The Only Demonstration Disc You'll Ever Need.......2006-06-10

Well, I suppose that depends on the type of music you're testing your equipment for. However, go to almost any online discussion of audio equipment, particularly subwoofers, and you'll come across this disc. Sure, most of the other reviewers mention the sound effects in less than glowing terms. It remains though that this disc contains some of the crazy lowest signals one can buy on disc. The T rex footsteps shake the windows in my house despite being below my hearing range with my Velodyne 12" sub. Incredible stuff. And the glass shattering sound effects in the Terminator theme can melt your tweeters too if turned up too loud. Don't take yourself too seriously for a few minutes and enjoy the noise!
Beyond that, musically this is one of the Cincinatti Pops' finest soundtrack collections. Perhaps the best. Almost all of their recordings are sonically of the highest quality (Copland: Music of America won a Grammy for best engineering), but all too often in recent years the releases have not met the standard of this album. Arrangers that don't begin to care what the composer's intent was or tacking on pre-fab endings are the worst offenders, but most of the selections here meet or exceed the quality of the original soundtracks. All around, a great soundtrack collection.

An Adventure For Your Ears.......2004-06-01

The Cincinnati Pops do an excellent job of faithfully reproducing movie soundtracks and this album is a perfect example. In fact after listening to this CD a few times, I tracked down some of the original soundtracks because I enjoyed the selections on here, such as the "El Cid" music and "Jurrasic Park." I also really enjoyed the music from "Henry V" "Robin Hood,"and "Hunt for Red October." The different tracks go together surprisingly well, like many of the pops other thematic CD's. While it might be helpful to have seen some of the movies the soundtracks come from, it is not crucial. The added soundeffects are a little gimmicky, but fairly short and on seperate tracks, so they can be skipped. If you enjoy movie soundtracks, this is a great investment.

Blows Away All Other Such Compilations!.......2003-04-02

"Caution: Digital Sound Effects of high levels with intrasonic frequencies to 5 Hz. Please establish safe playback levels before playing tracks [3], [5], [19], [20], and [21]. Excessive playback levels could result in damage to equipment."

The above quote is found prominantly on the back cover and is a warning not to be taken lightly. The respective tracks are awesome and should be played, as well as listened to, with great care.

A 20-bit digital recording that is perfect for surround-sound systems, "The Great Fantasy Adventure Album" is a wonder for fans of the sci-fi/fantasy film genre. Highlighting some truly landmark films, the 1994 release showcases compositions from the legends of past and contemporary film scoring. Themes from the likes of Rosza, Williams, Horner, Herrmann, and Elfman are grandiosely featured here.

The best cuts are Goldsmith's "Total Recall: Main Title", "Conan the Barbarian: Anvil of Crom" (Poledouris), and Brad Fiedel's "Terminator: Theme".

Upon hearing this trio, chills will not just go up the spine but will permeate every ounce of one's body

The perfect movie theme collection.......2000-08-16

I have a good number of Kunzel CDs, but this one could easily be called "Mark's Favorite Movie Themes." It doesn't matter that I have many of these repeated on other CDs; it saved me the trouble of having to burn my own 'faves' disc. It's good to see Basil Polodouris' "Conan" and "Red October" themes, he's often overlooked as a film composer, in my book, and regardless what one might think of the movie, the Conan score is still probably the best thing he's ever done. And the hard-to-find "Terminator" theme is hard NOT to listen to, with its highly unusual rythmic motif. I enjoy all the music selections, but having James Horner's sublime theme from "The Rocketeer" was well worth the price of the CD by itself. This is what a movie themes CD should be, and it helps that I happen to like Kunzel's choice of selections, for once. The sound effects that typically accompany these CDs are generally annoying, but I like the sonar segue into "Red October," and the T-Rex roar that precedes "Jurassic Park" is useful for scaring kids at Halloween.

No words can compare how remarkable this cd is. Combined with incredible sound quality, this cd will twist and turn you emotions with every single score. i can honestly say that this disc is the perfect relaxation and energizing thing ever.

