The Magic and Virtuosity of the South Indian Violin .......2007-06-01
I have listened to Hindustani music - the music of North India - for many years, but was only recently introduced to Carnatic music - the music of South India. Not long ago I attended a concert of the brothers Ganesh and Kumaresh and was delighted by their wonderful music making. But above all, I have never witnessed such stunning musical virtuosity. Ganesh and Kumaresh are a violin duo whose performance on their instruments can only be described as awe-inspiring. I have seen many Western violinists in concert and can only say that seeing & hearing Ganesh and Kumaresh perform must be similar to what it must have been like to experience Paganini in concert. Runs up and down the neck of the violin were done in perfect synchronization - either an octave apart or with one violinist playing the "Vadi" and the other playing the "Samvadi," the first and second most important notes of the raga, respectively. (Although a raga has elements of a scale or a mode, it is much more than this, with each raga associated with a deity, a time of day and season. There is moreover a structural scheme for each raga according to which only certain ascending and descending melodic patterns are permissible.)
The south Indian violin is played - like all instruments in India - sitting down. Therefore, certain modifications were made to the Western mode of playing. The violin is held against the chest and pointed down towards the foot. Violins were apparently introduced to India in the nineteenth century and, though only of limited impact on Hindustani music, have become a staple of Carnatic music, accompanying most vocalists and coming to be the most popular solo instruments.
Like the music of the north, the melodies of the south unfold over a continuously sounded "drone," though this does not really capture its purpose, which is to provide a contrast against which the soloist(s) may perform. Unlike Hindustani music, there is no tabla in Carnatic music; instead the rhythm is provided by a combination of a south Indian instrument called the Mridangam, which can sound like a tabla at times, but has its own distinct sound, and a simple clay pot out of which a good performer can coax a staggering array of interesting sounds.
This CD is the debut recording of Ganesh and Kumaresh, despite the fact that they have been performing together since they were small children. I highly recommend it as an excellent introduction to Carnatic music to those of you who may only be familiar with Hindustani. One further difference worth noting is that the pieces in Carnatic music tend to be shorter - or at least those of Ganesh and Kumaresh are - than those of most Hindustani music. The alaps, when compared with those of the north, seem rather short. But there is still a great deal of musical development that is done in a most impressive way.

Compelling live performer.......2004-03-17
Seeing Earl Thomas perform over the weekend was a pefect complement to the Hi Records compilaton I have been listening to recently. Thomas is a compelling live performer, in the style of Al Green, and that alone should make people buy this album. He believes what he is singing and his intelligent conversation with the audience between songs was quite refreshing.Strong band, back-up singers. I'd go see him again.
A terrific blues singer.......2003-12-21
I've been listening to Earl Thomas for many years now. This is his first album that has hit the big time. He has a very soulful voice with a great range. I've enjoyed all of his music, but this CD is one of the best by far. "I Won't Be Around" is one of my favorites. "Stronger Than My Flame" is a good sample song if you're looking to try him out. Happy listening!

Great Band, Great Album, Great Shows.......2001-03-31
Being from Oregon I have seen this band quiet a few times live, and they are killer live band. This being their only major studio album that I know of is great from start to finish.Definetly pick this one up and help support a growing fanbase you will not be disappointed. After you listen a few times check them out live.
one of the best new CD's i have heard this year!.......1999-09-02
its hard to improve on the country gravy review above. it is a superb album that establishes the tricksters as one of the most versatile and talented bands going today. it is hard to classify them as they blend core elements of rock, jazz, psychedelic jam, and country. and the blend is organic, seamless, and inspired. the musicianship -- guitar, piano, bass and drums -- is first-rate and highly individualized. fans of jerry garcia, david grisman and django reinhardt will instantly recognize a kindred soul and talent in jeff mattson. rob baracco's keyboards are powerful and inspired, as are his vocals -- i love the hornsbeyesque intro to call of the wild. and klyph black on bass and joe chirco on sticks nail the rhythm section in classic dead tradition. and barry sless just rocks on the pedal steel. a virtuoso performance all in all. plus the cover art is pretty cool. cheers & enjoy, jsg
The Zen Tricksters: Way More Than Just a Dead Cover Band!.......1999-09-02
Being a Trickster fan for many years and having seen numerous shows in NYC and Long Island, I was really pleased to see this talented quartet shine with the release of their new CD, A Love Surreal. All original material, Love's 10 songs encompass many moods which range from the very mystical and beautiful strains of Going Down Slow, featuring a long, spacey jam in which guitarist Jeff Mattson shows his considerable stuff, to the sheer smoking rock of the jumping Eilat. Keyboardist/vocalist Rob Barraco is outstanding on several of the CD's numbers, including Who Are You?, the intense and weighty Say That I Am, powerful Call of the Wild and a very jazzy Where You Want To Be, while bluesman/bassist Klyph Black really belts out the rocker Down the Road which also features drummer Joe Chirco on "the cardboard box." Other incredible Mattson tunes include the lamenting That's All and another long and gorgeous guitar-jammin' Warm Heart. The CD is rounded out with the ethereal Calliope. The production on Love is outstanding and goes beyond the boundaries of normal CD standards by including several songs over 11 minutes in length which feature long jams. If you've seen the Tricksters, or if you simply appreciate music which is well conceived, well written and incredibly well performed, then A Love Surreal is a must for your collection! R. McNally
The Zen Tricksters come of age!.......1999-08-27
With their second cd (A Love Surreal), The Zen Tricksters, an amazingly talented quartet from New York, has shown the music world that their own original material stands on its own eight feet! Known internationally for their improvisational interpretations of the music of the Grateful Dead, this all-original 10 song cd showcases their songwriting skills across a diverse musical spectrum. Eilat and Down the Road are all-out toe-tapping rockers; That's All could be a top ten country ballad; Warm Heart is a bittersweet ballad with an incredible jam; Who Are You? is keyboardist Rob Barraco's tribute to Michael Curtiz' movie Casablanca; Calliope is another catchy tune with massive psychedelic overtones; Goin' Down Slow is a hypnotic powerful effort with an egyptian jam that will enthrall; Say That I Am is powerful, with crescendoes galore; Call of the Wild is extremely pleasing to the ear with harmonies that set this band apart from most others; and Where You Want To Be can only be described as a heavily jazz-influenced New Yorker kind of laid-back tune comparable to Joel's New York State of Mind! The thought-provoking lyrics and incredible musicianship displayed on this effort should send this band of talented New Yorkers to the next level! This is a keeper, folks! peace thru music, country gravy

