Sequentia here performs a miracle of musical restoration, bringing to vibrant life medieval Icelandic texts about gods and heroes inhabiting a mythic past. Drawing on oral traditions and informed scholarly speculations about long-dead performing styles, they have come up with a hypnotic disc that startles with its power and beauties. The songs and recitations are interwoven with captivating fiddle tunes, and the singers wrench surprising emotions from the old texts. The late Barbara Thornton shines in her solos and duets, and Benjamin Bagby's mesmerizing chanting, recitation, and singing brings us as close as we're likely to get to sitting at the feet of the bards of old. An extraordinary disc that shouldn't be missed. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Sings to my DNA.......2007-02-17
While it's not unusual for me to have several different recordings of the same work by different performers, this is the only case in which I have two identical CDs, one for home and one for the car. I have to assume my Scots-Irish ancestry has some Nordic blood, as this music affects me powerfully. I haven't even read the program notes, so it can't be that the text's mesmerizing. This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if mead is your drink, it's perfect.
Pretty Good.......2007-02-01
There are some really awesome moments on this disc. All of the Voluspa segments, especially the final one describing Ragnarok, and The Song of the Mill are very well done. The stark atmosphere serves to not only enhance the singing portion, but really draw you into the song. The booklet that comes with the CD is essential, with beautiful translations of the poems that put Caroline Larrington's Poetic Edda to shame.
But there are also a lot of weak moments. I can't say that there is anything interesting in the instrumentals, which are fortunately few and far between. The Tale of Thrym is ok the first time through, but loses it's appeal very quickly. Odin's Rune Verses lack emotion compared to the rest of the pieces.
I also found the Italian Opera style singing a bit imposing. The rolling of the r's is sometime distracting, and I wondered the first time I heard it if that's what the language really sounds like. Of course, this is my first exposure to Icelandic, so I really couldn't tell you if its right or wrong, but the male singers do it much more than the females. Perhaps it just comes from their background as opera singers.
Overall, this is a good thing to have if you're at all interested in Norse/Icelandic/Viking mythology. If you're not, I think you can skip it.
For the Nordic Soul, an echo across time..........2006-10-23
I thought nothing like this existed, yet here it is! The Sequentia group sings ancient Nordic mythological poems, in very much the manner of ancient Skalds. The skald was a bard, or troubadour, of ancient Scandinavia. In the Sagas, many of the greatest skalds came from Iceland, a land colonized by Norwegians unwilling to live under the dictatorship of King Harald Harfa-gri (Harald Fairhair). The songs on this album are recited in Icelandic, a language that has changed only slightly from the Old Norse spoken by their ancestors. The style of performance is a specualtion, to a certain degree, but very much like that of most traditional Nordic folk music, traditions that have been passed on for centuries.
Medieval Latin? Music.......2006-10-14
For some reason, it doesn't sound quite nordic to me. Did they really roll their 'R's in the Old Norse, or is Sequentia putting a Latin spin on it? It sounds like Italian opera accompanied by medieval Icelandic instruments.
A great tool for learning as well as the musical enjoyment.......2006-07-11
I am impressed by, actually, the insert book! It has 47 thin pages of history, lyrics, and translation.
I bought this CD because the only foreign language I really retain is from foreign music. The lyrics are decently clear for learning. I didn't expect the insert book to have Icelandic lyrics, but it has that and a translation. There is a summary on each of the poems also.
The music is a bit simple, but the real art is in the song. The singing could even go without instrumentation. The album is 76:52 minutes long.

Album Description
With a unique voice that defies all labels, Sissel can turn her hand to any style of music, from operatic arias and centuries-old classical melodies to traditional folk and pop. USA Today raved Sissel has "one of the most exquisite voices..." and with her new album Into Paradise, she continues to showcases her angelic voice. "My heart is in beautiful music," she says. "Music that touches me." Into Paradise is the follow-up to the 2004 release of My Heart and her 2002 self-titled debut. A PBS Concert Special of the same name was taped in Dalhalla, Sweden, to air on select PBS stations across the nation in March 2006 with tour dates to follow.
