Nine Inch Nails' sixth studio release, Year Zero takes the concept album further than it may have ever gone before. In advance of its release, URLs were hidden in tour t-shirts, music- and image-filled USB drives were 'found' at concerts, and dozens of websites have been packed with conspiracy stories that all involve the year 2022 or 'Year Zero.' Each clue is part of a cohesive whole, requiring a listener to follow an exhaustive web trail to grasp the entire tale. Focusing specifically on the music, "The Beginning of the End," the powerful first vocal track, is like the sonic and lyrical equivalent of an emotional ascension to a rollercoaster's peak, with the last few cacophonic seconds equaling the fall of individual freedoms. "Survivalism," Year Zero's first single, follows with guest vocalist/Slam artist Saul Williams pumping up the passion in its urgent chorus. While still industrial in genre, it's clear that Trent Reznor's musical evolution finds him bringing more mellow songs to the mix than he has on previous discs ("The Good Soldier," "The Greater Good," "In This Twilight") as well as an increased number of funk-affected rhythms, specifically in standout tracks "Capitol G" and "Me, I'm Not." Devotees of NIN's harder sound will appreciate the metallic crunch of "My Violent Heart" and "Meet Your Master." On the whole, the Nine Inch Nails we hear on Year Zero is less focused on producing heavy music and more focused on delivering its heavy, conspiratorial doomsday message. --Denise Sheppard

5 out of 5 stars High energy music with powerful lyrics.......2007-08-01

This superb collection of noisy music from NIN really makes your body move while making you think about how government and religion abuse power. Reznor's well crafted lyrics really captures the spirit of the United States today, even though his album claims to be about a time a decade or more in the future. As usual, he pulls no punches when characterizing the attitudes of both presidents and prelates. This disc should be required listening for anyone elected to public office.

If you like NIN, you'll love this new release.

5 out of 5 stars NIN legacy continues.......2007-08-01

A nice new album from NIN. Kind of a mix between old and new. It has definetely a different beat to it...but the classic Trent Reznor lyrics and vocals. Some say that NIN has lost it...I say they just adapt and overcome. They always come out with something that's different than the crap that's already out there now...and they haven't conformed to mainstream junk. If you're a NIN fan, atleast buy it and give it a shot. For me, for just about every NIN album, it took me a couple listening's to start to dig it. At first it's kind of like...what the heck...and once you absorb it all in...it's pretty tight.

2 out of 5 stars ARE YOU PEOPLE DEAF???.......2007-07-31

THIS IS HORRIBLE!
Remain calm please. I've been a big NIN fan from way back.
This album just proves to me that Trent has lost his spark. Yes, I love a concept album as much as the next guy. But what do you do when every album you release has pretty much THE SAME CONCEPT EVERY TIME!
We all deal with the same fears and concerns that mr. reznor brings up every album. Yes we all feel alienated often, we all feel depressed often, we feel angry often. Is he breaking any new ground lyrically? NO! Has he broken any new ground since The Fragile? NO! I think he has regressed. I believe "With teeth" was a ghastly album. I believe this album is very much a BORING album.
When trent released the song "The perfect drug" I was under the impression that the sky was the limit! I was SO excited about hearing the journey I thought he was going to undertake. On a technical note Trent was a master of innovation in the mid 90's with his GROUNDBREAKING work with the Pro Tools recording system. Some of the layering and effects on "The Fragile" are mind blowing. That's all gone now. "Year zero" is FLAT! Trents so called angst and aggression almost sounds like satire now. Perhaps I'm jaded, but when I listen to his earlier works especially "The fragile" it seems very intense, and urgent, and REAL!
Maybe he realised the limitations of the sound he had a hand in creating. Maybe he just feels that it's asking too much to push the boundaries these days. This is a similar feeling to how I'm feeling about the new Smashing Pumpkins album. Not moved, not excited, not challenged. Nice cover artwork though. That's where my two stars are going.

5 out of 5 stars The soundtrack for the US in our times. .......2007-07-27

I'll be brief. Every time I listen to this album is like revisiting the dark side of the US (and the world) in our times: pseudo-religious fascism, jingoism, savage capitalism, the need to belong to something (even if odious). I could go on. Mr. Reznor has given us another masterpiece, full of poignantly insightful lyrics and music that is at the same time beautiful and powerful enough to blast your brain to pieces. I love it.

2 out of 5 stars The song on the radio is IT.......2007-07-25

The only good thing about this CD is the song they play on the radio. Too bad, really.

Album Description

Four years since his last studio album, and following up on his highest charting radio single ever ("Personal Jesus", from Lest We Forget), Marilyn Manson returns with "Eat Me, Drink me". Art openings, soundtrack appearances, and personal circumstance have grabbed headlines for Manson in recent months, setting the stage for the release of Eat Me, Drink Me, which is unquestionably the artist's most personal statement yet. Always the provocateur, in what may be the ultimate subversion of the code of aggro-rock, the songs are immediately catchy - all jagged guitar hooks, anthemic choruses, with an overlying glam-rock sheen. Lyrically Manson has never been more riveting, seemingly having enough to draw from in his own life and from society at large to present a fresh, snarling vision.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2007-08-02

i love every song on here. the guitar work is amazing. its lyrically brutal and the man just knows how to write killer songs

3 out of 5 stars Not the Best, Not the Worst.......2007-08-02

I was a little disappointed by this CD. After all the hype from Manson himself proclaiming this was the great gothic vampire album and all, that's what I expected it to be. But it's not terribly gothic (most of his work isn't), and other than "If I Was Your Vampire" it isn't overly vampiric. Manson comes off sounding either bitter or commonly sleazy most of the time. In an untypical Manson move, he's said openly that "Mutilation Is the Most Sincere Form of Flattery" is aimed at My Chemical Romance, which helps make this feel like a personal "F*** You" album.

