If it's sometimes a chore to get past Slipknot's stratified shock-rock shtick, Iowa's nouveau metal-mongers take the occasion of their third album proper to prove there's a genuinely restless, undeniable musical juggernaut beneath the horror-show masquerade. Producer Rick Rubin has honed their modern metal assault to a fine edge here, tempering it with a compelling sense of dynamics missing from all too many similar heavy forgings in the bargain. But credit the band with hammering together the solid foundations of what stands as their best album to date, a collection that succeeds by--surprise--reverting to more traditional song-forms and occasionally operating at something other than a relentless fevered pitch. Call it mainstreaming or a newfound maturity; whatever it is, it pays diverse dividends from the opening cinematic tension of "Prelude 3.0" and paramilitary-cadenced thrill ride "Three Nil" to the moody, rap-thrash single "Duality" and the unlikely, angst-laden pop hooks of "Circle." If that song's cello-inflected atmospherics and lilting Corey Taylor vocals may have the band's faithful initially rubbing their ears in puzzlement, by the time the evocative acoustic guitars, bittersweet harmonies and string quartet break of "Vermilion Pt. 2" rolls around, it's clear this is a band who's challenged itself with broad new horizons--and triumphed. --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
Within the confines, or lack thereof, of VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES) lies a new level of musicianship, achieved through the hard work poured into supporting their self-titled debut and their subsequent hit album, IOWA. Produced by Rick Rubin, Vol 3 not only captures the band's strengths to this point- it sees the spore that is Slipknot exploding in all directions. The songs on this daring effort transcend traditional hard music structure, and will surprise the uninitiated with their dynamic appeal. Masterful guitar work, visceral drum beats, and a newly-expanded vocal range are highlights of this work that Corey Taylor (#8) calls "both brutal and beautiful." Much of the creative inspiration in evidence on the new album is owed to Rubin and his reputedly- haunted mansion, in which the band lived while recording VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES). "You can really feel (the effect of the mansion) on the album. There were ghosts in the machine, in the equipment! . Things would freeze, things would loop for no reason at all. It was strange," adds Taylor. Paul Gray (#2) comments on what Rubin brought to the table
"Rick brought a huge amount of open mindedness - normally 9 different people trying different things can be tough - Rick got us to just throw all our preconceived notions out the window. He was able to integrate bits and pieces of everyone's ideas."
The first single off VOL. 3: (THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES), "Duality" is, "lyrically, what you might think... we've been through a lot as a band and the lyrics really reflect our maintaining faith and the perseverance of all 9 of us," says Joey Jordison (#1). "Duality" represents the album well in its unwillingness to compromise the band's rock foundation and its ability to be aurally appealing and melodic at the same time. Other songs of note on the record, "Before I Forget" and "Vermillion" underline the statement made by "Duality", with their dark melodies and fierce instrumentation. "Before I Forget" is about rising above the bull*#!t and being a person, not a human. It's about saying what you mean and meaning what you say - taking zero bull#!*t." adds Taylor, "and Vermillion is a stalker's love song, shot thru his eyes. It's kind of a does he or doesn't he type thing - it's left open for you to decide."

Haha................2007-06-01
Okay, so I'll be honest, I listened to slipknot back in the day, and Iowa still gets a play every year or so. However, Slipknot has shown on this album, what the definition of garbage really is.
Iowa and their self-titled at least were interesting listens, and made slipknot the forerunneres of nu-metal or whatever name you give to this crap genre of metal. Iowa has some moments that are good, and that album is extremely dark and brooding, even for nu-metal. This album focuses on Corey turning Slipknot into Stone Sour. There are seriously no interesting songs!!!!!!