Toshiko Akiyoshi has kept her jazz orchestra running for an astonishing 30 years. Her career dates back to the '50s, but it is with the formation of this long-running ensemble that she's come to the fore as a composer with a powerful and unique voice. Influenced by such leaders as Gil Evans and Thad Jones, she similarly combines instruments in subtle and stirring ways. In addition, she has drawn on her own Japanese heritage, weaving into the jazz voicings some of those homeland traditions. She and her husband (tenor saxophonist and flautist Lew Tabackin) are the principal soloists in the big band. For Hiroshima two guests musicians are on-hand, George Kawaguchi on drums and Won Jang-Hyun on traditional Korean flute. This highly personal album is built around the title suite which also features short narrated interludes in Japanese (read by Ryoko Shigemori), marking the day from the small and vulnerable vantage points of Hiroshima residents. --David Greenberger

State of the Art Jazz.......2004-10-20

I have been neaning to check out Toshiko Akiyoshi for a while, but somehow, something always came up, and I missed her many live gigs in NY, so I picked up this album.

This album made me regret not seeing her all those times I could have, but it made up for it. It's fantastic, amazing jazz, that neither condescends to popularity, or gets lost in snobbery. It's a style of jazz that is soundly grounded in the roots of the form, her japanese roots, and her own ideas and expression.

I have highly recommend buying this album. It's a must have for any jazz fan who wants to see the art form's progress beyond "cool" or the latest cute vocalist.

Destined to become a Classic.......2003-05-08

Toshiko Akiyoshi at her best, when you hear those strains of Long Yellow Road begin this album you know you are listening to Toshiko Akiyoshi, and her band, having a ball, playing to a live audience.

If you are a fan you need it in the collection, if you don't know Toshiko Akiyoshi, perhaps you should try some of her other albums first, but this is an excellent CD!

Good, not great.......2007-01-07

There are some gems on this CD. Most of the music is nondescript when you listen to it; it is much more suited to being the background music of a TV show, of course. In other words, it's not like regular music you get on a regular commercial band's CD. In my opinion, the best songs are the Main Titles, in particular the 5th season.

This is a wonderful sound track. Chirstopher Franke catches the mood of the series with his music and it sounds even better when you listen to a recording, away from the episodes. Buy this.

This really is the Best of Babylon 5!.......2001-11-04

Thank you to Christopher Franke and Sonic Images for The Best of Babylon 5! Although I have most of these tracks on other B5 CD's, I really enjoyed this one because of the consistently great music. I would rank this one as excellent, along with my other two favorites, Babylon 5 Volume 2, "Messages from Earth" and the episodic CD, "Sleeping in Light." Two tracks deserve special mention: Track 2 is (I believe) a reworking of music from the album Babylon 5 Volume 1. With the "Battle of the Line" music in the background, Chris Franke adds new ideas to enhance the musical experience. The other notable track is the last one, Track 18 "Bonus Theme." This is a fabulous new track, which I understand was written for the (unfortunately never released) Babylon 5 CD-Rom game. This is six minutes of great music, that cannot be mistaken for anything other than "Babylon 5-style" music. It's a thrilling piece, which alone makes me glad I bought the CD. Let's hope we get the same quality offering with the "Legend of the Rangers" movie soundtrack, which I hope will be released next year.

Loved Movie..so I bought the score.......2005-09-02

First and foremost, I thought the Abyss was a great movie, visually stunning. Another aspect of this fantastic movie was the score, which made certain scenes that much better. At times, the score was better than a scene. Alan Silvestri is a maestro, and this was one of his better works. I strongly recommend it to people who are fans of movie scores. This is one purchase you must have.

Wonderfully atmospheric.......2005-07-22

It's often rumoured that James Cameron chose Alan Silvestri to score this movie, because he and James Horner had had a fallout after Cameron did all sorts of evil things to the music Horner had written for "Aliens." For a decade, the two didn't want to work with each-other, until they successfully reunited on "Titanic."

But Silvestri was not a bad substitute for Horner at all. In fact, I wonder whether Horner would have written such a memorable score like Silvestri did. Part percussion-driven, part synthesizer-atmospheric, "The Abyss" really stand out as one of Silvestri's best.

More or less, the album more can be divided into two parts: tracks 10, 11, 12 and 13 - and the rest.
The earlier part of the score is the most story-driven and varied, with some great action sequences - especially "Sub Battle" and "Lindsey Drowns," the latter having some great percussion effects where you can almost see what's happening on screen.

