5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher early music fan.......2005-12-21

The 4 cantatas performed on this disc were all composed in 1707-08,when Bach was in the first flush of youth, in his early 20's. He was writing cantatas for every Sunday service and at the same time was organist and choirmaster at a church in Muhlhausen. In Bach's day the 4 soloists would have been members of the small chorus; in this recorded performance the soloists serve, together, as the chorus. In the end, we have to say that Bach wrote his most sublime music for the church; but most important, his writings have a spiritual power, a solid strength and sincerity that cannot be traced to technique, but to the inspiration of pure genius. And the 4 soloists on this disc bring out very clearly his greatness!!!!There are quartets, duets, trios and solos all accompanied expertly by the Purcell Quartet. In addition we have recorders, oboe and bassoon to add to the overall instrumental "color". Some of the high points for me: "In deine Hande.." Michael Chance (countertenor solo);"Den Tod....." Emma Kirkby & Chance duet. It's all great music and a must if you are an Early Music fan!

    4 out of 5 stars Beware Mislabeling!.......2007-04-20

I have no quibble with the excellent reviews accorded this COMPILATION OF TRACKS FROM THE FIRST 27 ALBUMS of the Hyperion Schubert Edition. HOWEVER, the labeling here is misleading. THIS IS NOT #34 of the Schubert Edition!!! I purchased it thinking it was, and then discovered it's just a teaser compilation to purchase the set. Now I have duplication.

Whoever tags items has a great responsibility to consumers to do so very carefully. I got my copy from someone listing off this site. Because the original is mislabeled, so are all the new/used offerings linked to this site.

Amazon employees, please fix the problem and remove the desgnation "34" before the next unsuspecting consumer buys something she doesn't want.

5 out of 5 stars Discovering the Schubert Songs.......2005-07-02

Franz Schubert (1779 -- 1828) composed more than 600 songs beginning from the age of about 14 until days before his death. He virtually invented the art song, and he remains the greatest composer of song in any form. Schubert had astonishing lyrical gifts and the best of his songs flow with an irrestible spontaneity. If he had composed nothing else, his output of songs would be among the treasures of music and would entitle him to the highest rank as a composer. Brahms, who was also a master of the art song, once said that there was something to be learned from each of Schubert's efforts in this form. I have loved Schubert's songs for many years and know of no other music that so readily melts my heart.

There are many ways to approach Schubert's songs and a multitude of choices on CD of both historical and contemporary recordings. The CD under discussion "A Voyage of Discovery" bids fair to be the best place to start for a newcomer. This CD is part of a monumental project, consisting of 37 CDs, to record Schubert's entire song output on Hyperion, a British label. The project was conceived by pianist Graham Johnson who is the accompanist throughout the series. Each CD in the Hyperion series comes with an extensive booklet including the texts of the songs and great detail about the poetry, Schubert's life, and the music. Each CD is also performed by one of the great singers of our day, beautifully accompanied by Johnson. But each of these CDs, alas, is expensive. And all but devoted listeners might be intimidated by 37 CDs of song.

Thus, this sampler is valuable because it is culled from the first 27 CDs in the series and includes selections by 24 outstanding singers such as Peter Schrier, Lelicity Lott, Ian Bostridge, Brigette Fassbaender, Elly Ameling, and many more. The CD was obviously prepared to encourage the listener to explore the Hyperion series further, buy it also serves as an outstanding introduction to Schubert. The songs on this CD are among Schubert's masterworks, and each is performed by a different artist. Thus the listener receives a rare opportunity to hear an introductory selection of Schubert performed by many singers in different styles. (Most samplers feature the work of only a single artist or two.) And the disk is much less expensive than its companions in the Hyperion series.

The works flow and sing, and the best way to approach this CD is to sit back, listen and enjoy. The CD encourages this approach because there is little in the way of program notes and song texts are not provided -- not even the names of the poets. But the music is lyrical and of immediate appeal. My favorites pieces here include Peter Schreier singing "Der Liebiche Stern"; Dame Felicity Lott singing "Am See"; Ian Bostridge's inspired rendition of "Mein!" from Schubert's song-cycle "Die Schone Mullerein"; John Mark Ainsley's rendition of Shakspeare's "An Silvia", Adrian Thompson's "Trost im Tranen", and Elly Ameling singing " An den Fruhling". I also enjoyed Arleen Auger's singing of a Schubert "Romanze" which features a part for the clarinet and Sarah Walker singing a version of "Standchen" with an accompaning chorus. But the entire CD is moving, lovely music.