On "Are You the Rabbit" and "Eat Me, Drink Me," Manson breaks away somewhat from the air of griping and enters a more exploratory style; it's too bad we don't get to see him continue that exploration through the rest of the album. But even the bad songs stay in your head, especially the loose-stitched "Heart-Shaped Glasses." At least this CD proves that Manson hasn't fallen prey to stagnation; he's still very much in the process of evolving.

5 out of 5 stars Even the God of !@#$ can bleed........2007-08-01

I've been a Manson fan since way back in the Antichrist Superstar days. I really came to appreciate him when he followed up that album with Mechanical Animals. Rather than make Antichrist Superstar 2, he went in a completely different direction. Manson is essentially an artist who plays whatever he wants, and that is why I like him.

People whine that this album is "slow" as if Manson never has made slow depressing songs and was always a thrash metal band. I hear a lot of complaints from people who simply want Manson to be some anti right-wing anti religious for their sole amusement as if he is some monkey who should dance for their change.

Yeah, because rock n' roll is all about conforming to people's standards.

Manson was suicidal, got a divorce, was basically broken and bleeding. To fix his wounds he plugged an amp and a microphone into his scars and made one of the most interesting albums he's ever made. It's raw, it's experimental, it's depressing. Some people will hate this, their loss.

I was pretty disappointed with Golden Age of Grotesque (it was catchy but hollow) so my expectations were lowered. This album for me pretty much kicked my head in. It's the most emotionally haunting album since Mechanical Animals and he sounds even more vindictive and pissed off than he did with Holywood. Kudos to Tim Skold for creating such good guitar work which causes me to involuntarily air-guitar while listening to it.

Is it my favorite album of his? I would put Mechanical Animals and Holywood higher than this, they were a bit more cohesive thematically. This album isn't one where you can just pop it in any old time, but this is the album you can pop in when you are pissed off or depressed and love the hell out of it.

So in the end I am one of the Manson fans who actually gave this album a damn chance and liked it a lot. Manson has come back to school all these radio friendly manufactured-depression emo-screamo bands that whine about how "high school is oh so hard" what real down-and-dirty raw depressed experimental rock n' roll is all about.

5 out of 5 stars Good album, ignore the idiots on here.......2007-08-01

Ok true it's his worst but that's not bad cause all of his other albums are amazing, this one is disappointing yes but still a damn good rock album worth buying. It got better the more I heard it. I wish he would get back with either Twiggy or John 5 but anything Manson will probably always be good, rock on Manson ignore these idiots who whine EVERY time any band changes.

1 out of 5 stars l love Manson, but this disappoints.......2007-07-26

Listen............I love Manson's decadent, hedonistic, sometimes brutal music. But this.....disappoints. It's very understated, slow moving and has no Kick. No Punch. I will always support his output and listen to his material, but after many, many listenings, this album still bores me and makes me change the selection. Enough said. If u don't have any Manson, buy: "The Golden Age of Grotesque." Now THAT'S a Marilyn Manson tour-de-force!

On its fifth album, Static X mines its familiar Prong-meets-Ministry sound to convincing effect over the course of twelve tracks of industrial metal darkness. Because the band's name alone makes comparisons to the likes of White Zombie, Korn, and Slipknot redundant, it's instead worth noting that Cannibal is arguably the group's leanest, most direct-sounding, and most metal album to date. And, if this album is a harbinger of the outfit's future ventures, then listeners are in for a eye-popping ride. Wayne Static and his cohorts are perhaps most effective on the stomping "Cuts You Up," the dark and discoesque "Behemoth," and the grand executioner of them all, "Destroyer." Still, the record suffers a bit for its intentions of brutality. The hit-and-run approach of Static's songwriting means that none of the tracks reach the four-minute mark and thus come off as vignettes rather than fully realized narratives. All in all, Cannibal may be the album that detractors and fans alike have been waiting for, the one that proves that Static means to take us on a longer and more interesting journey than we could have ever imagined. --Jedd Beaudoin

Album Description

Static-X's blunt-force-trauma melding of industrial rock, thrash metal and futuristic disco is back on the band's fifth studio album, Cannibal. From the carnivorous title track to the throat-punching grooves of "Destroyer," "Goat" and "Electric Pulse," Cannibal boasts the harshest, most stripped-down music Static-X has ever recorded.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Static Fun.......2007-07-13

This is some nice evil disco here. Guitar Solo's and even some double bass give this Static Album more balls than their other albums. Its nice to see static playing this kind of music. Favorite songs are cannibal, no submission, chemical logic, chromo matic, cuts you up, and destroyer.

