Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars loud instrumental/background music.......2007-02-14

The lyrics are sung slowly but the backround/instrumental music a bit too loud so it drowns the lyrics some of the time. The arrangements are also a bit more for adults--a bit too jazzy or intermittently loud for a child, when the enunciation of the lyrics should be the emphasis.

Would also be more appealing to a child if a child and NOT an adult would sing the songs...like the Wee Sing Mother Goose songs where every song is clearly sung by a child--this CDis what I would suggest instead. Even an adult will appreciate the pleasant-sounding arrangements of this particular Wee Sing CD....NOT so with the Time to Sing CD's

5 out of 5 stars A Great CD for Kids with Speech Disorders.......2005-08-09

These CD's were made specifically for children with apraxia and other speech disorders. I ordered "Time to Sing" and was very happy with it. I even enjoy listening to it.

I think "Time to Sing II" is even better because it's slower and the pronounciation is clearer. My 3 year old daughter, Zoe, and I really enjoy listening to and singing along with this CD. It has a jazzy sound that is appealing to both of us. It's also great for bedtime since the pleasant slow pace of the music is quite relaxing.

It is very important to have CD's like these for children with apraxia. Not often do we hear about "apraxia" but it can be a very frustrating condition for a child and others who try to discipher what the child is saying.

It's great fun for a speech disabled child to be able to learn to sing songs like other kids and it's especially valuable for their self-esteem. I highly recommend parents of a child with apraxia buy these CD's as part of their overall speech therapy program.

I will soon be buying the Christmas version of "Time to Sing".

5 out of 5 stars My son with apraxia loves this CD.......2004-08-08

This song is almost always in our car's cd player. My son who is 3 and has apraxia never sang before I purchased this CD. He loves the songs and the slower tempo allows him to sing along. He now is starting to sing along with his friends in class which he never had the confidence to do before. I would highly recommend this cd.

1 out of 5 stars Please turn it off!.......2004-04-23

My son has a speech disorder but he managed to say "Turn it off!". I guess it was helpful in that respect. The words are very choppy and unnatural sounding. I would not recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Most Excellent!!.......2007-05-03

As a longtime Weather Report fan, I of course had to get this. What is great is just how much I like it. Two longplaying discs of quite impressive renditions of WP played by excellent musicians lending their own bent and air.

My hesitation at first due to the fact that this is a tribute album were swept aside from the first song, this is some great stuff here!

After a good 9 or 10 months of listening to this, all I can say is that it is still in my top 3 discs to just throw on and enjoy.

The recording quality is very good. Excellent entertainment value IMO.

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic Aggregation of Musicians Exceeds Expectations.......2005-09-16

Is EVERY song on this collection great? No. But, some ARE great and most are well above average and nearly all of them capture the spirit and essence of the timeless sound of Weather Report. I have had these 2 CDs in my car for about 10 days and continue to be impressed by the quality of the music and irrepressible energy that went into this compilation. A song-by-song review is not necessary as there are too many to review. Buy and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars One of the great things about this disc . . . .......2005-08-26

. . . is that it introduces listeners to musicians and bands they'd be unlikely to encounter stateside. For example, who in the US has ever heard (of) the band White House? I know I hadn't before encountering them on this tribute disc, and I'm very glad to make their acquaintance. Featuring some of the best young improvisers on the new Dutch jazz scene, including Yuri Honing on soprano and tenor sax (I do have a duo disc with him and Misha Mengleberg--very nice), Michiel Bortslap on piano, Rhodes, and Korg M 1 (another player not unknown stateside), Boudewijn Lucas on bass, shekere, and loop programming, Joost Lijbaart on drums, and Bart Fermie, percussion and voice (these latter three probably almost unknown in the US), this band creates a very attractive vibe and soundscape, kinda like if Medicine Wheel and the Claudia Quintet met and kissed, with a dollop of Benoit Delbecq and Omar Sosa (!) thrown in. Their track "Bombay" is my favorite, and I'm thrilled to have heard their unique music. A smart stateside label, such as Palmetto, should snatch them up.

