Excellent.......2003-09-27
VEO, the main dude behind the whole affair, offers some plaintive vocals that are distorted to generic boredom. Actually, he sounds like a cross between Tears for Fears' Roland Orzabal and The Echoing Green's Joey Belville. Whether this is deliberate or not, I don't know. Regardless, I actually want to hear more of them, but they are so masked by fuzzy electronic gadgetry that I don't know what to make of them. The lyrics offer some hints of competence, but the vocals are pushed so far to the back of the mix I don't know what is being said.
Musically, this album is very well done. I can hear hints of Wilco and O.K. Computer-era Radiohead, which is always a good thing. Opening the album is "Pieces," which is probably going to the first single. Some of the transitions mid-song are jarring (including a fuzzy guitar intro that is totally unrelated to the rest of the song), but the music is superb. Harmonicas overlay nicely produced drums, and the guitar riffs are excellent.
"Fall Apart" is a stirring ballad. This is my favorite track on the album, since it's one of the few songs that can stand on its own. Inspiring, with beautiful organs and pleasant guitars, this song could be another single. "Go Away" and "Air Raid" fit into this category as well.
Perhaps my only real gripe with this album is that very few of the songs stand out on their own as superb. "Fall Apart" and "Air Raid" are the only two that immediately impressed me, yet taken as a whole this is a very strong album. Especially when I consider that this was recorded at Home (which I interpret at VEO's home), my respect for this self-produced album goes higher and higher. In the climate currently facing the music industry today, very few artists have the balls to produce their own albums (even Liz Phair wimped out on that one).
But, self-producing your debut? That's impressive, and given that each song is essentially the sole creation of VEO, I have to give this a lot of respect. As a whole, this album is superb. Though not worth it for any individual track, the overall album is definitely worth getting, if nothing else to show that there is still hope for music in America. The very fact that this isn't a perfect CD goes to show that VEO has a huge potential to make phenominal music as he gets bigger and can muster more resources, since he didn't rely on producers coming in and writing all of his music and playing all of his instruments.
I have to commend Imaginary Maps for an excellent, very indie debut.