4 out of 5 stars Not their best..........2007-06-27

Though Static X is one of my favorite bands, I feel like this album is not as musically inventive and solid as the last two have been (particularly Shadow Zone). Still a great album!

5 out of 5 stars Another great album by Static-X.......2007-06-13

Static-X has revamped their sound more times than I honestly care to count, but I can say with all honesty that I've loved everyone of their albums. As most will say none have quite broken the barrier like Wisconson Death Trip, but you can't always compare things so heavily. Each album has had wonderful sounds to it and all in all Static-X is a great band and never a bad choice to buy. If you're the kinda person who can't stand change in a band and was deviasted when bands chance their sound then this is simply not the band for you, but if you have an open mind and enjoy sounds you can simply just rock out to then you wont find a better group to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Their greatest album yet - The rest of you wimps can go to heaven.......2007-06-07

All those reviews that have less than 5 stars are those who give up easily, can't listen to a song the second time. All it takes is some faith and a second or probably third listen and you'll all get hooked.

Wayne Static has always kept his consistency in keeping most of his songs to less than 3 minutes. It not only helps him focus on giving us the tightest music but gives us fans a treat, rather than listen to a 10 minute drab.

There are some obvious classics in this album - Cannibal, No Submission (my personal favourite), Chroma-matic and Behemoth (One of the greatest first 15 seconds I've listened to).

Static-X has given its heart and soul and gone all out in this album touching thrash and heavy metal.

Reptile, 40 ways, Electric Pulse etc. are songs that you will need to listen to a second time, probably a third for hard to convince people like me, but trust me you will get hooked I guarantee it!

And for all those reviewers who have given it 1,2 or 3 stars go back to your ipod and listen to it again and lets see if it changes your mind!

5 out of 5 stars Best Album of the YEAR!!!.......2007-05-21

Alpha, the latest outing from this veteran act is both good and maddening. Good because many of the riffs and the songs to which they are affixed are driven by an element of boogie--for lack of a better term--too often absent from contemporary metal. Maddening because the group often cops out and trades in original and challenging ideas for the expected mid-song freak outs that will no doubt send listeners over the brink once the band takes the stage but do little but inspire passive listening in the current setting. As good as Sevendust may be on the stage, this is the studio and they owe it to listeners to create an experience that will last them a lifetime. A few more risks and less of an allegiance to brute force may serve this band well as it does in the more subtle moments of "Deathstar" and "Driven." --Jedd Beaudoin

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars another solid cd from sevendust.......2007-06-06

this is sevendust's 6th album and its a great one. it might be tied with animosity for the best cd. i like almost every song except story of your life. suffer, confessions of hatred, alpha and burn are my favorite tracks. the only problem i have with this cd is that morgan screams on every song and that gets real annoying. besides that great album guys. just try to scream less and use more melody which is what your best at.

5 out of 5 stars Kick Ass.......2007-05-14

I've been a Sevendust fan for years, and I admit that their music takes a little while to get used, from screaming to melodic choruses. anyway, this last album had a lot of really tasty double bass and the band sounds as tight as ever. Killer guitar licks and I think this is their best album yet, hands down. the album really rips.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Sevendust...........2007-05-13

When Lajon said in a interview awhile back that the new songs they were writing were some of the hardest stuff that they have ever written, songs that make "Enemy" sound mellow. He wasn't kidding. If your a old school Sevendust fan, then this album is your album to end all Sevendust albums. This is a return to form of the in your face, rip your through your skull Sevendust. From begining to end this album doesn't give up, its relentless, lyrically and musically. This is quite possibly the hardest, most in your face album since they released "Sevendust" back in 1997. I've been a fan of Sevendust since 1999 when the released "Home", and I've eagerly awaited every album since. Every album they have made is very good, and Alpha is not an exception.

Bottom Line: Alpha is just another great album from Sevendust. If you thought they got soft, they are back, and they are back to rip through your skull, and believe me, thats a good thing.

3 out of 5 stars Juvenile.......2007-05-13

I suppose that over the years it can be said that Sevendust have been hit or miss, album-wise. They have the ability to write outstanding melody and crushing heavy hitters (i.e. Angel's Son and Black, respectively), but each album seems to find Sevendust attempting to find their place over again. It isn't the reinvention that I dislike as much as the lack of PROGRESSIVE direction with the "Sevendust style" as they continue to move forward in their career.

Alpha is a manifestation of the group's attempt at a return to an earlier era, as well as an attempt to harness a more brutal, less-polished sound, but it lacks conviction to me. The lyrics are weak in the sense that they attempt to express angst that sounds as though the words were composed by a 12-year-old. For example: Confessions of Hatred: "Responsible for bringing out my darkest side/I tried to hide what I feel but it's my time/
To inflict all the damage". If I were a fan of Hatebreed and their adolescent approach to angst, then maybe lyrics like these would trigger that itch that makes one want to break windows as a kid, but I am not, and they don't. The words seems empty and the rest of the lyrics in the song are a collection of rambling thought. That goes for much of the rest of the album.

