Long derided by critics as unoriginal and uninspired, Saliva has gained popularity among legions of rock & roll fans eager to celebrate good times with a bottle of domestic beer at their sides and their fists thumping high, high in the air. Blood Stained Love Story seems unlikely to change critical minds--much of the album, including "Ladies and Gentlemen," "Never Gonna Change" and the unimaginatively titled "Twister" comes off like warmed-over '80s hair metal. While it's true that the record features blazing guitar leads and drumming that'll hasten the beats of the average rock-starved heart, it seems unlikely that it--or the band that created it--will make an entry into the pantheon of timeless rock & roll. Thoroughly disposable. --Jedd Beaudoin
Album Description
For gold-selling Memphis turbo-rockers Saliva, the past couple years of their decade-long career have brought an ocean swell of change. One or more members have had children, stopped drinking, ended longterm relationships, gotten married and/or left the group, and each instance has been accompanied by a new sense of clarity.
As a result, Saliva's fifth album Blood Stained Love Story resounds with a previously untapped level of passion, energy, sincerity and diversity, not to mention an undeniable melodicism that will endear the band to anyone that feels any sort of connection between reality and music.
"I think we've all been through a blood stained love story of one type or another," says frontman Josey Scott. "It's kind of a metaphor for how things can be a certain way for so long, and then within a day, they just change and you're on this whole other path."
Blood Stained Love Story is an album of growth, a realization that there are more important things in life than cover stories, photo shoots and big Hollywood parties. But while it may be more mature than Saliva's past efforts, it's no less turbulent.

Recent discover of an instant classic.......2007-05-20
Every once in a while, a band releases a CD that is great from beginning to end. Saliva did that with "Blood Stained Love Story". Although my first experience with this band is on this CD alone, and I have not yet had the pleasure of experiencing their previous works, I am looking forward to enjoying their other efforts as well. I am not one of these people who expect a band to have a similar sound throughout their careers, to me that shows no artistic venture. So, when any band releases a new CD, I enjoy it for the fact that it is a new production. Whatever it is that they (Saliva) have done in the past will be enjoyed as the separate works of art they have produced for my listening pleasure. "Blood Stained Love Story" is a great introduction to Saliva's music for me, and I look forward to their future works as well.
Saliva is back with a decent album.......2007-05-01
Two and a half years since thier last album (and worst) the boys from Memphis are back with a decent album. Better than their "Survival of the Sickest" (3 stars) but not as good as "Every 6 Seconds" or "Back into Your System" (both 4.5 stars). The main reason, to me anyway, is the growing amount of slower songs the groups puts out. Shorter than their other albums with only 10 songs, 1 is almost a classic, 1 I skip, 5 are good and the other 3 are ok. While it's a decent album and a good one for their fans, I prefer their earlier work more.

Saliva flirts with power ballads and mainstream rock.......2007-04-26
THE BAND: Josey Scott (vocals), Wayne Swinny (guitars), Dave Novotny (bass), Paul Crosby (drums & percussion).
THE DISC: (2007) 10 tracks clocking in at approximately 40 minutes. Included with the disc is a 10-page booklet containing song titles/credits, song lyrics, one band photo and thank you's. All songs written by Saliva and producer Bob Marlette. Recorded at The Blue Room in Woodland Hills, CA. Label - Island Records.