Sure they get a lot of radioplay and they have more fans than they did, but this band has really turned into garbage. Corey's screaming actually was decent, but terrible in this recording. The acoustic songs are terrible and his new singing voice is just plain bad. Money turned an okay "once a year listen" into this: seriously the worst cd I've ever heard. I'd probably rather listen to William Hung than this because I can at least laugh instead of being bored and sickened with disgust for the nonuse of talent in this recording. But thats all inplying that slipknot has talent: as I said Corey HAD a good screaming voice, but the rest of the band was very questionable from the beginning. 2 percussionists? I can usually only hear 1 and the two of them together equal one half of a bad metal band's drummer. (P.S. Thats pathetic)
I just hope that some of you listening to this abomination use it as a stepping stone to get into actual metal. I got into the Gothenburg bands (In Flames, Dark Tranquility, At the gates, old Soilwork to name a few) and have never looked back into this patheic genre........when you grow up, go to college, and your brain develops, you'll agree with me. My only hope is that at least 1 person looks at one of those aformentioned bands and begins their future listening to good music. My mission will be complete!
For those of you who already have this cd, don't worry, it still has use. I put mine in a buddy's microwave and seeing it shoot sparks and disintegrate will entertain you far more than the cd ever could. I just hope this genre runs out of steam soon, as well as the new slipknot does, and judging by this cd, it won't be long for either.
W00T Slipknot at ther best.....Kill MCR!.......2007-04-17
Ok like the other slipknot reviews i point out im not a kid, 15 acualy.
This is the best Slipknot album there is and there most muture album. The albums prelude is a bit slow, but it get BLOWN OUT with the blister. I have all slipknot cds (including orginal copy of MFKR) and this is best one out. Alot of people go bashing this bad because they listen to crappy nickleback and mcr and poo...well all I have to say is, WTF! Metal fans alot of the time bash slipknot cuz they dont realize that normal metal is a dying breed.... Anyway about the album... The blister, three nil, duality, opium all kick booty tracks that will make u listen to um over and over. Circle, a milder track to calm u down a bit and keeps u listening, Welcome a regular kind of slipknot, but this album can afford it with it mighty powerfulness. Vermillion, one of the weirdest yet cool slipknot songs there is, if ur use to listening to self titled and iowa this song will make you go, wow, thats slipknot. pulse and b4 i forget are also great tracks on this cd that go along with opening tracks. vermillion pt 2, a uber mello song, cool though, the nameless is a awsum track, realy cool good beat and catchy, virus and danger a way to calm u down while sticking to the metal. The band has much improved since there earlier cds and there lyrics r much more tentalizing. Best Slipknot out there, and dont you slipknot bashers go picking on it cuz of ur MCR, I must point out that MCR wasnt all bad, at the start, but has grown into a point that if i hear the black parade i yell at the people playing it and threaten them with slipknot. Slipknot = Best out there right now... hope they remain for a long time.
It'll grow on you.......2007-04-11
At first, I refused to listen to this cd. It was much different from Iowa and there self titled LP. They stopped swearing, but they are still heavy. It took me awhile to get use to this cd but it grows on you after awhile.
dropped back a little/ But i have to say...........2007-03-22
This album was a little on teh down side due to all the off collard songs. There are four good songs on this CD, which isn't as impresive as IOWA which had more like six. Its still a great CD but for me it was a millimeter dropback. this is not there best CD, but I have to say this is pretty impressive.
The best song I would have to say is a debate between duality, and the blister exsists. Iowa is still the best CD.
Great music for angry socially inept teenagers........2007-03-15
I agree with the guy that said that. Now if you are one of those types that are sitting on top of the social pyramid in high school, wearing your overly expensive pink polo shirts with your colars popped listening to Paris Hilton, if you are just some ditzy airhead broad obsessed with pink and pretty boys, or if you are just some 35 year old loser living in his parents basment who is just all stuck in the 70's and the 80's then this kind of music definitely isnt for you!
But if you were like me in high school one of the poor, quiet, socilally inept ones wearing Band T-shirts who wishes all preppies and popular kids would just suddenly burst into flames than this kind of music is the ultimate chill out music!
