Customer Reviews:
An exceptional British Violinist !.......2007-03-09
This is my first CD by the British viloinist Vanessa-Mae and I found it to be outstanding. All three pieces were exceptional and I never tire of hearing them again. For the third track if you close your eyes you're at the 1997 Hong Kong celebration of it's return to China.
As I listened to the Violin Fantasy I was thinking of Arikawa Shizuka's 2006 Olympic gold medal winning figure skating performance - especially her Ina Bauer movements. I have heard various pieces from Happy Valley in other settings but the combination of them all was outstanding. I have heard segments of Butterfly Lovers but this is the first time I've heard it in it's entirety and magnificent it is.
I would also call people's attention to the written forward of the liner. It tells you a great deal about the determination and perseverance of Vanessa-Mae in the face of hostility if not down right racism. To face this as a young child starting out on her career could have been crushing and a tremendous loss to Great Britain and the music world as a whole. The person she encountered at the age of 12 seems typical of the British residing near a park in Shanghai that was supposedly marked no dogs or Chinese allowed. I am glad that she did not allow this encounter to deter her from realizing her dreams and bringing her outstanding performance to us.
I took this CD to work and play it on my computer as background music in my office. It is soothing and relaxing and I look forward to hearing it each day. I'll have to get another copy of the CD so I can play it at home on the days I'm not in the office.
This was a great introduction for me and I hope others will enjoy it as much as I do. It is going to be a popular holiday gift this year to friends and family who are classical music enthusiasts.
From Child Prodigy to Beautiful Swan .......2006-07-01
Simply put, Vanessa Mae is one great talent. She does not receive the attention she deserves because her music falls into the classical genre. Nonetheless, as an Ozzy, Queen, Zep, Doors, and Stones fan, I have to say that this young lady rocks solidly on the electric violin. Give her a listen now!
"Butterfly Lovers" not good as expected.......2005-05-07
I have heard of four versions of "Butterfly Lovers" violin concerto by Li-Na Yu with Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Takako Nishizaki With New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Siqing Lu and at last this title performed by Vanessa-Mae. To my disappointment, Vanessa-Mae's performance is neither loyal to original folklore nor deeply constructed. Li-Na Yu's recording still deserves the authoritive status. Takako Nishizaki probably can take second place.
However, other works in this albums are better.
Classically simple and intimate.......2004-06-19
As you've read from the other reviews, there are only three compositions on this album. The quality, spiritedness, and passion in each of these pieces leaves the listener wanting more.
I loved the initial novelty of Vanessa-Mae when she first came out; she provided a sultriness and edge to The Violin Player through her own compositions and renditions of traditional classics. Sometimes, that novelty can wear off... for example, with Bond.
What I love about this album, and her previous Classical Album Part 1, is that Vanessa-Mae gets back to the basics and really shows us that she is indeed a classically trained artist at heart. She is able to take these traditional pieces and (to borrow a phrase from American Idol) truly make them her own. She is not just some manufactured phenomenon.
The inlay of the CD is are essays from Vanessa-Mae that explain to the reader her intent for doing this album: to get in touch or pay hommage to her self-admittedly neglected Chinese roots. The sincerity in the writing is very refreshing and honest.
I love all of the 3 pieces: Butterfly Lovers, Turandot, and Happy Valley. Each are different styles which VM pulls off extremely well. Both Butterfly Lovers and Turandot sing with emotion and intensity. Happy Valley builds an image of joy and excitedness that surrounded the HK-China Reunification. In each song, you are truly able to sense and feel VM's passion and emotion that just sings from her violin. I have heard a different version of Butterfly Lovers, and this one is definitely better. It has VM's unique touch to it.
Truly a worthwhile purchase, and finest album from VM to date. I give it 4-stars because I wish she included more content!
Listen to the harmony of the violin and Chinese exotic music.......2002-05-24
This CD consists of three Chinese related works.Vanessa Mae, a young Chinese violinist did a great job on the CD.
1.Butterfly Lovers is based on Chinese folklore. This work has unique and exotic melody which recall China. Vanessa Mae plays delicately and sweetly and expresses the feeling of young couple of this story very well.
2.Violine fantasy on Puccini's Turandot is based of Puccini's Original Trandot and composed for violin. This work is well condensed of famous parts of Opera version. Vanessa Mae plays not only artistically, like other classical music, but also exotically, like chinese music. "Turandot as a violin music" is also interesting.
3.Happy Valley is the composition for re-unified hong Kong with China. This music is played by orchestra, violin and chorus. Compared with other two, this one places a emphasis on joyful aspects rather than artistic aspects. We can imagine the situation that not only musicians, but also listeners enjoy this music and celebrate the re-unification.
