Product Description

From the introduction: This CD is the second edition of Archeophone’s very first release, which established our mission of providing detailed, scholarly, and unabashed reissues of the early recording industry’s product in attractive and generous packages. With this newly remastered, freshly annotated edition, we are bringing our first and favorite release to the standards that you expect from the leader in acoustic-era reissues. To some music fans, the title of Real Ragtime sounded like a battle cry of authenticity, but the aim of the collection was and remains a simple one, grounded in the history of record buying a century ago: to show that the ragtime consumers were likely to find on records for more than 20 years was not the kind of ragtime we think of today. They were more likely to find banjos and brass bands playing ragtime than pianos, and their collections of disc recordings almost certainly had numerous examples of watered-down ragtime—the Tin Pan Alley knock-offs that really had no ragtime but called themselves “rags” just for the added marketability such a designation would bring. Ragtime was as much about a musical mood, a general feeling in the air, as it was about what scholars would identify as real ragtime. It was a trope that defined the early recording industry and pervaded the entire culture for a generation. These are the recordings people listened to, whether they were really ragtime or not—and they were thought of, no doubt, as the genuine item.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Archeophone's "Real Ragtime" Second Edition.......2005-10-09

This is the second edition of this CD to be released by Archeophone Records. It contains one additional tune and one substitution. The selections have been remastered, and the sound which was good the first time, has even been improved this time. Some of these recordings are over one hundred years old, and have no right to sound this good! This disc offers a good cross section of the music that was popular between 1898 and 1918. The booklet is done with a real attention to detail, and a lot of information is included along with photographs and first class graphics. This disc, along with the others from this company (I have them all), can stand tall alongside any other reissues by anyone!

Titles I especially enjoy are "Booster Fox Trot" by the Victor Military Band; "Dill Pickles Rag" by Chris Chapman; "The International Rag" by Collins and Harlan; "Cohen's Rag Babe" by Arthur Collins; and "Ragtime Temple Bells" by Billy Murray.

By the way, the substitution mentioned is a different version of "Dill Pickles Rag". The original version by Chris Chapman (1908), is included here, while the version by William H. Reitz (1922), was featured in the first edition of this CD. The additional tune is "Sugar Plum" by Samuel Siegel and Roy Butin.

For those who enjoy original recordings of the first quarter of the twentieth century, this disc is a good place to begin. Archeophone Records is the premier company reissuing this material, and I can recommend their CDs highly. They have released discs featuring Bert Williams, Billy Murray, Art Hickman, and The Benson Orchestra of Chicago; along with over twenty more titles, all of the highest quality sound that modern remastering will allow.

5 out of 5 stars Iron Maiden - Ed Hunter - .......2007-05-14

This Cd is cool, because i like pc games and of course I'm a big Maiden's fan.

3 out of 5 stars Get this for the classic song "Run to the hills".......2007-03-27

I've belatedly decided to review an Iron Maiden cd after watching a "Classic albums" episode which featured Iron Maiden's "Number of the beast". I gave reviewing one of their albums a miss since I wouldn't be really positive about it.

Anyway, since it's been months since I've listened to them, I'll just go on memory here. The main reason that I don't rate Iron Maiden that highly is because I really like hook laiden songs and cool sounding guitars. On the latter count, Iron Maiden don't really have distinctive guitar sounds, at least when compared to the likes of my favourite hard rock band, AC/DC, or bands like Metallica. As for the former point, if they do have hooks in their songs, they are waaay to subtle me...I prefer the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

There are two Iron Maiden songs that I really like and rate very highly. The first is "Run to the hills", which I consider a classic [never mind what genre]. First heard this song as a kid and hadn't really heard it since. Even so, despite not having heard this song for years on end, I STILL remembered its distinctive opening guitar riff, which is in itself a classic. If Iron Maiden had made more songs which I liked as much and had a comparable guitar sound, I would rate them more highly as a band. Re-listening to this song on cd, I was reminded of the really cool drum intro to the song...something I had forgotten about. Not sure how original that intro is [it reminds me of another song's drum bite...Wing's "Take it away"? Not sure.]. This song is also noticeable for its political content...concerning the treatment of American natives. When I re-listened to this song, I thought that it swung from pro-native American to a bit anti-native American. The Classic Albums episode cleared that up. The songwriter said that he wrote the first part of the song from the perspective of native Americans and the second part from the perspective of the cowboys. Lastly, this song shows the lead singer, Bruce Dickinson, at his vocal best. His glassy voice shines in this song, and I had the impression that this style was par for the course from him. No such luck. In fact, I would have liked the band better if Bruce had gone MUCH further in that vocal direction-even a parody of this style would work for me, as this is a REAL hook for me. For example, one of my favourite bits of the song is where Bruce starts a particular part of the song with a low rumble and progressively sings higher and higer. Wow, that is sooooo COOL! Don't know whether you would call that 'falsetto' or not, but whatever you call it, I could have done with more from the band.

