Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.

Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Moved to tears.......2004-03-18

Never before in my life was i moved so intensely and directly by classical music. I put the first cd in my player and a few minutes later tears are flowing. I find myself dancing and moving to a rythm i already seem to know. Wow, i just have to share that.

5 out of 5 stars Nonesuch delivers.Again.......2002-11-27

John adams is one of the most popular living composers of"modern" classical music[I believe the cutoff point, though arbitrary is usually WWII}.I came to him late, through my husband. Modersn classical music , I said? What the hell is that?My husband kept playing bits and pieces of adams for me, and more and more i found myself amazed. and swayed. His operas have been groundbreaking{Nixon in China} controversial{Death Of klinghoffer},his compostions sublimely beautiful{shaker Loops or harmonium].HIS STATURE IS WORTHY THEN OF SUCH A MONUMENTAL CAREER SPANNING BOX SET.This 10 disc set[great value, again from NONESUCH}encompasses Adams' entire career, and though there are some misses here{I was looking at the ceiling and then i saw the sky doesnt quite fit},it is still magnificent. the Highlights are ,{for me} the Wound Dresser, Chamber symphony,Violin Concerto, of course, Shaker Loops and Harmonuim are wonderful. The true jewels here are Nixon in China, the Chairman dances and the Death of Klinghoffer, which is simply a masterpiece. The set comes with a wonderful book, which contains essay's by Robert Hurwitz {An Uncommon Man}renaud Machart[John adams as seen from europe} and Essays before an earbox by Adams himself.A Chronology and dicography are included. A wonderful study of an American original, worth the investment, Highly highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars harmonia in excelsis.......2001-11-12

I must agree with Mr. Bartlett, particularly with regard to "Ceiling." It may well be because his Violin Concerto and Harmonielehre are so powerful. 4.5 stars.
Interesting, and likely intentional, is that two names in the extensive liner book fail to mention two great and glaringly obvious precursors: Carl Orff and Raymond Scott. Without "Carmina Burana," there would be no "Harmonium." Orff has his mark all over Adams's gifted and epic compositions. Similarly, though there are glib references to "cartoon music," the polymath engineer/musician Scott is a seminal figure in American music, and casts a large shadow over the witty juxtapositions and sense of play one loves in Adams's work. In all, an excellent career overview.

5 out of 5 stars Our greatest living composer.......2001-07-22

As a composer, I'm staggered that anyone could fail to be gripped by this music.

That anyone can use the words "spoiled, overrated" amazes me. I emphatically disagree with "A music fan"'s review.

I don't think it's "mind-numbing"; I think it's spiritual and exciting. To me it's the most substantial music being created in our times.

I'm really sorry that anyone could fail to enjoy it, and really recommend others to listen for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2000-04-02

This compilation should turn even the most curmudgeonly listerner into a fan. Beautifully recorded, great notes -- and it's a heck of a bargain!

5 out of 5 stars Sassy Wind Chamber Music from One of England's Grand Old Men.......2007-06-22

Sir Malcolm Arnold OBE was born in 1921 and died only a few months ago, in September 2006. He was primarily known to most people as the composer of some fine film music -- Bridge on the River Kwai, Hobson's Choice, Inn of the Sixth Happiness among them -- but in latter years there have been several series of releases of his concert music, including wonderful performances of all nine of his symphonies on two different labels, Chandos and Naxos. There has been some sniffing about his light-heartedness and prolixity, but his stature as a major composer of the latter part of the twentieth century is now assured. He wrote a good deal of chamber music, often for friends from his days of playing in the London Philharmonic, but it tends not to be known except to specialists. This CD helps to remedy that by presenting many of his works for chamber ensembles featuring woodwinds, played by members of a fine American wind quintet called East Winds, in some pieces supplemented by additional players.

This CD contains 30 bands comprising seventeen different works. Most of them have the 'Arnold sound', which could be characterized as light and neoclassical. His music is often jazz-tinged, usually of the sassy Frenchified sort. It is difficult to hear much of Arnold's wind music without beginning to smile. He writes wonderful hummable tunes that stick in the memory, and he has a talent for color and rhythmic invention. Several of the performances here are world premiere recordings: a wind octet arrangement of the overture to 'Hobson's Choice' (that delicious 1954 film starring Charles Laughton) done with Arnold's permission by Uwe Radok; 'Dream City', written when Arnold was seventeen as a piano piece for his mother and arranged for wind quintet, again with Arnold's blessing, by Paul Harris; 'Grand Fantasia' for piano, flute and clarinet; 'Overture for Wind Octet' (1940); and 'Fantasy for Flute and Clarinet'.