What we've got here is a compilation disc featuring an incredibly wide assemblage of musicians, most of whom, although likely unknown to listeners, have not only been influenced by Weather Report, but have gone on to create spectacular and unique music that ventures far beyond that of their mentors.

Take for example Acoustic Mania, a duo comprising Antonio Foricione on nylon string guitar (I have a couple of wonderful discs by him) and Neil Stacey on guitar synthesizer (a name new to me). They do a spectacular version of "Birdland." This English-based duo has played and toured with John McLaughlin, and Martin Taylor, and other guitar-based groups.

"Scarlet Woman," featuring guitar wizard Torsten de Winkle; Janek Gwizdala, electric bass and programming; Audan Waage, trumpet; and Scott Kinsey, keyboards, also shines. This group puts many US jazz fusion outfits to shame. Indeed, one of the most impressive things about this disc is its showcasing of a wide variety of European acts that desperately deserve a hearing in the US.

Other standouts include "White Woods" by Tony Grey featuring Romain Collin, keyboards; Walter Smith III, sax; David Fiuczynski, guitar (someone almost always worth hearing); and Kenwood Dennard, drums; "Overlook Hotel" by Slop Shop, a group founded by Peter Schwalm, a Brian Eno collaborator; Clive Stevens' "Beat 17," perhaps the finest track on the album, featuring Stevens on keyboards, sax, and WX7-Midi-Wind Controller; Lincoln Goines, bass; Frank Colon, percussion; and Steve Garbory, sound design. But there's not a bad track on the entire disc. It's clear the producer Ulrich Vormehr searched far and wide for the best of Weather Report's heirs, and the results he achieved are nothing short of spectacular.

I had rather serious doubts about this project, but listening to a few samples convinced me that this was a serious project, not just some warmed over thrown together rip-off trying to capitalize on the name and reputation of perhaps the greatest jazz/rock fusion band ever.

Entirely worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars I didnt think it was possible..........2006-02-22

for Tracy Nelson to get better. I remember hearing Down So Low when it first came out and was stunned. Until listening to this live recording, I didnt think it could be improved upon.. but I guess age and experience have given her the ability to make it even more mesmerizing. I bought the CD, got in my truck, drove off, put in the CD, and started to listen. I pulled off the road because I didnt think I should be driving.

As the other reviewers note, this is one thrilling performance. Her voice has gotten richer, and the delivery cant be beat. "God Will" is worth the price of the CD all by itself.

For those who are long time fans, listen to her original version of some of these songs, and the ones on this CD back to back. You will hear a wonderful transformation.

5 out of 5 stars Ditto what all the guys said!.......2003-08-05

I really can't top the first three reviews. They said it all. I will add that I was glad to see a version of "God Will", since I love that song. Hearing it sung by Tracy, who has been my favorite singer since I first heard her back in Madison, Wisconsin, in college, was a real thrill.
I was glad to see the arrangments taking a bit of a back seat to her voice on this CD, allowing her "blues belter" vocals to come to the foreground. The slower than usual tempos on some cuts also helped to highlight Tracy's incredible vocal talent.
I agree with James, if you have a chance to see her live, don't miss it. She can stand three feet away from the microphone when singing, and still blow you right out of the room with the power of her voice.
Buy it...you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Missing Out On This CD Is A Crime!.......2003-07-05

Devotees of singer Tracy Nelson (and I certainly number myself among them) have been waiting for years for an official 'live' release from this phenomenal artist. Tracy has released 21 albums prior to this release, all of which have their wonderful moments and some are downright clasics(including 2001's independently released EBONY & IRONY, as well as I FEEL SO GOOD, and MOVE ON from the 1990s (both on Rounder Records), and several re-releases from her early days in the 60s and 70s). It's all great stuff, but even folks who love her studio work have been known to come out of one her concerts utterly astonished. It's almost as though even the best studio settings cannot do this astonishingly powerful singer justice.

