5 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR STUDY OF LIVING GREGORIAN CHANT.......2007-02-27

Although Gregorian Chant is very carefully tied to particular times and seasons, and therefore recordings of the living chant always feels odd out of season and captured and pinned on display, like fascinating irridescent butterfly wings on cotton under glass, please play this disk and live and breathe a little easier, in peace and in rhythm and in unity.

Gracefully directed by Dr. Marier, this recording wonderfully captures the greatest living Gregorian choir fully active in the United States of America, at the Abbey of Regina Laudis, which daily and nightly maintains the true cycle of Gregorian chant, completely, in the living of the Rule of Saint Benedict with all of the liturgical hours fully chanted as ever through the centuries, per saeculum saeculi. The best way, then, to experience in union this true and living and breathing chant is to spend as much time as possible on retreat at the Abbey in still rural Bethlehem, Connecticut. Lacking that ability, live with this disk, and let it play day and night until it becomes a part of your bones and you sing with it without yet quite knowing it.

I strongly recommend this disk for anyone who fully and deeply wants to know Gregorian Chant, as chanted by a contemplative community of devoted and committed women in America. Hear also their recording, also with Mr. Marier, of the Festal Celebrations of the Virgin Martyrs and Our Lady of Sorrows, which includes the founding Abbess Mother Benedict's blessing.

Please note in particular the most important Marian hymns are included on this disk, for anyone seriously interested in learning the most important Gregorian Marian tones. FOr instance you find here a solemn version of the Magnificat, the greatest hymn of Mary directly from the Gospel of Saint Luke, which is chanted every day at Vespers without exception by any monastic choir worthy of the name. We also may find here Regina coeli and the wonderful seasonal hymn, Salve Regina. Please look closely at the play list and you find nearly every traditional Marian hymn you can recall. Within this collection are scriptural meditations beautifully read by Mother Dolores Hart, an actress who was on her way to becoming the next Grace Kelly (who had then abdicated her throne to take on the throne of Monaco) but entered Regina Laudis monastery instead, filling its readings with the depths of her trained and restrained and profoundly emotional voicings. We are very fortunate she is so well recorded here, and regret she never made at the height of her powers an audiobook of the entire Holy Bible, or at least the Psalms, or Gospels . . .

In other words, what more can you possibly ask for?

Please note the photograph on this product, the Mysteries in the Life of Jesus, Son of Mary, is of the new Abbess, Mother David, who is currently directing the choir in a fresh recording of the hymns of Christmas, a new recording which may be available come Christmas of this year. In the mystery of Bethlehem, that will be well worth adding to your music library, for anyone serious about studying the true Gregorian chant as it is lived and breathed daily by this now too rare and precious choir.

Please also see the soon-to-be-released biography of Mother Benedict from Ignatious Press. Let us learn to cherish our American saints and study from them how to live in peace and loving Catholic community in this quadrant of the hemisphere.

Please see all of the Abbey's rare recordings at their website.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent recording of Gregorian Chants.......2002-04-09

I bought this recording a few weeks ago and it has quickly become a favourite. While Gregorian Chant has become popular, especially with the recordings of Santo Domingo de Silos, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that Gregorian Chant is sung prayer. In hearing the nuns of the Abbey of Regina Laudis sing, you understand that this is something that they experience each day. It is a beautiful recording and is accompanied by beautiful meditations on the life of Jesus read by Mother Dolores Hart, O.S.B.

4 out of 5 stars An admirable exercise of atmospheric intensity.......2005-05-04

"Pentecost III", a landmark on Anathema's career, was somewhat of a crossing bridge to the type of sound they're exploring nowadays. We can notice their death metal roots fading away in each of the 5 songs displayed in this EP. In fact, the only song one can really describe as "death metal" (more like doom/death metal) is precisely the last one ("Memento Mori"), that pretty much stays on the same savage and fast-paced riff for about 8 minutes with a few subtle tempo and key changes, while an angry Darren White screams and growls in protest against the hopelessness of human condition. We're all doomed and Anathema tells you that, loud and clear.
Best song in the album IMO is opener "Kingdom", a hallucinatory trip of anguish and despair that grows into an energetic doom riff, before fading into obscurity again. We also have "Mine Is Yours To Drown In" (an atmospheric journey of experimental noise-rock) the grandiose epic "We, The Gods" (with undeniable classic Iron Maiden-esque influences) and the haunting, nerve-chilling instrumental title track.

