Classic Album... and deserves its due.......2007-07-26

I'll start by saying that I absolutely despise Iron Maiden and think they are the most overated band in metal history. That said, Judas Priest could be the most underated. This baby right here just drives that point home bigtime. The album pays for itself with the opening track alone. Victim of Changes is perfection. I think there are better Priest albums - headed by Stained Glass but back in the day...this group took the heavy metal drivers seat (so to speak) and drove it to freakin musically lore. They deserve much of the praise given to "eddie" much, much more.

BOW TO THE PRIEST.......2006-10-08

The Metal Gods when they were only Rock Gods. Victim Of Changes is the break out song on this piece. Also a number about Jack The Ripper (The Ripper) which Tim Owens uses as his name after he replaced Rob Halford when he left. This is a true classic album for The Priest, the Tyrants of all.

Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny.......2006-07-18

I was first turned on to this album around '83 - '84. I have a brother ten years older than me and he had Sad Wings on vinyl. When I first started getting into metal/hard rock it was Iron Maiden, Saxon, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Rush, 80's Priest. I was listening to Maiden/Killers one day in my room when he burst in, took the record off and started to put Sad Wings on. I was pissed at first and jumped up to stop him. He pushed me back down and said, "just listen". So I did. I must have listened to Sad Wings 20 to 30 times in a row that evening. I turned all my long haired, metal head buddies on to it the next day. It is probably, if not the best, then one of the best metal albums ever.

Not like other Priest albums.......2007-01-24

If you compare Sad Wings of Destiny to any other Priest album, or if your only familiar with their 80s stuff, you'll notice a BIG difference in the style the music is played. I want to say this album is like a heavier version of old RUSH songs, but that would be insulting because this is Judas Freakin Priest we're talking about here! The songs on Sad Wings are long, not very heavy, artistic, and more complex than their later albums. Its a tough one to call, but you have to give credit where it's due. Priest really did a nice job on this album.

ABSOLUTE PRIEST.......2006-04-17

This is an album you should go out and buy. Plain and simple. Do not burn this one, buy it. Don't download the album from Apple to put into your Ipod... go buy the CD, it is crucial that you do it this way. Heres the lowdown...
In 1974 JUDAS PRIEST released their first album Rocka Rolla on an indie label, and it was sooo bad that the label made them wait two years before allowing them to record a follow up.
In 1976 they returned with this SAD WINGS OF DESTINY... an album that is soooo good that it instantly put them on a major label and grounded them for legendary status' to come.
SAD WINGS is an album that is a must own, for a lot of reasons, but mainly it is the way that this album is put together. It is hard to get it just right, and the way most of the tracks fit together with one another is absolutely crucial.. I'll get back to this, first off here are the tracks...
VICTIM OF CHANGES is two tracks in one, Whiskey Woman was a pre-Halford Priest song that is mixed up with a pre-Priest Rob Halford song to make one of the most epic of tracks.. VICTIM...
THE RIPPER.. simply amazing, one of the most important metal songs of all time.
DREAMER DECEIVER/DECEIVER.. two seperate tracks that should only be listened to as one (think of it in the way you would FLOYDS Brain Damage/Eclipse... one song)
The first songs here originally made up side two of the album, this was changed sometime in the early eighties, due to the fact that these are probably the more "powerful" songs... don't worry about this...
PRELUDE/TYRANT... so think of this as the beggining. Again two tracks that should be one, these should not be seperated in any way shape or form. This stuff is rockin', with a very cool, somewhat mysterious chorus... bad ass!
GENOCIDE.. a straight up old school rocker, very cool...
Those songs are all masterpieces, and this album IS an absolute masterpiece... EPITAPH comes in at the end, and is probably the most bashed of Priest songs. Can't dissagree, the song is a total suck fest... BUT without it, SAD WINGS just wouldn't be the same (I guess you just have to KNOW the album to understand) right back into ISLAND OF DOMINATION, which itself is a little awkward at points, but finishes on a nice, heavy, Priest style, that will definatley satisfy any metal fix.
Any Priest fan who is not familiar with SAD WINGS, really does not know what JUDAS PRIEST really is all about, and I gotsta say, that burning this album, or downloading it is a waste of time... You want this. You want to play it really loud, and in it's entirety, the way it was meant to be heard (ok, so side 1 and side two have been reversed, this way is fine too, just don't {F} with the mix any more.) SAD WINGS is one of MY all time albums... PRIEST single handedly closed out prog-metal with a bang, and at the same time planted the seeds for thrash metal... so yeah PRIEST is a pretty big deal in metal music... don't ever forget about SAD WINGS.
P.S> there are a few different releases of this, check it out, other than some different artwork on the covers thy're all the same, figure out which one best suits your wallet more than anything... Enjoy this one.