The later part of the album is mostly atmospheric synthesizer accompanying Bud's descend into the mysterious depths of the abyss. It's breath-taking and done right to the last note. It goes from claustrophobic to mysterious and ends in majesty with a wonderful main theme.

I remember seeing the movie as a tweenager and how awed I was at the atmosphere the music created, coupled with the photography. Buying this album will absolutely not hurt your bank account.

This one gets 4 stars - it's a classic.

OK but could go deeper.......2003-04-27

The funny thing about The Abyss is that it's s great film but I'd be hard pushed to say exactly why, or pick out which scene particularly makes it. Maybe I just like diving- enough that I once built a closed circuit breathing set. I don't have a TV so it was 8 years between when I heard about it and when I got around to seeing it. This soundtrack is fair enough but it misses out the music the guys actually listen to in the film, which is a shame. Listening to "Too Much Pressure" by The Selecter in a deep sea habitat has to be a deliberate joke, and a pretty good one. It is touches like that which mean you can't help but like the film and find the people in it believable. The thing they sing along to isn't bad either. It's a shame this music isn't on the CD as it means a lot more to the film than some of the 'background' stuff.

Silvestri takes us deep into the Abyss.......2002-10-26

The Abyss is a great soundtrack and fans of Silvestri will absolutely love. His trademark writing style is present throughout most of the score. The main reason to get this score is definitely for the last 3 tracks, especially "The Finale". In these 3 tracks, Silvestri unleashes awe and wonder and lets the orchestra and choir soar into the heavens for about 13 minutes. This material is some of the best music he has ever written and appears in compilation CDs everywhere. The "Main Title" hints at the material in the last 3 tracks and then bursts into a snare drum solo. The action music, which is also good, is trademark Silvestri with brass and percussion, present in "The Crane", "The Fight", and "Sub Battle". The real treat is the last 3 tracks, so if listening to the score from beginning to finish, be patient and wait for the last 13 minutes. It's well worth the wait!

TRACKS 11,12,13.......2001-09-10

The beginning of track one all the way till the percussion come in and some parts of tracks 3,5 and the whole tracks of 11,12,13 are really the main reasons to buy this soundtrack.Those pieces go deeper than the thaught of the scenes in the movie in which they take place.What I'm having trouble with is why didn't James Horner score this one I mean he scores all of James Cameron's films,oh well maby James was busy scoring another film.Anyway Alan still made a fantastic job the whole score is good,but tracks 11,12,13 are the best.

The brilliant Brodsky Quartet is at it again, offering entertaining, virtuosic collaborations with stars of the pop music world with which both classical and popular music lovers will be equally entranced. Whether it's lolling strings underpinning Meredith Monk's enchanting, wordless syllables or assisting Jacqui Dankworth in a torch-like ballad (The Abyss) or nervous pizzicati to go along with a song by Sting, the ear is constantly being treated to a new surprise: if a quartet of strings and a voice can do it, they do it here. Errolyn Wallen and the Brodskys offer a languid ballad called "Daedalus," while Bjork puts her usual, original (if vaguely tiresome) stamp on "I've Seen It All." The CD opens and closes with songs sung by Elvis Costello whose unique, vibrato-filled voice remains remarkably expressive; the last number, "Real Emotional Girl," is a Randy Newman song in which the strings of the Brodskys feel and put across the singer's anguish in equal partnership. Errollyn Wallen's track, Daedalus, will break your heart and put it back together again. This is a quiet, absolutely beautiful testament to her power, verve and finesse as a composer. Genius.

Appropriate Title for Sharp Performances on a Bumpy Road.......2005-06-06

The Brodsky Quartet remains as audacious as ever with their new recording. This time out, the intensely dramatic string quartet spent time in select UK schools where they composed new songs with schoolchildren. Those are presented here alongside the quartet's arrangements of songs by more established writers such as Elvis Costello, Sting, Björk and Ron Sexsmith. The result could have been a mess, but it's not. Far from it, it's a soulful and sometimes challenging album adhering together rather tenuously as an avant-garde theatrical album. There are several peaks and valleys throughout, though luckily the high points make this a worthwhile disc to get.