Valuable effort.......2005-10-14
This album is pretty great. Sure, it's obscure, and it's not very similar to The Standard (Loch Lomond is a side-project of them), but it's still very good. Not every song is spectacular; some are a bit boring, and it's all very morose, which can be a good or bad thing depending on your tastes. I've heard some stuff from their next album, though, and it looks extremely promising. Check out their website www.lochlomondmusic.com the members of the band are good guys, I sent them an email and they personally responded (with genuine interest). I think they have a grand amount of potential, worth looking into.
More unique indie goodness from the Northwest..........2004-01-15
Mesmerizing songs... Dig this A LOT. Violins, cellos, female vocals, intricate keyboard parts and very inventive production. Unlike anything I've heard in a while. Apparently, it's the side project of another stellar NW band, The Standard. Check them out as well... Still this is a great CD and worth hearing as much as anything I've heard in a great while.

A Rare Performer.......2006-01-15
Here's a real treasure. Mary Martin Stockdale does wonders on the keyboard. If you've never heard her music, check her out. You'll be hooked as I was.
from Solo Piano Publications.......2004-11-19
"Timeless" is pianist/composer Mary Martin Stockdale's third album, and is the first for me. Incorporating the three themes of nature, The West, and philosophies of life into her music, Stockdale's style is strong and assured without being brash or overbearing. Her music has a freshness that suggests some improvisation, but it also has strong classical roots. Residing in Colorado, Stockdale has inspirational beauty all around her, and her impeccable playing allows her to convey whatever message she chooses or feels. Both tender and percussive, this is an artist in total control of her instrument.
"Timeless" includes thirteen piano solos, and all are strong and beautiful in their own right. "Willows By the Stream" is a favorite with its lazy grace and elegant melody - gorgeous! "The Calling" is also wonderful. Inspired by the call of a meadowlark, it also reflects those inner voices that tell us to accomplish as much as we can in life. "Catch and Release" is a fishing term, but also symbolizes moments of our lives, caught for an instant before we have to let them go. Darker and pensive, this piece really reaches the heart. "Raindance" reminds me of some of Robin Spielberg's lighter pieces, joyfully dancing among the upper registers of the piano. "Bluebird Waltz" has this same playful spirit, and is delightful. "Smoke In the Valley" is darker and moodier, and is another favorite. Inspired by forest fires in Colorado a few years ago, it carries a dual theme of death and destruction followed by rebirth and new life. "Falling Snow" finishes the collection on a light, carefree note.
"Timeless" is an excellent collection of personal and expressive piano solos. Recommended!
Inspiring music for the soul.......2004-10-21
Although I am not a solo piano music lover per-se, I was given Mary's TIMELESS CD by a friend whom I admire very much with regard to their musical taste. This CD seemed to transcend time and space as I was taken to a place where melody and sound breathed life into the music. Listening to Mary's piano is more than just background music, it is a symphony of the mind. As she has the ability to transform the ordinary and make it extrodinary. Listening to her, one can feel themselves taken away to places where nature and music live in harmony. For if Nature had a soundtrack this would certainly be it.
SOME OF THE BEST NEW SOLO PIANO MUSIC AROUND.......2004-09-29
Solo acoustic pianist Mary Martin Stockdale is inspired to compose by three things -- nature, The West and her philosophies of life. Her third album, TIMELESS, contains these themes in tunes such as "Willows by the Stream," "Spider's Web," "Bluebird Waltz," "Smoke in the Valley" and "Runnin' Fence," each of which also stand as metaphors for aspects of life. One of the most-played solo acoustic pianists on radio, Mary lives out in the country in the Colorado mountains and uses the world around her for inspiration. She writes strong melodies, plays with absolute confidence, and is not afraid to use every note on the piano. If you already have enough albums by George Winston and David Lanz in your collection, try one of Stockdale's.