I've always said that if I were a waiter in a club where Tracy Nelson was performing, I'd probably be fired before the night was through. Because I'd doubtless just stand there stock still, tray in hand and jaw dropped to my chest (if not the floor) in a state of complete awe.

So at last, we have the live album that many of us have been awaiting for the last two decades or longer. It's probably a cliche to say that it was "worth the wait," but in fact, it was.
This release is the work of a mature artist, one still very much in control of her instrument, but also whose artistry and vision has only deepened over the years. She wrote her signature song, the classic "Down So Low" when she was in her early twenties--a remarkable feat for someone so young--but the version included on this recording seems to come from an even deeper place. She sings every song on this record with conviction and authority, but nowhere is it more evident than on "Down So Low" and on Memphis Slim's blues classic "Mother Earth"--both of which she recorded for the first time in 1968.

Tracy has assembled a crackerjack band for this recording. She does not always work with a horn section, but when she does, the results are nearly always stellar. The horns give her that extra oomph and send her already soaring vocals into the stratosphere. And she has found a great setting and a more than enthusiastic audience in that Tennessee prison. This is an audience starved for music, and even if they had no idea who Tracy was beforehand, they respond eagerly and gratefully to what they soon realize is a truly first rate performance.

The selection of material could not have been better. Aside from the two early classics mentioned above, there are new versions of songs from throughout Tracy's lengthy career. She opens with a "I Need All the Help I Can Get," originally recorded in the 90s for Rounder. It's a rousing opener and sets the tone nicely. She follows with a song that she has never actually released on record, although she has been known to perform it live before, Patsy Cline's classic "Walkin' After Midnight." Tracy is one of the few singer's who can take on a Patsy Cline number and successfully make it her own. (Eat your heart out, LeAnn and k.d.) So in the space of two songs, she demonstrates her astonishing range and versatility. She follows up with another new track, Lyle Lovett's "God Will," a song which fits her voice perfectly and which demonstrates that she did not leave all sense of irony back with the last record's "ebony."

Her powerful r&b shouters never cease to astound, and stand up to repeated plays. But those repeated plays will also demonstrate the subtlety with which she approaches the ballads included here. Her phrasing on "God Will" and on "Tennessee Blues," first recorded in 1972 or '73, is controlled, disciplined and intelligently executed. She could teach a master class--provided she could find students worthy of her time.

Tracks that will be more or less familiar to fans are given new life in their live versions. Songs like the recent "Got A New Truck" and 1974's "After The Fire Is Gone" were originally recorded as duets (and remarkable ones they were too; the former having been a joint effort with another great lady, Marcia Ball, and the latter a collaboration with the legendary Willie Nelson--who is, by the way, NO RELATION), and as good as the originals were, it's great to hear Tracy tackle them as solo numbers. Nearly all previously recorded tracks have been revamped in ways that fans will find interesting, if not illuminating.

Nearly every review of Tracy Nelson's recorded work or of her live performances includes the observation that it's a downright shame that she is not better known. That's another cliche that's become hard to avoid when talking about this great singer. From everything I know about her, I don't think she particularly cares about reaching superstar status. She is first and foremost, an artist. But like many of her devoted fans, I still am eager to spread the word to as many receptive souls as possible. I figure it's doing them a favor.

5 out of 5 stars Tracy Rocks The Jail House.......2003-06-23

When the hell is the public ever going to catch on to this woman? Most of the record stores I've visited have only had one or two copies in stock. That is an absolute sin. In her 35 year recording career, this is Tracy Nelson's 21st release - 22nd, if you count the Best of Tracy Nelson / Mother Earth - yet for some reason, she is not a household word. (Well, I could give you lots of reasons, but don't get me started). Established superstars (such as Willie Nelson, Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor, to name just a few) have praised her for years as "one of the best voices around" and "a singers singer". She has a powerful, expressive voice, demonstrating a talent that is almost superhuman, but inexplicably, she remains a secret. Her music is known only to music insiders, and a few lucky fans, who seem to number only in the thousands, instead of the millions she deserves.

