For fans of the heavier side of Journey.......2006-06-27

I'm sure Neal Schon and Jan Hammer would be annoyed that I use the J-word so much in this review, but let's face it: Most people who hear about and buy this disc will be Journey fans. However, it's not exclusively for them. In fact, if you're a fan of the "Faithfully", "Open Arms" Journey you may be disappointed. But for those who dig "Chain Reaction", "Escape", and "Rubicon", this will tide you over nicely.
I first heard (saw) the track "No More Lies" on MTV back in the summer of '83, and was impressed not only with such a hard-charging riff, but also Neal's very capable lead vocal. Sure, his voice is better suited for backing vocals, but on all the songs that he sings on this compilation, he more than fits the bill. I have to wonder how many of these songs he brought to Journey only to be rejected by Mr. Perry. This disc is chock full of classic Schon riffs, such as "Wasting Time", "I'm Down", "I'm Talking to You", "Turnaround", "Self Defense" and the aforementioned "No More Lies".
But although it's mostly Neal's album, you can't discount Jan Hammer's contribution. His synthesizers may sound dated (not that it matters to me), but they are never out of place or gregarious. Check out his flourishes on "Arc", "On the Beach", or "Time Again". Hammer does most (if not all) of the drumming too, and his playing is very instinctual, and never too polished.
But then towards the end, emerging from all this hard guitar wankery, comes the beautiful "Peace of Mind". Here, Neal plays a few delicate chords over and over (not long enough in fact) while Jan plays harmonica-sounding synth lines on top. It's the aural equivalent of watching a sunset in the middle of an open field.
I give this album 4 stars (I would give it 4.5 if I could) because the "perfect" 5-star album is something that is handed out too easily on Amazon, and this does have a couple of "duds" ("So Hot" and "Hooked on Love"). But 17 out of 19 excellent tracks is more than a bargain. So for Journey fans who want a little "edge" and for folks who want that 80's AOR sound but are sick of what they hear on "classic rock" radio, buy this before the summer ends and crank it up.

That reason being that this is early 80's radio rock that just didn't make it - four good tracks and fifteen pieces of cereal filler. My take on radio is this: Record companies pay DJ's to play mediocre music OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER until it becomes ACCEPTED by the listening audience - not just tolerated, appreciated!! Will someone PLEASE explain why anyone BUYS music that the radio crams down their throats for several hours a day? OH BOY! DOG FOOD A-G-A-I-N ! Same old crap, but at least I get to PAY for it this time!
Radio is a programming device telling you what music you like because your highly influential peers are listening to it, so you obviously need to also. The record companies play the music of the "musicians" that will accept the least money for producing the audio feces you're listening to; is it any wonder that it as ALL entirely formulaic with the same instruments/beats/tempo/tone/length/lycrical content & topic in every last presentation of this sonic doo-doo?
QUALITY GOODS SELL THEMSELVES! How many Rolls Royce commercials have you seen? Good rock music is still being produced, but those of you with your head in the sand still listening to the same radio stations you listened to twenty years ago will never find it - forever will you be stuck in a twilight zone of Led Zep, Cream, Skynyrd, Sabbath, Santana, Hendrix and the like (all greats, but let's face the fact that the meat has been cooked off these bones for twenty years or more now).

Show some individuality, dammit. Don't be such a follower. I'll help. Try these on for size: Rev Brown "Psychomachia".....Abraxas Pool "Abraxas Pool".....Greg Koch "The Grip" (or ANY thing else he does).....Jim Suhler & Monkey Beat "Shake".....Ben Trexel "Under The Radar".....Southern Gentlemen "Exotic Dancer Blues"...or go retro with any of the pre-Steve Perry Journey CD's That got NO radio play because they're GOOD MUSICIANS! Where is Steve Perry now that his nuts popped from trying to sing LIKE a little girl, TO little girls for TOO long? This jerk ruined Journey whom spun off from Santana, then reformed in the late 90's to form Abraxas Pool (W/O Carlos)....but by this time these guys didn't have to take NO MONEY from a record company to create some musically sub-standard audio feces for the radio listening masses and instead, created a masterpiece which, like a fine diamond, has to be mined from the vast earth to be appreciated....that's right folks, it takes WORK to reap this reward - great music will NOT be played on the radio making it EASY to find.
Now, put DOWN the radio and back away slowly........

P.S. Amazon Sellers will hype their pathetic CD's with ridiculously rave reviews to get you to buy their audio feces - this game is getting REAL old and is PART of the reason for my chosen user name.

For Serious Music Lovers.......2001-08-25

I love great guitar riffs, and Neal Schon is my favorite guitarist because of this. Clearly, this is a CD for serious fans of music, that has been stated before, of the "Old Journey" before Perry. However, it may appeal to just more. "Untold Passion" is fueled with Schon guitar, and is quite "synthesized" by Hammer, but I love it. Joe Satriani is awesome, and by all means one of the best...keeping this in mind, I then think of Neal Schon...the most underrated guitarist I know. Neal is my inspiration to learn to play the guitar, and his playing in this CD is an example of my awe of his brilliance. If you're looking for Don't Stop Believin', you're looking at the wrong CD, if you're looking for a man who actually makes you feel the guitar with every note, Schon makes it happen. -Favorite tracks: Untold Passion, No More Lies, Arc...shoot, I love it all! --Just A Guy Who Loves Guitars--

Journey meets Jazz.......2000-02-08

Both of these albums are excellent. Great playing from Schon and Hammer. If your a fan of the orginal Journey (before Steve Perry)they had three albums which are all great.You will love this. Great obsure albums from the early 80's at a good price. Enjoy

Cross late 70's Journey and the Fusion talants of Jan Hammer. For Hammer fans, you can hear the developing style that later was to become the foundation of Jan's film score work ("Secret Admirer", "A Night in Heaven") and Miami Vice. The instrumental pieces are first rate for the era. When "Here to Stay" and "Untold Passion" where released on vinal in '81 and '82, I wore the groves on the albums. This is a "must have" for Hammer fans

Check This Guy Out!.......2003-03-06

I bought this record on the recommendation (actually, insistance!) of a friend in Pittsburgh, who knew I was a major Springsteen and Jackson Browne fan. When I went to visit her last weekend, I had the good fortune to see a live show. He's got a new record coming out and he mostly did songs from that. A trip to his website re-confirmed that it's going to be less raw and bare bones acoustic than this one (he's got some of the tracks from the new record up there.) That show gave me a whole new appreciation for this record and since last weekend, this CD has not left my car. I'm telling you, if you like great singer/songwriters, this guy is the real deal. (P.S. - Thanks, Dana!)

...up to expectations. Love his voice! In a world of forgettable music and meaningless lyrics, it's great to have discovered this guy. Went on his website and it says he's working on something new. I will definitely be looking forward to the next one and would highly recommend this album!

Feels like home to a former Pittsburgher to see Bill Deasy on television! I couldn't believe my eyes at first and had to check to see if it was my favorite singer songwriter from my home town! I immediately pulled out "Spring Lies Waiting" and it's been on repeat play ever since. I hope that "good things happen" for one of the most talented singer/songwriters around, Pittsburgh or not! Just ordered "So Close To Home"...can't wait to hear it!

Great CD.......2001-08-29

This CD is lyrically brilliant delivered with the cool yet passionate voice of Deasy. It is very mellow. Check out his Gathering Field CD's for the same lyrically genius and passionate singing but with more rock and energy. Latest is called So Close to Home, but Reliance and Lost in America are all awesome. Deasy is one to watch with the best stuff ahead of him.