COMMENTS: A lot has happened since this band formed in '96 in Memphis, TN. From a nice beginning in the alternative/nu-metal/post-grunge category in the late 90's, to a more calm and slick, well produced rock album in 2007. Saliva no longer belongs with the nu-metal acts like Korn, P.O.D., Mudvayne, Papa Roach, and Linkin Park. Instead, they can join the likes of Nickelback, Creed, Puddle Of Mudd, Buckcherry and Staind. Not necessarily a bad thing - just depends on your individual tastes. Fans that heralded their older albums as their best material will no doubt cry SELL OUT on "Blood Stained Love Story". I, for one, was not a huge fan of their first (major) album, "Every Six Seconds" (2001). I've never been a nu-metal fan, so most of this disc went right by me. "Back Into Your System" (2002) still may be their most complete album to date... and even in '07, it's still my favorite of theirs... balancing post grunge, hard rock, and minimizing the rap (not to mention one of their best songs in their catalog, "Superstar II"). Saliva's 3rd album "Survival Of The Sickest" (2004) is a good album, but the writing was on the wall - and you could see the band was leaning toward mainstream rock - almost no rap or nu-metal feel, and the emergence of the rock power ballad(s). And that brings us to "Blood Stained Love Story". Two immediate hits with "Ladies And Gentleman (reaching #1 on the US Mainstream Rock chart) and "Broken Sunday" (reaching #34). To be honest, when I heard first heard "Ladies And Gentlemen", it really caught my attention because I thought it was a new song from Doug Pinnick and King's X. Both these songs are worthy of being overplayed - wonderful melodies and crunchy guitars. I predict the next hit might well be the first ballad on the album, "Never Gonna Change". Other highlights include the hard rocking "King Of The Stereo", the mid tempo rocker "One More Chance", and the heaviest tune on the disc, "Black Sheep". Perhaps a few too many rock ballads here ("Going Under", "Starting Over" and "Here With You" to name a few more), but over all a very listenable album. This is the 1st Saliva album where I don't find myself skipping tracks. Side note: I never really gave Saliva much credit in the beginning. But, hearing their music on several Playstation-2 games, on ESPN Sportscenter, several movie soundtracks (Spiderman, Daredevil, Fast & Furious, Talladega Nights, etc), having the song "Ladies And Gentleman" used for several professional sports team pregame warm-ups, and recently opening for Aerosmith and Kiss - I'm convinced Saliva has made a name for themselves [...]. Good album, though not what I was expecting - in a good way (4+ stars).
A Good Album.......But Could Be A lot Better!!!!.......2007-04-11
I will admit I've been a Saliva fan since "Every Six Seconds" first came out, But I've also wondered why they can't seem to make another record as good as that one. As good as 2002's "Back Into Your System" was it never came close, in fact it included the first of their songs that I got very tired of hearing (Always) and the second (Rest In Pieces)...Even though they are both great songs. Fast forward to 2004 and we got "Survival Of The Sickest" an album that was a step forward, but still not great. It had kind of a cool southern rock feel to it at times. Which isn't a bad thing, but it still didn't feel like a genuine Saliva record to me.
So, When I first heard that "Blood Stained Love Story" was coming out in January, I got really excited. I figured maybe this was what I had been waiting for, a return to form. However, when I heard the album I was once again disapointed. It starts out okay....with the first single "Ladies And Gentleman" and "Broken Sunday"....Then it takes a wierd turn downward with "Never Gonna Change" which sounds like it could have easily been done by Clay Aiken or any of the other American Idol contestants. It's a slow song that sounds like a drum machine behind it, instead of Paul Crosby. But, I made myself listen further and It improves slightly with "King Of The Stereo" perhaps the only song that sounds like a saliva song on the whole disc. "One More Chance" and "Going Under" are both pretty descent songs, but when I listened to "Twister" I remember thinking, What the hell happened? It has to be the worst track on here, it's a very experimental song that I have yet to explain. It is however the records closer that is the most impressive, "Here With You" could very well be the nicest, most heart-felt thing this band has written. In one part he sings "I will come to you in a dream my friend, To love you when I'm gone". Overall this album is okay....But not great. This band could have done a whole lot better and I'm still hoping that the next album will be. On average, I wouldn't recommend this whole album to anyone, just the last song. If you want to hear Saliva at their best...I recommend the debut album, with that one you can't go wrong.
Stand Out Tracks:
"Here With You"
"King Of The Stereo"
"Broken Sunday"
"Ladies And Gentleman"
Copycats should be their name.......2007-04-07
Every song on this CD sounds as though these guys sat down and listened to other bands and then tweeked the tune a little. The second song on the CD sounds like Animals from Nickelback. If you know who Galactic Cowboys are then you'll recognize Ladies And Gentlemen etc... The best song might be Blacksheep but every song on here got copyed from someone.

The Best Metal Recording of All Time!!!.......2007-06-02
Stained Class is in many ways a groundbreaking album. It introduced in my opinion the beginning of speed/thrash(Exciter).Rob Halford's vocals are almost unbelievable,I've yet to hear anything that compares. The guitar soloing is 3 levels above anything else at that time.Thirty years later it still stands out as a phenomenal metal showcase of vocals and guitar .This might be the most influential metal album of all time!!P.S.The guitar solo on "Beyond the Realms of Death" is considered by many the best metal solo of all time.