Anathema is all about atmosphere and intensity. They stood apart from all their other cousin British doomdeath bands (Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride), who relied more on aggression and brutality. Anathema create mental paintings for you to interpretate in your own special way and this album was way ahead of its time, seeing that it almost foresaw this new breed of noise-metal bands (i.e. Neurosis, Isis, Cult of Luna). It's a shame that they evolved more than they should, turning into an uninteresting pseudo-Pink Floydian act. No point on keeping the search when they had already found their true identity, cemented by their ultimate opus "The Silent Enigma". After that, it was the downfall of the doom Gods...

        3 out of 5 stars A little overrated?.......2002-12-07

Anathema's first release post 'Serenades' came as something of a minor disappointment to me. 'Pentecost III' is the sound of a band in transition, an EP upon which no song sits comfortably with more than one other. That's not a criticism but a sign of the internal intrigues affecting the band at the time with vocalist Darren White who would soon fly the nest.

Of the five tracks I'll start with the poorest & it's worth noting that whereas all the tracks on 'The Crestfallen EP' were specifically crafted 'Pentecost III' does sound a little rushed & thrown together at times. The title track is a forgettable instrumental whilst 'Memento Mori' a re-working of an old demo thrash-bash that relays the band's fascination with both death metal & dear old Iron Maiden.

The other three tracks are far better. Its also here that you start to notice the heavy Celtic Frost influences that are creeping into both the music & the vocals. 'We, the Gods' takes up where 'Serenades' left off & 'Mine Is Yours to Drown In' reminds me a lot of 'Sweet Tears' (also from 'Serenades'), albeit more upbeat, with a touch of mysticism & Duncan's clanging bassline that sythes through the mix.

Best of all is the opener 'Kingdom' with White mournfully wailing over a bleak, picked guitar line before launching into another grunting session behind a bludgeoning, climactic riff. It is also the only song that would offer any genuine hint as to the direction the band would be heading on 'The Silent Enigma' album & beyond. It's the clear high point on a reasonable release but you have to wonder what might have been if tensions inside the Liverpudlians' camp weren't running so high.

5 out of 5 stars the ultimate doom.......2000-03-03

This to me is the climax of Anathema's career. Everything is perfect about this album. Darrens vocals have changed to a sort of "heavy metal" type growl (still good though), the production is heavier than ever, and the songwriting is incredible. Despite the fact that this is supposed to serve as an EP, it could pass for a complete album. This is my favorite by Anathema. If you liked Serenades, get it.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-01-04

This album is extremely well-written. I've very doomy, and contains appealing lead riffs in every song. This band has some sections which sound like extremely heavy metal, and some that sound melodic. The lyrics are very dark but meaningful. Darren White does a good job in that department. Some parts have gothic influences as well. This is just generally well-written and should appeal to most metal fans.

4 out of 5 stars Flawed But Ultimately Very Good.......2004-12-22

Anathema are among the most influencial doom / death metal bands, and though in age they changed their stylings (though still retaining their fantasticly gloomy mindset and becoming more talented, more intelligent, and - dare I say it - an all around better band), their earlier work still holds up today. This reissue is one of the ones that actually is worthwhile, melding the hard-to-find 'The Crestfallen' E.P. with the great, but flawed, 'Pentacost III' E.P. with rather sleek packaging and all lyrics included. Though the package itself is very well put together, most of the problems lie within 'Pentacost III'. While 'The Crestfallen' contains some of the best material that this band has recorded, 'Pentacost III' seems to be somewhat of a forced effort. Again, the songs of the album are absolutely fantastic - "Mine is Your to Drown in (Ours is the New Tribe)" and the title track (which is one of the most haunting istrumentals to ever be pressed to plastic) being the standout tracks - the majority of it seems to darg on and on and on. I am a huge fan of slow and brooding minimalism, but the songs - specifically the introduction - seem to be more boring than anything else. Once songs like "Kingdom" get going, however, get ready for one he ll of a weepy ride. Moving on to 'The Crestfallen', there is not much to say; the E.P. is probably the best thing Anathema did while in their more death metal phase. Absolutely intriquing, a without the problems that I had with 'Pentacost III'. Both of these albums are worth your time if you are a fan of the genre; but if you like the genre, I sure you already on these brilliant pieces of art.