Customer Reviews:
Why were always B-side colleciton of The Wildhearts better than their offical releases?.......2006-02-25
I describe the british greatest metal/rock band the Wildhearts as a good coupling of Metallica and Oasis because of it heaviness and melody. This is sincerely the greatest release by the Wildhearts since the greatest hits (Japanese version-"CD disc 2"). I recommend to get this one first before "the Wildhearts must be destoryed." I have loved the Wildhearts for more than 10 years because of (1) Ginger's unexpected behaviors, (2) Ginger's sweet voice (in spite of his appearance!), (3) extremely heavy but extremely catchy songs, and (4) their intense live performances. Although their early releases are more known for the creativity, I have supported their dramatic change to indusitral aspect in "Endless, Nameless." Their comeback to purely catchly-metal sound was widely welcomed by fans. I guess this CD "Coupled with" is a compilation of all singles released for "Wildhearts must be destroyed", and ironically this is far better than that album! It happened before when they released "Anthem - The Single Tracks" because I thought the songs like "White Lies" and "Zomboid" were better than any songs in "Endless Nameless" except for the "Urge", which is also in the single collection. Anyway, "Coupled With" have a TONS of decent tracks from "Cheers", "The People That Life Forget", "Eager To Leave 'Er" to "Bang!", "If I Decide", and AMONG OTHER! You can NOT be definitely bored listening all 21 tracks in this album, espeically when you dont have any of Wildhearts recent CDs (some songs overlap with other release but they at least re-arranged them). Ginger is absolutely one of true ROCKER who is not only crazy but also genius. I like his attitude toward the media because he is careless of them, rather he hate them. I guess he does not need a support from the media because his music speaks for itself and it certainly does! To conclude, this is hard to get in store but I recommend to order it on line because it is strongly worth it!!!!
Riff After Harmonious Riff.......2004-06-07
The Wildhearts are one of those bands that do what they do so perfectly that they would seem destined for hugeness. But in this imperfect world which often demands style over substance, those of us in the know must spread the word about great music that rewards those who are willing to search for it. This Wildhearts release is a collection of B-sides, limited editions, and other lost items recorded during the latest incarnation of the Wildhearts lineup, since a reformation a couple of years ago of the classic lineup featuring singer/guitarist/songwriting genius Ginger, guitarist CJ, drummer Stidi, and a bassist who may or may not be ambulatory on any given day. The fact that the killer tunes featured here were considered leftovers is a testament to this band's incredible abilities as songwriters and players. The lead-off track "Stormy in the North, Karma in the South" is a perfectly slamming introduction to both this compilation and also to the band's flawless execution of melody and muscle. "Looking for the One" and "Return to Zero" are great examples of brooding Sabbath-like power riffs leading into surprisingly sweet harmony-drenched vocal arrangements. "Putting It On" and "Bang!" up the pop quotient with winning results, and check out the fun-tastic "Cheers" which combines the theme songs of the Cheers and Taxi TV shows and rocks the teeth out of both of them. The power overload on "6:30 Onwards," "Eager to Leave Her," and "Better Than Cable" (my faves among a consistent list of winners) proves that the Wildhearts are almost too good for rock n' roll, and certainly too good to be big in America.
Note that with the Wildhearts' hyper-creative tendencies, their habit of breaking up and reforming regularly, and their various record contracts in various nations, tracking their catalog is getting confusing. The 2003 release *The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed* is thus far the only "proper" album from the band's current incarnation, and is considerably more poppy than the material collected here. *Riff After Riff* is also a compilation of B-sides from this period. If you can afford the import pricing, *Coupled With* makes *Riff After Riff* irrelevant because it contains all of that compilation's thirteen tracks, plus seven more rarities. [~doomsdayer520~]
These Are 'B' Sides ???.......2004-04-03
The latest Wildhearts CD is supposedly a collection of songs that were considered 'B' sides. Well I have news for you, most bands would die to have these gems as their 'A' sides!! One of the aspects of this band that is grossly underrated is their songwriting. The Wildhearts seem to be able to produce an endless stream of great songs. Then you must consider that Ginger has put out quite a few side projects, most notably SilverGinger 5, that have even more great tracks.
Be sure to check out the band on their currect US tour where they are supposrting The Darkness-it should be the other way around to be sure. If you love their CDs you will become even more of a fan after seeing them live.