Surely it's Stained Glass not Class.......2007-05-01
In the song Halford sings about a king in stained glass.["..and now he's just a stained glass king.."]He clearly enunciates "G".It doesn't make any sense otherwise. He's referring to the kings and queens that you see in English cathedral windows.Even the cover art shows a modernist stained glass window style.I'm sure that funny little owl like creature that you see in the artwork is in a famous stained glass cathedral window in perhaps Coventry Cathedral??That's around about where these guys were born.I suggest a listen and also read the lyrics.
"Stained Class" TOWERS in the Priest Catalog.......2007-04-07
In the late 70s Judas Priest released three albums in three years which ingeniously set the foundation for power/epic/speed metal (whereas Black Sabbath earlier forged the foundation for doom/stoner metal). These three historic albums are: SAD WINGS OF DESTINY (1976), SIN AFTER SIN (1977) and STAINED CLASS (1978). All three albums sound completely different production-wise and song-wise, but they all have this in common: They're mature, innovative, dynamic works of utter brilliance. In other words, if you're only familiar with Priest's dumbed-down, bubblegum metal 80's output, e.g. "Breaking the Law," "Living After Midnight" and "You've Got Another Thing Coming," you're in for a shock with these three masterworks (Don't get me wrong, I love BRITISH STEEL, but it's essentially kindergarten metal compared to these three late 70's releases).
Another aspect that I appreciate about Priest's brand of metal is that it never has that stoner vibe. Listen to practically any Priest CD and you'll ascertain that these guys are professional musicians/artists and not drug-obsessed losers that just escaped mom's basement.
Here's a run-down of the songs featured on STAINED CLASS:
(1.) "Exciter." This is a smokin' speed metal track. If you wanna know where speed metal originated look no further (also check out "Let Us Prey" from SIN AFTER SIN). Even so, I was never a fan of "Exciter." I respect it greatly but it never tripped my trigger, if you know what I mean. Personal Rating: 3.5/5 Stars.
(2.) "White Heat, Red Hot." This one has a catchy mid-paced main riff. They coulda done better with the words of the chorus, but I still like it. Personal Rating: 4/5 Stars.
(3.) "Better By You, Better Than Me." This is pretty much the big 'hit' of the album. It's a cover a a Spooky Tooth song, which I've never heard. Simple, unique, catchy and well-done. Personal Rating: 4.5/5 Stars.
(4.) "Stained Class." This song probably won't blow you away at first, but after some time you'll see its brilliance. It's epic! One thing's for sure, no one ever sang like Rob Halford sings on this song before. Personal Rating: 5/5 Stars.
(5.) "Invader." This one's obviously about a UFO sighting and alien invasion. I never liked it. The chorus is just dumb. It's simply filler fodder. Personal Rating: 2/5 Stars.
(6.) "Saints in Hell." Whoa! This one's incredible. Sci-fi/fantasy lyrics about a stolen bell and the saints that go to hell to retrieve it (huh?). Rob was obviously smokin' something when he came up with these lyrics. Still, "Saints in Hell" is metal of the highest order. Personal Rating: 5/5 Stars.
(7.) "Savage." A very unique and respectable number in the Priest catalog, albeit dated. The lyrics address the intrinsic evils associated with imperialism and cultural contamination. Personal Rating: 4/5 Stars.
(8.) "Beyond the Realms of Death." Brace yourself, 'cause this is essentially the "Stairway to Heaven" of heavy metal. Intriguing subject matter and musical composition of the highest caliber. Numerous metal bands have tried to remake this song in their own image. Queensryche did it with "The Lady Wore Black," Iron Maiden did it with "Children of the Damned" and Metallica did it with "Fade to Black" -- all three great songs, but they stand on the foundation laid by "Beyond the Realms of Death." By the way, guess who wrote the music for "Beyond"? None other than drummer Les Binks! I couldn't believe it when I found out; I thought for sure this was the product of Tipton/Downing. This definitely proves that Binks was far more than just a phenomenal drummer. Personal Rating: 5/5 Stars.
(9.) "Heroes End." This one definitely has a dated vibe, but remains unique and respectable in the Priest catalog. The lyrics address the shame of musical legends that prematurely die (e.g. Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, etc.). The song is worth it just for the powerful post-chorus section with its expertly done trade-off vocals. Personal Rating: 4/5 Stars.
