Album Description

One of today's most acclaimed keyboard virtuosi, Marc-André Hamelin is renowned for his completely mastery of the piano and phenomenal technique as well as for his partiality for unfamiliar repertoire. In this program, two familiar Romantic works in the same key are intersected by two less well-known keyboard masterpieces: Schulz-Evler's variations on "The Blue Danube Waltz" (played here complete for the very first time!), and the shatteringly percussive "Rudepoêma" of Brazil's greatest composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2007-03-19

Despite being a Hamelin admirer for some years, I didn't even know this disc existed until very recently. It really is fabulous. In my view, every piece on the disc would gain considerable support for the accolade of best ever recording of that piece. It is that good.

5 out of 5 stars (No title)........2000-12-02

For too long, this was the only real source of Hamelin playing standard composition(s) -- at least in comparison to the rest of his repertoire! And what performances he delivers! It is very easy, when listening to the Rachmaninov to compare it to Horowitz or Browning, and when listening to the Chopin, to Rachmaninov and Kapell, and to the Blue Danube (which he plays complete), though lacking some of what is in Lhevinne's, you'll hear a collosal performance you probably won't hear matched for many years to come. A thoroughly excellent disc, almost entirely definitive!

5 out of 5 stars re-release of 1993 CD.......1999-12-10

I have this CD as Isba Classic (Koch International)ISB-CD-5016 from 1993 so it should be available elsewhere.

It is good to hear Hamelin playing some more familiar works. Another good source of Hamelin recordings is the Danacord series 'Rarities of Piano Music at "Schloss vor Husum"' which has Hamelin on every second release.

I recently discovered that the manufacturer hasn't sent out this product to its distributors, even though it is officially released. I just thought I would let you know. This was written Sunday Oct. 31 so remember that!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection, Even Better Price.......2005-10-14

I picked this CD up as an afterthought while searching for some background music for a play I was putting together, and while it cost less than half of the other swashbuckler soundtrack CDs, it has more tracks than most, more variety than any(dramatic to romantic to action), and solid sound quality. If you're after a whole collection of the Korngold era tunes in one CD, this is it.

4 out of 5 stars An Oldie Re-Issue, But Still A Goodie!.......2005-04-03

A re-issue of tracks from Marco Polo 8.223607, 1995. Practically perfect in every way. But the brass could be a bit more crisp and defined. Primarily an early work from master restoration magicians Messrs. John Morgan and William Stromberg. And now at "popular prices." Don't delay on this one!

5 out of 5 stars Watch Out! This Music Will Raise Your Cholesterol!.......2005-03-16

And it will buckle your swash, too.

These performances appeared in 1995 on Naxos's full-price sister label, Marco Polo, and are among a spate of movie music scores making their appearances now at budget price. Some are wonderful - like Honegger's score for 'Les Misérables,' Georges Auric's 'Beauty and the Beast,' and Wojciech Kilar's 'Dracula.' Some don't stand up too well on their own, like Steiner's 'King Kong' or Waxman's 'Objective: Burma!'. But this one definitely has the best of the best, all in that late-romantic, richly scored music we associate with the genre. The producers have put together some of the best cues from four swashbucklers and from beginning to end this is music to enjoy, with no dead wood anywhere along the way.

The Main Title of Miklós Rosza's 'The King's Thief' is a heckuva lot better than the 1955 Edmund Purdom movie for which it was written. Victor Young's 'Scaramouche' is represented by nine cues, among them the delightful 'Main Title' and the faux-baroque 'Pavane.' The inventor of this sort of movie music, Erich Maria Korngold, is here represented by six cues from the 1935 Errol Flynn blockbuster, 'Captain Blood.' All five cues are terrific and sweep you along, but I particularly like 'Slaves--Arabella and Blood,' a seven-minute tone poem of great beauty and ingenuity. Max Steiner, a transplanted Viennese like Korngold, contributes six cues from 'The Three Musketeers,' also from 1935. The love theme is really gorgeous.

These scores were reconstructed by the late Christopher Palmer ('The King's Thief'), William Stromberg ('Scaramouche') and John Morgan ('Captain Blood' and 'The Three Musketeers') from conductor's piano scores; the full scores, like many of their era, were lost. In one case the score had only a violin line. The three arrangers attempted, then, to reproduce the orchestrations from the movie sound track itself, a difficult task at best, but it sounds to me like they did a marvelous job collectively. These orchestrations have the sweep and grandeur of the originals.

The Brandenburg Philharmonic Orchestra (Potsdam, Germany) is conducted by Richard Kaufman. They are beautifully played and recorded.

This one is worth having if you love the flamboyant style favored in adventure films; this is the crème de la crème.