The other song that I particularly like is "The clansman". This is another song with social/political content. It's about the conflict between the English and the Scots. Can't say if I like these two songs because of such political/social content, but they do add an extra layer of depth to the band. A band which made its bread and butter from political and social songs with infectious pop/rock was Australia's Midnight Oil...a band which I rate as one of the top half dozen bands of all time. I love the Oils music for its sound, perhaps not its politics...though I'm sure I wouldn't like it they sang about right wing things. Suppose I'm just saying that this is an area Maiden have perhaps neglected too much to their detriment. "Run to the hills" is not too dissimilar from the stuff the Oils have done and just as catchy. "The clansman" is unlike the Oils, in that it is from the perspective of whites, whereas the Oils, a white band, tend to take the side of Aborigines...who I think have probably suffered more than the Scots at the hands of the English.

Back to the reason I don't rate the band so highly-like I say, "Run to the hills" is BURNED into my brain. Don't think I'll ever forget the guitar riff. Here's the problem, nothing else really has that 'sticky' [to the memory] element to it. Not even The Clansman. All I remember of that song is that I really like it, though I don't really remember how it goes.

Having watched the docu mentioned above, I was reminded that the song "Number of the beast" isn't too bad and does have a more distinctive sound to it than I remember. That's part of the problem, you [or me at least] tend to easily forget Maiden songs that you sort of like. "Number of the beast" is probably my pick as their third best song. From memory, "Phantom of the opera" isn't too bad either.

One thing going against THIS particular compilation is that it doesn't have the LIVE version of "Fear of the dark". When I first heard it on this compilation, it sounded like a kiddies' song...sort of nursery rhyme feel to it. Didn't think too much of this song. BUT, on the "Edward the Great" compilation there is a live version of it. The participation of the crowd in that song really MAKES the song terrific. The flipside of "Edward the Great" is that it doesn't have The Clansman on it. So, it's win some, lose some, re versions of songs.

I'll finish this review with some more impressions of the band. To me, Iron Maiden are a fantasy band...they deal in occultish themes and have live shows with monster like characters. So, if that kind of posturing scares you, you might want to avoid the band. To me, it doesn't matter. Might have shocked me when I was kid and a Christian, but now, as an atheist, it's just entertainment/part of the show. Alice Cooper might have started the tradition of scary live shows, but listening to his music, he seems quite middle of the road now. Whereas Alice Cooper had ghoulish live shows, his lyrics didn't really reflect that...unlike Maiden, who DO deal in their songs with this kind of stuff.

Given this fascination with the occult, what REALLY surprised me about their songs was that some of them were unintentionally funny to me...I mean their Biggles type songs. These songs, like "Tail gunner" and "Aces high" position you, the listener, as a fighter pilot or some such. I had a kind of "nah" reaction to these songs...i.e. I didn't want to buy into this aspect of their fantasy. However, "Aces high" isn't all that bad and is quite good in fact, at least when comparing it to my first reaction to it when I saw it on a music video show many years ago.

So, perhaps you might be the type of person shocked by such occultish themes as the band explore. For me, probably nothing could be as shocking as Alannis Morrisetter singing "Would she go down on you in a theatre?" in her classic song "You oughta know". If you can get past the fantasy aspect of this band, you could find stuff to really like about them.

To end, I'll mention a couple of things-firstly, in the docu I mentioned, someone associated with the band [producer or manager...not sure] tells how he or the band ran into a van full of nuns [hey, accidentally of course! These guys aren't REALLY monsters], and the repair bill came to $666 pounds! [i.e. the number of the beast].