Sissel's ethereal voice, coupled with sweeping orchestral melodies, is once again on display with this new recording. Into Paradise was recorded in Norway with the internationally renowned Trondheim Soloists and reflects her passion for music in all its many varied forms. Mozart and Bach rub shoulders with Puccini, while Abba jostles for attention alongside Norse folk tales that have been handed down from generations. Among the performances are "Wachet Auf" by Bach, the otherworldly "Marble Halls" and the haunting "Sancta Maria." Sissel remarked, "I called this program and album Into Paradise because of the blissful feeling I get when I sing these songs. I hope that you will have the same feeling when you join me as we go Into Paradise."
The captivating Scandinavian superstar Sissel has performed at the 1994 Winter Olympics, the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony with Josh Groban, and on Good Morning America with Placido Domingo. Her voice also graces one of the biggest-selling film soundtracks of all time--Titanic. Her first PBS TV special All Good Things was a hit in 2003, spawning her own headlining U.S. tour that garnered critical acclaim. The Chicago Sun-Times dubbed Sissel the "hottest new voice of classical-pop." Of her last album, My Heart, the Philadelphia Daily News stated that she may be the "next Josh Groban" and the Associated Press thought she sang with "pure, effortless style." Recently Sissel toured the world as the lead vocalist in the Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings Symphony concerts and co-headlined several concert dates with friend and past collaborator Placido Domingo. Look for Sissel to launch another U.S. tour in Spring 2006.

Sissel Into Paradise.......2007-01-30
Absolutely gorgeous CD! Sisel sings like an angel! I was completely absorbed into her music. One of the best CD's I have ever listened to.
now I'm in paradise.......2007-01-25
Sissel is amazing on her latest CD. I've met her in person and she is just as dazzling out of the studio as in. Her voice is so pure and soul searching and yet happy. Be ready for some ear candy with this CD! It is what I have playing in my CD player in my car, full volume!
Angel like voice & face.......2007-01-22
I bought this cd on the strength of her live concert in SLC, Utah with the Morman Tabernacle Choir. It was impossible to not fall in love with this beautiful, bell-like, effortless voice. As well, she is very easy on the eye and a joy to watch her sing.
Sissel "Into Paradise".......2007-01-22
Sissel is an exquisite vocalist. This collection will take you "Into Paradise."
Sissel - gifted Norwegian artist.......2007-01-17
I love Sissel's equisite, clear voice. These songs beautifully sung. She has such a vocal range and depth. I would recommend Into Paradise for anyone who loves sacred music.

Customer Reviews:
wow.......2007-05-14
i was blown away when i listen to this album for the first time. the melodies are just astounding. every song on this album stands out. now i know people say this album isn't as good as the original. i think this album is just as good if not better. while the original had the emotion, this one has that and the clearity. i'm not sure if that makes them less "black metal" because its clearer on the re-recording but i could care less. in my eyes theres only good music and bad music.
Outstanding Remake!! The BEST Dimmu Line-up EVER!!! Plus plenty of extras!!.......2007-04-15
As if Dimmu Borgir could not possibly get any better....They return from the Abyss (studio) with a TERRIFIC masterpiece of Re-make of their second album "Stormblast". With a truely ALL STAR LINE-UP featuring the absolutely AMAZING Hellhammer (MAYHEM,ARCTURUS) on drums!!!Old fans and new alike will appreciate this album from beginning to end. The album recording and engineering is absolutely CRYSTAl clear versus the original low buget sound on the original release. With the same lineup as the last 2 releases (with the exception of Hellhammer) You already know You are getting top of the line musicianship from the the start. As some of You new Fans may have noted by the song titles this album is NOT in English like the previous ones (with the exception of "FOR ALL TID" and the original "Stormblast") but don't let that bother You or sway You away from buying this release. Just like the original release Shagrath handles all the lead vocals with plenty of anger and is probably some of His BEST vocals to date!!!Fans of Vortex's clean vocals need not worry He can be heard doing backup harmonies mixed in with Mustis's TERRIFIC classical Keyboard sounds. Vortex does an oustanding job on playing Bass on this album and can be heard doing alot of technical work to match the almighty Hellhammer's drum work through the entire album. Silenoz returns again providing the Band with His Super Heavy guitar sound and incredibly technical guitar work. There are so many rhythm changes on this album