For her first live album, recorded before inmates in the West Tennessee Detention Center, Tracy revisits two of her old standards from her first Mother Earth album - Down So Low (her self-penned theme song) and Mother Earth, an wonderful blues reflection on mortality written by Memphis Slim, from which her old band took their name. Esquire magazine once called Down So Low, "the saddest song ever written". Down So Low has been recorded by Linda Ronstadt, Etta James and Maria Muldaur (among others). It has never received a stronger treatment than it does here. Her legendary vocal prowess has only improved over the years, and her reputation as singing powerhouse is well supported by this release. This version of Down So Low compares quite favorably with the original, which she recorded in 1968, proving that she still has it. How many singers can re-record the same song after 35 years and sound better than ever doing it? I can't easily think of a single one.

The venue has an impressive effect on the selections. For anyone who has ever been to jail, or if you are a family member, or the loved one of a prisoner / ex-prisoner, some of these songs will take on a heartbreaking intimacy that is almost too personal to bear. When Tracy sings her theme song, Down So Low, suddenly, for me, it is no longer a song of unrequited love; instead I hear my own mother wailing in anguish at the first arrest of my older brother ("When you went away, I cried for so long...").

I have been privileged to hear Tracy live many times, the experience of which no record can ever fully convey - her voice is just too powerful. Before I even read the notes, I looked at the track listing and saw Tennessee Blues, and my first thought was, "I've never heard her do that live. That's an old one". Almost reflexively, I started to run the lyrics through my head, and a chill ran down my spine. "If I had my way, I'd leave here today, I'd leave in a hurry..." the song starts. Instantly, images of those inmates flooded my mind, smiles and maybe a few tears on their contented faces. All of a sudden, the identification they must have experienced with that lyric and the stark reality of their situation came pouring out of the words right at me, and the song took on a new, heartbreaking, yet comforting profundity. I can see those inmates in their drab uniforms (no matter what color, prison garb is drab), nodding their heads and agreeing 1000% with the sentiment behind the song. "A place I could use... a place I could lose those Tennessee Blues". Wow. Tennessee Prison. Tennessee Blues.

Tracy doesn't stop there. She has finally committed to record her version of Walkin' After Midnight, made famous by the late Patsy Cline. Tracy's rendition owes nothing to Patsy; as few singers can, she manages to make it her own without dredging up comparison to Patsy, or detracting at all from the memory of the original.

She also revisits some of her best stuff with new verve, including her self-penned (with assistance from Marcia Ball) Got A New Truck (a song I confess I loathed until this reading - but I'm not into autos) and a solo version of the duet for which she and Willie Nelson received a Grammy for Best Country Duo in 1974, After The Fire Is Gone. She has lost none of her incredible voice, and seems to improve with age, like fine marijuana.

Added to this wonderful mix of Blues, R & B and Country (and ALL her albums are a wonderful mix of Blues, R & B and Country, with just a smidge of Country-Blues influenced Rock to round it all out) is a thoroughly original arrangement / cover of Lyle Lovett's lyrically ironic God Will, which may just be the most understated and effective track on the whole album, since it suits her style perfectly and offers her fans choice to add to their list of favorite Tracy Nelson tunes.

Since acquiring my copy last week, I have played this album no less than two dozen times. It gets fresher and more creative with each listen. If you are familiar with Tracy at all, you will not hesitate to acquire this release. If you're not, I can think of few better introductions to her craft - notably her 1969 classic Country album (Mother Earth Presents Tracy Nelson Country - Mercury Records - available on a Reprise CD) or her 1978 masterpiece Homemade Songs (Flying Fish Records - available on a CD also containing her complete second Flying Fish issue, Come See About Me). Try her out soon - you will not be sorry. Submitted June 22, 2003.