This what I want to say! I am sick and tired of all this bashing of Nu-Metal! What is so bad about it? And who are you to say that its dead? I listened to this band since I was 12 years old (I am 19 now) and I never got sick of it (this alblum anyways that new stuff is junk)! If you were assumeing I am some teenager who doesnt know real music you are wrong! I like all kinds of metal! If you are going to call me a poser metal head you are wrong! I have respefct for all kinds of metal! I like stuff like Soilwork, Trivium, Dio, Nevermore, Dragonforce, and etc. etc. I like everything from classic metal, power, death, black, nu metal and beyond!
I am just sick of all this bashing of nu-metal. You have no right to judge all nu-metal fans as idiot narrow-minded teenagers! Seriously Its just like me judgeing all you narrow minded classic rockers as 35 year losers who live in their mother's basement! If you were a "true metalhead" as you call yourself surely you would have respect for all kinds of metal! If you are saying nu-metal is talentless you must be a retard! Every genre of music is talented in its own right (except for teen pop and rap.)
Seriously why bash Slipknot if the Backstreet Boys just came out with a new CD? I am sure even you would rather listen to Slipknot than listen to them. I know I would. Like I said I am tired of hearing "Nu-Metal is dead!" So Hair Metal or Glam Metal is not dead? Yeah right! You are saying nu-metal is dead but I dont reckon the genres I just listed stayed for long now did they? Dont get me wrong I like that kind of stuff too.
As time goes by things change! Get used to it! People who were raised around different things like different stuff! I was raised around nu-metal so what do you expect? Although I do like everything else. Seriously I hear alot of people saying extremely cruel and uncalled for things about nu-metal fans and saying things like "I hope all u nu-metal fanz get AIDZ" or "I wont 2 kill mislef wen I heer dis!!" I think it is wrong to hate people just because they like a different genre of music than you do! So wish such a terrible thing just because I like a different kind of music than you do? You are sick! And if you are going to kill yourself just over music then you must be a retard. I listen to whatever kind of music I want! And If you have a problem with that you can shove it!
So what if Slipknot sounds like every other rap metal band. Hey most hair metal bands sound exactly the same as eachother so there. Yeah so they rip off of Korn and so on. Then again what band doesnt these days. Seriously who's to say what "True Metal" is and isnt? Who makes all these rules anyways? Whos to say whether or not a band has talent? If they are better than N'Sync who cares? Sorry about my rambleing. I have no other place to post such thoughts because I hate myspace! Now about Slipknot. Yeah I know they sound like every other nu-metal band but hey who cares! I dont even know what I just said...

Decent album with some cool bonuses .......2007-03-09
I liked it and you probably will too if you are a Slipknot fan. My only advice is wait till the price drops to about 18 dollars. I paid roughly 22 bucks which is 4 dollars too much in my opinion. My logic for this? Lets just say there are only about 18 good tracks and at a dollar a track...well you do the math.
Worth the price for the bonus disc alone!.......2006-06-10
I can't say I've always been a huge Slipknot fan, but I really liked the version of Vermilion I heard on the Resident Evil 2 soundtrack, so I figured I'd track it down (no pun intended). I dithered and never really did anything about it until a Slipknot CD entered my gold box selections on Amazon one day. It was actually "Iowa", but after checking it out along with the various other offerings, I decided I'd really rather have this disc. Couldn't be happier with my choice. Before when I was pissed, I'd throw on some Rage Against the Machine or Tool or Nightwish or Opeth - now, it's all about Slipknot. Haven't had another CD in since I got it. In fact, 'Danger - Keep Away' reminds me a lot of something I'd hear from Opeth, and I'm also really hung up on 'Duality'. Of course, 'Vermilion' was what I bought it for (vocals remind me of [...]), but I enjoy all three versions on this 2 disc set. The different remixes and the live tracks fromt the 2nd disc help to showcase their range - which, I must admit, I didn't think was this good. I sold them short, and I shouldn't have. Shame on me - this disc has convinced me that Slipknot has talent aplenty and I will be back for more.