Sting's performance of his gypsy ballad, "Until...", sounds especially influenced by Kurt Weill, as does Björk's familiar dirge, "I've Seen It All", from her 2000 cinematic foray with Lars von Trier, "Dancer in the Dark". Jacqui Dankworth lends a languorous vocal to Kate Curtis' and Will South's "The Abyss" and the more funereal "Song" by Daniel Monk. And a nice surprise is the Gershwin-inspired "I Never Went Away" by Richard Rodney Bennett, though it does feel a bit out of place among the more experimental music. Truth be told, some tracks are plain odd, such as Meredith Monk's "Gotham Lullaby" with its random yelps and minor-chord la-la's and Errollyn Wallen's meandering, overlong "Daedalus", a rather pretentious art song. The schools provide two of the highlights here: "Swearing at the Moon" by Arieh Miller of JFS in London, and Venus Flytrap by students from Blatchingham Mill School in Hove. Both songs are performed by Ian Shaw, whose biting vocal mixes well with the discordant string arrangements. Elvis Costello frames the recording with the jaunty opener, "My Mood Swings" and his closing cover of Randy Newman's "Real Emotional Girl", a slow, heartbreaking ballad with Newman's trademark observations. The quartet itself performs with their brio intact, applying a lot of color and texture to the songs.

Rued Langgaard (1893-1952) was the odd duck of Danish music. He remained doggedly Romantic at a time when Romanticism was out, and he had his own funny little experiments with music that noboby particularly liked. We owe a debt to Chandos and Danacord for keeping Langgaard's music current. Music of the Spheres (1916-18) predates Gyorgy Ligeti by 50 years with its bright, pointillistic assertions and groups of ideas that evolve to their own inner logic. As demonstrated in Tonebilleder (Four Tone Pictures), Langgaard's music has an openness that allows his tone clusters to expand, contract, or simply repeat (as Ligeti would do much later). This Chandos disc containing two pieces by Danish composer Rued Langgaard is one of the most pleasant surprises this fan of modern-classical music has come across. Langgaard (1893-1952) was an outsider and eccentric in Danish music life, a virtuoso organist who succeeded only in his late forties at getting a position, and a composer of wild tales of the Antichrist coming into the world who found it almost impossible to get his music played. In the late 1960s, his music was rediscovered by scholars and his importance in Danish musical history is now certain, but he is still little-known in the modern-classical scene. We should be grateful to the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra & Choir and Gennady Rozhdestvensky for their performance and to Chandos for releasing the recording.

"Music of the Spheres" for soprano, chorus, orchestra, and distant orchestra (1916-1918) is stunning. The innovations here are considerable: exploiting the performance space in the use of two orchestras, writing for an "open" piano where glissandi are produced directly on the strings, and of course the clusters and polyphonic webs, massive and seemingly motionless blocks of sound reminiscent of Gyorgy Ligeti. Indeed, the Hungarian composer exclaimed that he was a Langaard imitator when Per Norgard showed him a copy of the score in 1968. But the purity of the string writing reminds me of Alexander Knaifel, and the massive proportions of the orchestral writing at its loudest is somewhat like Sandstroem's "The High Mass".

But, as is often said, it wouldn't matter how much Langgaard were ahead of his time in "Music of the Spheres" if the music wasn't great. And it is, one of the most moving half-hours of orchestral music I'm acquainted with. Langgaard was a Romantic in a time when Romanticism was out of fashion, and the proportions of what the listener may recognize as struggle, momentary defeat, and victory are just as powerful as in Mahler.

"Music of the Spheres" is an exceptional piece in Langgaard's total output. The "Four Tone Pictures" for soprano and orchestra are somewhat more typical of his art. Written on poems by J. Blicher-Clausen, Ivan Turgeniev, and Holger Drachmann, they are fairly tame lieder. These suggest that the modern-classical fan can pass on most of Langgaard's music, but "Music of the Spheres" is so good that at least this disc should be in your collection.

One of the most extraordinary works ever written.......2003-11-21

Music of the Spheres, by the eccentric Danish composer Rued Langgaard, really is the work that has everything. Written between 1916 and 1918, it uses a multitude of techniques that would not be rediscovered until after the wars. Multifarious tone clusters, floating micropolyphony, a piano played directly on the strings, an entire offstage orchestra, blurred choral singing, prefigurations of minimalism: you name it, this work has it. Yet it also has Scriabinesque ecstasy, Straussian opulence and a wacked-out religious subtext in which Christ and Antichrist clash in the violent climax to the whole work.