The underlying music sounds more like a giant experiment instead of a composed effort. The guitar pieces are boring, even confusing, and I listen to Mudvayne, who constantly play in strange time signatures. However, most of the riffs on this album seem forced, and though I can admire a lack of flow (though, no one beats Tool for being able to play odd time signatures and create a groove), it needs to be able to flow well. By the end of the album, all the chunky parts began to run together and sound like they were cut from the same riff in the song before it.

However, it isn't a total flop, in my opinion. "Driven", "Deathstar",
"Alpha", "Story of Your Life" and (in spite of it's name) "Aggression" are all listenable tracks, in spite of my reservations on some of their lyrics and direction. Overall though, this album is weaker than most of the albums that have come before it.

I hope these guys find their direction again, complete with stronger lyrics, melody and composition. Next, Animosity, and Sevendust were all good albums, and I hope that they find that same energy in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Sevendust Rule and I wish I was in the band!!!!.......2007-05-13

From the first song to the last one this album rocks. In a world where most bands change their style of music to more main stream crap, Sevendust have stayed true to their fans. Alpha is just awesome! The songs are fast, aggressive and heavy and I love the double kick on all the songs. LJ's vocals rule. If you are a fan of Sevendust, you will absolutly dig this album. If you feel let down by your current favourite bands, get this album and become a fan of Sevendust. I cant stop listening to this album, it rocks! Buy it!!!!!!

Culled from the band's ten year, six album career, Lest we Forget: The Best of Marilyn Manson features some of the greatest rock anthems of the last decade. Opening with "The Love Song" from Holy Wood, it proceeds to the first of a handful of cover songs which have made it as singles. The decadent, beefed up version of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" may not vary much from the original but the band do it the appropriate Goth justice; "Tainted Love" adds a menacing, industrial-glam to the electric northern soul of Soft Cell's version; and the one that broke them into the UK mainstream, "Sweet Dreams" by the Eurythmics sounds as good as ever. So, they do a good cover but it's really the fists in the air crowd-pleasing anthems that back up the band's iconic imagery. The high-energy signature tune, "Beautiful People" and tracks like "Disposable Teens" or "The Fight Song" typify the band's intelligent approach to rock'n'roll posturing. While many may have all the albums already, Lest We Forget is the perfect addition for anyone who likes the odd song but was too fearful to delve any further in the world of Marilyn Manson. --Georgina Collins

Trent Reznor has always been a one-trick-pony, but it's a damn good trick: sunny melodies filtered through ferocious electronics. Unfortunately, the trick's impact was often watered down by a tendency toward petulance and self-absorption. Still, almost six years after NIN's last release, The Fragile, the trick itself has lost none of its Teen-Beat-from-hell appeal. With Teeth blisters from the start with "All the Love in the World," and tracks like "The Collector" take full advantage of Dave Grohl's sledgehammer drumming. Reznor stretches occasionally, trying out different tactics, from crunchy, overtly commercial rave-ups ("The Hand That Feeds") to borderline New Wave ("Only"). But Teeth isn't about stretching. It's about doing the same trick, only better, with less clutter and more bite. By neatly distilling the sparseness of Pretty Hate Machine with Downward Sprial-style density, it ends up being the most focused record in the NIN catalog. -Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Listen to the Music as Well as the Lyrics. Great Album........2007-06-28

I waited a long time to write this review for a reason. I wanted to see, because there are so many haters of this album out there, how it stood up to The Fragile, the album prior to it's release, and Year Zero, the album which came out afterwards. It is comparable to both, with The Fragile and Year Zero being my favorite NIN albums of all. I see all these people writing and saying how terrible this album is, that Trent just put something out to sell records because he hadn't put an album out in a long time. That's bush!! The music on this album is awesome. It's as textured at times as The Downward Spiral or The Fragile, or even Year Zero, and at other times as heavy as Broken. Plus the live drumming that Dave Grohl provides on most of the tracks is excellent. And the lyrics are pretty good if you listen to them. Sure, Trent deals with coping with love, anger ,being lonely, and heartache. This is obvious on tracks "All the Love in the World, "Love is not Enough", "Only", and "Sunspots". He also is leading to the political precursor of Year Zero with tracks like "The Hand that Feeds", and "Right Where it Belongs". This is just a message to all of the haters out there that Trent was writing about the things he knew about and the things that were important to him. And if anyone thinks that the music itself is bad, have your hearing tested. Keep up the great work Trent.

1 out of 5 stars Tree Trunk Arms and Cereal Box Philosophy.......2007-06-25

Have mercy!! Please Mr. Reznor stop making these terrible albums before you destroy your legacy. These lyrics sound like they were penned by a fifteen year old kid that just smoked his first doobie. You used to stand for something....what happened? Mr.Reznor who gave you the philosophy 101 textbook? What's coming next the "Question Reality" tour. Anyways, I'm sure all the little kids you're stealing money from are quite impressed by your lame ramblings............................Don't forget your 5 o'clock workout you muscleman

5 out of 5 stars I can't help it........2007-06-24

I realize that there are more than a few people who consider this to be NIN's weakest album, but speaking for myself, I like everything Trent Reznor touches, including his other music projects. I love this album, and I am a huge NIN fan so I suppose that doesn't qaulify my rating as fair. Oh well, just had to give my imput.

