5 out of 5 stars Great follow-up to "The Key.".......2007-03-20

"Thresholds" rocks through and through. Dan Izzo does vocals in place of Mike Browning so Mike can focus soley on drumming, and Dan sounds EXACTLY like him so you get the same evil vocals with better drumming. Mike Davis and Sean McNennery really step up their already stellar guitar playing by replacing their frequent but short guitar solos founds in "The Key" with fewer but longer (and even more technical) solos and it really works. Louis Panzer's keyboarding sounds more atmospheric in here than "The Key," and it sounds even better than before. While "The Key" is better, "Thresholds" is a very close second.

Best songs: "Climate Controller," "Arctic Crypt," "Alter Reality," and "Gridzone."

Definitely the best album of 1992, too bad I couldn't see these guys on the Grindcrusher Tour with Morbid Angel and Bolt Thrower back in 91', I would have creamed my pants about eight times.

Find the cheapest copy available, these go for really high prices so be careful when bidding (my copy cost me $92).

5 out of 5 stars Sounds familiar but way better.......2004-02-26

Well...if you take Death's "Human", Cynic's "Focus", and a little Yngwie Malmsteen and mix it together and record a cd based off that, you will undoubtedly get Nocturnus' "Thresholds". I can't even begin to describe this cd. The drums are fast and change speed, the keyboards are OUTSTANDING, the bass is good, but what really stands out from most death metal bands are the razor sharp guitars. The solos, harmonies, rhythm, all are there and pack a punch. I am almost going to say this is progressive but Dream Theater makes that term sound ambigously OVERDONE. I can't believe I waited until 13 years after it came out to get it. A MUST HAVE for any metal fan.

Wow! I see why it was so hard to get a copy of this. It's beyond great..and has become one of my personal fave albums of all time! Nocturnus really shows their talents in the epic piece of pure brilliance...the keyboards, drumming, and guitar work are almost unbeaten by any other Death metal band....this is a superior album! No regrets. Thresholds is definitely Nocturnus' best album and one of the best death metal cds period..and in one song the echoing effect of the vocalist voice gives it a cool cerebral sound and the sci-fi subject matter makes for an interesting listen...try to find this baby..you'll love it! It's a shame this band only has 3 albums I know of..I want more! Thresholds is good..it's darn good....pure brilliance! Will not dissapoint!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Death Metal records ever!.......2001-06-29

No joke. From the underrated, seldom heard (but often heard of) band, comes this total mind-blowing epic masterpiece of sound and fury. Each song is intricately constructed, full of amazing riffs executed with technical precision. This recording is just an incredible image-inducing barrage of heavy guitars, solos, and eerie keyboard cuts; the songs flow together to create a constant story of demon-robots, unholy science and magical machinery - man, it causes the imagination to come to life. Every song is great, especially Climate Contoller, Aquatica, Subterranean Infiltrator and Tribal Vodoun. Nocturnus is truly original, getting away from that over-used satanic mumbo-jumbo that is so common, and going with a science-fiction, cerebral assault. It's cool. Pick it up.

      Album Description

If Detritus' new record 'Thresholds' could be rendered into a human being 'Weird Science'-style, it would undoubtedly take the shape of a well-to-do orchestra conductor riding around the estate with a dirty great boom box on his shoulder. Intrigued? Then read on... Blessed with an ability to cast epic vistas from a palate of synth strings, David Dando-Moore (aka Detritus) then pummels them into a blooded mess with battalions of hip-hop gilded beats and border-line break-core mopping up any survivors. Literally kicking off with the incendiary 'Day One', Detritus balances himself somewhere between the doomtronics of Zan Lyon and the Vicks Vapour licks of classic rave - the result being as unsettling and oddly listenable as you'd expect. Thresholds mixes ardour and melancholy as never before. Thresholds is a CD that Detritus had to write before being able to move on to new grounds.