As a whole, the works of this CD give a impressive for the Chinese unique and exotic melody. Vanessa Mae plays the merody, expressing Chineseness and artistic aspects. Needless to say, this is one of the best her works. You must listen to it.

Customer Reviews:
a spectacular achievement.......2007-05-14
read the linear notes and you think of mingus' black saint and the sinner lady, there's a story here, and maybe you want to fit the story to the music, and if that works, fine. but if you're like me and the story doesn't fit the music, then toss out the story and listen to the music, instead of forcing a fit.
there's one section that sounds like herbie hancock's watermelon man. it cooks. but that's not where the music is going either. that's just part of it.
g.u.t. was composed by stefon harris, and therein lies the genuis. brilliant orchestration. rather than worrying about grand theories and how they work, or mingus' black saint as a blueprint, or whether or not this is a jazz suite, tone poem, or one man's contribution to orchestral music, let the music play and take in the experience.
Masterpiece.......2007-02-22
Stefon Harris pulls off a stunning record for Blue Note Records here with his musical epic "The Grand Unification Theory", a theme-based album observing the cycle of life (both physical and metaphysical). This music is easily accessible on every track, and would have to be viewed as an interaction between freedom and structure. Every selection on this album will one day be viewed as a classic.
Personnel: Stefon Harris (vibraphone, marimba, percussion and voice), Xavier Davis (piano), Tarus Mateen (bass and vocals), Terreon Gully (drums), Kahlil Kwame Bell (African percussion, concert bass drum), Anne Drummond (flute and alto flute), Douglas Purviance (bass trombone), Steve Turre (trombone and shells), Derrick Gardner (trumpet and flugelhorn), Tim Warfield (tenor sax), Mark Vinci (clarinet) and Myles Weinstein (tympani).
A concept album that works!.......2003-03-03
Stefon Harris is far from being the first jazz artist to attempt a concept album. Wayne Shorter's _The All-Seeing Eye_ (which this album resembles musically), Grachan Moncur's _Evolution_, and, perhaps most distinguished of all Charles Mingus' _Pithecanthropus Erectus_ all put forth complex musical visions suggesting humanity's evolution, with varying degrees of success. While it might seem arrogant and overly ambitious for Stefon Harris to attempt such a vision on his third album as sole leader, he pulls it off. Each subsequent listening makes this clearer. It's also an *accessible* grand concept album, with some funky, danceable tunes alternating with the moodier, more cerebral compositions. This album proves that Stefon Harris is among the best younger musicians, regardless of genre, and perhaps among the best, period.
Quite astounding and very listenable--a rare combination.......2003-02-14
If you're a young, up-and-coming jazz vibes player and composer and you name your latest cd Grand Unification Theory, you're probably asking for trouble. But you know what? I don't think Stefon Harris cares. Yeah, it's brash, yeah, it's over the top, but if you've got the concept, the chops, and the chutzpah to back it up, maybe--just maybe--you can pull it off.
Actually, let's forget about the grandiosity for a moment and just concentrate on the music. Harris is certainly the most accomplished vibes player of his generation--check out his solos on "The Velvet Couch" and "March of the Angels," for example--and he's no slouch as a composer either. Plus he lays down some tasty marimba as well. But where he really excels is in choosing band mates and arranging. Utilizing 12 musicians--many not very well known (Terreon Gully on drums, a name new to me, especially shines)--in various combinations, Harris always seems to find the ideal creative context for each and all to strut their stuff. In a work this ambitious, it's a given that there will be unwieldy passages, but, amazingly, these are kept to a minimum. And even if there's a bit of repetition, things never seem to bog down. What I especially like about this disc is the stunning variety of sonic soundscapes Harris achieves, all within recognizable (if sometimes rather radically tweaked) song forms.
With jazz in the hands of such prodigiously talented young practitioners as Stefon Harris, Jason Moran, Jacky Terrasson, Peter Epstein, Gregory Hutchinson, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Ben Allison, Michael Blake, Ben Monder, Guillermo Klein, and others, it has a very bright future. And with this fine disc, Stefon Harris vaults to very near the head of the class.

Customer Reviews:
Go Go POWER RANGERS!.......2004-04-15
This whole album sounds like a (fictional) soundtrack to what a Power Rangers movie would sound like. At least the old Power Rangers theme. Its their best album though, Deadly Sleep and Forevermore are the best Kai Hansen songs in years.