4 out of 5 stars A solid 4 stars for NIN.......2007-04-27

With teeth is agood nin cd. Right where it belongs The line begains to blur Sunspots Every day is exactly the same and Love is not enough. are good solid songs Hand that feeds is not juvenile and is a great commetary on the war. what i dont like are Only and Getting smaller i dont like the attitude of Only or the My Shrona riff for getting smaller. With teeth is mostly solid and underrated.

4 out of 5 stars A hitfilled adventure.......2007-04-24

This album was a comeback of sorts. After the amazing, yet poor selling The Fragile, Trent needed a hit. Much like the Velvet Underground did with Loaded, he churned out a lean mean album, chock full of hits. Unfortunately, by doing so, he lost the depth and intelligence of previous albums. While I've listened to this a ton, it's usually more for the singles than for the entire album. As such, your opinion of the album depends on the type of music goer you may be. While some perfer the entire album effect, others are in it solely for the singes. This album is for those who like catchy songs, surrounded by industrial music.

Six albums into its career, Godsmack finds itself faced with the challenge of moving forward without betraying its roots. Although the veteran act manages to offer up a handful of convincing tunes on this hour-long affair, IV fails to hang together as a cohesive and convincing album. The opening "Living In Sin" and its follow-up "Speak" rock with conviction although neither breaks new ground; "The Enemy"--a reasonably good approximation of a latter-day Metallica tune--proves persuasive while "Shine Down" and "No Rest For The Wicked" are radio-ready distractions. As good as those and a number of the other songs are IV never locks into any particular groove and ultimately amounts to little more than a batch of songs placed end-to-end on a disc that's roughly 20 minutes too long. By the record's final moments--the passionate but decidedly dated angst-filled dirge "Mama," the meandering "One Rainy Day"--the listener grows weary of treading down an all-too-familiar path with a band that still has a promising future if only it could let go of its unyielding grip on its own past.--Jedd Beaudoin

4 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!.......2007-06-27

I've enjoyed everthing Godsamck has put out. Although my favorite is the self titled CD (Godsmack), IV still holds its own.

4 out of 5 stars SMACKDOWN.......2007-06-18

Maybe becasue I'm 52, but damn I enjoy this CD! And maybe becasue I'm an "old timer" I really enjoy the melodies of HOLLOW and MAMA, these are infectious push repeat again and again type of songs.

The enjoyment of a rock and roll song is not always in the flashy guitars or head banging sond, it is from a feel a song gives you a mood it can out you in, a palce it can take you.

And I have no problem rolling down the highway, and turning this CD up full blast. A good effort, maybe dissapoints its early fans, but will make up for it with the new ones it will bring in. And its smackdown enough, to keep away most of the old dudes.

Sometimes some of the harsh sound and bleeting guitars need to betoned down just a tad, to let the soul of the group let loose.

4 out of 5 stars Their CD kicks rock!.......2007-05-31

Favorite song is Living in Sin. Their cd is overall ok but could be better like their Faceless album was.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Modern Rock With Great Vocals.......2007-05-15

I have never been a huge fan of Godsmack (I wonder if they have to pay royalties to Alice In Chains for that....), but I have always liked the singer Scully's voice, and seem to always wish I had some of their discs around....the guitarist also plays some pretty cool riffs, and has a great, thick tone that I like. Having owned no previous Godsmack albums, I picked up their latest and liked it even more than I thought I would.

A good modern rock/metal album with a nice flow and some variety all the way through, with especially standout vocals and some interesting experimental textures and guitar...I also like the sequel to their breakout hit from '98 "Voodoo Too". Pretty cool stuff, really. I listen to way too much prog metal, and sometimes this sort of thing is just what I want to hear. Cool stuff, check it out.

1 out of 5 stars What The Hell Happened.......2007-04-16

What the hell happened to these guys, not that they had much to offer in the past but damn, this is the apitamy of falling off. This band sucks just more so then they ever did. When your a big name band in the past then you come to play the Charleston Municipal Auditorium, you have really hit rock bottom!!. You can bet I will not be attending, and i cant imagine many others attending either!

Give it up Godsmack your not with the times anymore, your horrible

Amazon.com's Best of 1999

Trent Reznor took five years to record this monstrous double-CD set, wielding a perfectionist's touch in the production and the subtlety of a chainsaw in the musicianship. The result is uncompromising, full of hysterical noise and yet utterly accessible. Somehow, someway, this is one of the best pop records of the year. --Matthew Cooke