5 out of 5 stars Live From Cell Block D.......2003-06-18

First of all - let's get one thing straight. Tracy Nelson can do no wrong. That said, this is an incredible live album, which was a long time in coming.

I'm sure jokes will be told about singing to a 'captive' audience, but it takes a true talent to be able to get away with singing a song in a jail entitled "Send Me to the 'Lectric Chair".

Other highlights are her own "Down So Low" "Tennessee Blues" and "After the Fire is Gone". Actually, as is true of every Tracy Nelson album, there is not a bad song in the bunch. Listen to "God Will" or "Mother Earth" and try not to be moved.

Bottom line, buy this CD - you won't be sorry. And while you're at it, spread the word. Forget about all the flavors of the month - Tracy Nelson is a force to be reckoned with.

5 out of 5 stars Superb album from start to end.......2005-08-24

Honestly, this almbum was pretty awesome. I am abig Fu Manchu fan and Amazon suggested I may like this band (Nebula). They were right. Awesome sound to come from only 3 guys. Great riffs, great beats, wicked kicks and crisp 'ozzy'-esque vocals. A good buy if you're into stoner metal with some chilled moments between the riffs.

4 out of 5 stars Nebula - 'To The Center' (Sub Pop).......2005-01-17

Believe this to be the band's first full-length CD/lp.I saw these guys out on tour awhile back with Atomic Bitchwax.Nebula is probably one of the better stoner rock bands out there now.Plain and simple, just good riffs and extremely tight musicianship.Cuts I couldn't get enough of were the title track "To The Center","What You're Looking For","You Mean Nothing",their Stooges cover "I Need Somebody" and "So Low".The line-up:Eddie Glass-guitar&vocals,Mark Abshire-bass and Ruben Romano-drums.Will appeal to fans of Atomic Bitchwax,Kyuss,Monster Magnet,Orange Goblin and Fireball Ministry.

5 out of 5 stars very cool stoner rock with an indie feel.......2004-12-03

wow. this is a solid album. i've listened to dozens upon dozens of "stoner-rock" bands, & find myself either being bored, or unimpressed by the ridiculous kyuss/monster magnet/early sabbath similarities. don't get me wrong - this album unquestionably has some elements of all these bands (what stoner-rock band doesn't), but it's a straight-forward rock n roll album. the tunes all stand apart from one another (not a simple cookie-cutter formula, in terms of song-writing), & the vocals give it the indie/punk feel that sub pop is known for. while i don't think this is a revolutionary album, it DEFINITELY stands apart from the majority of stoner bands you'll come across. the understated blues guitars are great, in that they fit the sound of the band, while being impressive enough to catch your attention, not overtake & detract from the overall sound. the vocals are refreshing in their punk feel, but fear not stoners: there are plenty of "alright!"'s, "yeah!"'s & phased & fuzzy guitars to make us all happy. get this album. i doubt you'll regret it.

nebula,is about as crunchy as they come, lumped into the stoner/doom/cosmic genre, they have definetley made they're mark.eddie glass's vocals/guitar work are amazing.this is they're sub pop debut, and what a debut it is....as good as "let it burn" tracks to watch for : "to the center", "between time", and they even do a stooges cover "i need somebody" if you like heavy music this is a must have

5 out of 5 stars Their Best, Despite Being Very Commercial.......2000-06-20

Nebula have been one of my favorite bands ever since Eddie Glass left Fu Manchu. This is their most amazing record yet, but I have seen reviews of it in such major magazines as rock sound, CMJ New Music Monthly, and Metal Hammer, and this is not good for their future. Anyway, the guitar rock of this CD is really great and sunbaked, and the bass is deep and fuzzy. The drums are thunderous as usual, and add a lot more to the music. The best songs here are Freedom, To The Center, So Low, and You Mean Nothing. There are also more acoustic parts and they eventually explode into large riff fests. For fans of Mudhoney and Dozer.