None of this would matter, though, if the music weren't any good. But it is good--probably the best thing Langgaard ever wrote (so far I've heard about 30 of his works, and none of them matches this one). The various short episodes flow one into another with perfect clarity and logic, the orchestration is superlative, and the dramatic writing at the climax is sonically overwhelming. Fortunately, Chandos match this work with a tremendous performance by the Danish National Radio Symphony and Choir, conducted by that indefatigable servant of underperformed music, Gennady Rozhdestvensky. This recording should be considered the best currently available, and it outstrips the rivals with ease.

Any other work isn't likely to fare so well in comparison to this, but the Four Tone Pictures are by no means eclipsed. Opulent songs in a Straussian harmonic language--though lacking the German composer's gift for melody--they are the perfect way to come down from the musical high of Music of the Spheres.

Music to Amaze Your Ears.......2003-07-23

Rued Langgaard was the man that time forgot. Completely neglected in his native Denmark because he did not fall within the prevailing neo-classic aesthetic set by Nielsen, Langgaard was rediscovered in the 60s when Per Norgard gave a score of Music of the Spheres to Gyorg Ligeti at a competition and after a minute Ligeti announced, "it seems as though I am a Langgaard imitator." Though Langgaard was essentially a conservative late romantic composer, he was capable of some real moments of innovation. He not only presaged Ligeti's color style, but also elements of minimalism, most especially in his string quartets.

Music of the Spheres is Langgaard at his most original. This work is a stunning series of small tone pictures. From the very beginning of the work, with the shimmering cluster of string harmonies over ominous timpani, through out the work, experiment reigns. Langgaard is always tonal, but in this work shows a fascination with orchestral sound and tonal clusters that was probably about 50 years ahead of the times. And yet, in the middle of the work there are sections that could come directly from Schonberg's early Gurrelieder or even the symphonies of Gade. It is a truly astonishing aural sound feast and should be a staple of the repertoire.

The accompanying Tone Pictures, four tone poems on nature themes, are also quite beautiful, though much more conventional as music. Here is Langgaard the Romantic and he is quite a good Romantic actually. The orchestrations are lush, the harmony sensuous and there is just enough oddness to mark the work as Langgaard's and no one else's.

This Chandos disc is exemplary in sound and the performance by Rozhdestvensky is definitive I think. Even if you are afraid of unusual or experimental work, this is a disc that you can take to your heart. It is stunning and beautiful and has my highest recommendation.

Hypocrisy is not your typical death metal band. In some ways they are great, having given us some great "Swedish" Death Metal, and over the years, they have given us some stinkers, such as the horrid "Abducted" or some of the drab "Ballads" (wtf??) they have done. One masterpiece they did, was 1993's Osculum Obscenum. Hardly any filler, no ballads or "experimental" songs, just plain, in your face Death Metal. "Into the Abyss" is another great album. Out of ten tracks, I liked Seven of them, and the seven were all killer cuts. I understand that some like the "experimental" Hypocrisy, but to me, some if it is very repetive, almost to the point where it gets on my nerves. If you dont have "Osculum Obscenum" then pick this up. Its a great effort and a pleasure to hear another "Death" metal album If you want another great effort that is more on the experimental side, then try 2002'2 "Catch 22" Its strays away from their death metal roots, but it is a solid album.

Why complain about a Hypocrisy album?! Hypocrisy are about complaining about the state of humanity, not about their music! Besides, their music is the wickedest on Earth. They have variety in their songs and albums, so just shut up and buy this along with every other Hypocrisy cd. Don't forget to buy their older cd's aswell.
HAIL HYPOCRISY (THE BAND, NOT WHAT IT MEANS...BAD JOKE).

Into the Abyss..........2005-01-27

Ok. First off, if you are new to Hypocrisy do not buy this cd first. This is the most hit and miss album these guys have released. Go with Abducted, their self titled album, or the Arrival. There are some great songs on this cd (some of their best, in fact) but also some of their worst.

Legions Descend - 3/5 - A good opener, but nowhere near what Hypocrisy is capable of. It reminds me a bit of Immortal. It's good at first, but then it just seems to drag on and on. Not a good thing when the song is under four minutes.

Blinded - 4/5 - This is much better than the first song. Fast and thrashy with a somewhat epic sounding chorus. Great breakdown as well.