BONUS TRACKS: (1.) "Fire Burns Below." For once we get a bonus track that is actually worth listening to! This is an older song that they essentially went back to and "fixed" up. Good, unique, mellow, emotional song which utilizes acoustics and a drum machine. Personal Rating: 4/5 Stars. (2.) "Better By You, Better Than Me" (Live). Decent live cut, but not as good as the studio version.
FINAL ANALYSIS: You simply can't go wrong with Judas Priest's three late 70's releases SAD WINGS OF DESTINY, SIN AFTER SIN and STAINED CLASS. All three are innovative, mature and brilliant; they TOWER in the Priest catalog. MUST HEAR CUTS: "Stained Class," "Saints in Hell" and "Beyond the Realms of Death," followed closely by "Better By You, Better Than Me."
Dark, Sublime, Amazing!.......2007-04-03
Darker, faster, and far more morbid than its predecessor, Stained Class is by far one of the strongest and most influential metal albums of all time. Not hindered by age or changing trends, this amazingly atmospheric album quite possibly is the most depressingly morose metal release ever. Many metal album sound depressing, this one feels depressing. Sad Wings Of Destiny may have been the dream of morbidity, Stained Class is the the realization of that dream. This is the last album to sound completely uncompromised before the Priest became anthemic.
One of The Best 70's Albums.......2007-01-28
Many of the other reviews give many comments on the songs etc, so I'll write about some of the esoteric stuff I haven't read here. For those that don't know what the hard rock scene was in 1978 when this album came out, this was a time before video games were available, let alone computers, and VHS recorder/players (the predecessors of DVD's) were only at universities or other institutions that had money for the cost of these relatively rare machines of that time. 1978 is when music and the stereo ruled. You had the turntable, receiver, and stereo speakers with 12" woofers and you got together with friends, put on some awesome rock album that just came out and you *listened* to the music. This is a time when music bands and concerts ruled. Judas Priest's Stained Class is one of the albums that ruled at that time.
When Stained Class came out, the recording technology blew away anything before it. Recording technology improved immensely during the 70's and you can hear the improved sound between this record and previous Judas Priest albums or even any early 70's progressive rock album such as that by Yes, etc. Some may have written that the recording sounds bad, but believe me, when this record came out, it was cutting edge. This brings up a good point. This was for many years one of my 10 desert album discs or if you could only bring 10 albums/CD's before the planet exploded, this would have been one of them, but after multitudes of listenings, even I can say this album is somewhat dated. So for younger listeners this may not be as awesome as some of the reviews let on, those reviews are more of a statement of the album's importance when it was released and may be more for those who were around when this came out. For those that don't want something dated, there is a Tribute to Judas Priest: Legends of Metal that have more modern bands playing, but this too is from 1997 and also slightly dated, but there may be other more up to date tribute CD's. From what I've heard, many bands that play JP covers, revere the band, and play great versions of the songs, albeit with their own style.
Stained Class was supposed to be a takeoff on the term "stained glass." I must have listened to the title track dozens of times, but could not understand what Rob Halford was singing on that song. There are websites that can be found with a web-search for those that want to know the lyrics to the songs. The lyrics, however, of the juggernaut of the album, Beyond the Realms of Death, were more or less clear. Others have written that this song was about suicide, and to me, it was a bit more than that. It was about someone that goes insane, or withdraws into their own mind leaving the outside world, depending on your point of view. Whether this person kills themselves or withdraws so much into themselves that they're dead to the outside world is unclear.
There is also the drugginess associated with the album. From the possible meaning from Exciter of: "when ignition hits you", to Beyond the Realms of Death where: "He had enough..." sounded to me as "He had an up/he couldn't take anymore." Then there's the album cover itself. Whoa! Again, now it may seem moot, but at the time, it was this wild up-to-date psychedelic album cover with all sorts of "images" reflected off of the supposed metallic skull, with two beams of light entering it, and one beam exiting. This was a time when music was still released on records and the larger album art work allowed one to appreciate it more.
Until relatively recently I didn't know Better By You, Better Than Me was a cover song, and I much didn't care, and thought it fit in well with the style of the album. I would recommend the remastered versions of any 70's album, as the standard CD transference missed overtones that made the songs on the album so awesome. The two bonus tracks, I have read elsewhere, are first an outtake from the 1987 Ram It Down sessions, and the live tune from a 1990 L.A. concert.