Heavy Metal At It's Best.......2000-01-19

It's too bad that pioneering metal bands such as The Scorpions and Judas Priest started off creating serious and, yes, even artistic music only to degenerate eventually into cartoon caricatures of themselves. "Sad Wings of Destiny" is quintessential Heavy Metal, capturing Judas Priest at their finest before cliche set in. "Victim of Changes" thumps and grinds not only sonically but emotionally as well. "The Ripper" sums up in just a few minutes 100 years of gothic paranoia and mystery. "Dreamer/Deciever" begins as a poetic lilt and soars from there into colorful orbit. It really is too bad that JP could not sustain the heights reached with this album.

The Best Heavy Metal Record Ever Recorded........1999-09-22

If one album could truly be called "a masterpiece", it is undoubtebly "Sad Wings of Destiny". Listening to this album, there is little doubt that Judas Priest were never again able to accomplish such wonders. There are some songs that literally drive the listener to tears, they are so beautiful ("Victim of Changes", "Dreamer Deciever", and the cover of Joan Baez' "Diamonds and Rust"). It is a great shame that Priest strayed from this sound and become the leather-metal band they did after 1980. Had Priest stuck with this sound, I have no doubt they would be taken far more seriously than they are, as Priest are more remembered for such junk as "You've Got Another Thing Coming" and "Breaking The Law", not to mention being put on trial in the late 1980's for alledgedly driving two teens to suicide. I also reccomend Priest's "Sin After Sin" and "Stained Class". "Stained Class" ended the era of an "intelligent" Judas Priest, but "Sad Wings of Destiny" began it. Maybe one day Rob Halford will listen to this record again and write some more music like this. He would definetly be doing the world a great service.

I love this album........1999-07-25

I grew up with this on vinyl and am listening to it now after finding it on cd for the first time in about 10 years. The musicianship is amazing- Rob Halford's vocals are truly sensational, and track 1 (Victim of Changes) stands out as a defining creation. Truly a metal masterpiece.

Classic, and Greatly Underrated Heavy Metal \m/.......2005-09-08

The first time I heard this Judas Priest album, the only Judas Priest albums I knew were Painkiller, Screaming For Vengeance and British Steel, Priest's heavier and more popular. Upon first my listen to this album, I was pleasantly surprised to hear a sound closer to hard rock, reminescent of Deep Purple and "Paranoid"-era Black Sabbath. This album soon became my favorite in Priest's discography. So, without further ado, here's my review.

In 1974 Judas Priest released their debut album "Rocka Rolla". This album faced poor sales and public reception. This was mostly due to producer Rodger Bain having too much say in the production of that album. The sound quality simply sucked. And many Judas Priest songs that later became stage classics, such as "The Ripper" and "Tyrant" were left out. In 1975, Judas Priest changed things around by hiring a new producer and taking part in the production. The end result, a 39 minute long masterpiece. And now for the obligatory song-by-song breakdown.

1. Victim Of Changes- This song became an instant stage classic for Judas Priest. Rob Halford delivers an almost inhuman vocal performance. And Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing deliver some blistering guitar solos. This and Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" are commonly regarded as the two representative songs of metal. Oddly enough, "Victim of Changes" is infact a medley of "Whiskey Woman" a song that was already a Judas Priest classic (different band, same name) and "Red Light Lady", a song by Rob Halford's former band Hiroshima. The vocals, lyrics and instruments are nearly perfect in this classic. 10/10

2. The Ripper- Another Judas Priest stage classic. The haunting opening riff will be stuck in your head for weeks. The lyrics talk of "Jack the Ripper" (well, obviously). The vocal performance by Halford is perfect as always. Simply amazing song in general. 9/10