How good can it get ?.......2002-09-03
This album is absolutely one of the best in its genre ,
no flaws or glitches , just straight ahead melodic metal
with guitar playing extraordinaire ( Kai Hansen from
Helloween .....) and singing by one of Germanys most
skilled and mature metal vocalists today ( which especially
will please those of you who get a headache from the
countless numbers of overpitched castrate singers in
power metal ).
Songwriting is top and the singalong potential is doubtless
comparative to Helloweens better albums , only Iron Saviour is
much more melodic and refined - really , really great !!!

Melodic Power Metal blasting the Hall of Fame.................2002-06-28
oh - how do they do it ?
With Kai Hansen ( Helloween/Gamma Ray ) and Piet
Sielck behind the controls the expectations are
as high as ever ; but don't You think these guys still
manage to surprise with flying colours ?
Totally awesome. This is straight-ahead melodic power metal
that goes right to business without any fuzz or progressive
elements ; just catchy riffs and killer choruses en masse - and
boy do they do it well.....
All tracks are great ; and I don't agree that Hansens 98' version
of " Gorgar " ist that bad. But best tracks are the first
five. This is a CD that puts fast melodic metal right back at the pedestal that so many failed to reach....
My only ( this will upset people ) remark would be ; why don't
they let Hansen sing more ; I think he is every bit as good as
Sielck ( which by the way is a outstanding songwriter ).
Those who praise the good old days of NWOBHM back
in the eighties should lend Unification their attention and
realize that this that kind of music taken to it's absolute
optimus and adjusted to the speed and compact melodies that
signify modern european/german power metal....
Great !
POWER METAL WITH INDIVIDUALITY.......2001-08-10
GREAT POWER METAL. PAY ATTENTION AND FEEL THE UNIQUENESS. THESE ARE NOT GAMMAY RAY, BLIND GUARDIAN, GRAVEDIGGER LEFTOVERS. THIS IS A LANDMARK ALBUM WITH ALL AROUND GREAT MUSICIANSHIP, LYRICS AND STORY LINE.

This is a GREAT cd for ALL TREKKIES........2002-03-17
I love this CD because when I need a dose of Star Trek I can have it. This is nice going to sleep music after a long day. Try it out. You won't be sorry when you get It. Take it from me a VERY TRUE STAR TREK FAN. God Bless.
"Yesterday's Enterprise...Klingons/Skin Of Teeth...McCarthy".......2001-12-24
Let me say this...composer Dennis McCarthy sends waves of understated themes, of which are flowing, building and simply fascinating---the album at hand from GNP/Crescendo(Neil Norman's label), features the series familiar music---main title by Alexander Courage and Jerry Goldsmith, but when Dennis McCarthy comes on the scene, some interesting and wonderful things happen...trust me you're going to be in for the ride of your life.
Three scores from the Original Television Series are featured---"YESTERDAY'S ENTERPRISE", is the first one---"KLINGONS/SKIN OF TEETH", with the orchestra building and climbing to an overpowering and ultimate climax, gotta love it---next we have "UNIFICATION I & II", second score, hauntingly beautiful is "SAREK DRIFTS AWAY", strings blending with brass, interwoven themes as you drift off into infinity---"HOLLOW PURSUITS", third and final score, a lighter touch mixed with a playful texture, take for instance "LADY GATES/SWORDPLAY", spells adventures and excitement from the get-go, memories of those thrilling days of old "swashbucklers", must admit...a nice touch by McCarthy.
In closing, highly recommend this as a "film-score-buffs" dream---has all the ingredients you look for in a score, and then some---well done GNP/Crescendo, this third voyage with "THE NEXT GENERATION", was a real gas!
You might try other Star Trek (GNP/Crescendo) releases ~ "Star Trek:First Contact"(GNPD-8052)..."Star Trek:Encounters"(GNPD-1701)..."Star Trek:Voyager"(GNPD-1405)...all worthy of a good listen for the classic "film-score-buff" in all of us!
Total Time: 46:14 on 18 Tracks ~ GNP/Crescendo GNPD-8031 ~ (1992)
A Must-Have for TNG Fans.......1999-07-27
This CD is well worth the price for the "Sarek Fades Away" track alone. Haunting and beautifully performed, this music captivates the listener and evokes feeling in anyone who hears it.
An Enjoyable Collection of Music.......1998-09-27
Although I enjoyed Voyager's Caretaker more than this CD, it is still worth the price. You can listen to music (which is composed by Dennis McCarthy) from Yesterday's Enterprise, Hollow Pursuits, and Unification. I trememdously enjoyed the suites from Yesterday's Enterprise and Hollow Pursuits. However, the music from Unification wasn't as enjoyable as the others, but that's only my opinion. My review : You'll love this if you are a TNG or Dennis McCarthy fan, but Voyager fans should get the Caretaker CD.

