Customer Reviews:
Gary Moore full time in the band.......2007-05-10
You can listen the difference, Gary is one of the best guitar player of the story, this album is great becouse you can hear the real irish rock in the song BLACK ROSE, the italians says "capolavoro", people from Portugal will say: OBRA PRIMA!
You must have this cd!
Thin Lizzy rocks as good as any other classic 70's band........2007-02-20
This band is just so underratted it makes me sick! This album and like 6 others from this band should be in any classic rock collection. Its amazing how great music was till the mid 80's kicked in.Ever since rocks been dead.
Got to Give it Up.......2007-02-10
A really, really good disc by Thin Lizzy. Mesmerizing guitar work by Gary Moore and Scott Gorham throughout this release. Once again excellent songs penned by Phil Lynott and well above average work by drummer Brian Downy. There is no shortage of excellent songs here and my favorites include "Do Anything You Want to", "Waiting for an Alibi", "Sarah", "Got to Give it Up", and "Black Rose". There is also "Get Out of Here", which is well above average listening. Thin Lizzy never disappoints me, other than the fact that there hasn't been enough material released by them. This disc contains hard rock, slow ballads, and great stories to listen to and there is always the superb musicianship and the twin blazing guitars, which has been a trademark since the Mercury days. Recommended!
Best lizzy album ever!.......2005-10-24
This album has everything a music lover needs and wants in a rock album!Heavy songs, funky songs, slow songs, and complicated riffs in songs!Phil can just get all of his ideas out better when someone is pushing him or is just as talented as a writer and musician as he was!Gary Moore was that man on this album, what a great combo just wish Phil could of got him to join and stay with him all through his career and maybe he would still be gracing us with his music today! If you like music(classic rock)this album gives you everything and more!I love this album and recomend it to every music fan!
Thin Lizzy Black Rose Rock Legend is a Rock Classic!.......2005-07-20
This album has a different feel than the other 70's album but
really hits a homerun. from the irish feel of the title track to the catchy rockers it's another lizzy classic and a must have! it also features the amazing guitar work of Gary Moore as well as Scott Gorham who plays great as well. the lead harmonies are
awesome and of course Brian Downey is the best drummer in rock!
Black Rose is one of the best songs ever written!

Customer Reviews:
My Favorite Thin Lizzy album.......2007-01-21
I overlooked this album when it was first released. A major mistake.
It's a true classic with great guitar. It's not an overblown album
It never gets the attention of Jailbreak.
Another major mistake by most rock fans.
a few years later it was in my walkman and keeping me sane at USAF tech school. (early 80s)
Now I have it on CD and it keeps me sane at the Pentagon.
Phil Lynott left this earth too soon.
Great overlooked album.......2004-07-31
My friends told me that Gary Moore was an incredible guitar player. I listened to his "power blues" solo stuff and I thought he was absolutely horrible. I thought his guitar wanking was a disgrace to the blues. I told them I would like to hear him in a different environment. Something more my speed, with old production values and more of a rock and roll type song format. They directed me straight to this album.
This album is incredible. Everything from the doubled up guitars to Phil Lynotts uplifting vocals. This is some of, if not the best rock and roll of the late 70s. If you'd like to hear where bands like "The Darkness" steal their material, this is a good place to start.
Do Anything You Want To...(Christgau be damned).......2004-06-02
The first song on this album, to me, sums up perfectly how this band approached their music. They simply did songs they wanted to do, regardless of what anyone thought.
The guitar work and production values on the album are incredible. This album marks the return of guitarist Gary Moore to the band and he absolutely smokes on this album. Said Scott Gorham in "Guitar" magazine....."To be honest, each guy that came in gave me a kick in the ass. It's a tough position to be in, having to work with a new guy again and having to work up the enthusiasm all over again. But I think I definitely improved 'cause a lot of great players went through that band. Gary Moore, in particular, tightened up my act quite a bit 'cause he was such a precise player. I was playing catch-up ball with him at that point."
This is about as tight as I have ever heard the band play, and I guess credit would also go to Tony Visconti, the producer of this album. I also give much belated praise to Brian Downey on drums, not just on this album, but on all the others as well. It may have been frustrating for him as Thin Lizzy will usually get praise for the gits and lyrics.

The 4 Thin Lizzy studio albums released consecutively....Jailbreak (1976) Johnny the Fox (1976) Bad Reputation (1977) Black Rose (1979)....were rock nirvana for me. (I think Scott's work on "Bad Reputation" makes it the best effort. But then I hear him and the bite of Brian Robertson on the album "Johnny The Fox" and the Gary Moore adrenaline rush on the album "Black Rose", and think wait a minute, maybe these are better....
As a sidenote, I know Scott Gorham and John Sykes doesn't really constitute "Thin Lizzy", but they will be on tour, as Thin Lizzy this summer (2004). Scott Gorham has his own website with the tour info (www.scottgorham.com), and also info on his band "21 Guns".
This band's sound, style, and look (including Jim Fitzpatrick's artwork, which by the way he has his own website also, www.jimfitzpatrick.ie), will always be something special to me.
Classic Thin Lizzy.......2003-12-02
Like most of Thin Lizzy's albums, "Black Rose" includes some great numbers. "Waiting for an alibi", "Got to give it up", and "With love" are all among the best and they feature the characteristic Thin Lizzy sound. Brian Robertson were replaced by Gary Moore but the classic twin guitar approach is still there.
A very good album.......2002-09-25
I almost gave this album 4 stars, but after I wrote my review I realized that it is clearly a 5* album (although Thin Lizzy produced at least 4 other 5* albums that are better than this one). Although this album strikes me as a little more patchy/inconsistent/varied than the golden era albums with Brian Robertson, it is still a fantastic album. The song Roisin Dubh (Black Rose) is a master piece, and exciting montage of Irish culture (music, heros, legends, poets) served up with the full force of Gary Moore and Scott Gorham -- it blew my socks off! Waiting For An Alibi is also one of my favorite tracks. I actually like the soft hit single Sarah too (Phil was reluctant to play this live apparently) - Phil was good at the sensitive stuff as well as the hard rockers. The song "Do Anything you want to do" was a reasonable hit, but strikes me as indictive of the future (more abrasive, less melodic) direction of Lizzy, which I found less inspiring. S&M is over campy and a little jarring but the lyrics are quite clever. Toughest Street is good. Got To Give It Up is very good (pity Phil didn't). Get Out of Here is good. With Love is very good