This CD is a joy in itself for those listeners who can be satisfied with a basic exposure to the Schubert songs. But it is also a good place to begin for listeners who want to hear more of Schubert -- either on the Hyperion series or on the many other CDs of the songs that are readily available to be explored and enjoyed.

    5 out of 5 stars FOUR-AND-TWENTY SINGERS.......2004-05-24

How the numbers have been done is a little obscure. 26 songs, sung by 24 singers, have been selected from the first 27 records in the omnibus set of Schubert Lieder from Hyperion. Bostridge features twice, and I imagine there will be no complaints about that. The other artist to appear twice is Sarah Walker, and that is more of a mixed blessing, for several reasons. The songs are not exclusively solo works. The `Staendchen' here is neither the familiar Rellstab number from the Schwanengesang nor the Shakespeare `Hark hark the lark' but a piece with solo and male chorus, and the Romance sung by Arleen Auger has a clarinet obbligato played by Thea King. The piano accompaniment is provided throughout by Graham Johnson.

A few minor quibbles apart, this is my idea of a perfectly heavenly record, outstandingly well engineered. The selection is a judicious mix of familiar and unfamiliar. Who Is Sylvia is here, as are the Erlking and Mein from the Mill songs. Special favourites of my own are Der Allmacht and Mayrhofer's Aufloesung, both superb opportunities for a big voice, and the works cover all of Schubert's short career with Deutsch numbers ranging from 113 to 920. I think I would have liked Elizabeth Connell to hit Der Allmacht just a little harder. At the start I thought that Johnson might have been using a little too much pedal, but when I felt that most in the Sailor's Song to the Dioscuri he immediately delighted me with a lively and bouncing accompaniment in the next number Who Is Sylvia. My one real reservation concerns Erlkoenig, sung by Sarah Walker. For me, this is just not a song for a woman. Three of the four parts - father, child and the Erlking himself -- are explicitly male, and I imagine one takes the narrator to be male as well. Even more, for the one and only time on the entire disc I'm not happy with the performers' concept of the song. The tempo is too fast for my liking - the father is galloping rapidly, but any suggestion of panic ought to be reserved for the end. I also like a clean drumming sound in the piano right hand with a good strong accent on each of the four beats, clearly suggesting the hoofbeats of the horse, and too much pedal spoils it for me. What is also lost is the wonderful way the tension should relax without loss of pace before the Erlking's first song, and there is no sinister quality to the Erlking's tone as there needs to be. Fischer-Dieskau and Moore are not supplanted in my affections here.

And that's about it by way of criticisms. A disc featuring Schreier, Lott, Bostridge, Fassbaender, Allen, Baker, Mathis, Rolfe Johnson, Auger, Ameling and Varcoe to name but some can be expected to be a bit of a celebration, and that's exactly what it is. The liner booklet is even more than usually inadequate with no texts. It does not tot up the playing time either, but for me this recital was over almost as soon as it began, so much did it keep me in raptures. Strongly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A unique form of music.......2002-03-18

Early Krieg isn't structured in the same way most music attempts to be. It is a pure hurling forth of emotion, unleashing the forces within the subconscious mind that are living in terror and hatred underneath everyday civility. Your inner beast will resonate to these chaotic narratives and darkly textures infernal sonic landscapes. Lord Imperial's characteristic vocals here are grim and unyielding in the style of the oldest school of underground blackmetal.

    4 out of 5 stars Oh yeahhh...............2001-07-24

Well...I'll agree with the previous reviwer. This mCD (a teaser for a new full length, I hope) IS good, but Rise of the Imperial Hordes had that magic touch. Imperial does some good work here...It's nothing out of the simplistic black metal vein, but that style works here...Andrew Harris's engineering job is quite miserable, but that was probably intended (though the Harris/Imperial project Weltmacht has amazingly crisp, though still raw, sound quality-go figure). The drum performance on the first few tracks is quite chatic, and it's nice to here an acoustic drum performance in this age of "trigger everything" mentality (I mean does Hellhammer even know what an acoustic bas drum sounds like anymore?!?!?). A nice addition to the burgeoning USBM ranks, though I've heard better (from all involved). Keep an eye out for that Weltmacht album, if Elegy records can actually figure out to release an album (DAMN YOU ELEGY! WHY ALL THE DELAYS?!?...). Anyway, fans of the USBM sound will love this. I know I do!