This set debuts the fifth incarnation of the Grammy-winning group, assembled by reggae's indefatigable phoenix Duckie Simpson, Uhuru's founder and staunchly militant presence. Since Uhuru's second version--which featured Michael Rose's leads, the late Puma Jones and Simpson's harmonies, and Sly and Robbie's chugging rhythms--derailed from the fast lane to international rock & roll stardom, a lot of water has passed under the bridge. Immediately upon winning back the rights to the Uhuru name from fourth lineup members Don Carlos and Garth Dennis, Simpson recruited new members Jennifer "Jenifah Nyah" Connally (a Jones look-alike) and lead vocalist O'Neill "Andrew Bees" Beckford. Though no breakthrough boomshots on the order of "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" leap off the figurative turntable here, the many Uhuru fans of this world will be more than happy. Thanks to Duckie and a host of Jamaica's finest studio talents, that winning reggae-rock formula--blissfully aggressive lead tenor framed by intermingled soprano and bass harmonies--returns, in full effect. --Elena Oumano

A remarkable celebration of the drum.......1999-03-03
Grand Unification is a must for anyone who wants to explore the possibilities of the drum. I first heard Milford Graves a few decades ago at a tribute to the late poet Sterling A. Brown, when Graves opened the event witha mesmurizing 15 minute solo performance. Graves, a master percussionist, is rarely heard (except perhaps by those lucky students at Bennington College where he teaches), and those of us who've followed his career over the decades have savored his appearances as a leader and/or collaborator on just a handfull of available recordings. What is especially compelling about this release is Graves' capacity to skillfully blend the rhythms of the world within single passages of the eight compositions represented here. There is always a point when the listener becomes absorbed in his work that one forgets that there is only one drummer at work. Listeners who think that drums belong in the background, or that all has been said in world beat or planet drumming haven't begun to imagine the possibilities of percussion discussions until they grab a copy of this one.
Milford Graves is one of the Greatest Musical Forces Alive.......1998-12-02
I saw Milford Graves perform a totally free set with John Zorn last June at the Texaco Jazz Fest in NY. It was my first taste of Milford and I was Blown away by the energy the musicality that Graves expressed. Zorn was okay, but Milford was the one really running the show. I completely lost all sense of what was going on around me. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. This CD doesn't truly capture the wonder of seeing him live, but it's a nice taste of his genius and I love it. It's very difficult to find material with Milford. Although it's out there, not a lot of stores carry stuff with him on it. This CD is a step in the right direction.
Good Medicine.......1998-09-02
Milford Graves is a true renaisance man. When the "avant-garde" in jazz had assembled itself in the 60's, Milford Graves was one of the first drummers to take that bold step to liberate his instrument from the role of a metric "time-keeper." Unfortunately the extent to which he has contributed and advanced the vocabulary of his instrument can only be matched by the degree to which he remains somewhat of an unknown to the populace at large. In the 60's Graves recorded with Paul Bley, Giuseppi Logan, Lowell Davidson, as a member of the New York Art Quartet and with Albert Ayler. Since then he has been documented seldomly on record. There has been in recent years a multi-percussional recording with Andrew Cyrille, Kenny Clarke and Fomoudo Don Moye ("Pieces of Time" - Soul Note) and a duo album with Saxophonist David Murray ("Real Deal" - DIW) He can not be found performing regularly short of a gig with William Parker and Charles Gayle either in the basement of his home before an audience of students, friends and family or at the annual Vision for the 21st Century Festival in New York. So it goes without saying that this album is indeed a rare treat. This solo recording is about a great deal more than just drumming. Graves is a multifaceted human being who's skills exhaust, though not limited to, the percussionist's arsenal; but also the revered fields of accupuncture, herbalism, homeopathic medicine and martial arts. All of these aspects are components not only to Grave's approach to his instrument, but how he physically deploys his instrument to the task at hand. The music sounds less like a studio session and more like a documentary of a very personal incantation. The listener shouldn't feel compelled to "understand" the material or assimilate it to the confines of a more accessable logic. His prowess is staggering. His sense of time is omnipotent and yet cannot be decoded. This is the work of a master. We're not expected to "get it." We can only marvel at the ability demonstrated. One simply partakes of this work by witnessing and we do this when we listen. I found it to be a most worth-while experience.