3. Dreamer Deceiver- This is my personal favorite song from the album. An beautiful ballad with some amazing singing by Rob Halford, followed by one of Priest's best guitar solos, and ending with a haunting scream by Rob Halford. Lyrically, this song is only second to Victim Of Changes. The album in general is one of few Priest albums with good lyrics. This is a song that I can listen to all day long. However, this song is not the most popular of Priest songs, for no possible reason that I can think of. An underrated masterpiece. 10/10

4. Dreamer Deceiver- The slow ballad of Dreamer Deceiver kick into high gear. Yet another stunning vocal performance by Rob Halford (surprise surprise). One of the fastest songs on the entire album. Not as great as its predecessor but still a good song. 8/10

5. Prelude- This one might catch the casual Judas Priest listener off guard. This is a completely instrumental track featuring a horn with some piano accompaniment. A good segue into the next track. 7/10

6. Tyrant- This is one of the heavier songs on the album. Usually a fan favorite but I am not a huge fan of it. Love the vocals and lyrics though. 8/10

7. Genocide- Another one of the heavier songs on this album. It borders thrash metal. This features an insane guitar riff that you will be humming for quite a while after listening to this song. One of the best vocal performances on the album, including some multi channel vocals "Slice to the left! Slice to the right! None to retaliate! None will fight!" similar to "Dissident Aggressor" on the album "Sin After Sin". Much better than "Tyrant", even though few will agree with me on this. 9/10

8. Epitath- Another surprise upon first listen. Judas Priest drops the electric guitars and drums for a beautiful albeit "schmaltzy" piano ballad with some great thought-provoking lyrics. And it makes a perfect segue into the next track. 9/10

9. Island Of Domination- Ah, this is one of the Judas Priest track with serious and obvious double entendres. Starting with a great scream by Rob Halford and featuring some, dare I say, funky guitar riffs through out this song is probably the most fun to listen to on this album. And Halford's shrieks, as well as high pitch screams, are almost godly. 10/10

An influentual and very underrated Heavy Metal classic.

Sad Wings Of Destiny (1976.) Judas Priest's second album.

Judas Priest's 1974 debut album, Rocka Rolla, sounded nothing like the albums they would release in later years, but it was certainly a premonition to the band's future successes. Just two years later in 1976, the band found its sound (some bands take an entire career searching for their sound, but Judas Priest found it on their SECOND ALBUM!). The band's 1976 sophomore album, Sad Wings Of Destiny, established a point - Heavy metal was here, and it was here to stay! Read on for my review of Sad Wings Of Destiny.

This is the album that established Judas Priest as the band we know and love them for being. Victim of Changes, the opener, is a slow rocker, but it's still hard and heavy. I'm almost positive Metallica stole one of the riffs from this song and use it in their Seek And Destroy. The Ripper, track number two, is my favorite on the album - and arguably of Priest's entire career. Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing never played guitar riffs better than they did in this song (though they DID tie it a few times.) An interesting note - the title of this song is where Rob Halford's vocal replacement Tim "Ripper" Owens got his alias! Dreamer Deceiver is a slow and melodic rocker which uses acoustic guitars. It's a perfect example of "Judas Priest is a band that doesn't always have to play heavy music to be good." Deceiver gives us straight-up classic NWOBHM-based metal. The number of British metal bands who ripped off this song is phenomenal. But hey, if you're gonna rip a band off, you may as well rip off the best!Prelude is one's basically piano playing and nothing more. This album is mostly good, but it has a few blunders, this one included. As the title implies, it's a "prelude" to the next track, a Judas Priest masterpiece.Tyrant's a fast and furious rocker, the way heavy metal was meant to be experienced. The band is in its prime here - no questions asked. This is my second favorite track on the album (it's second only to The Ripper.) Genocide is a hard rocker that has a bit of an American southern rock touch to it, making it somewhat similar to the tracks featured on the band's previous album. As for Epitaph, I'm not even sure why this track got put on the album. It's basically just Prelude all over again, but with some wimpy vocals. But Island of Domination, the closer, is another straight-up NWOBHM based rocker that many bands have ripped off. I honestly don't think the boys could have closed the album better.