3 out of 5 stars raw and furious..........2001-05-20

Krieg's latest offering on CD is his most straight forward one.. If you don't know or have never heard Krieg's musik, this is raw/chaotic (noisy) BM in the vein of the ancient gods like : profanatica, beherit, blasphemy.. so you know this is gonna be really noisy BM. The vocals are weak in comparison to his previous albums, but still have somewhat ofa nasty feel to 'em. Well, this mCD isn't bad at all, it's just that he's done a lot better.. I must also say that the production on the 1st 4 songs are totally flat sounding, and take away a lot of power from the instruments (what was akhenaten thinking?) , but on the last track, everything sounds better (the guy in bloodstorm drums on this song). If you're into chaotic/noisy BM, don't pass this one up... Hails!

    5 out of 5 stars A Gracious Souvenir!.......2005-08-29

Edita Gruberova remains one of the more important recitalists and opera singers of the 20th Century: her Strauss roles such as her ownership of Zerbinetta from 'Ariadne auf Naxos' are legendary. She not only possessed a voice of thrilling coloratura range, but she also was technically able to dash off endless trills, individualize her technique for the song/aria of the moment, and amidst all her technical wizardry still convey the text like few others of her day.

This thoroughly successful recording was made during a recital in the 1980 Salzburg Festival when Gruberova was at the peak of her powers as a singer and communicator. Ably accompanied by Erik Werba she owns the stage with lieder by Schubert, Mendelssohn and Strauss. Joining Gruberova and Werba for the Schubert 'Der Hirt auf dem Felsen' is the fine clarinetist Peter Schmidl in one of the very best recordings of this popular piece. She offers a fine selection of other Schubert lieder and then launches into a less well-known group of songs by Mendelssohn, each seemingly selected to focus on her prodigious talent.

The recital ends, naturally, with her established territorial stance in the songs of Strauss - not the expected standards widely used by others, but the demandingly difficult 'Brentano-Lieder'. Here Gruberova stakes her claim to this repertoire and few coloraturas have been able to match her virtuosity. This album is highly recommended not only for those already familiar with Edita Gruberova, but for those who appreciate the fine art of intelligent and demanding lieder recitals. 5 out of 5 stars 79 minutes with a master charmer........2001-02-08

It would be hard to imagine a better souvenir of a singer than this! Unfortunately, WW2 kept the fine Viennese singer Erich Kunz (1909-1999) out of recording studios for all but the last 10 years of his career. During those busy ten years, however, he featured in many complete opera and operetta recordings, produced mainly by Walter Legge, while maintaining a busy performing schedule. I recall seeing him night after night in Vienna, and also in Germany in "Die Meistersinger". A slight and trim figure, he exuded so much charm and comic talent across the footlights that the beauty of his velvety baritone voice and his innate musicality tended to pass me by.

Thanks to recordings however, and especially in the case of this Testament CD, his singing can be treasured forever. The Mozart opera excerpts suited his voice like a glove. Notice too, that there is a hitherto unpublished duet here with the adorable Irmgard Seefried. There's plenty of operetta items, some borrowed from the tenor parts but none the worse for that. And there's a selection of the schmalzty Viennese songs he recorded with a small Viennese instrumental ensemble accompanying.

79 minutes with a master charmer.

5 out of 5 stars Charming and Bewitching!.......1999-05-23

I just love this CD! Erich Kunz was, along with Fritz Kreisler, the personification of the Old Vienna. His Figaro, Leporello, and Papageno arias are incomparable. He also sings one Don Giovanni's aria with Seefried as well (and how warm and seductive he was as Don!). J. Strauss arias are sung with melting Viennese charm, well supported by equally sensitive and charming orchestra. The Viennese songs are sung sweetly and with fatherly warmth. The Schrammel ensemble that accompanies Kunz is also excellent and has full of atmosphere. Transfer is well done overall, except I seem to hear some gradual rising of pitch in some of the Viennese songs. But that is just a small flaw. The singing is exquisite, and that is all it matters.