Amazon.com

The Fragile is even bleaker than 1994's The Downward Spiral as it lurches along with a perpetual scowl. A frenzied collection of buzz-saw pop, Trent Reznor's grim opus yo-yos through two CDs with scattershot intensity. Hushed one minute and explosive the next, spite and anger intermix with heartbreaking resignation, sometimes in the course of one song. Still, Reznor's dour and uncompromising approach is accessible and undeniably entertaining, even when he eschews vocals altogether. Unchanged are the obsessive lengths that he goes to for the sake of a dynamic thrill ride. The quiet tones that open the instrumental "Just Like You Imagined" suddenly erupt into a barrage of off-time rhythms and noodling keyboard riffs, all rising to a torrid conclusion. The sheer sonic invention on display here is astounding. Reznor's production approaches Brian Eno's in terms of dynamism, though it arises from a profoundly different sensibility. "Starfuckers Inc" uses chopped-up vocals for the verses and a shouting mob for its propulsive, Ministryesque chorus to mercilessly slam some of NIN's imitators (most pointedly, Marilyn Manson). And while there's nothing here as dance-floor-ready as Downward Spiral's "Closer," "Where Is Everybody" comes close, thanks to its slow, sweaty gyrations and Adrian Belew's slippery guitar figures. The Fragile's songs are ultimately simple explorations of deep disillusionment. However, once Reznor finishes twisting them out of shape, they're towering soundscapes of rage that are at once terrifying and beautiful. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Sweet and sour, but the sweet is sooo sweet.......2007-06-02

Off hand, you'd think that 2 cd's is a whole lot of music to listen to. On the other hand, that WOULD be true had this album have roughly 1/2 of it as "skippable" tracks. Don't be disuaded however, this album is still chock full of some of the greatest music I've ever heard. Point blank, this album is musical genius hidden within a number of useless artsy noise. Despite the throwaway tracks, this album is really great. I recommend it entirely, you can skip to the good ones.

1 out of 5 stars Career suicide.......2007-04-07

Eight long years after this album was released and I figure I might as well write a review. I know what people say, that, it wasn't the Downward Spiral 2. Well, I was hoping for something equally as impressive as the Downward Spiral, not the same. I realize bands move on, grow up, GET OLD, but, such a contrast. The Downward Spiral, and previous works, were a progressive movement towards something.. something. The Fragile may have been that something. The world will never know.

I wonder...who will hold the chalice next? Blame it on fear, blame it on drugs, blame it on pressure, blame it on ....whatever, but, this album is the ultimate opportunity lost. Successive works, such as "With Teeth", are just flat out laughable and pathetic. Was Nine Inch Nails ever a great band? I have my doubts... yet, I can still remember being dumbstruck by the glory of Mr. Self Destruct that first time... [8th grade]

As far as I'm concerned, this album was Trent's fall from Godhood. This album has no purpose, no progression. It's a mess of half committed tracks and trivial ambience. There is no plot, no experience. While Downward Spiral was a journey to something divine, this album, however, lacks any magic whatsoever...

Oh, NiN will still be around, perhaps for ten more years, perhaps even twenty. But, that spirit, that anger, that POWER which is found in the Downward Spiral (and Broken) will never show itself again. The sincerity is but a fading memory, and to those just discovering NiN, will never be felt.

All in all, I would rather have never been born than live in a post Fragile world. It was that disapointing to me, and still is. One star for destroying one of the only joys of my childhood.

5 out of 5 stars Music for the dark corners of your soul.......2007-04-06

Trent and co. will wring melody from your mute cacophony. He will make grossly audible your simmering anguish. From your gut-wrenching agony he will rend headphones and speakers and piss off happy yippy-dogged minivanned neighbors. He will take the destroyed junkyard of your soul and from it fashion a japanese mecha-godzilla that no army can slay. And finally, after the journey through your private darkness is complete, he will bow his head and point you at the glimmer of light at the end.

Welcome to NIN. I love all his stuff, but this is his best, darkest, deepest, most musically interesting. If you ever find yourself in a very dark place, catharsis is at hand. This is the hair tonic for your balding soul. Best played loud.

5 out of 5 stars If I could give it more than five, I would.......2007-03-28

It boggles my mind that this album didn't sell better when it came out. It totally lives up to the hype of The Downward Spiral, and is nothing short of epic. I'll try not to sound to cliche here, but this album really changed my musical life. In my opinion, it is easily one of the top ten best musical artworks of the nineties. The songs are amazing, the instrumentals beautiful, the rock is hard and danceable, and it is every bit as risque and meticulously constructed as TDS. I would give you a "list" of standout songs to keep an eye on, but I would end up naming every song on both discs. Every one is a winner here, you will find beauty and pure musical genius on each track. If you liked The Downward Spiral, put The Fragile to the test, it is every bit as good if not better. I don't know what you are waiting for, buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Not Typical.......2007-03-13

If you like NIN just from hearing "The Downward Spiral" then you will either be refreshed or dissapointed. I've owned this album since the first day it was released (almost 8 years) and I still listen to it from time to time.

If you're looking for the song played during the "300" trailer, the track name is "Just Like You Imagined", one of the best instumentals ever.

Like all of NIN's albums, this is a modern classic.

