3 out of 5 stars best of? maybe. a good start at any rate.......2007-02-20

From the outset I must confess that I don't own this particular compilation. I do however have all the material that is present here within the context of their original albums.

Whilst there's nothing at all wrong with this album, I'd think think hard about buying it. It contains material from the first three albums. The first two albums are still widely available and priced quite moderately. Further, they've got a bunch of classic material that didn't make it onto this comp. I'd actually put some of these other tracks left off this compilation e.g. "What You Get", "Why'd We Come" in front of other material that was included e.g. "Whole Day Off" The third album, 'Good For Your Soul' is currently deleted and so it can be a little harder to come by. I understand that it may be tempting to purchase this album for its two tracks from GFYS. Fine. But please also hassle A&M to re-release GFYS. You deserve access to these other fine songs as well! :D

Perhaps you should check out the samples of the other albums, "Only a Lad" and "Nothing to Fear" that Amazon offer. If you think the material is interesting then it may be worth your while to take the plunge and pay out a few more dollars cos I think you get a better Boingo for yer buck.

All in all, this is an enjoyable compilation of music. However, don't come crying to me when it's a superfluous item in your collection after you've caught Boingo fever and tracked down their backcatalogue. At any rate, the cover art is nice.

5 out of 5 stars Great Service.......2007-01-21

My order was shipped in a timely manner and it was a good price. I appreciate the good service, it made shopping easy and enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the best.......2005-06-11

This particular release is amazing! There is not one bad song throughout the entire cd. It is one of those albums that you can listen to over and over again and never get tired of it....now that's what I call a great record.

For those of you who have never heard of Oingo Boingo, I would say they are a band that makes music that is almost impossible to describe. Their music is truly unique and is completely different from anything you've ever heard. Although there are a lot of bands that have their own sound, Oingo Boingo adds to their sound diversity by including the use of wind instruments. So I'll make an attempt and say Oingo Boingo is punk meets pop meets new wave meets brass meets weird, and that's about as close as I can get. So give them a listen, you won't be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST "BEST OF" OINGO BOINGO..........2004-01-13

Ok, so Oingo Boingo had more than 3 records for one thing for one to pick and choose songs from to make a best of record. I don't think A&M in the end if ever really wanted to put out a collection of fan favorites or get a music expert's opinion of what "the best" of these 3 records had to offer. With each listen it becomes apparant that the studio wanted a collection of songs that blended nicely together and this collection of songs does just that. I mean, each OB album from the early days' had its own appeal. Good For Your Soul had more of a regee feel, Nothing To Fear had more of a punk-pop feel and Only A Lad had more of a ska/new wave feel. So whatever mood you're in, you can find 10 songs that give into that/those desire(s)...but this collection finds a common ground between songs on each of those albums. So...if you're a fan of Oingo Boingo show your support by buying every Oingo Boingo album ever! But if you'd rather have just a solid music collection with no filler, then get this b/c it's a killer collection of songs by a killer band and it even has one of the best album covers ever! Yeah, there's other memorable and stimulating songs by this band, but I'd rather just stick with this record. OTher songs like "Perfect System" and "Running On Treadmill" are kinda lacking in relevance in my opinion. It's as if the band knew they had a cut off of how little they could put on a record so they (or most likely the producers) wrote what they could and chose the ones that had the best chance of "connecting" with the audience. Well, out of the 30 or or songs the producers chose on those albums, these are the the 12 they would have chosen if they would've waited...although that may have not been possible for various complex reasons...but like I said, if you think more is better then go ahead and buy more albums by this band. This collection is perfectly good for newcomers and just as well for those who simply have an astute taste in music.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite the best.......2003-05-30

What's this? A "best of" Oingo Boingo that doesn't include their biggest hit, "Weird Science"? How can that be? Well, it's because it only includes material from the three albums they recorded for A&M Records. While there is nothing particularly bad here, overall the album was a disappointment to me.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Live Albums I Have Ever Heard.......2006-01-07

First let me say that I have just recently discovered Gamma Ray. I am a big fan of power metal from the 80s and have been dismayed at the quality of music being offered these days. However, I stumbled across Helloween and then Gamma Ray and they blew my mind away!

Kai Hanson is a musical genius in my opinion because he writes songs that have good melodies. You tend to remember his songs after a couple of times listening to it. You couple this with excellent and powerful guitar work and your have the makings of a truly great band.

I must say that this live album collection of "B" songs is a great introduction to this band as a previous reviewer stated. Kai Hanson's vocals have gotten better over time and I think his vocal style works better for the type of songs he writes.

Bottom line: I'm happy as a clam. I have some power metal I can listen to. It's a shame that there aren't any really good power metal bands in the U.S. (at least that are known), but maybe that is because it is more popular in Europe now than here in the U.S. Whatever the case, all power metal fans should have this album in their collection.

