5 out of 5 stars A Beautifully Written Piece of Art.......2007-06-29

Based on a purely classical mind set, this is one of the most beautiful string tribute albums there are. Granted, Muse fans who usually don't listen to string albums probably won't appreciate it, but for the classical lover, this is the tribute album to start with. The String Tribute to Muse is an absolute masterpiece amongst tributes.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not for the casual fan.......2007-05-19

I agree very much with Brian Allen; you should only spend the money on this one if you happen to be either a big fan or strings or a big fan of Muse, and I fall very much into the latter. As far as the songs themselves, some sound beautiful. "Bliss" nearly breaks your heart as an all-string tribute. But other songs are hard-core alternative rock, like "Stockholm Syndrome" so songs like that sound awkward at best. If you like a song by Muse here and there, only have one or two of their CDs, and think, "Oh, they're alright," don't bother purchasing it. However for big Muse fans, it's a nice treat.

2 out of 5 stars Review from a classical musician.......2006-02-05

I play cello in a string quartet and am a huge Muse fan as well. As far as this compilation of, perhaps, some of Muse's greatest hits, a string quartet version just doesn't depict the kind of emotional response that I get from listening to the orignal trio. I listened to some of these tracks and thought I was listening to my buddies playing Muse songs by ear and just messing around. Save your money, or better yet, for the same price go out and treat yourself to the original albums that these songs derived from (Showbiz, Origin of Symmetry and Absolution)!

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't do them justice........2006-02-04

Well, before I say anything about this tribute album, let me state clearly for the record that I am a HUGE Muse fan, and always will be. I'm also very fond of classical music, so I thought this album would be incredible. Unfortunately, that assumption was way off. To me, this was basically like a bunch of recordings of people humming Muse songs. The original tracks have so much power and emotion, but these versions seem cheap and empty. If they would have had a full orchistra it would have been awesome. The string quartet just doesn't cut it, at least not for me. Of course, this is all in my humble opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2005-12-06

I'll do an actual review later, but here are some of my thoughts on this album, since only one other person rated it so far. The songs all sound great, but they hardly differ from the original versions, and none of them are really that much different. Most of them sound note for note the same, but just played on the strings. This is ok because Muse has a lot of classical influence in their songs, but I wish the makers would have put more effort into this. If you're a casual fan you can skip, but if you really like string tributes or Muse you should get it. Some better string tributes, which are less basic, are the ones for Nine Inch Nails, Coldplay, and A Perfect Circle.

Album Description

Holy Happy Hour, the debut album from Stockholm Syndrome is a bracing and revelatory intersection of captivating songs, deep grooves and virtuosic playing that marks the arrival of an important new band in no uncertain terms. This is genre-transcending music…scratch that-it's genre-shredding music, the product of gifted, attuned and adventurous artists pushing each other past the normal limits to a place that is rarely visited. Given the group's back-story, it wouldn't be inaccurate to state that the five band members were as stunned by what they had collectively summoned up as listeners will be when they hear it.

5 out of 5 stars Score this rocker! You deserve the pleasure!!.......2007-04-03

Stockholm Syndrome, during their far too brief life span in 2004, was one of those rare "super groups" made up of members of other tight bands and studio musicians who simply gel awesomely. Their songs talk about reality, beautiful and ugly as it gets, and they stay diversified without making it seem like they are going out of their way to play a variety of styles. The tunes, "Empire One", "White Dirt", "Shining Path", and the remake of the Climax Blues Band hit "Couldn't Get It Right" alone is easily worth what is being asked for a used or new copy of this fantastic disc. There is only one tune I consider a 'bump on a log' on the disc, and my wife likes that one too. If you like top notch musicians getting together and jamming, you will love this disc. Pick it up, you deserve it! Also, be on the look out for any of the live material that shows up now and then, as that is where the band truly shines. Stockholm Syndrome got together in 2007 to play a bennefit show for percussion member Wally Ingram, and it kicked!!

I can't ever figure out where in the world the music industry's head is at when something like this can come along and NOTHING gets said about it. Give it a listen, better yet if you ever get a chance to go see them live and you will know of what I speak.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome!.......2006-01-30

Knowing that it was Jerry Joseph and Dave Schools, I had a feeling this was going to be good. But, the reality did not prepare me for the experience of this ensemble. This is one of the MUST HAVE CD's for anyone into the alternative=jam band=rock sounds.

SIMPLY AWESOME BADASSERY!

5 out of 5 stars YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS BAND LIVE!!! .......2004-08-08

i saw these guys a few weeks ago in winston-salem, nc... they are INCREDIBLE! my brother and i are still talking about this show! i think everyone else did a great job of describing the sound... buy the album, its great, but dont miss a chance to see their live act.

5 out of 5 stars Album rock is back!!!.......2004-08-05

Trying to explain the sound produced by Stockholm Syndrome is like trying to morph the Arcangels, Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Phish, Climax Blues Band, and Soundgarden with the undeniable songwriting capabilities of Jerry Joseph and the aura of Dave Schools' bottom end. Wally Ingram is an absolutely amazing drummer, and Eric McFadden's chops are one to marvel at. Danny Dziuk blends in an almost spacy key presence that is like a layer or incandescent paint over the rest of the music. This rivals great albums of our time like Nirvana Nevermind, Led Zeppelin 4, Rolling Stones Exile on Main St., etc.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars One of BB's good releases........2006-12-29

The BB have a habit of only having every other record of theirs being really good. This one falls in to the "really good" category. Catchy as hell songs and some great riffs make this a repeat listen for me. Sure, BB are pretty cheesy at times, but they do what they do really, really well.