For those that might be interested in Judas Priest's three earlier albums, Rocka Rolla, Sad Wings of Destiny, and Sin After Sin, I would recommend the Live: Unleashed In the East instead. The live album offers good performances of the songs, much tighter, crisper, and most of their relevant songs from the earlier albums. Most of Judas Priest's subsequent albums go downhill from the Live album. I looked for a Best of Compilation that had JP's best songs, Exciter, Stained Class, and BTROD, and there weren't any and realized that Stained Class is JP's Best Of album.
Enjoy!

Great Bay Area Band.......2007-04-25
Stained Glass 66-69, one of the better bay area bands. 2 LP's never took off, likely due to the huge number of other bands being showcased in the bay area. Saw them many times in my youth. The Whatz it club, Contentental Ballroom, Very tight band, formally known as the Trolls. Jim Mcpherson the bass player went on to play with Cooperhead after Stained Glass broke up. They sounded like a mix of Beatles-Springfield-Cream. Lot of earlier 45 stuff also on this CD. I give it high marks.

Found Some Good Gospel Bluegrass.......2005-08-11
This was released "way back" in 1991, so I was not sure what I would find. Anyways, I was pleasantly surprised and out of the 24 songs, there were 9 that I gave 5 stars and downloaded to my MP3 player. That's a pretty good average for a single CD! Many of the selections were unique in that they were not "new" versions of old songs.
Old timey songs of faith.......2004-05-02
I pulled "Stained Glass Hour" off a dusty shelf for the first time in years, recently. I'd forgotten just how special this CD is. I consider a compilation CD good if it has four or five keeper tracks, excellent with eight to ten. I find an astonishing 15 out of the 24 songs here worth a trip out to my mp3 player.
I can't help but tap my foot and join in on the choruses of the infectious bluegrass bounce of J.D. Crowe & The New South on "Crying Holy", the Bluegrass Cardinals on "Journey to My Savior's Side", and the Bluegrass Album Band's "Talk It Over With Him". There's also quiet, thoughtful witnessing for those in spiritual crisis in Boone Creek's "Drifting Too Far From the Shore". Another highlight is the plaintive, unadorned vocals balanced with Allen Shelton's beautiful banjo line in "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow"; Hazel Dickens reminds us that life and its earthly blessings are brief and fleeting, but the eternal beacon of the Promised Land can guide us through the rocky shoals. Two special favorites of mine among the many other gems found here: the crystal clear four-part harmony of the Johnson Mountain Boys in the rapture song, "Shouting in the Air" and the aching vocal blend of Ricky Skaggs and friends in "Talk About Sufferin'" Different media drive the message home to different worshippers: for me, friends, any one of these songs carries more weight than a half hour sermon from the pulpit!
This CD has my highest recommendation for fans of traditional gospel, bluegrass or old-timey music. You will surely find several special tracks to call your own.

This is an excellent selection of original and heart warming songs. You will be spiritually blessed listening to these. The artists are absolutely superb! Highly recommended!

GREAT!.......2007-03-18
This is everything that their previous CD wasn't. A great gothic rock release. I'd heard alot about them over the years, but was just alittle dissappointed when I got "escapexstacy". It was too 80's soft rock. It didn't challenge. I still liked it though.
THIS CD has alot more of a harder groove, and the songs themselves are catchy and razor-sharp. The vocals are a great improvement. I anticipate many plays in my car stereo.
Never heard the first album.......2006-10-07
I really like this album. Metal heads have a bad tendancy to sub catagorize everything and if it isn't in a sub category then they hate it. Well this is like that it's just a Metal CD not too light not to hard. Just good guitar and drum work with good vocals and good songwriting.
It's just not the same..........2006-10-04
Remove the vocals and the style is there. It is unmistakenly Poisonblack. But add the vocals (no longer those of Leppäluoto) and what we once knew as Poisonblack is gone.
This CD has some great guitar work and some catchy riffs, but Leppäluoto's voice is what made the first CD so great. Now we have Poisonblack style with Sentenced vocals -- it's just not the same.
