Customer Reviews:
The perfect rock singer!.......2007-06-29
I love all records of David Coverdale, this is the second after he Join a group called Whitesnake, this cd is not a classical hard rock album, if you want an album like burn or ready and willing, this is not the cd for you!
Little Heard But Excellent .......2006-08-17
I've loved this album since I first heard it some 20 years ago. Coverdale's voice never sounded better than on this album -- if all you've ever heard of him is from Whitesnake's metal days, this will surprise you. But then again if you're only into Whitesnake's metal days, you probably won't like this album. It's more indicative of earlier, bluesy Whitesnake but - for my money - better than anything they did. Great stuff.
Coverdale's second and best solo release of the seventies.......2005-08-08
Northwinds (1977.) David Coverdale's second album.
INTRODUCTION:
1976 was the year that saw the disbanding of one of the greatest hard rock bands in the world, the classic Deep Purple. Every member of the band went off in a separate direction. Tommy Bolin, Ritchie Blackmore's guitar replacement who only lasted for a single album, died shortly after the breakup due to his drug overdose. On the other hand, David Coverdale, the young man who had become Ian Gillan's replacement at age twenty-one, decided to try his hand at making a solo album. Producing his debut solo effort would be none other than Roger Glover, a fellow former Deep Purple member (although Coverdale and bassist Glover never played together in Purple.) Although Glover's days in Deep Purple were at an end, he was now pursuing his other interest of producing artists. Before 1976 was over, the White Snake album was complete (Whitesnake would later become the name of a Coverdale-fronted power rock supergroup.) Following the release of that album in early 1977, Coverdale released his second solo album, Northwinds. Neither album gained any real popularity. But is the latter still a good album? Read on if you want to find out!
OVERVIEW/REVIEW:
David Coverdale's solo albums are pretty much unknown, which is a shame, since the two of them are very good. They are really NOTHING like the Deep Purple or Whitesnake (the band) that Coverdale fans know and love, but their uniqueness is one of their greatest strength. Northwinds demonstrates this beautifully. Fusing his classic Deep Purple rock sound with elements of blues, pop rock, and even funk, he creates one of the most unique-sounding albums he has ever played on. It's a tough sound to describe, and one that's really hard to put into words. This album is an improvement over the first Coverdale solo album, with songs that feature more energy and creativity than the songs on that album. Coverdale's voice sounds just as fresh as it did on the Deep Purple albums that came before. And although the album that preceeded this one was called White Snake, this solo material really sounds NOTHING like the band David Coverdale would later front that would feature that name. Most fans of his go straight from the Deep Purple albums to the Whitesnake band albums, and bypass these forgotten gems. If you're a fan of his, make sure you don't make the mistake so many of your peers have made! Hard rock, blues rock, pop rock, and even the occasional funk elements meet in perfect harmony on the Northwinds album. Dave doesn't fail to please his fans here. Between the two Coverdale solo albums from 1977, I have to give the nod to Northwinds.
EDITION NOTES:
This album has been out of print for years, but it was recently reissued and made more readily available. The new issue features expanded liner notes, plus some rare bonus tracks. There is also an import version of the album that combines this album and its follow-up, Northwinds. If you can find the twofer for a good price, it's the version I recommend. Otherwise, the onefer reissues with the bonus tracks will work out fine. Either version might be kind of tough to find, though.
OVERALL:
Deep Purple is wildly popular and damn good. Whitesnake is wildly popular and damn good. David Coverdale's solo work is damn good, but practically unknown!? Why!? This is one of Dave's finest works, too. If you're a fan of his, and you want to see a relatively unknown and unique side to him that is often overlooked, don't hesitate to check out his long-forgotten solo albums. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with them.
Honesty, Integrity and BULLET PROOF!!!.......2005-06-19
Northwinds is probably THE most profound recording of DC's career. Funky, rocking, blusey, and introspective. Every song is incredible. The song styles vary, he's all over the place and he pulls it off! The 2 bonus tracks are worth the price alone as one reviewer stated...this is essential Coverdale...not the tacky dumbed down hair metal clown he became in '87 (and may still be today). If you're a fan of the solo works of Tommy Bolin and Glen Hughes, Rainbow (Dio years) and DC's Deep Purple through '84 Whitesnake this will blow you away. Definitely a recommended cd.
Beware Rdc54..........2003-10-28
I ordered this CD because David Coverdale has a wonderful voice and writes good, straight ahead Rock tunes. I was, unfortunately ripped-off by this Rdc54 guy...as were many others. People who try to sell with no E-mail available should be stopped by Amazon.com!!! Buy the Cd, but not from that turkey!!

Customer Reviews:
Not just a screamer.......2004-05-28
David's first two CD's after the split of Deep Purple show a much more versatile singer than many would have guessed. With songwriting partner Mickey Moody and a host of session mainstays David recorded two albums worth of R&B based pop that he can well be proud of. Both albums sound like they were fun to make and a relaxed atmostphere drifts from the speakers. No heavy metal here just good times and good tunes. Mr Coverdale would do well to look to this time for direction now the metal bubble has burst.