Amazon.com essential recording

Nine Inch Nails are a pretty amazing phenomenon when one considers what they--um, he--have done with just a few studio recordings. The Downward Spiral, NIN's second full-length album, is just as packed with vitriol as Pretty Hate Machine and the EP Broken--and has just as solid a base of pop hooks that go a long way toward explaining NIN's popularity. Most recognizable is the down-tempo single "Closer," which remains a staple of dance clubs everywhere. But for the most part, the album is all heavy beats and aggressive guitars--industrial music with a pop angle. That winning combination is what makes Trent Reznor a law unto himself, becoming insanely popular while the main body of industrial music retains its subculture status. --Genevieve Williams

Amazon.com

It's easy to understand why Nine Inch Nails became the industrial band to break out of the techno ghetto and win a larger audience. Trent Reznor, who records the NIN albums almost entirely by himself (although he tours with a full band), tries very hard to pass himself off as an angry young man, but underneath the angst-ridden lyrics, pounding synths, and grating guitars is an irrepressible pop sensibility. On the second full-length NIN album, The Downward Spiral, Reznor builds his constructions of noise and gloom around warm, fuzzy melodies. On the album's first single, "March of the Pigs," for example, Reznor screams about swine lined up for slaughter amid guitars screeching in pain. Suddenly the guitars fall away to reveal the sensually throbbing rhythm track below; then that falls away to reveal a vocal-and-piano track that's as catchy as anything by Elton John. Because Reznor has a better handle on dynamics now, the melodic core is more obvious than ever. --Geoffrey Himes

4 out of 5 stars great and quickly sent..........2007-07-31

love the cd---
and it came quickly...
It really, like always has the great balance of harsh songs and even mellow....

4 out of 5 stars Alot of Darkness--and Some Fun.......2007-07-15

The first time I listened to "The Downward Spiral", I was a bit sickened by the opening gun shots, realizing that Reznor was making a not-too-subtle reference to the so-called Tate murders, where the three male victims were shot, among other things. Time having blunted that effect, I've grown to appreciate not only his utilization of those disgusting crimes as a potent metaphor for his own perceived disintegration (note "Piggy" and the cacophonous "March of the Pigs"), but I've come to the conclusion that, while this work is a bit dark (and noisy) for my tastes, it's nevertheless quite an accomplishment. Unlike "Year Zero", it's never dull. Every song oozes with emotion, be it anger, contempt, desperation--whatever. Lyrically, it runs the gamut between good enough and wow, I wish I'd thought of that. It's technically brilliant--I can't conceive of how the electronic effects could have been rendered any more intriguing. It's obviously a labor of love, meticulously constructed by an obsessive (and perhaps perverted) mind. For all it's stellar qualities, "The Downward Spiral" is, alas, not for every mood, i.e., it has the unique ability to twist an already bad mood into an even worse one--at least that's my experience. Plenty of sunshine and a car ride is the way I take it best. Maybe that will work for you.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute must for NIN fans.......2007-06-27

If you're a fan of NIN and don't own this album, then you should really reconsider calling yourself a fan. This is a classic industrial album and one of their finest works ever.

5 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart........2007-06-07

TDS was Reznor's darkest and from what I think his best piece of work in his entire career (and also his most disturbing). If you are trying to get into Nine Inch Nails, I would recommend either With Teeth, Year Zero, or The Fragile, as they are cd's that are less dark than this. However, if you are into NIN, you should DEFINITELY pick up this cd.

My favorite songs: Mr. Self Destruct, Heresy, Closer, March of the Pigs, Ruiner, Eraser, Reptile, A Warm Place, and finally Hurt.

4 out of 5 stars NIN at it's almost best.......2007-05-16

Good work from Trent, but in my book many of the songs on this CD that are performed on the Beside You in Time Blu-ray are a better performance then the originals

Album Description

East German industrial titans follow up 2004's Reise Reise with this fifth studio album, whose title translates as "Rose Red". It consists of leftover material from the Reise Reise sessions which the band felt strong enough to merit a release in its own right. On this album they continue to broaden their palette with a track in Spanish and a duet with Texas's Sharleen Spiteri on "Stirb Nicht Vor Mir" ("Don't Die Before Me"). Includes the single "Benzin" ("Petrol").

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any Rammstein fan(or fan of great industrial/rock music)!.......2007-08-01

This album is a very solid showing for my favorite band, Rammstein. Though not as heavy as their previous work, I still find much enjoyment and pleasure in listening to this album as well. Every song on this CD is worthy of a listen, even some of the slower ones. Personnal favorites include Mann gegan Mann, Rosenrot, Stirb Nicht Vor Mir, Wo Bist Du, and Te Quiero Puta!(one of their songs NOT to be taken seriously). Some fans will argue that R+ is beggining to "sell out" with their somewhat "new sound". I see it as a step forward in their amazing career so far and can't wait to hear what their new album is going to be like whenever it is released in 2008(so I've heard).

There are still many "hard" songs on this album which will get the blood flowing(Mann gegan Mann, Benzin, Rosenrot, etc.), but I truly believe that it is their "ballads", so to speak, that have defined Rammstein and their sucess in the international rock industry. If you enjoy this album, be sure to pick up Rammstein's previous work, as you will not be disappointed.

Overall, not as "heavy" as previous releases, but even folks who are not big fans of R+ will appreciate the wide varity of musical listenings on their fifth studio album(not including their live albums). Pick this up if you are a fan of Rammstein or a fan of industrial/rock music. You will not be disappointed!(Also be sure to check out previous work from this band as all of their albums are worthy of a listening and/or purchase).

Personally, I like what Rammstein continues to put out, but I'm more than a little disappointed at how some of the songs on this CD turned out so...generic.