Customer Reviews:
It is big, but it's not entirely clever........2006-05-01
Following on from their tentatively, but ultimately well-received EP, Fightstar finally give us a full scale look at what they're all about: namely big, meaty chords; big, meaty vocals (from Simpson at least); big meaty production and, frankly, lackluster lyrics.
The band's talents are shown to their fullest on 'Grand Unification Pt 1', 'Paint Your Target' and 'Mono', though the ending of the latter demonstrates the over-eagerness of producer Colin Richardson to tack that little extra something to the some of the tracks and detract from their quality.
'Sleep Well Tonight' and 'Build an Army' on the other hand are both potentially good tracks spoiled by a feeble and unimaginative verse. Both have their moments, but the songs as a whole are very weak.
Then there are the lyrics:
"I'm alone and self-anaemic
But sometimes you wake up
If I could hold this rope inside my hands
You'd understand they let us down"
(Waste a Moment)
What...?
The whole album is full of verses put together for the sake of the rhyme and practically every track is about someone sleeping/waking too much/little. After Palahniuk's Laughter, we shouldn't be surprised, but the lyrics often jarr.
However, like Palahniuk's Laughter, this album is about the sound as a whole. Charlie Simpson's voice is perfectly suited to the music (perhaps why he sounded so rubbish when trying to sing pop songs). He regularly (and thankfully) drowns out singing partner Al Westaway and produces a sound you wouldn't expect from someone of his tender years. And there's little restraint to the playing; the band merrily going all out to fill each track with as much noise as possible, without it all becoming a tiresome drone, so expect to be banging your head a lot.
Grand Unification is a good, but not great, debut album and Fightstar need to garner some experience - as well as some more focused production and legible lyrics - if they're to have any hope of releasing a superior follow-up.
Pure Brilliance, Not A Second Wasted.......2006-04-01
ok i first heard fightstar awhile ago and have been very interested in the direction of this band. A major factor which i think was effective towards people is the lead singer Charlie, yes he was in a pop band, amazingly storming into the post hardcore seen and WOOOOOOOW!!!! pulling it off pretty damn good. I think he deserves massive credit and surely anyone knocking this band because of his presence should seriously back off. Now Fightstar, well like i said i've been keen to see what there music was going to sound like and have found a sound in their uniqueness, each and every song on Grand Unification is perfect, even the opening 1+ intro which draws in a sound of beauty and attention, the amazing cross over from to sleep into Grand unifacation is brilliant and the rest of the album follows on a high path of excellence. Dan Haigh plays some awesome bass quality is tight and timing is soooo good!
Ok break down of some tracks,
10. Mono- great sound here, amazing build up and final deliverance is outstanding, emotion is high here and the track blends so good.
3. Waste A Moment- awesome vocal work, bass is nice and powerful, one of fav's on album
5. Paint Your Target- the melody at the beggining plays great into the hard scream from charlie, again amazing bass, just pure genius
7. Last Conversation- another great melody played along to some more quality bass, one of the strongest chorous, heavy guitars
4. Sleep Well Tonight- a very strong and heavy track, Charlie gives it all here, sings his balls off, good emotion charged track
8. Lost Like Tears In The Rain- a great melody track, crossing from crunching hard riffs into soft and beautiful melody, drumming is solid and well paced
I could write a hell of alot more, but id rather you listened to it yourself, i am hugely fond of this album and from start to finish it blows out strong emotion, great lyrical and inspiraing musical talent, Fightstar the name i am so looking forward to seeing live, i also love the artwork in the booklet and cd cover and back. Best move ever for a band memeber of charlies background his talent shines through here proudly, Grand Unification rocks in so many ways, a solid album throughout, Fightstar reign supreme in my cd player now
FIGHTSTAR,FIGHTSTAR,FIGHTSTAR!!!! i wanna hear this chant at a live performance and i think the entire crowd will agree.
ps- i wrote this review late so excuse my spelling errors.
amazing.......2006-03-24
I really cant believe the lead singer of this band (charile simpson) use to be with teeth grinding kiddie pop band busted, but this album will blow all recollection of them away, its really amazing.the single "waste a moment" is great.if you want to listen to samples go to www.amazon.co.uk & check them out,if you like sinch, chevelle, trapt and three days grace you'll love these guys...
Excellent LP debut from a band is gonna surprise.......2006-03-18
It's not my kinda music, so I have put 4 stars but I could have given 5. This album have surprised me positively.
5-Paint Your Target: Single debut de Fightstar.
Lead vocals: Charlie. Backup vocals: Alex.
me parecen interesantes.
En el estribillo Charlie canta: "I don't" y Alex responde: "need you".
Una balada as? m?s o menos Emo.