5 out of 5 stars Classy, classic sci-fi adventure.......2007-07-20

JOURNEY to the CENTER of the EARTH is classic(Jules Verne)sci-fi that's classy to the max. JAMES MASON(of WALT DISNEYS's 20,000 Leagues under the Sea,CATAIN NEMO fame)is the Professor. He stalwartly leads an expedition comprised of radiantly beautiful Arlene Dahl;an appealingly heroic Pat Boone;Herculean Peter-the-big-guy,Ronson;& the big guy's existential(and LATER tasty for bad guy,Thayer David)cool-as-a-moose pet DUCK,Gertrude.
THE JOURNEY is an action/danger packed Quest, full of beautifully photographed surprises~ Sequences from Carlesbad Caverns in New Mexico,USA are spectacular;as ls the gigantic Alice-in-Wonderland Mushroom Forest and eerie, phosphorescent kalaidescope pools).Battles between ferociously nasty dinosaurs(trick/interposed live-action blow-up photos of muy feo Australian Dragon lizards)are climactic. As is the ordeal of survival in magnetically-induced storms on a vast,center-of-the-Earth sea which culminates in discovery of The Lost City of Atlantis.

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH is a film of highest production and entertainment value. The story is well-paced and suspenseful. The cast...again and again...is ingratiatingly appealing.SFX,for the time, were wonderous;they are still servicably good to excellent. This,as has been observed,is superior, unreservedly recommended FAMILY adventure comprising what was once best in Hollywood spectacles...and still is.

5 out of 5 stars Journey to the Center of the Earth.......2007-07-04

My son was so interested in seeing this movie after seeing the book at a Doctor's office. He has been thrilled with the quality and the story!

4 out of 5 stars In the spirit of Jules Verne.......2007-06-29

Collectively, Verne's novels were called "Les voyages extraordinaires", and this film, whatever licenses have been taken with the source, aspires to that. While the prelude to the journey is too long (we even have to endure Pat Boone croon a tuneless number), once we've plunged into the Earth, the film takes on an air of wonderment.

Cast chemistry contributes in a big way. James Mason, a brooding but stout leader. Pat Boone, surprisingly effective as an eager student (but not so successful as a Scotsman). Arlene Dahl, a ravishingly beautiful damsel who is sage and sane and only distressed when she really really needs to be. Real-life Icelander Peter Ronson, a tall man's man -- who loves his pet duck. Gravelly-voiced American (believe it or not) Thayer David, pure villainy.

While the special effects are often praised, I think much of the credit for the wonder and awe of the film goes to the elaborate sets.

And I doubt that Bernard Herrmann had a better vehicle for his mystical, sonorous music.

Add the final ingredient: a script that mixes fun and excitement with the fantastical.

Blend thoroughly and you have an extraodinary voyage for the teenager in you.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Adventure Movie of All-Time!!!.......2007-06-17

I am in my late 20's and I saw this for the first time when I was a young teenager. It captivated my imagination in so many ways and after viewing it repeatedly within the last few years after getting it on DVD I have to say it completely stands the test of time. I wouldn't change a single thing about the characters, actors chosen to play them, the plot, the special effects, anything. It all fits together perfectly, like in the same way Goonies and Ghostbusters did. Plus the soundtrack is phenomenal. Every time I hear an excerpt from it I get sucked back into the movie. It's perfect music for the journey.

The screenplay is excellent. It has the right amount of scientific basis, comedy spots here and there, intelligent lines, logical dialog, and the best possible way of telling a story about a journey to the center of the Earth. I'm no scientist, but I'm pretty sure the center of the earth is molten and extremely hot and not possible to get to. So the story in general cannot actually happen in real life. But that doesn't matter. the story here is presented in the best possible way that it *could* happen if it were a possibility. And presented in a way most people would actually want it to happen.