Secondly, I recomment the docu on heavy metal called "Metal-a headbangers journey". It's an EXCELLENT discussion on the history and genres of metal. Although I wasn't a die hard Iron Maiden fan, I must say that their lead singer, Bruce Dickinson was absolutely a brilliant contributer to the docu with his honesty and insight to the topic. In the Classic Albums docu you can see a different looking Bruce-he looks quite cool in his prep-boy look...sort of a touch of the Angus Youngs there.

P.S. I've also reviewed at this site cds by

Metallica
Megadeth
Black Sabbath
Midnight Oil

P.P.S. Here are some songs I consider to be classics of the metal genre:

Metallica: Fade to black

Megadeth: Prince of darkness

Iron Maiden: Run to the hills [though it doesn't have the quality of the other two in terms of me being willing to listen to it over and over and over again in a short period of time]

AC/DC: Hell's bells

3 out of 5 stars Better Cds out there.......2005-06-21

I have been following Maiden since the Killers album (yes, album...ie LP) and in my opinion you can do much better than buy this CD. If you are a new Maiden fan, you might want to just buy the Live After Death cd, as it has a lot of classic Maiden tunes for a much cheaper price. Once you have listened to "Live After Death", and want to dive deeper into Maiden, then go and buy "Somewhere in Time", as this was released after Live After Death. If you still are hungry for more Maiden, then go ahead and pick up the Paul DiAnno CDs (Iron Maiden, and Killers). I wouldn't waste my time with any Iron Maiden title after Somewhere in Time.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect welcoming for new Maiden fans........2004-12-23

I very much enjoy every single song on both cds. This was the first Iron Maiden cd I ever bought, and if you don't like it, you get a video game with it. I haven't played the game so I don't know if thats any good or not. "Hallowed Be Thy Name" is my favorite song of them all. It is also one of my favorite songs in general. It is missing a few Maiden classics, but, you can't possibly put all of their classics into just a few cds.

3 out of 5 stars Good CD - not great.......2003-12-16

Dickinson is by far the better singer and exemplifies what NWBHM is all about. Anyone who likes "the other guy" better might as well listen to new Metallica albums.

Although I do agree that "Run to the Hills" is the most overrated song in the history of metal, I disagree with the gentleman (underneath my review) on some other critiques. First of, "The Evil That Men Do," is one of if not the best songs on this comp. It may not be classic, prototypical Maiden, but it is epic, which is what NWBHM is all about.

Anyway, get the CD - it's worth it

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A gateway drug, nothing more, nothing less. .......2007-03-11

To say that this album constitutes a necessity for the classical music enthusiast would be a great big unarguable lie. It has nothing innovative to offer you as a listener, except for maybe the labelling of melodies such as "My Heart Will Go On" (that god-awful Love Theme from the gruesome film Titanic) as a worthy member of "Best Classics 100". But than again, every collection of things that does not naturally belong together, is bound to have at least one outcast where the connection clearly isn't based on anything but cost and sale-ability.

This might sound like the beginning of a CD-slaughter, or a snobbish review where only the Deutche Grammophone's recordings are meting my standards, but although I am fairly picky when it comes to musical collections, best of albums, and such horrifying destructions of the universality of the works and the intentions of the artist behind it, I am willing to give this collection another chance, since classical music is somewhere between Arabic and wine in degree of unmanageability. It also helps that all the tunes are familiar to almost every one of us, and the fact that the artists' intentions probably got killed by the hundreds of different conductors trying to convey their personal interpretation of the works.

What I am saying is that this CD can be to classical music enthusiast what 'absolute rock' can be to a rock enthusiast, or to someone slightly interested, with no conceptual frames of where to start the search for knowledge. "Best Classics 100" offers nothing except a selection of melodies where there's bound to be one for every taste, but where the album feeling, the entirety or completeness intended by the composer, or conductor, or performer is completely lost in a trade-off made with variety.

The collection is attempted organised by giving each CD a different theme, supposedly to describe the mood of the music, and the labeller succeeds only to a limited extent as we move from themes such as 'uplifting' and 'relaxing' towards 'golden'. I wonder what that golden feeling constitutes. It apparently is to be found in, amongst others, "Jesus Bleibet Meine Freunde", and in "My Heart Will Go On"?

But no matter how I try to describe this CD it will sound worse than it actually is. This because to me it works as a great reference to which I can always turn with my classical music questions. Was it Schumann or Schubert who were the sad one? Of all the -inis, which where which again? Who composed "O Mio Babbino Caro"? The starting point for finding out if you belong to the romantic or the renascence wing, lies within this assemblage, if you look with your ears.

