Not particularly interesting.......2006-03-19
I had hopes for this recording after reading an interview with Anne Akiko Meyers, the violinist and dedicatee of "Angel Fire". She is a superb and sensitive artist whose work I admire.
The recording is very disappointing. Modernist composers often disappoint me. I'm not in love with dissonance. I'm not open to aural assaults. I was unable to listen all the way through to any of the compositions on the CD.
It's unclear to me if there was truly any intent to these compositions beyond the "because I can" reasoning that appears to dominate all segments of art. I'm being generous by giving the recording two stars.
Schwantner Remembers 9/11.......2005-09-17
Joseph Schwantner is one of the greatest American composers of our time, having written much accessible modern music in his career, ranging from the Sharon Isbin-commissioned guitar concerto "From Afar" to "New Morning For The World" for speaker and orchestra. Four of his compositions, one of which touches on the memory of the 9/11 terrorist attacks of 2001, are featured on this new Hyperion recording by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and various soloists, with the orchestra's music director Andrew Litton leading the proceedings.
The opening work, "A Sudden Rainbow", composed in 1986 and thus the earliest work on the recording, is almost a concerto for orchestra, putting special emphasis on the percussion section, as well as parts for celesta and amplified piano. "Angelfire", composed in 2001, is a mini-concerto for amplified violin and orchestra and is dedicated to violinist Anne Akiko-Meyers, whose performance of it here is extremely commendable. "Beyond Autumn" is a work for horn and orchestra, and is brilliantly rendered by the DSO's principal horn player Gregory Hustis.
The final work, and really the piece-de-resistance, is "September Canticle", a work Schwantner composed in 2002 as a meditation of sorts on the subject of the horrible terrorist attacks, and a requiem for the three thousand-plus who lost their lives on that fateful late summer morning in American history. The work, which is described by the composer as a "fantasy" for organ, brass, percussion, amplified piano, and strings, is an immense memoriam for the dead and the survivors, with organist James Diaz superlative in his concerto-like role.
All four works are bought together under Litton's solid direction, and the Dallas Symphony shows why it is one of our nation's greatest orchestras, particularly when it comes to performing the music of our native soil and of our times. This is a recording of contemporary classical music that is more than worth the price of the CD. It may yet turn out to be an essential classical recording of our era.

Review in Majestic Magazine.......2000-02-25
And suddenly (at least to me) there was Millenium. Born from the remains of Eyewitness (I was told) this band surprises me with great melodic hardrock. I've been surprised quite a few times this year and this is another release that stunned me sometimes. Millenium may not be for the more AOR orientated people among us, but the ones that love their music a little more hard and heavy sometimes (what a cliché, I know...) like me should take a listen to this little gem! Q5 is the first band that comes to mind when I have to find something to compare this album to. Especially their second album. The beautiful high voice of J. Todd Plant and the layers and layers of vocals in some of the songs make Angelfire at some points sound exactly like that classic from the 80's. So do the brilliant (lead) guitars of Ralph Santolla. What a great sound that man has! My favorite songs are the first 6 (7 if you count the instrumental intro Nations as a song). Beyond The Pain is of such beauty, I can hardly describe it and as you may know by now, I'm not lost for words very often. The same can be said about Until The End Of Time and Julia (what a ballad!). Absolutely two more of my favorite songs this year. I gotta be honest with you though. After these 6 (or 7) gems the level comes down a bit. Bound For Glory is the first harbinger of that. Run gets the level up again but it takes until Saving Grace before we hear the next real great song again. Don't get me wrong, a lot of bands would kill for a song like Waiting For Godot, but after the sheer brilliance (you get used to that very quickly), Waiting For Godot is a bit of a disappointment. So is Remember, an a capella thingy that would have done well on your average AOR album but not on a mighty masterpiece like Angelfire could have been. Fortunately from Saving Grace on the quality increases again. The only thing I can say about The Color Of Night and Hide Behind My Face is that both of them are top-notch after which the little guitar outro Dawn ends the album. Again, this album is not for the faint at heart although it's not metal either. It does have its rough edges though but people who are heavily into 80's hardrock will be pleasantly surpised. It's a shame about the few minor flaws, otherwise this could have been another full score album...

Millenium - Angelfire.......2000-02-22
Outstanding! The music is very tight. Even though the singer is the only member to sing, he overdubs very effectively. The two guitars harmonize and complement each other. The songs have a "uniqueness" to them that gives them their own personality. Great metal, you can live it. Go for it and enjoy the heat of Angelfire.