.......2006-08-28
This is lightweight stuff, alterna-pop music disguised under the Metal banner. Poisonblack continues to be a more an accessible unit that strongly employs melody in every aspect of the music-from the clean vocals to the constant keyboard passages. People have compared them to Sentenced in the past, and while said band is even softer in their musical delivery and pretty much overated, Poisonblack injects a bit more of life into their songs. It doesn't really help their cause, though. You'd have to be a follower of the rock-oriented bands of the Metal genre to really like what this band has to offer. Just don't call it Metal, as it gives a misinterpretation of the whole genre as a whole.
Major Bummer........2006-08-27
Well, I knew it wasn't going to be the same with Ville on vocals. I don't like Sentenced, so I hoped he would emulate Juha-Pekka Leppäluoto's voice. He didn't. It bugs me. Knowing this, I tried to get into Charon (J. P.'s voice is what I adore about Poisonblack). However, Charon's songwriting isn't dark enough to support J. P.'s voice! So, unfortunately, "Escapexstacy" is all that appeals to me from this group of Finish artists. This one was a disappointment, sonically. I love the lyrics, but I miss the powerful vocals.

Complete creative control + songwriting talent = good disc!.......2003-12-04
I was really surprised when I saw "Stained Glass Window" on the shelves of my local record store. I thought that Mila Mason was one of the many promising artists whose career successes would never quite match her talent. Hopefully I'm wrong about that. Mason has a unique voice that's part Chely Wright twang and part Tanya Tucker with sort of a smokey tone all her own, so she doesn't really sound like anything on the radio right now.
This CD has sterling production, and most of the songs are very well written. For someone who didn't write any of the songs on her first two albums, Mason has remarkable depth and grace as a songwriter. Not every song is a winner...the first two songs get the album off to an average start before the really good songs kick in, but from track 3 on, this cd is very good.
The songs run the gamut from ballads to straight ahead country and even a few Shania Twain style pop songs. "Stained Glass Window" is a great, sensitive country ballad very much in the Martina McBride message song sort of vein. "Love Anymore" is very much in the happy, poppy Shania Twain vein. "Somebody Must Love Me" is a great duet with Jason Grainger, a guy I've never heard of, but he's a very good vocalist, and I'd probably buy his CD on the strength of this one performance. "Loveazy" is a goofy uptempo song with a great vocal performance.
Aside from her fine songwriting chops, Mason's voice is in excellent form. Her style is very subdued, letting the songs and the music carry the day, but her unique voice unifies the mood of the album. When she gets playful, like in "Loveazy," you get another side of her voice that's joyous and fun. That said, the first few times I listened to the CD I kept waiting for Mason to cut loose like she did on her CD "The Strong One." When she chooses to belt out a song, she can really be commanding, but the focus on this album is more on intimacy. It's like having a heartfelt conversation with a friend instead of sitting in an audience being pelted with music notes.
I really like this cd and gave it four stars only because of the weak start of the album. I'm amazed at Mason's songwriting chops, and this CD blows away her two albums for Atlantic. (That said, those CDs do have some amazing cuts on them, like "Dark Horse" and "Blood Simple", and if you want to hear another side of Mason's unique voice, you should try the song "The Strong One". If you like "Stained Glass Window", definitely pick up the first two!)
Mila's New Album.......2003-10-20
This CD is a wonderful collection of songs written by Mila herself. The songs are beautiful!!
This new project ROCKS!!!!!.......2003-10-18
This album has been long awaited and totally worth the wait. Mila is not only an incredible artist but a gifted writer. There isn't a single track that doesn't blow you away and show off Mila's voice. The duet written and performed with her husband, Jason Grainger, is DEFINITELY a hit along with the the title track, Stained Glass Window!! This album is undeniably her best!! Way to go Mila!!
Welcome Back Mila.......2003-10-17
I was so pleased to hear the latest offering from Mila. The album contains some of Mila's best work ever and she co-wrote all the songs. She has truly come of age as a writer and continues to dazzle with her sultry and intensely personal vocal performances. She has opened her heart and a window to her life to her fans. Great to have you back Mila!!!!!!!!
TARNISHED WINDOW..............2003-10-05
Having enjoyed Ms. Mason's first two releases, this new release after about 5 years is a big dissapointment.....no tracks have the energy and depth of songs such as DARK HORSE, STRONG ONE, ONE THING LED TO ANOTHER......I have listened to this cd a couple of times through since purchasing it and now it is best used a coaster.....hate to say it=( I hope she does better next time.