If you feel that classical music is something you like, and you'd like to learn more about it, this is a way to get started. If used together with a book on classical music, or wikipedia, it can be a gateway drug, leading you towards the great different experiences to be found within the different genres of classical music, and within the different periods ranging from the 12th century, maybe even earlier, towards yesterdays and tomorrows spectacular compositions of melodies that conveys a feeling, a state of mind with much more precision than any other musical genre. Expect a fairly alright collection of classical prunes, and you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Selection, But..........2005-04-21

...The Audio Quality is really not great. I bought this CD because I am new to classical, and the price was great! 100 songs for 25 bucks, thats like 25 cents a song, most songs are 1 dollar or more. Now I know why it's cheaper. The audio quality isn't that good. I imported the entire collection to my computer using Apple Lossless, and it sounded fuzzy, not crisp, with background noise, and sounded like compressed music, cutting off the frequency response.
I then played the CD's through my home stereo, with the same results. I plugged in my SHURE E5c headphones and the sound was soft, uninviting, lacking punch, with significant backgound noise (not just from the headphones), which was especially distracting when the music would get softer. I have heard much of the music before, and it was much more dynamic, entertaining, this recording seems too flat.
The music selection is ok, but I was hoping for some more interesting selections from the vast classical genre.
Overall, not that great of a recording, but many might not notice the difference, so if you are new to classical or aren't like an audiophile, get this album because it's a great overview of pop-culture classical, and it's pretty inexpensive.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have classical music set!.......2005-01-06

Classical music is, by far, my favorite type of music. It can make you happy or sad, it can make you laugh or cry, and it can make you want to fall asleep or get up and dance. This 6-disc set is a must-have for and classical music-lover! It has all the great composers like Handel, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Bach, and Pachelbel. Some great songs include: Canon In D(Pachelbel), Morning: Peergynt(Grieg), Adagio For Strings(Barber), Cavatina(Myers), and much, much more. Every classical song you can think of is on here and the sound quality is great. So if you're looking for a good classical music CD, this set is all you need. Be prepared to be blown away!

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Inathentic" But Toweringly Dramatic Gluck!.......1999-07-19

For some years during the sixties and seventies, this 1952 broadcast performance of the second act of Gluck's "Orfeo" was one of the rarest Toscanini items, after the original Red Seal issue (LM-1850) was deleted, and before the German Victor release (AT-127) was imported to the USA. B. H. Haggin found that the original domestic issue of the "superb broadcast performance" had "flawed sound"; the German issue was even thinner and more artificial. The present CD is probably the best that we shall ever be able to hear (in fact, in its first release ever, critic Robert C. Marsh stated emphatically that the sound was "extremely good.")

We find from the CD (and recalling our old "2S" pressing of the LP) that it is rather strident, with extreme coloration of the upper midrange: due, no doubt, to the telephone equalizers used for the "linecheck" recording. There are high frequencies far beyond the "network radio quality" of some other Toscanini material, but they are not realistic, due to the phase distortion present. Yet, the broadcast balances were good, and the clarity of detail is readily apparent. "Orfeo" was one of the conductor's big "set pieces" at the Metropolitan Opera and La Scala, earlier in the century, and his own orchestration is used here, with a dramatic tam-tam stroke applied during the climax of the "Dance of the Furies": a thrilling moment. Merriman is eloquent and powerful; the choral direction is superb; and the production has life and vigor, if not totally surpassing the overall impression of the earlier 1945 NBC live concert (in poorer sound, not generally available.)

The scena "Abscheulicher!" from Fidelio was re-made in Carnegie Hall in 1945, with Rose Bampton recording the section of the opera which she so badly "fluffed" in the live 1944 broadcast (where she hit the final climactic high note hideously off pitch.) The re-recording was no doubt effected so that some day the complete opera broadcast could be issued; it was indeed released as a "single" during the 78 rpm era, and with the complete opera in the mid-fifties, and again on the Gold Seal Toscanini Collection (Vol. 54).

One marginally prefers the old 1929 recording of the "Dance of the Blessed Spirits" by Gluck with the PSNY under Toscanini (Vol. 66); but this 1946 shellac version is grave and eloquent, too.