Don't get me wrong, I love this band, one of my favorites in fact. I just can't say I love most of the songs on this CD like I do on Sehnsucht, Mutter, or Reise Reise. I'm a fan of their older CD's; full of dark, heavy industrial metal, but not so much of this...I'd go as far as saying white noise on this CD. It reminds me of listening to the radio. Theres a few gems to be heard on the radio, but most is filler and consequently, white noise because it all sounds the same.

I did like a few on this CD though. Mann Gegen Mann, Rosenrot, Wo Bist Du, even Don't Die Before I Do, and to a lesser extent, Spring

5 out of 5 stars Definitely not "leftovers," more like dessert!.......2007-03-22

I bought this CD simply because it is a Rammstein CD and I LOVE Rammstein with every ounce of my being. I was a little surprised to see the Parental Advisory sticker on the cover, but I assume that's just because of the DVD. The lyrics can't possibly be offensive to those individuals who don't understand German. Anyway, upon first listen, I didn't hear anything remarkable. I shrugged and put Rosenrot away, trading it for my well-worn copy of Reise, Reise. I don't know when it was that I decided to put Rosenrot back in. Perhaps I had heard "Mein Teil" and "Moskau" a little too much. At any rate, I gave it another chance. I was not disappointed. The first stand-out track to me was "Hilf Mir" (Help Me). Absolutely amazing song. Next, I fell in love with "Wo Bist Du" (Where Are You?), "Spring" (Jump) and Zerstoren (Destroy. Yes, I know that I didn't use the O with the diaresis). The point is that there is SO MUCH here besides typical b-sides and filler. I love most every song on here. Yes, I dislike the one that everyone else does. Stirbt nicht vor mir isn't entirely unlikeable...if you can get past the lyrics. Being fluent in both German and English, I am unable to and it really kills what is an otherwise beautiful melody.

But, if you are reading this, you are a Rammstein fan and you are wondering if you should pick this up. I think so. Mann Gegen Mann (Man Against Man) is a song that some might find offensive if they translate the lyrics, but it is quite catchy. Benzin is okay, perhaps not the best choice to open up the disc. Have I missed any of the songs? Feuer und Wasser (Fire and Water) is another beautiful song. I suppose I'm not the best reviewer because I can't express just how much I love these songs. If I had to pick the best one on the CD, I would go with Wo Bist Du. If you don't speak German, translate the lyrics. It's not just another song about an unrequited love. It's quite haunting. I love it.

The bottom line here is that this CD shouldn't be overlooked or shunned just because these songs "weren't good enough to make it to Reise, Reise." There are some AMAZING tracks here and they deserved to be looked at on their own. There are solid songs, there are a couple (Stirbt nicht vor mir & Ein Lied) that aren't as strong. I don't think any true Rammstein fan would be disappointed with this album. There are loud songs, quieter songs, melodic songs, etc. It's a very good album and my digipak case is becoming quite worn out from multiple listenings. I highly recommend this album to fans of the band, and the genre in general.

4 out of 5 stars Leftovers plus more, these "B-sides" get an A+.......2007-02-12

Rammstein's "Rosenrot" has some leftover material (six tracks in all) from the studio sessions of the album "Reise Reise", which I honestly did not care for that much compared to prior Rammstein releases. On this album however, I felt that the band had recorded some deeper, more atmospheric tunes that tended to get away from the addictive beats and rhythms that I again, experienced on past albums. Rosenrot also includes five new tracks besides the Reise Reise "B-sides".

The songs on here are a good mix of the driving, crunching formula of stomping chants and powerful riffs that we know the band can deliver, but also have a good number of songs that escalate more into a progressive feel. The album starts off with a staunch assault called "Benzin" that has an epic, haunting background of darkness that is backed by forceful guitars. The title track has catchy sounding lyrics that although make little sense to this listener (I don't speak German well) still comes across with great, daunting tone. Another great track that reflects some great guitar work. "Wo Bist Du" is a choppy, crashing tune and has an elegant if not dire synth sound in the background during the chorus parts.

The track "Zerstoren" will excite any Rammstein fan, as it's a fast, frenzied thrashing tune that never lets up in intensity. Eleven tracks in all, "Ein Lied" rounds out the list and is one of my favorites. It starts off slow with a small guitar piece playing along and slowly seeps into a sweeping, harrowing song that is not brutal but stays Melodic and soulful, and is backed by some ghostly singing in the background that one might find in an old Vincent Price film.

I'm not a Rammstein fanatic, just a big fan. Although some scoffed "Rosenrot", its versatile combination of edgy laden metal and drifting, slower paced tracks make it a solid album.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome! Very recommended to any metal lover........2007-01-20

Well, I'll make it short. This cd is very good. Any Rammstein fan will love this but others who like metail genre in general will probably like it too. The assortment and sound of the sound in the album is quite nice. This album as well as Mutter and Sehnsucht are my favorites and if you like the albums I've mentioned you'll surely will enjoy this one too. Also, if you liked this you may want to check out Megaherz, Eisbrecher, Puhdys which are some of the other awesome German metal bands (you may have to get them from German Amazon though).

Anyway, good addition to any metal fan's cd collection!