Slipknot's soft side...............2006-04-18
Dont get me wrong, this is a excellent album but it is softer and shows another side of Slipknot, the bonus disc show Slipknot's true potentiol. Scream and People=Sh*t (Live) are the best in the bonus disc. In vol3. Before I Forget, Duality,
Opium of the People, Pulse of the maggots and the nameless are
the best. For hardcore slipknot fans, yoou might wanna borrowit from someone. But if you wanna get into Slipknot, start with this. Overall, good album, hard to compete with Iowa
Great album--Special Edition makes it better!.......2005-12-30
Okay first things first. To all the people who say that this is Slipknot's worst album, and to the people who called other people liars because they said that this was a good album, just be quiet now and save yourself the rest of the embarrassment. Just because Corey doesn't scream the "F" word every 17 and a half seconds doesn't make this a bad album. Just because Corey doesn't cuss at all, with the exception of 'b!tch3d' in "Duality"--which is hardly even discernable--doesn't make this a bad album. Personally, it shows me a more mature Slipknot than we got on Iowa and the self-titled album. Cussing does not make an album good or bad. Let me repeat myself. CUSSING DOES NOT MAKE AN ALBUM GOOD OR BAD! Some people have a problem figuring out what that means. I, personally, like this album, as I do the other 2 'Knot albums. I cannot wait for the next Slipknot album. (There is one coming out in 2006, just to let people know.)
an open minded review of not just this album, but the state of metal in general.......2005-08-07
Slipknot:the most loved and hated band in the world, depending on who you are. Am I a maggot? I supose, minus the fanatical devotion. Do all other bands suck compared to this band? nope. I guess what makes me different is I have a broad musical palate. As a brief psuedo review of this cd though, others have said it shows the band growing and maturing, almost as though they are trying to move beyond the "teen angst" fan quotient, snd there are almost balads on this cd. Perhaps the side projects have influenced the band, who knows(I'll check them out and edit this review after I do) The band still packs a nhilistic, misanthropic punch,to be sure, and the bonus disc is a great addition for completists. buy this, listen to it openly, you may be suprised.
Metal as a musical genre is really changing,I'm old school(80s thrash and black metal mostly) and bands such as Korn,Mudvayne, Slipknot and Mushroomhead,as well as Killswitch Engage have totally revolutionized(some say destroyed) metal. Metal is a trend again,it's back, angry, and coming for you...you have been warned!

Customer Reviews:
Did they even try?.......2005-03-18
I like Vol. 3. But I really dont like what they did with this special edition. We get seven new tracks, they begin with two bad B-sides that were cut from the original for good reason. Then we get the single version of Vermilion, which is a shorter version of the one on the cd. They basicaly cut the guitar solo in half and cut out the last few second of Corey shouting "she isn't rea"; so pretty much is an inferior version to the actual song.
After that we get the only thing worth listening to, a full length version of Danger-keep away. However, this means that they released an incomplete version of the song on the original... Which if anything degrades the original cd, I dont know why they would release an incomplete version of a song on one of their cd's, but apparantly that is what they did.
Then we get three live tracks from Iowa, not live tracks from Vol. 3, oh no, we get songs played live from their last dvd, the only difference is that we can't see them perform and the quality is worse because its on a cd.
If you already have the original Volume 3, and if you like it, then I recomend either downloading or borrowing this cd to get the full length version of Danger-keep away. Otherwise this cd isn't worth your time.

I'm a Slipknot true fan, I got all CD's, Singles, and DVD's
I bought the first version of this CD and I was one of the first buying Vol.3 (The Subliminal Verses), but after that I have the surprise that they put a f**king new disc with bonus tracks, that I already has in singles, but with a new cd cover.
