co. on auto pilot moments here...but the sense of dynamics is hightened to reveal some fresh ideas in the Motorhead camp. most notable in "Keys To The Kingdom" which has a great groove and is catchy as hell.

The Art of Gigli.......2007-03-09

After Caruso's death, Beniamino Gigli became one of the most renowned tenors in the world. His rich voice well justified his reputation. While some of his mannerisms (the little "cries" and "catches" in his voice) can be a bit overdone, they were not atypical of the time. A few reactions to specific cuts.

"Celeste Aida" from Verdi's opera is smoothly sung; his rich voice serves to good effect. As already noted, the little "cries" are unfortunate, but hardly an issue. His higher notes flow smoothly from lower ones, in a seamless fashion. It would have been nice to hear him try for the piano at the end, but he did not choose to do so. Any way you slice it, a nice version of a glorious aria.

"La donna e mobile" is taken at a rather slow pace. It is smoothly sung but does not really catch the spirit of the wretched Duke. He shows wonderful breath control. This is more a workmanlike than scintillating version. On the other hand, "Che gelida manina" is wonderful. Smooth, elegant singing. A very well done high note. An iconic version.

The twin arias from "Tosca," "Recondita armonia" and "E lucevan le stelle" are very well executed. His rendering of the final "la vita" in the latter aria is, again, noteworthy.

And now for something completely different. . . . "Funiculi funicula" is spritely sung, in good spirits, and it is a lot of fun! Most enjoyable. "O Sole mio," likewise, is well rendered. As previously noted, some "off putting" cries, but the warm, full voice more than makes up for such mannerisms. He does not overpower this song with operatic technique. The end result is most satisfying.

"La danza" befuddled the great Caruso (in his version, his breathing fell apart at one point). But not Gigli. Well sung, good breath control. Bravo Gigli!

Back to opera. . . . "Nessun dorma" is well sung. The vocalization is smooth. Gigli's voice soars over orchestra and other voices. The final "Vincero" rings out.

While this CD is not without some questions, as noted above, it is worth 5 stars for its full portrayal of the work of Gigli. As such, it can be recommended for anyone who wants a comprehensive introduction to this singer.

It's an honor for me to be "the first" to review this recording for Amazon. As "opera lovers" know, Gigli was "the greatest tenor in the world" for many years after the death of Caruso. If you haven't heard Gigli, a great treat is in store for you! He had "penache" and drama in the way he sang. Plus he had a beautiful tonal quality! I could go on and on but if you "pass this guy up" you'll be missing some beautiful and dramatic singing from a "world class" singing actor.

Besides listening to Gigli on Cd, you'd be doing yourself a favor to buy a movie in which Gigli appears and sings. The movie is called "Non Ti Scordar di Me". I'll try to find it on amazon or from "The Bel Canto Society" and give it a "review" also. It's an "old movie" but it has a VERY touching story, is well acted, and you get to see and hear Gigli which is a great treat since he has been gone for at least 50 years. Excellent collection.......2003-02-15

This is an excellent collection of great tenors past to present.
While some are still missing (Jussi Bjorling, for instance), it provides a spectacular array of singers from Caruso (earliest) to Alagna (latest). The arias are selected to showcase each tenor's strength: Ernst Haefliger sings "Dalla sua Page" and Jose Carreras sings "Maria", Carlo Bergonzi -- "Parmi veder le lagrime." There's much to enjoy here, and DG's presentation is, as always, superb.

One CD too many. Decent value, though.......1999-12-20

This collection is worth buying for CD 1 alone (and for the low price, of course). Peter Anders was new to me but is marvellous in the Prize Song from Meistersinger. Amazon has got it all wrong on track 6, which features none other than the incomparable Alfredo Kraus singing the Kleinzach aria from Hoffman like few other tenors - at the age of 67 (!). You won't believe what you hear.

The rest of the first CD is equally good stuff, mixing all kinds of tenor voices from the lightest (Schreier, Wunderlich) to the heaviest (Corelli, Del Monaco, Vickers).

CD 2, however, is a sad story. "The 3 tenors" get two tracks each to deliver their usual bland performances, and the rest of the tracks are mostly rather odd choices, even when sung by otherwise fine tenors like Kollo and Araiza. Perhaps Jerry Hadley does the finest performance in "Che gelida manina". I don't care much for Alagna or Schicoff.

Regarding the selection, perhaps the record should be called "Some Tenors of the Century". If DG had given "the 3" one track each and left out Luigi Alva and Araiza, we could have had Melchior, Björling, Gigli and Gedda, to name but a few.

Anyway, there you have it: put CD 1 into your player, press "REPEAT" and just leave it there.

I didn't buy this online, but needless to say it is one of the best Tenor CD's I own. I am still in the process of trying to locate a recording of "M'appari tutt' amor" by von Flotow from the Opera Martha. If anyone knows where I could get this, that would be great! This is a great buy for two CD's.

hallomas is such a special show. i'm proud to have been at this show. you won't get exactly what it's like to see this band, but you will enjoy this album!!!

maybe not perfect for the WHOLE family, but awesome all the same. there are a bunch of songs on here that have only been available previously in pretty bad quality - the quality is amazing on this album - i'd say almost better than at the shows themselves

hallowmas is a truly amazing experience, and this definitely gives you an idea of that. i'd still say come to the real thing, though.

The next best thing to being there..........2003-09-23

The World/Inferno Friendship Society's Hallomas Live at North 6 cd brings all of the fun of being there without the candycorn getting stuck in your hair. This is a band that truly defies all classification. Jack Terricloth's between song banter provides a fun interlude between some amazing quality live songs. This is a great album for the whole family!