Sad Wings Of Destiny is a heavy metal classic. Despite a few blunder tracks, the end result is ultimately excellent. Anyone who says heavy metal didn't reach its prime until the eighties has never heard this album. Whether you're a Judas Priest fan, a classic metal fan, or both, this album is a must-buy. Be warned though, it didn't get the remastering treatment the majority of the band's catalogue got, so you'll have to search a little harder for it - but it's worth it if you find it. All hail Judas Priest - The Metal Gods!

Outstanding remaster.......2003-05-18

Well, if you're looking at this, you probably already know how great the album is. I'm going to comment on the sound quality. I bought it on the assumption that it was different then the last Gull remaster.

It is, and quite a vast improvement. This is very true to the original mix, but it seems to have some re-mixing done. You can now hear Halford's vocals with extreme clarity, like never before. They sound very life-like, not unlike the latest Rolling Stones remasters.

A different vocal take is used on Victim of Changes, although I'm not sure which take I like better, they're both very good.

You can also hear the leads and bass with new clarity.

Grab a dictionary... look under PERFECTION and you'll see this badass starin' back at ya! Simply the best 'Heavy Metal' album ever to grace the planet! This version in perticular is my favourite (with the green/blue Judas Priest logo on the cover) and is a real gem... not easy to find... so if this item becomes available dont hesitate!!

RIGHT UP THERE WITH THE BEST.......2004-11-08

When Priest did this album live, it was awesome. This really is a great album and the themes of the songs are ever relevant. This album is quite a departure from other Priest albums and it is definately worth the investment: Halford shows his entire range and the guitar work by KK and Tipton are top notch. The quality of the recording and interplay of the instrumentals are fantastic. This is serious music by serious musicians and the production is extremely well done....think Pink Floyd and the maniacal perfectionism of Roger Waters.
I highly recommend this album for someone looking to explore more of Priest or Heavy Metal.

The best Priest album...and one of history's best as well.......1999-09-06

Sad Wings of Destiny is one of the finest metal albums of all time. Period. It belongs on the shelf next to Paranoid, Machine Head, KISS Alive, Van Halen I, Heaven and Hell, Blizzard of Ozz..all the absolute landmarks of the most misunderstood but passionate musical genre of modern times. Track by track, Victim of Changes sums up everything worthwhile in Priest: hooky, intricate guitars, wailing solos, a forceful rhythm section, and the vocals of Rob Halford. To go from some of the most intense screams ever captured on tape to the most sinister, Satanic sigh (during the mellow part preceding "once she was beautiful...") is to get a thumbnail sketch of human emotion in the amount of time it takes to have sex. Then comes The Ripper, a tune so frightful that the BBC banned it because at the time a serial killer was actually stalking London! Dreamer Deceiver is one of the few songs ever recorded which caused me to weep openly...it is the prototype for Beyond the Realms of Death which actually surpasses that already perfect song. Deceiver is the first mini-let down of the album, but the tempo reminds me of Children of the Grave by Sabbath so it can't be all that bad. The buildup to Tyrant reminds me of a James Gang song and reminds us that, hey, it WAS the '70s. Tyrant rocks along like punkish Thin Lizzy, with a chorus that would make for a great audience participation song. Next is Genocide, with its riff that could be right at home on KISS' Hotter than Hell. It never lets up despite some tempo changes; the listener cannot help but think "So catchy...but is it really about Hitler?" Epitaph is Queen-like, with soft beautiful singing, wonderful piano, and an air of uncertainty. Finally comes Island of Domination, not my favorite song on the album by a longshot but still great metal. Buy Sad Wings of Destiny today. The whole thing just reeks of evil.

Priest's Best...Metal at its best.......1999-04-30

Judas Priest is one of those rare Heavy Metal bands that seem to never put out a bad album (well...Turbo)Stained Class, British Steel, Screaming for Vengenace...but in my mind Sad Wings of Destiny is easily thier best effort. It's classic metal and classical metal at that: Roaring, crushing guitar riffs alongside reflective piano solos and gentle ballads. The album starts with one of Priest's best works, "Victim of Changes", and the quality of the album just doesn't let up after that. "The Ripper","Dream Deciever","Tyrant"....to finish it all off with the bruising "Island of Domination"...incredible. Halford's voice is at it's best here, with complete range from a pleasant tenor to glass-shattering wails. From what he shows here, he's the best male vocalist I've heard, heavy metal or otherwise. If you're into 90s crap metal, stay away. If you're a fan of great, classic 70's metal, you simply can't miss with this one. Amazon, get on the ball and get it in stock!!

