A Seriously Under Appreciated Masterpiece........2007-07-22

Once having heard this album you'll understand why without Astennu (ex. Dimmu Borgir, ex. The Kovenant, ex. Lord Kaos), Dimmu Borgir will never make a release better than Spiritual Black Dimensions. This is Astennu's solo project, with Nagash (The Kovenant, ex. Dimmu Borgir) on vocals. An atomospheric black metal opus, not really symphonic black metal like later Dimmu. Not as gratingly harsh as Carpe's later release "Mirrored Hate Painting", and certainly not like the homage to Floridian death metal as is their "Dreaded Chaotic Reign". Out of all Astennu's work this is most like Lord Kaos' "Thorns of Impurity", in fact borrowing from the riffing on this album on occasions. For comparisons to other work: think Dimmu's "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" with blistering solos and with keyboards used more for ambience than melodic layering. This if for those who appreciate depressive black metal like early Aeturnus or early Blut Aus Nord. In my top five black metal releases of all time.