Resurrection - 4/5 - For some reason, I have always liked Hypocrisy's slow songs better than their fast ones. I think they are heavier. This song sounds a lot like The Fourth Dimension, but with ligher vocals and a great chord progression for the chorus.

Unleash the Beast - 5/5 - Now I am starting to hear some of the S/T album. With clean vocals, this song would have easily been at home on any Pain album, but here it sounds like a fantastic cross between Another Dead End for Another Dead Man and Self Inflicted Overload. It has, dare I say, a punk feel to it. Kind of like D.R.I. with a lethal injection of testosterone.

Digital Prophecy - 3/5 - Killing Art no. 10? This song just does not catch my attention. It seems pointless.

Fire in the Sky - 5/5 - In the midst of what is probably Hypocrisy's most mediocre album is one of their greatest songs. Up to this point on the cd, some songs are good, but this is the first that seems really inspired. This is a prime example of what makes this band great.

Total Eclipse - 4/5 - Good God. Killing Art no. 11... Short and sweet, it is a great fast paced song, but Hypocrisy has been here before and done it better.

Unfold the Sorrow - 6/5 - In my opinion the best song on the cd. Just great. Very dark lyrics about a father killing his daughter (at least that is what I gather). Nice guitar solo, and a chorus that will be stuck in your head for months.

Sodomized - 3/5 - What a nice name for a song. Anyway, it is a good fast song, but nothing new. Good breakdown, but the drumming gets a bit repetative.

Deathrow (No Regrets) - 5/5 - Well, they end this album with a great song. This really sounds like the old Hypocrisy material. Very epic and claustraphobic at the same time. Just gotta love it.

I do like this cd quite a bit and if this was any band but Hypocrisy it might even get five stars. But if a band is capable of releasing flawless albums (as they have several times), then they should be held to that standard. Unless, of course, they are experimenting, which here they are not.

Pulverizing!........2001-12-27

For those who have followed Hipocrisy during the past decade, this album marks an (arguably) welcome return to the fast and fierce death metal of their early days. Whether you prefer their wilder early stage, or the moodier sound of their latter recordings, you must admit that "Into the abyss" is a brilliant disc, and, together with their fantastic 1999 eponymous LP, probably their best. True Swedish death metal doesn't get any better than this. On "Into the abyss", Peter Tagtgren and company mantain the momentum from the very first opening lines to the last blistering riff, something Hipocrisy has not been able to achieve in many of their previous full-lengh records. There are plenty of warp speed blasters this time around. Terrific numbers like "Legions descend" and "Total eclipse" fully demonstrate that this band means serious business with this album. There are only two slow tempo numbers on this set, the sinister "Resurrected", and the typical Hipocrisy epical, "Deathrow (no regrets)". Slow they might be, but surely they pack as much menacing crunch as the fast ones. There are no fillers on "Into the abyss". Even the tracks contributed by bass player Michael Hedlund ("Fire in the sky") and drummer Lars Szoke ("Unfold the sorrow") snap. Productionwise, Tagtgren got rid of the excessive treble that has been present in the band's records since 1996's "Abducted", and crafted their best sounding album yet, raw but well defined and perfectly balanced. "Into the abyss" is the second outstanding studio LP Hipocrisy delivers in a row. Let's hope they keep up their muse.

Thank god...Hypocrisy is back!.......2001-04-13

Hypocrisy is back after the selftitled album with a more brutal (almost like the beginning) album. All the fans gathered together in happiness because P.Tagtgren and co. are back(after what can be considered their "softest" album)with what made Hypocrisy a great death metal band in their first releases: fast and brutal songs(like the first two albums; 5 total). We'll find less melodies and less slow-melancholic songs(4 total, which I think they're cool). It was said that Peter Tagtgren's solo project "Pain" made him leave the "underground" scene to a more commercial one, in which he doesn`t feel very comfortable; so he wanted to go back to his "roots"... What made this album not as good as their best is that these dudes focused more in the brutality than in the composition or songwriting; a certain lack of imagination, if you prefer. These "return to brutality" is also showed in the cover and the album title(P.T. has something with "the abyss":his studio, his solo project, also a song). Conclusion: Hypocrisy is back with their brutal approach, but for next album, some "fresher" ideas, besides brutality, would be great.