Absolutly the best album ever recorded.......1999-04-24

there is nothing more to say #1 cd in my rack of 300 just to hear Dreamer Deceiver what a rush, the most powerful lead guitar riffs ever recorded. If i was to be trapped on a desert island this is the one cd i would want if you like metal this is a must buy at ten times the cost Rob Halford is the most phenomonal vocalist ever just listen to Dreamer Deceiver and see what i mean

One Of Their Best.......2001-12-12

Judas Priest's second album "Sad Wings Of Destiny" originally came out in 1976 on the Gull label, and was their last on an indie label before CBS Records picked them up the following year. Though the production left much to be desired, the spirit and playing of the band cannot be denied. The album kicks off with their eternal classic "Victim Of Changes" which sports one of their most classic riffs and some great wailing near the end by Rob Halford. You can sense lots of classical feel in this one as well. "The Ripper" is one of their shorter tunes but still a concert favorite to this day, and the lyrics take you back to 1888 when all these horrific crimes were done against the ladies of the night, almost feeling their anguish. You have to wonder if this crime will ever be solved. Next up are two songs that very much go together, the epic "Dreamer Deciever" and hard rocking "Deciever". The former iks one of their most beautiful songs, very melodic with an incredible solo from Glemm Tipton in the middle, and it leads perfectly into "Deciever". "Tyrant" has an awesome riff and in their early days was often used as a show closer. "Genocide" has so many great riffs in it, its almost progressive in its nautre and a great live version appears on "Unleashed In The East." The album ends with "Island Of Domination" and as one reviewer pointed out earlier, there is a bit of problem with the source tape at the 3:23 mark but only lasts a few seconds, I'm surprised as well with all the remasters this has never been fixed!! It still don't take away from a great song though. This album helped shape the future of many forms of metal, and bringing intelligence back to rock.

Great Sound, but a problem with the master tape.......2001-09-06

About 3:23 into Island of Domination, the master tape speeds up for a sec or 2, then resumes normal speed. I can't believe no one else has mentioned this! (I have the original album- vinyl! - on Gull records.)

Other than that, the sound quality is great.

The Science of Metal.......2001-03-01

This CD, "Sad Wings of Destiny", shows how erudite Judas Priest are in the field of heavy metal, and I'm not talking iron-ore! The song "Victim of Changes" reveals layers upon layers of composition from hints of classical all the way through scorching metal. It's a song which is a journey in itself, into a realm of personal emotion which Rob Halford has no trouble in expressing with his very dynamic vocal range. Also, the song "The Ripper" rips! Its a journey on London's foggy streets at night where the Ripper lurks. A true classic. "Tyrant" is another hot song, with a tight guitar/drum arrangement with a head-banging beat. I just heard there was a huge earthquake in Seattle, so I've got to cut this short to find out what's going on. As the title states, "Sad Wings of Destiny"... Buy this before its too late!

Total Range.......1999-09-30

Rob Halford has the range to make this albumn their best effort to date. Hero hero is the next best offering....Not in the same category as Black Sabbath...a close second. A good choice nonetheless

THE All-time Classic Heavy Metal Album.......1999-08-27

From the first time Joe Anthony (if you love heavy metal, you know who he was - God rest his soul) played "Victim Of Changes" on the radio in 1976, I have been and always shall be a Judas Priest/heavy metal fan. "Victim" will always be the standard heavy metal is judged by. After absolutely destroying my original Janus label LP, I purchased this CD to maintain the hiss-free momentum for the rest of my metal days. JP gives you only two breathers during this stretch with Rob's full range on "Dreamer Deceiver" and the thought provoking "Epitaph". The force of the rest of the disc is defined by the song titles: "Ripper", "Deceiver", "Tyrant", "Genocide" and "Island of Domination". (I have never really included "Prelude" as part of this disc because it was excluded from the Janus pressing.) If you love heavy metal, it will only take one spin. JP truly set the standard with this album. No heavy metal collection is complete without it. By the way, where are all of the original JP fans? "United" we stand - sound off for this incredible recording!