4 out of 5 stars Great Live Album!!!!!!.......2005-01-11

I saw Gamma Ray in Mexico City in 2003 and there was a great show, Kai Hansen's voice it's great and all the band sounds good. This double live album it's excellent, but many songs are missing, for example "Abyss of the void", "Fire below","Send me a sign", "Somewhere out in space", to name a few. Dan's drums in the album sounds fantastic, his solo it's so intense and all the songs are great. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best power metal groups out there.......2004-05-22

What's good about it?

Whether it's the nine-minute epic "Armageddon" with its lightning quick dual guitar attack, the Queen-like power ballad "The Silence," or the power metal blues riffing on "New World Order," one thing is clear about Gamma Ray, they always present consistent and enjoyable heavy metal music. Sure they have some strange topic to sing about, mostly sci-fi stuff, but that's the genre. Only in power metal could you get away with the title "Heart of the Unicorn." Frontman Kai Hansen's vocals are so gritty and the music is so frantic, you can forgive him for the subject matter. Gamma Ray packs all their songs with plenty of chugga-chugga riffing on the low E string, melodic vocals, powerful choruses, movie epic harmonies, rapid guitar solos, and double kick drums. You'd think that this formula would get kind of old after a while, but each song is unique and never boring. "Rich and Famous" was a b-side from one of their earlier albums. The high-pitched opening riff is sure to stick with you. Gamma Ray rallies the crowd with "Heavy Metal Universe." You can hear the crowd feed off the group's energy as they sing along. Be sure to listen to the fluid solo work "Razor Blade Sigh" and "Rising Star/Shine On." Also included in the double-CD set are video clips for two of the songs performed live.

Anything bad?

This album was released a year and a half ago overseas. Please save the drum solos for the show, keep them off the CD. I'm sure the fans didn't vote for it.

Bottom Line

When you let your fans pick the set list, you know it's going to be made up of songs not normally played live or heard on the radio. This is always a treat for the fans. If you're not a fan, don't let this discourage you. Skeletons In the Closet is a great collection of songs by one of the best power metal groups out there. What else can you say about a group who's rare and B material is just as great as their A material?

4 out of 5 stars An excellent collection, but not all that necessary anymore.......2005-01-18

When this rarities collection was released in 1996, it was a perfect edition to any Venom fans collection as it contained previosly unreleased songs, demons, and remixes. However most of the material present on this release has been re-released as bonus tracks on the remastered editions of Welcome to Hell, Black Metal, At War With Satan, and Possessed and even the compilation In League with Satan. There are still a few songs however that were not re-released that still makes this package a must for the die hard fan. The two songs that are still only available on this release are Dead on Arrival and Sadist (Mistress of the Whip). Another song that is only available on this release is At War with Satan (Full Re-Edited Version). I really dug this version as it took the breathtakingly creepy speech that was found towards the end of the song and put it at the front of the song instead, much like the At War with Satan preview track on Black Metal. If your a die hard and must have these three tracks, also check out the Venom tribute album as it also has a rare Venom track called Holy Man.

i came across this cassette in a record brand new can you believe that since this has been out of print since the late 80s my favorite is hey good lookin and i remember fries with that shake back in 1986 was there a video for hey good lookin

4 out of 5 stars Funk to the max!.......2005-10-18

I really liked this funk filled CD with the P-Funk mob giving up the P."Hey Good Looking" has funk, bass,Bootsy Collins and a beautiful vocalist singer named Vanessa Williams on ths track.Great songs include "Do Fries Go With That Shake" and "R & B Skeletons in the Closet".What I really like about this CD is the artwork cover & comics by Pedro Bell and the commentary by George Clinton about the state of pop & black music which is very funny and sad in the late 80's.If you don't have this CD, add it to your P-Funk collection...you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Steve Washington FUNKS IT UP!.......2005-08-05

The best songs on this album Hey Good Looking and Do Fries Go With That Shake were written and performed by Steve Washington from Slave. What a combination of P-Funk and Slave on one record! Wow!

      5 out of 5 stars A foolish masterpiece!.......2005-05-17

This is one of the most delightfully stupid recordings of all time. Funky and foolish! George Clinton (fool master George, as I call him) goes wild in a satire of the VERY sad state of R&B in the 80s, the days when synthesizer bangers stole the soul. Lots of Pedro Bell's cartoon madness on the cover.

But the songs are even wilder than before (and for Clinton and co., that is saying a lot!). "Hey Good Lookin'" retunred Vanessa Williams to prominence with her vocals on this one. "Do Fries Go With That Shake" ROCKED the summer of 1986, adding a much needed shot in the arm to Soul radio stations of the time. But my favorite here is the incredibly (intentionally)ridiculous "Mixmaster Suite." My friends and I at the University of South Carolina would HOWL at this one! Clinton truly let the jackasses out of the gate to hee haw in the recording studio and unlike much of the mechanical mess that passed for R&B at the time (which the tune satirizes), this is (intentionally) so bad that you will pound the floor in laughter at this one! Ya gotta love it! Get it and you'll see what I mean!