Be sure to wear flowers in your hair.......2003-06-05
Scott's real name was Phil Blondheim, but he became Scott McKenzie when he and John Phillips formed a group called The Smoothies. This group only lasted a few months. They disbanded, but Scott and John formed a trio called The Journeymen. They lasted long enough to release three albums and a couple singles before they also disbanded. While John formed the New Journeymen and (later) the Mamas and Papas, Scott went solo, but made no real impact until the Mamas and Papas became successful. At that point, John helped his old friend out. They discussed various ideas and it seems that Scott gave John the basic idea for the song that eventually made Scott famous, although John wrote the song entirely on his own.
Scott is not quite a one-hit wonder, as Like an old time movie (the follow-up to San Francisco) made the top thirty in America and just charted in Britain, but Scott couldn't handle the fame. He recorded an album in 1967 (including the hits, plus a mix of covers and original songs) and another in 1970 (for which Scott wrote all the songs) but neither made much impact.
This compilation begins with one track by the Smoothies and two by the Journeymen. The remainder of the tracks include the best of his solo music, although it must be said that nothing else is anything like San Francisco. The other songs are typical sixties folk music. It makes for interesting listening if (like me) you enjoy sixties folk, but if all you want is San Francisco, buy that song on a various artists compilation.
A Nice Compilation Of McKenzie's Recordings.......2002-07-12
Everyone is quite familiar with singer and songwriter Scott McKenzie based on his single smash hit with the emblematic "San Francisco (Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair). Yet this talented and versatile singer and songwriter is much more than a one-hit wonder, and this collection of his recordings over a decade or so reflect that fact very well. He started his recording career as a member of the Smoothies, and worked his way into the khaki and button-down shirt folk work of the Journeyman, where, along with future Mamas and Papas founder John Phillips, he showed just how talented he was.
Yet it was as a solo performer that he attempted to make his mark, and while he flirted briefly with superstardom based on the overwhelming overnight success of "San Francisco" (written, incidentally, for him by friend John Phillips), McKenzie was turned off by the reaction that his success brought him. Like Don MacLean experienced with the phenomenal success of "American Pie" a decade later, Scott hastily retreated from commercial success, and did some of his best work away from the glare popular venues.
The covers provided on this album on other artist's work shows how versatile he was, and his own songs, such as "What's The Difference?" illustrate how thoughtful, articulate, and forceful a songwriter he could be. Finally, his later work, as in the "Stained Glass Morning album, also included on this CD, proves that Scott McKenzie was a talented, versatile, and gifted artist who deserves to be heard and appreciated on a much larger stage than he ever has been. This CD offers the listener with an opportunity to become more familiar with the range of his work, and I recommend it to anyone interested. Enjoy!
Great to have, but..........2002-06-30
It really is great to have (finally!) a collection of Scott McKenzie available, but it seems odd that the entire FIRST album isn't on it, while the good but not nearly AS good "Stained Glass Morning" is there it its entirety. Too bad someone hadn't put out a "twofer" of those together on one disc.
Some of Mr. McKenzie's best singing was during his early to mid-60's folkie Journeymen days ( w/ Papa John Phillips and Dick Weissman). Now if the three albums that group put out were all issued, we'd have a complete package of this wonderful singer's work! The Collectibles compilation CD of that group is darned good, but the complete albums would certainly sell, I'm sure.
Thank goodness-finally here!.......2002-05-23
I have been a fan of Scott McKenzie since 1967. "San Francisco" was such a worldwide smash no mere mortal could have repeated it. John Phillip's "Like An Old Time Movie" is a great ballad yet "What's The Difference" pts I & II were thoughtful attempts to capture the mind set of many more forward thinking youngsters of the time. (Where did all our high brow ideals go?) I've had both of Scott's albums on LP since they were new and am happy to be able to replace their worn out selves with cd versions of many of my favorite songs. Sadly, "What's The Difference Pt. 2" and "Twelve Thirty" have been left off this compilation. Scott has a very pleasing voice the and this cd is well worth the price.
A great voice, and a great CD!.......2002-04-10
What a great voice! This C.D. is definitely in the "must have" category for all who enjoy music from the 1960's, especially folk!