The reason I love older adventure movies more than newer ones is because they didn't have computer effects to use so they made every thing, which in turn gave it a more tangible quality and made it more real. Most of the special effects completely hold up. The lizards seem real, the ocean scenes and the journey down all seem extremely real.

It's a top notch production all the way through. Every now and then the stars align on a film and it surely did with this one. I wouldn't change a thing about it. I like it even more than "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" which is another Mason classic.

If you haven't seen it then without a doubt get it. It's great for the whole family. Nothing is excessive or would limit any age groups.

5 out of 5 stars Classic film.......2007-05-18

This movie is a classic and should be in the library of any Jules Verne fan!

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars The Standard.......2006-12-05

This audio collection of quotations from A Course in Miracles has been a mainstay in my life and practice for about 23 years. This is a wonderful companion for a car ride or for those moments in the morning when you are preparing for the day ahead.

The compilation of quotes really lead one to introspection and trigger new perspectives on a regular basis. This is a wonderful gift for a friend who is into A Course in Miracles and a wonderful introduction for someone you think might enjoy studying the course.

Beverly and Steven made another audio compilation of course material, but it doesn't have the same sheen as this. It seems to go deeper and have some darker tones in it, which I never connected to in the same way, although it's still very good.

What a great CD! From the classic take the "A" Train to the electric "Back to Basics," I can't stop listening to this music. It hasn't been out of my CD Player since it arrived.

4 out of 5 stars Some great LCJO playing here!.......2005-07-07

I've heard the LCJO live I think 3 times. This is, along with Live in Swing City: Swingin' With Duke are the only 2 CDs I currently own of the group.

"Take the 'A' Train" begins with a fabulous piano introduction lead into an Ellington classic that never stops swinging.

"Things To Come" is another notable track. Jon Faddis takes a stratospheric solo from the very first note over a near 400 bpm song. This is probably the fastest I've heard this tune, and surprisingly enough it came from a big band. Alto saxophonist (who is unfortuntely underrated) takes a burning solo, chorus after chorus.

"Back To Basics" is a fun one to listen to. Several musicians in the band get their chance in the spotlight. Wynton pulls off some laughing effects through his horn, and a ripping muted trombone solo by I think Wycliffe Gordon.

I would have given this CD 5 stars but I am not too into the baritone vocalist in two of the tracks. Too deep for my tastes.

Definately a favorite among my big band CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Professionally, The Big Band Equivalent Of MJQ.......2004-03-01

There is no other way to describe this organization in the manner that it perpetuates jazz at its finest!

This is a compilation of performances from 1992-1994 on tour at Poughkeepsie,NY, Cleveland, and the Universities of Princeton, Michigan, and Iowa as well as Lincoln Center,NYC.

I would have bought this cd purely on it containing the rarely recorded Ellington masterpiece "The Tattooed Bride". The performance of the additional material was an unexpected pleasure!

The cd leads off with a version of "Take The 'A' Train" which adheres to the original Ellington band arrangement but allows the soloists a greater lattitude, such as the piano intro by Sir Roland Hanna and a masterful exhibition of trumpet playing by Lew Soloff.

The 1927 Ellington composition "Black and Tan Fantasy" provides some virtuoso mute and plunger work by Wynton Marsalis on trumpet and Wycliffe Gordon on trombone which was enthusiastically received by the audience.

"Express Crossing" written by Wynton Marsalis leaves no doubt in anyone's mind of the imagery of trains! This is part of a critically acclaimed score written for the New York Ballet. This one, for me, was a little far out!

"Light Blue" is a Thelonious Monk composition that comes off well....with some fine examples of trumpet growels from Marsalis.

"Jelly Jelly" is a real down blues with vocalist Milt Grayson sounding quite a bit like the great Billy Eckstine who was responsible for the lyrics. He also does the vocal on the Sigmund Romberg - Leo Robin collaboration on the infrequently recorded "Lost In Loveliness" ......which was previouly recorded by both Ellington and Eckstine.