Oh, I can do without the song "friends" though. That song blows.

4 out of 5 stars STOCKHOLM SYNDROME.......2006-05-14

People Like People Like People Like Us".
Limpido ma potente, rauco ed accelerato "Stockholm Syndrome" ? un disco che cattura l'ascoltatore dall'inizio alla fine, per tutta la sua durata.
I migliori brani dell'intera produzione, possono essere facilmente identificati in "Earn The Crown", "a Song For The Outcast", "Year By Year" e soprattutto nel classic rocker "Friends", vero lavoro corale che ospita diversi "big" della scena rock mondiale quali il compianto Joey Ramone accanto a Kory Clarke, Tyla e tanti altri.
A chi importa?

4 out of 5 stars Identity Syndrome.......2004-04-25

Backyard Babies started out as European punks who never cared much for the English and American rules of punk minimalism. They were never afraid to create a huge heavy sound by mixing in metal, glam, power pop, and roots rock. This worked stupendously on their album *Total 13* (1998), a lost masterpiece for the ages. Things faltered a bit on the following album, *Making Enemies Is Good* (2001), which showed a worrisome fetish for arena rock. That successful fusion of styles has broken down almost completely on this album, and it appears that the band is having trouble deciding what they want to be. Instead of that huge Babies sound, we get poorly designed riffs, predictable songwriting, and awkward stylistic changes. Some songs that can almost (but not quite) surpass those difficulties include "Earn the Crown," "A Song for the Outcast," and the intriguingly sinister "One Sound."

But otherwise, most of the music on this album just doesn't work at the fundamental level. For example, "Pigs for Swine" keeps switching awkwardly between the doom metal of Black Sabbath and the street boogie of Aerosmith, while "You Tell Me You Love Me You Lie" sounds like an early-80s Def Leppard outtake. The band hits an all-time low on the atrocious "Friends," a community project that shouldn't have graduated the songwriting process. Backyard Babies are still one of the most talented and solid bands on the rock scene today, and their brilliance still pops up in places on this album. From past experience we know they're capable of tremendous things. Hopefully next time they'll try to be themselves, rather than everybody else. (...)

5 out of 5 stars Backyard Babies are the real deal!!!.......2004-03-02

Being a fan of the last couple Backyard Babies CDs I had high hopes for this one, and I was not disappointed. This is probably their most consistant album to date. While not as punk sounding at Total 13, this is still good edgy rock while still having melody. There is also not the variance of styles like on Making Enemy (from I Love to Roll & Painkiller). Each of their albums has its own feel and that is part of Backyard Babies strength.

The disc opens up with Everybody Ready!, a very stong energy rush song to get you hooked. From there is goes into a string of songs that could all easily be singles (I think two of them are) - Earn the Crown, Song for the Outcast & Minus Celcius. All of these are driving anthemic songs that would sound great live in a small or large venue. Things then start shifting a bit in sound. Pigs for Swine is a highly melodic rocker and is the catchiest tune thus far in the album. One Sound is the slowest song on the disc & is reminisant of early Jane's Addiction. Say When (my favorite at this time) sounds like pop punk done right - very upbeat, melodic, short & to the point, yet unlike most pop punk these guys can play their instrument with great proficency & the song doesn't sound like every one else out there. The remainder of the album keeps up the quality displayed throughout the CD. The odd track on here though is Friends which has Nicke only singing in the chorus, it is filled with bits from the likes of Tyla, Michael Monroe & Joey Ramone. The song is interesting & it is nice to hear all of the people they have on there.

This is one of the best CDs I have heard in quite a while. If you are wanting good straight ahead rock this would be an excellent purchase. Scandanavia is putting out most of the best American rock out there - Hellacopters, Flaming Sideburns, Hardcore Superstar & of course, The Backyard Babies.

4 out of 5 stars It's melodic but still pure rock 'n' roll.......2004-02-03

This time, Backyard Babies have polished their dirty rock approach and "Stockholm syndrome" is a very melodic effort. There are plenty of hooks and catchy choruses but it's still solid rock with a lot a bad boy attitude. If you like The Hellacopters' "High visibility" and "By the grace of God", I can assure that you'll also take this album under your wings. Many of the songs have the potential of becoming hits, and the material is very attractive from the beginning to the end. Since you've come this far, maybe you should check out Mustach and their fine effort "Rat safari". Just a tip!

5 out of 5 stars Stockholm Syndrome [Bonus Tracks].......2005-06-05

Backyard babies sounds like a mix between ministry with their grinding guitars and a STP copy when it comes to the vocals and lyrics and this in itself is not a small compliment. In fact this was a very pleasent surprise and this 2003 release stockholm syndrome shows that they have massive potential and if they continue to develop their sound, lyrics and vocals there is no telling of how succesfull they can be. The cover art is nice and the book-let is ok. Overall this is a very good cross over band that can reach the stars with the right releases and with a bit of luck.