You find it hard to believe the Band can play all this without getting lost and makes Me think back to Iron Maiden's classic days of Epic records and genius song writing (ie;"Piece Of Mind" and "Powerslave").Still not sold on this album yet? check out track #8 "Antikrist" for a perfect example of what I mean. But wait there's more!!!....Along with this awsome CD You also get a BONUS DVD that totaly rocks and proves these guys are oustanding musicians on stage as well as in the studio and You also get on the American release 2 Bonus tracks that perfectly matched and blend in with the albums theme and sound!!!Not to mention a limited addition patch for You Dimmu collectors and a promo poster!!Try and find a deal like this with most other bands. You simply can't go wrong with the NEW release of "STORMBLAST".If You like Your Black Metal Medieval,Cold,Dark, and Frosty then don't hesitate. This is truely a fantastic release by a VERY talented group of musician's while We wait for their next studio album (which will also feature this line-up on a permanent basis). If You enjoy this album I urge You to check out Dimmu's other releases as well (ie: "Spiritual Black Dimensions", "P.E.M.","DEATH CULT ARMAGEDDON",and "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant".From the Band that introduced America to the Icelandic word for Dark Castle (Dimmu Borgir) comes another truely perfect Metal album. HAIL DIMMU!!!!!!
dimmu is now cradle 2... but with helhammer, i wonder.......2006-11-19
Hellhammer is also recording with Dimmu for their next album. Apparently some things really meshed with this remake and hopefully Dimmu can come back to their once unquestionable glory. aside from that, i can't add anything that hasn't been said by those with the top reviews for this product/recording. The original Stormblast and For All Tid are masterpieces of black metal... and even i hate to admit it, but i like one of their albums since then (can't remember if it's Enthrone or Puritanical) but i'm not going to say it's black metal, per se. just like Cradle... Cradle's first album was great and it WAS black metal. but somehow, someway, they lost it and went... i still can't explain it or put my finger on it... but it's somewhere that black metal doesn't go, shouldn't go, and is not. ?8|
Everything DIMMU does should be interesting to a DIMMU fan.......2006-10-03
Yeah ok, so the black metal purists will get all pissy and moany about stuff like this. But, the real point is that a re-done album such as Stormblast MMV (which may or may not have needed to be re-done, but who cares, it was!) is still better than most of the garbage "metal" being created today. If you're a metal purist/perfectionist Superbeing and you don't like this, what are you going to do - listen to Britney Spears (yeah, I didn't accidently spell her name right) or Quorn or Blink 751629684 or some shameless nu-metal schlock? Purists need to re-calibrate their judgment basis and just learn to support/enjoy good metal, good music, good whatever. Long live DIMMU.
A Completion, Not A Remake.......2006-07-16
This was my second Dimmu album, after the rather stale Death Cult, and will likely remain my favorite. The songs are fast, intricate, and made complete with beautiful nuances absent on the first recording. Hellhammer's drumming is super-precise, and the mixing of the record is perfect. The original songs are much slower and simpler, sounding much more like demo versions of 2005's finished product. The title track is an epic masterpiece with its haunting outro and crystalline choruses textured with archaic cleans. Even the new song, Avmaktslave, is an excellent piece of songwriting and sits flush with the rest of the album, conveying a mood like a final, desperate battle.
I hope whoever hears this album will not place it on the juvenile blackmetalometer, and judge it strictly as it should be judged - on its boundless musical value.

A must!.......2005-09-26
One of the most beautiful, well-made choral CDs to be released anywhere in recent memory. A must for any choral enthusiast. Wonderfully fresh, gorgeous, and challenging program. One or two of the tracks, such as Busto's Ave Maria and Part's Magnificat are slightly below the choir's standard of excellence, but it is easy to forgive considering the incredible performances on the rest of the CD. The Penderecki, Houkom, and Paulus in particular are absolutely ravishing; I truly don't think choral singing has ever gotten closer to perfection.
dale warland singers.......2005-07-01
once again the dale warland singers have produced a recording of wonderful singing and terrific (while perhaps slightly obscure) repertoire. this eclectic recording of lesser-known choral works is truly worth purchasing. from the simplistic beauty of "little tree" to the fresh dissonances of "the rune of hospitality", this recording is a treasure. however, i would recommend it to those with an experience ear.