      Album Description

The second album from the band who injected new life into the post-rock scene with their breathtaking debut Flares in 2005. For those unfamiliar with their debut, port-royal are anything but just another generic epic instrumental outfit; utilising subtle electronics and almost classical arrangements, they create lengthy, expansive, melancholic compositions that often have movements within the individual tracks, constantly evolving and shifting in tempo. Though Afraid To Dance follows the formula that made Flares such a success, it also displays sufficient progression to be more than just Flares pt2; though the same components are evident, the emphasis has shifted towards the electronic beats and pure rhythm that underpin their sound, bringing them to the forefront while the hypnotic spacerock guitars and synth gently weave melodies beneath. Full press push on what could be the biggest album on the label to date; journalists have been asking for promo copies ever since the release was listed on the Resonant website, so expect a wave of support. First UK tour dates to follow in the summer, with European dates being finalised now.

5 out of 5 stars Lush and lovely music from the past.......2000-01-20

Perhaps some day Dorian Recordings will turn out a poor CD, but among their more recent releases are four sets that feature harpist Carol Thompson. The artist was born in this country of Anglo-Welsh-Irish background (as the copywriter tells us). Part of her technique is to let her ornamentation come out of the melody rather than merely appending it, and to execute her chords with a "downward roll" rather than an upward as in classical harp playing.

So with Amazon.com's permission, I will submit this same write up to each of the four webpages that deal with these albums.

. (DOR-90013) has Ms. Thompson accompanied by another harpist and a wooden flute; and the extra coloration is welcome. Here we have 18 cuts (64 minutes) of Celtic harp music, the more familiar of which are "Brian Boru's March" and "Gentle Annie." The notes are of a general nature.

The subtitle of (DOR-90120) shows the program (53 minutes) to be much like the other sets, including the familiar "All Through the Night" and "The Ash Grove." I spot even one or two selections among the 19 here that appeared on earlier recordings. But it is all so winningly played that one must not carp. The notes are in several languages and a bit shorter than usual to keep the booklet from being too thick.

(DOR-90176) has 71 minutes consisting of 21 cuts such as "She Moves Through the Fair" and "Snow on the Hills." This set tends to be more satisfactory than the last one because of the presence of accordion, concertina, wooden flute and second harp; although by now one tune is starting to blur into the other.

The fourth Dorian set in order of recording is (DOR-90240) in which our harpist goes it alone with a short program (51 minutes) of 12 cuts, half of which are medleys. Included are "Twisting of the Rope," "Blind Mary" and the title song. This time the notes give information about each song.

Again I must emphasize the excellence of the playing and how beautiful each CD is by itself. But as with so many artists that concentrate on a small part of the music spectrum, each new offering tends to be predictable and one gets a strong feeling of déjà vu. But to be fair, these sets were released with considerable time between them and only people like reviewers now and then get to hear them all at once.

So which to choose? I would go for the two where you get more than the sound of a single harp first. But I really think that enthusiasts of British music will want to have all of these sets sooner or later.

And keep an eye open for the fifth entry in this series: (DOR-90273) that is not yet available at the time of this writing.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing to your soul.......1999-03-11

I remember first hearing a cut from this on our Public Radio Station out of Tampa, Florida. I was driving home in a thunderous rainstorm, beaten by rush hour traffic and sweltering in the heat. I didn't know what the music was, but it had the most beautiful, lilting sound and I felt quieted down to my soul's fiber. I rushed in and called the Station the moment I reached home. It's a beautiful CD, beautiful music and a joy to listen to at any time.

I purchased this album because a Wire Tapper compilation presented me with 'Flares' pt 3 or so, the ONLY stand out track on the whole album. I was expecting some complex sequencing, a little glitch core with drawn out guitars, with perhaps a somber or delicate mood. What I got was one original song surrounded by very poor reduxes of Explosions in the Sky, who also sound like poor reduxes of other bands, who sound like other bands etc. Sorry, but the melodies on this album are already outdated, as much as I appreciate the production value here [it does SOUND great], this album bored me with its seeming complexity once it was revealed to be startlingly simplistic.

Albums like this are the reason that I listen to music.

5 out of 5 stars A devoted Fan of Mimi's.......2000-09-28

I have heard Mimi in person (a real treat) many times at the Sedalia, MO Joplin Festival and already own many of her recordings including this one which is even better than her others. I can't say too much in praise of her talent, her creativity and her absolute skill and ability to throughly entertain with anything or any type of music she plays. She is fantastically clever at sneaking in bits of "classical" themes right in the middle of something Ragtime. She has a wonderful sense of humor and a caring personality that will let her make time to answer kids' questions about how she can "remember so many notes to play". I can't imagine ANYONE who would not THOROUGHLY ENJOY this recording.