The Ellington arrangement of "Boy Meets Horn", written as a showcase for trumpeter Rex Stewart, is followed pretty closely except for the trumpet solo by Wynton Marsalis which is more extended and reveals his mastery of the instrument (never a doubt in my mind!).

I found it hard to believe that Dizzy Gillespie's composition, "Things To Come", was first presented back in 1946. Small wonder that it blew away everyone for its sheer velocity alone! The fiery solos on this one go to alto saxist Jesse Davis and the high note trumpet specialist, Jon Faddis.

I really dig Wynton's "Back To Basics", an excerpt from his extended work "Blood On The Fields". The tension and the beat on this just keeps building on solo after excellent solo. This one really cooks and if your fingers don't end up snapping.....you better check your pulse!

Finally as a closer, the extended Ellington work (almost 12 minutes), "The Tattooed Bride". It sounds great in stereo...but....some of the beauty of the orchestration gets lost (possibly because of being recorded live in an auditorium?). For this reason alone, I still prefer the 1950 studio recording which has been re-released on cd ("Masterpieces by Ellington" on Columbia Masterworks).

Bottom line: If you dig really good big band, soloists who are masters, a fine repertoire of jazz, and in particular Duke Ellington, in a responsive live setting, then you will want and enjoy this one!

4 out of 5 stars great ellington stuff!.......2001-05-12

The LCJO did a great job reproducing these Ellington masterpieces. The playing by Wynton is always good, but Jon Faddis, as well as Nicholas Payton, Lew Soloff, Roger Ingram, and Joshua Redman all make appearances on the cd. There are a few songs on the disc that I place ahead of others, like ATrain, Boy Meets Horn, and Things to Come. Some of the songs don't seem to go as far as they should, or could go. It is a great overall cd with good live recording. A very swinging band that recreates well while putting their own stamp on the work.

    3 out of 5 stars Good.......1999-05-19

There are a few excellent cuts on this record where the LCJO is in top form, and that's pretty hard to beat. I'd buy the record again just for these tracks.

hilt, Journey to the Center of the Bowl (Nettwerk, 1991)

How to describe the brilliance that is Journey to the Center of the Bowl? It retains the incredible diversity of hilt's debut album, Call the Ambulance... Before I Hurt Myself, while still sounding like a more coherent piece of work. Al Nelson is more in tune, and doing more of the lounge-lizard vocal thing. After almost fifteen years, I have yet to decide whether that's a good or a bad thing. The lyrics are almost as inspired here as they are on the first disc, and Nelson has more of a sense of cleverness, rather than all-out insanity, throwing in little surprises ("Birdwatcher" is especially fetching) and reversals throughout the lyrics. The band sounds not much different, if you strip away the genre-bouncing; it's still excellent, solid performance.

This, folks, is what pop music could have been for the last fifteen years. Listen, and weep for what it has become. **** ½

This is some really gay teen goth dance crap. A must for hard core Skinny Puppy collectors only, and by that I do not mean that this album is in any way hard core. It's more like,"hey, let's get a bad singer and make an album"!

Back when this record was released i was in the midle of my teenage punk rock crisis. Tired of everything and anything. Then came HILT. Everything came into place, sweetnes invaded every crazy corner of my mind and life went on. Just to say that this album KICKED IT. And will kicck it forever. Buy it only if you think you deserver it.
    Que viva el RoCK!

    5 out of 5 stars Truly outstanding.......1999-08-09

I really is a shame that this band never got much radio play (is any). They've produces some real gems from a palatte of jazz, techno, hard-rock, punk, and psychedelia. (However, I must concede that the song "SuperHoney" mentioned in another review on this page as "an incredible sweet innocent love song" is not to be taken seriously: It's a cover and a parody you fool. Listen closer, the lyrics are overtly naive and sentimental to the point of being ridicilous. Great Album.