Very fine collection - well sung.......2003-06-12
At times I have not been terribly impressed with albums like this from American choirs, but this one is very good indeed. It's certainly an eclectic collection, including music from around the world. The singing is almost always exceptional, with some outstanding interpretations of the lesser-known works. My favourites would have to be the two settings of 'Ave Maria' by Stravinsky and Javier Busto (a Basque composer, who has developed a wonderful choral-writing style). Also of note are Part's 'Magnificat' and Poulenc's 'Quem Vidistes Pastores'.
I highly recommend this recording - as other reviewers have said, it's worth playing all year round (in New Zealand, the stillness is in July anyway - not December!).
One of the great choral recordings.......2002-04-20
Minneapolis-based conductor Dale Warland directs this superb chorus that specializes in 20th-century music. The collection here is an outstanding demonstration of the group's artistry, with some compositions by well-knowns such as Stravinsky and Arvo Prt, and others that are relatively unknown.
It's hard to choose favorites from such a line-up, but the vocal and artistic highlight for me is Penderecki's "Song of Cherubim" - an absolutely stunning piece sung with the precision that is one of the hallmarks of this group. Alf Houkom's "The Rune of Hospitality" has a gorgeous melody that resonated in my head for days afterward. I also like Trond Kverno's magnificent "Corpus Christi Carol," and Stephen Paulus' quietly moving "Evensong." But every single track is a gem, and throughout the program, this remarkable group demonstrates impeccable technique and ensemble unity.
American Choral Classics has done this project justice with sound of crystal clarity and presence. When coupled with such artistry, the result is one of the finest choral recordings I have ever heard.
Don't be deterred by the "holiday" nature of the collection. The music and the performances are of such a high caliber, you'll want to listen to it year-round.
Well-compiled and sung lesser-known works for the holidays........1999-08-27
This is a very well-conceived collection of mostly lesser-known choral gems for the holidays, combined with a few more famous selections. For years, Warland has championed the cause of otherwise obscure choral works, as well as choral composers whose works deserve a broader audience. The benefit to these composers, their works, and the discerning listener, is the consummate professionalism, musicianship, artistry, and craftsmanship with which Dale Warland, his singers, and even the recording engineers and technicians lend to their album projects.
As a former student of Dr. Alf S. Houkom, composer of "The Rune of Hospitality" (found on this recording), and a choral conductor myself, I rejoiced in the knowledge that this work, and others like it, are finally getting the exposure, as well as the professional treatment, that they so richly deserve. Bravo, Mr. Warland, and thank you for the gift of this album. This is truly in the spirit of the season.

Legal Stuff Apart.......2007-04-21
To understand this review, take a look at the reviews of the other volumes in this series...
Some of the music on this series is so weird and beautiful that the composers should be grateful that it is released here. They should think of this series as a sampler which might atract us, the general public, into further investigation of their work, which we most probably would have never had the chance to hear it or become aware of its existence or of the composers/artists. Don't be so greedy... for I believe you have been done a favor. The same goes for the other volumes of this series. TWO THUMBS UP!

Cosmic!!! Mind shattering! Super loud yet super silent. One of the best purchases I have ever made!
Is that violin dying?.......2007-02-12
This is exactly what a box set should do: make you feel like you hit a big fat pot of gold. I am a fan of SOME drone and that definitely helps me to digest the lot of this. At times sounds a little like Biosphere, Hafler Trio, Tod Dockstader and Omit - all of whom I'd recommend also. The music is constantly evolving so even though the music sounds static there is always something to focus your attention on. It will tend to grab your attention and pull you back into it immediately when you hear something new form in the brooding clouds of sound. What it must sound like after getting swallowed up by that smoke monster from the tv show LOST.

