Album Description

Legendary STYX guitarist Tommy Shaw and former NIGHT RANGER and DAMN YANKEE frontman Jack Blades team up again for their second venture on INFLUENCE. INFLUENCE is also the first CD release coming out on the new created VH1 Classic Records label. From Tommy Shaw, on the making of INFLUENCE: 'This album has been years in the making. The recording process didn't take years, but the concept had been looming in our conversations for years. From the day Jack Blades showed up on my doorstep, we discovered our chemistry as writers almost immediately. We became best friends as a result of the music and the experiences we had because of it.' ' After two albums and two world tours with Damn Yankees, we decided to do our first Shaw Blades album, Hallucination. The album was a departure from Damn Yankees that it was more acoustic in nature, not nearly as heavy and more organically produced.' 'On INFLUENCE, we went song by song; some we held very close to the original version, while on others we departed from the familiar arrangements and made them our own.'

Jack Blades and Tommy Shaw complement each other so well. These guys sound awesome. If you enjoyed "My Hallucination", you will certainly enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great Songs and Great Sound.......2007-06-27

I have always been a fan of both Styx and Night Ranger and a major reason for that has been the fact that these groups actually play music in their songs...not just a few power chords behind the vocals, but melody and counter melody, and intricate instrumentation. And I have been a fan of the work Shaw & Blades have done together in the past, so this was an easy purchase for me to make. And I was NOT disappointed.

The songs they chose to cover are all great songs. Reading the liner notes was very interesting to hear how they decided to approach each song, and let me say that my opinion is they did it right on every one. Some they left alone, some they changed up a bit, and they all work well. So good, fact, that not only do my wife and I love it, but my 3 year old and 7 year old daughters love it, and ask to listen to it over and over again. Best cd I've purchased in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2007-06-08

This CD is absolutely outstanding and highly recommend for any 60's and 70's fan.

5 out of 5 stars Keeps on tickin!.......2007-06-15

I'll have to say first, I didn't know what to expect when I bought this CD. I bought it after I heard Influences. That was an excellent (cover song) effort in it's own right. I am very glad I did take the plunge. For those who like original, real electric / acoustic rock with good vocal leads, harmonies and solid, talented musicianship, this a CD is for you. It is not a rehashed Styx, Night Ranger or Dam Yankees mix. It is a bit lighter than most of that music, but very good none the less. It starts right out with the 2 excellent cuts and maintains a high degree of quality throughout. This is no partially talented and/or half-baked attempt to make a few bucks CD either. It's a well recorded CD, with songs crafted by an accomplished, talented duo with Steve Smith on drums. The songs range from outstanding to good. No fills or bummers here. I would have liked to see it a bit longer (more songs). And that's a compliment of sorts too. It was that good. But it's not easy to write a full CD's worth of good songs. This CD is well worth listening to.

5 out of 5 stars More Please! .......2007-06-02

I've never written one of these and probably won't again unless Shaw Blades releases another like Hallucination. Guys, the covers are nice, but why do I want to listen to what I already know when you are capable of producing your own original (and excellent) work. To the listening public: buy this one, enjoy it and join me in beating the drum for MORE!

5 out of 5 stars Two Righteous Rockers Team Up For A Dynamic Duo.......2007-04-27

On HALLUCINATION, Tommy Shaw (Styx, Damn Yankees) and Jack Blades (Night Ranger, Damn Yankees), team up for a session on which they play all instruments except drums, which are handled by Steve Smith. This CD is much lighter in sound than their previous bands' music was, and is, with songs espousing the idea that camaraderie and friendship are more important than trying to impress the opposite sex by wearing clothing made in countries which convict foreign tourists on false charges. Given the fact that Shaw and Blades both advocate sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, that can hardly be seen as a surprise. Shaw's and Blades's views on this issue make HALLUCINATION an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Album.......2007-03-14

I'm a huge styx fan and a huge Night Ranger fan I love these guys' Damn Yankees work as well as their other side projects. This is a fantastic album by 2 of the best musicians to come out of their generation.

4 out of 5 stars Good, strong album.......2006-11-06

If you like Damn Yankees, you'll probably like this CD. It's not quite as heavy, but Shaw & Blades complement each other really well and the tracks are all solid.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding work!.......2006-08-10

It was time that such a talented artist had his own production. The combination of hard rock discharge as well as smooth well executed and arranged soft melodies makes this recording a well deserved update for Night Ranger and Damn Yankees followers as well. My favorites were "Alone tonight" and "Nature's Way" however the whole recording is a great listening experience for any soft or hard rocker.

4 out of 5 stars This CD Shines On and on!.......2005-07-29

I'll admit that I bought this CD because I love Night Ranger and I didn't know what to expect with this CD. When I listened to it, I found that while there are some Night Ranger-like melodys, for the most part, it has a very distinct and separate sound. The more I've listened to it, the more I love it! Jack Blades is an extremely talented songwriter, and this truly showcases his different writing and singing styles and continues to prove what all Night Ranger fans know, and that's what an amazing talent he is. I'd buy it all over again!

1 out of 5 stars It grows on you?? Get an antibiotic!!.......2005-05-19

The only thing tolerable about this album is the decent cover of "Nature's Way". Nice job Jack! This song is no reason to listen repeatedly to this album. The remainder of the cuts are college bar band material. Sorry Night Ranger fans, this does not stir the sleeping hair band giant in me.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2005-02-15

This is a good album that grows on you after at least 3 listens. It's not Night Ranger (or Damn Yankees), but still recommended for Night Ranger fans. This is a diverse collection of songs that sound up-to-date while still maintaining a classic rock vibe. Very worthwile to have this.

5 out of 5 stars It gets even better after repeated listenings.......2004-08-04

Being the hardcore Night Ranger fan that I am I've always looked forward to and suported all the individual projects that all the band members have had to offer over the years. Jack's long awaited solo release really does deliver, it's packed with very well written music from start to finish and is like a breath of fresh air. Highly recommended to all who apreciate great music.

If you're a fan of Night Ranger or Damn Yankees- you HAVE to have this album!

    4 out of 5 stars A nice mix of Jack's music.......2004-03-16

I would have to disagree with the previous writer. This new solo album from Night Ranger bassist/singer Jack Blades is a strong synthesis of his popular bands plus a few new twists. As with most of the Night Ranger, the songs are very melodic, but the choruses might not sink in the first time. I gave the album 3-4 plays, and I liked it better each time. There's no question that Jack has taken many of the songs from various other projects that haven't come to fruition, but then there's the attraction of a solo album. It's all Jack, and the combination of players is whatever fits each tune. In addition, Blades takes liberties to include some new songwriting twists (for him) is some of the music. I hear a little LedZep and some more rhythmic modern rock influences. Those who liked Damn Yankees and/or Night Ranger's "Seven" album will enjoy this . . . given a few listens. (The Japanese bonus track is well worth having.)

    1 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2004-02-28

I really wanted to like this CD. I admire Jack for his work in Night Ranger, Damn yankees, and especially Shaw/Blades, but this CD is mostly filler, with songs that would have sounded better for Journey, Damn Yankees or Night Ranger to release for the respective bands. As a solo artist, Jack just doesn't cut it--the best parts of the Cd are the guest work of Neil Schon and Tommy Shaw. Otherwise, very weak. Save your money--or buy the wonderful Shaw/Blades 1995 release "Hallucination" instead.