I'm a Maggot and is part of it to have this new s**t, but i'm sick of this, better to make other Slipknot album than making the true maggots spend so much cash in the same songs in diferent CD's
In general this album is really, really good and better if you don't buy the first version, so you don't make of this an angry situation. BUY IT, Im going to buy the songs I already have again, until I got all the things of Slipknot!! Stay (SIC)!!!

Vol 3: The Subliminal Worses.......2005-02-22
Slipknot rule, there's no doubt about it but this album they put out just plain sucks. I am a die hard Slipknot fan and gave this cd many chances and I get more disappoinent everytime I hear it. It's garbage. Not impressed. We all know that they can produce much, much better music than this. If you like soft music such as Dave Matthews, than this cd is for the easy listening.
F*^% YOU ALL THAT HATE THIS ALBUM.......2005-01-28
Sure its all Mainstream and not as hard as you thought but it is a good metal album and this album is not worth 2 stars dude. Its worth more than 5, the orginal version is 5 this one with the extra tracks i must say liek 8 becuz i have heard all these songs even tho i dont own it i heard them b4 they came out onto this cd and the tracks are amazing, true maggots will love this
dont forget SlipKnoT is on tour now with Shadows Fall and Lamb of God!
should've been a good stone sour album.......2005-01-27
This album really SUCKS! But if it weren't for the songs like SCREAM and the live songs, I should've given this album 1 star. Too commercialized....

Get for the 2 Vermillion tracks..........2004-12-08
The only reason to get this cd, is for a few songs on it. Vermillion pt. 1, is the main reason. Vermillion pt. 2, is the other half of that main reason.
To anyone who says that they're the exact same song sept 2 is acoustic, no..you're wrong. Pt 2, has totally NEW verses, and is shorter. But yes, 2 is acoustic.
These 2 songs (to me) both really showcase the best of both worlds on this album. Vermillion 2 showcases the melody in Vol. 3, and put to good use as well. Vermillion 1 (which is actually longer than it is on the music video by about a minute or 2), showcases the best of the "hardcore" on the album. It mixes melody, with really really sinister riffs.
These 2 songs are the best of what's on the cd, as per Scream..yes i've heard it, and well..if you're upset this album is too melodic, Scream will make you happy, it's extremely un-melodic!
Question: Has anyone else noticed that Vermillion part 1's video, uses a whole different version of the song? It adds better and more heard bass skills to the part before Corey says "she's the only one who makes me sad" after both the first 2 verses, and during the end, has what sounds like a Sax playing. That and the vocals in some parts, are slightly different, such as the ending when corey is calmly saying "She isn't real", it's...different, sounds more clear. Plus, he screams in parts, he doesn't on the vol. 3 cd/Resident Evil 2, ST. The vid version is the best IMO.
is it worth it?.......2004-11-02
i love this cd and the verison w/o scream, i thought that scream was a VERY nice addtion to the cd, but the question is, is it worth the almost $20 for that song? I don't know, if your a die hard fan w/ the extra cash, go for it! otherwise just stick to the simple cd, it's not worth being broke over
i live in japan.......2004-07-26
i bought this cd a week before it was released in the states. believe me it blew me away. to me it sounds like a mix between slipknot and stonesour. the extra song, scream, is one of the best on the c.d. i bought the cd here in japan for 2300 yen. which equals about 22 dollars. so do the math. is it worth an extra 25 dollars for one song?? i am a die hard maggot and thankfully i didn't have to decide.
alright im back.......2004-06-22
i finaly found out it was scream, but i went somewhere else and got it all cheaper and cheaper shipping so it was all good, the album is awsome, the track scream adds the best song to end with yet u want more after that track cuz it gets you sooooo pumped up!
Bonus track is called"Scream".......2004-05-26
Yes, the bonus track on this Japanese version of the album is called Scream. This album rules!!! Every die-hard 'knot fan should buy this album. Sell something if you have to, but buy this album.