5 out of 5 stars Judith Raskin Sings Schubert.......2006-08-25

When Sony decided to eliminate its budget-priced "essential classics" series, many fine recordings, designed to serve as introductions to classical music, became unavailable. This is particularly unfortunate for this CD collection of Schubert songs because it features an American soprano, Judith Raskin, (1928-1984) who was well-known in her day but who is now in danger of being forgotten. Raskin was born in New York City and began to study voice in earnest while in college. She sang Mozart with the Metropolitan Opera and worked tirelessly on behalf of rising American singers. She served as an instructor for many years at the Manhattan School of Music and at the 92d Street YM-YMHA in New York City. I also have her recording of Mahler's Fourth Symphony with George Szell on Sony which, alas, is now also unavailable.

Raskin's accompanist, George Schick, (1908 -- 1985) also deserves to be remembered. Schick was born in Prague and became associate conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Rafael Kubelik. He is best-known for his tenure as President of the Manhattan School of Music from 1969-1976. This CD offers a rare opportunity to hear Schick as a sensitive pianist and accompanist.

Raskin and Schick perform 18 Schubert songs on this CD, which was initially recorded in 1966. These include three songs from the song-cycle "Die Schone Mullerin" and one song, "Frulingstraum" from Winterreise. There are songs by Goethe, Mayrhofer, and others. Raskin has a pure, light, and lyrical voice which is a joy to hear. She is particularly effective in flowing, strophic songs, such as "Auf dem Wasser zu singen" D. 774, "Die Vogel" D. 691, and "Wohin?" (from Die Schone Mullerin). She also captures the smoldering intensity of "Nachtviolen" D. 752 and "Auflosung" D. 807, set to texts by Schubert's friend Mayrhofer. This CD is an appropriate remembrance to the artistry of Judith Raskin and George Schick, and its deletion from the catalogue is regrettable.

This CD also includes selections from three sopranos who are still alive but no longer actively performing. The New Zealand soprano, Kiri Te Kanawa accompanied by pianist Richard Amner performs three songs in a burnished, expressive voice, including Schubert's earliest masterpiece, "Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel", D. 118. The great Dutch singer, Elly Ameling sings two infrequently-performed duets with tenor Peter Pears and her frequent accompanist, Dalton Baldwin. The performance of ""Licht und Liebe" D 352 is moving indeed. Finally, soprano
Judith Blegen is featured on one short song, "Ich schleich bang und still" D. 787, accompanied by Gervase de Peyer on Clarinet and Charles Wadsworth on piano. This lovely work is performed much less often than Schubert's famous lengthy piece for clarinet, piano, and voice, "The Shepherd on the Rock."

Kanawa, Ameling, and Blegen add much to this CD, but their recordings remain accessible. When this CD was available, its main attraction was as an introduction to Schubert lieder. With the removal of the CD from the catalog, there are many other recordings which serve that purpose. Thus, this CD will now primarily be of interest to collectors of Schubert lieder who want to remember the singing of a great American soprano, Judith Raskin, of not too long ago.

4 out of 5 stars This album is True Life.......2005-06-03

This album is greatly produced. It displays many different musician's styles within the genre. I find this album to be a pleasant listen. Many elongated synth tracks are used. A lot of 4/4 drum rhythms are used, but these guys vary the music enough to keep me interested. This album is a great buy!

        5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2004-04-02

"Revolution" and "renewal" are the keywords that can be used to describe the newest Lights Of Euphoria release, "Kreig Gegen Die Maschinen" (War Against the Machines). Running the full electronic music gamut, the album exhibits elements of Electro, Synthpop, Futurepop, EBM, and Trance. "True Life" is already a club hit, and the rest of the album is sure to follow. The thumping bass, quirky sounds, well-timed crossfades, and sweeping synths, lead the incredible power of the arrangements to new highs. Featuring guest appearances by Ronan Harris of VNV Nation, as well as appearances by Grendel, God Module, and Davantage, "Kreig Gegen Die Maschinen" is destined to be a classic.