Although I'm not as huge of a fan of Supersilent as some, I have to admit my intrigue for the artist simply known as Helge Sten. A member and producer of Supersilent, he also records under the name Deathprod (which was originally the name of his own underground cassette label) and until this year hadn't released any material on CD despite having been working on the creation of different sounds for nearly the past 10 years. With this 4CD self-titled boxset, he lays bare almost 3 hours of music that range from simple frequency experiments to what is some of the deepest, darkest ambient music I've ever heard.
Housed in a matte black box devoid any significant markings and packaged in digipacks of nearly the same quality, the Deathprod boxset looms like a mini-monolith from the movie 2001 One could even view it as a sort of visual representation of Sten's famous "audio virus," a black box (hole) that swallows pure sound and releases it somewhere, anywhere in a completely altered form.
Reference Frequencies is the first disc of the release and covers work from the period of 1991-2001. After opening with the buzzing "Reference Frequencies #3," the disc moves into "6:15," a track mixing a spoken-word poem mixing with very subtle swells of haunting background ambience. The two-part "Recording The Jürg Mager Trio" are even more strange, sounding like improvised Hammond Organ pieces. The disc closes with the beautiful "Dora 3" after a trio of "Reference Frequency" tracks that again make their mark with feedback and noise.
Treetop Drive, recorded during the years of 1993-1994 is an enormous step up from the first disc in terms of both sonics and ideas. The three-part album-titled track is an absolutely stunning triptych of manipulated violin that moves from section to section (slow and swelling to piercing and then back to dark and swarming) with an amazing amount of ease and pushes the limits of one instrument and the sounds it can make. "Towboat" closes the disc with pinched ripples of low-end feedback and the effect is something like listening to whale songs while enclosed in a block of ice.
While it's interesting in theory and for tactile reasons, the first part of the third disc of Imaginary Songs From Tristan Da Cunha is also probably the least interesting. After recording and manipulating the sounds of violin, Sten then had the tracks transferred to phonograph cylinders, creating lo-fidelity copies of the original that crackle and wheeze with the last breathes of life. The tracks only comprise about 8 minutes of the disc, though (at only about 2 minutes apiece, the life span of a phonograph cylinder), and the final track of "The Contraceptive Briefcase II" more than makes up for any weaknesses. A thirty-minute plus epic constructed from bowed glass, violin, and vocals, the track is a very slowly evolving descent into an otherworldly place. In short, it's one of the more genuinely creepy tracks I've ever heard.
Morals And Dogma is the fourth disc in the boxset and also the only one to be made available on it's own. Created between 1994-2000, it's the work that's the most realized in terms of overall construction. "Tron" opens the disc with very subtle washes of deep drones while "Dead People's Things" mixes a looped and decaying violin with more deep murmurs for a track that at 20 minutes doesn't even sound nearly long enough. It's astoundingly beautiful and incredibly mournful at the same time. "Orgone Donor" is more layered violin and might be one of the brighter tracks on the entire set (sounding downright hopeful at times) while "Cloudchamber" closes out the release (and the set) with another series of heady subterranean sweeps.
Out of the 4CDs in the set, I'd have to say that my favorites are easily Treetop Drive and Morals And Dogma, but there are so many great moments located within the set that it's hard to pick them all out. As mentioned above, this is deep, dark listening, and even though this is what many would consider minimal music, there's by no means a shortage of things going on within. This will be on my year-end list.

How touching. Moves you to contemplate in silence..........2005-02-07
It is so impressive that I could find no other reviews about this album. But it is equally impressive that it is not better known. I just got a copy of it from a friend. He sent it to us in the midst of our grief for the passing of my father less than a month ago. When we popped it in the player, we could only hold our breaths and feel as if a musical prayer was being sung for him.
Susanna & The Magical Orchestra come from the same region of the planet as other grand acts full of melancholy come from: Scandinavia. And the voice of Norwegian Susanna Wallumrod clearly approaches the tonality and body of Iceland's Bjork's or Emilana Torrini, though more than once the whole sound they present strongly reminds of Canadian Jane Siberry.
Words do no justice to some works, and this is one case, where I feel that a silent review with a tear of joy shed in retribution may be more worthy of such a touching and spectacular work of art. In the meantime, I will simply stand and contemplate the night while I play it in the background.