I particularly loved the insouciance of the 1940 'Grand Fantasia', written under a pseudonym ('A. Youngman', get it? -- he was only nineteen at the time) as a mood-lifter during the Battle of Britain. It was a year later that Arnold joined the London Philharmonic as second trumpet, eventually rising to the principal's chair.

For some reason the 'Duo for Two Clarinets', a late six-movement work, is played as interludes between other shorter pieces. It was written in 1988, after he had concluded the Ninth Symphony and has some of that work's dark, brooding quality mixed in with Arnold's usual wit.

Probably Arnold's most familiar wind quintet music is his 'Three Shanties', finished just after the Second Wind Quintet (which opens this CD and is brilliantly played), it is a set of rollicking tunes, including the familiar 'What shall we do with a drunken sailor?'.

The performances here are all one could ask for. I'd never heard of 'East Winds' before and have some suspicion that they may be an ad hoc group, but whoever and wherever they are, they are marvelous. If you're a fan of Arnold's music and want to explore the chamber music for winds, this CD is for you.

5 out of 5 stars My intro to 20th century music...........2005-11-16

When I was in Dr. Knowles music appreciation class in college, I questioned the validity of modern 'art' music, because I didn't understand it (then). Silly me. He recommended John Adams. The local music store, which was stocked heavily with rap and techno and the like, was very limited in their classical selections. This was the only one they had, so I took a chance and bought it. Talk about opening my eyes (and ears).... the vocal works are absolutely mind blowing. Fog Tropes was a little creepy, but it definitely grew on me. You can call this my gateway CD, because I've been searching out 20th century since then. Thanks Dr. Knowles. :)

5 out of 5 stars A Collection of Music Apropos of our Time.......2003-04-18

With this country once again stunned by a yet another war, we find ourselves in a place where solace and nurturing are necessary and deeply needed. This collection of American composers' works that span a century has been lovingly assembled by John Adams and is performed by the usually conductorless Orchestra of St Lukes here under Adams' direction. The disc opens with the hauntingly beautiful Charles Ives' THE UNANSWERED QUESTION and proceeds with five of his best loved songs for voice and small orchestra performed with subtle clarity and undersatement by Dawn Upshaw in tandem with the orchestra. The last of these songs 'Serenity' blooms into the Ingram Marshall moody and exspansive exploration of fog and foghorns in FOG TROPES. Morton Feldman's quietly simple elegy for his piano teacher 'MADAME PRESS DIED LAST WEEK AT NINETY' is followed with John Adams own 'EROS PIANO', a work written as a memoriam/elegy at the death of Morton Feldman. The disc closes with David Diamond's plangent orchestral work 'ELEGY IN MEMORY OF MAURICE RAVEL'. Only on a CD could such programming exist and we are indebted to John Adams for creating this tenderly profound concert which, though recorded in 1989, seems immensely suitable for listening to today.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant, But Uneven.......2001-01-18

The major work on this CD in terms of length is John Adams' Eros Piano, approximately 15 minutes. As a solo piano work, it is somewhat more purcussive than his orchestral compositions, but, nonetheless, well worth the listen.

The five Charles Ives songs sung by Dawn Upshaw are a treat, as she brings fine musicianship to anything she approaches. The works by Feldman and Diamond are interesting, new experiences, but I find that I will have to expend considerable effort to be able to come to terms with and appreciate the work by Marshall.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best Ives.......2000-01-31

If you want to find out about Charles Ives this isn't the best CD to start out with. Try, "Charles Ives: Quarta sinfonia" or a recording of "The Unanswered Question" these are the works that caused me to fall in love with Ives and only then did his songs make any sense.

5 out of 5 stars Might as well be in a cemetery~!.......1998-10-24

This CD is GREAT. It's moody, almost creepy, but never boring. It would be the perfect music for Halloween or to listen while taking a stroll in the cemetery. I've played it a number of times over the years, and I never get tired of listening to it. Adams and Ives are wonderful composers!

If you're a fan of the theme song of the "Hetty Wainthrop" detective series on PBS's "Mystery!" you might be tempted by the CD cut "The TV Detectives." The theme song melody is a small part of this larger work, but the arrangement just doesn't measure up.
