Though some would say that the Misfits just aren't the Misfits without the fiendish Glenn Danzig fronting them, Famous Monsters seems to indicate otherwise. If you're expecting the new Misfits, with Michael Graves taking over for Danzig, to pick up where they left off when Danzig split to form his own band in the early '80s, you don't exactly get that either. The core of the band remains in tact, and consequently so does the Misfits' distinctive gothic punk-pop sound, but it has been beefed up with heavier, more metallic guitars and a booming production that makes old Misfits records sound positively primitive (which, of course, was part of their appeal). But the songs, those hypercatchy tales of twisted lunacy, are still as horror-fixated, infectious, and fun as ever. And though the Misfits' image--the ghoulish face paint and "devil's lock" haircuts--and gothic stage show first brought them notoriety, it's their Halloween-inspired anthems that remain their true calling card and Famous Monster has plenty to add to that legacy. --Adem Tepedelen

5 out of 5 stars Best Misfits Album Since 12 Hits From Hell.......2007-07-08

This is my third favorite Misfits album behind Static Age and 12 Hits From Hell. I'm glad I gave up the whole "dis aint da real Misfits" bullcrap, or else I would've never given this awesome album a chance.

Michale Graves is an excellent singer, every bit as good as Danzig, and maybe even better. Like American Psycho, these songs are heavy, fast, and fun. But the songs here, I think, are better and much catchier than the songs on American Psycho.
Yes, the Graves era sounds like a total different band, but they subject matter is still the same. The Misfits still wrote songs about horror movies and turned them into fun punk songs.
If you're looking for THE horror punk album of the 90's, you'll find it here.
The Misfits truly are Famous Monsters, and this shows it.

5 out of 5 stars This should not disappoint any punk or hard rock music fan!.......2007-07-05

I bought this album a few months ago after hearing it in a friends car and becoming hooked on the songs 'Dust to Dust' and 'Scream!'. After listening to its entirety a few dozen times, I cannot take it out of my own cd player. Now, I was not previously a fan of the misfits prior to the release of this album, so all the fuss about Danzig does not bother me. Keep in mind that I have been a fan of Danzig's solo career for the past few years.
The fact is that the vocals on this CD are amazing, it is filled with catchy guitar riffs and should please any punk or hard rock music fan.

2 out of 5 stars at least they are much better now..not as good as Danzig or modern misfits........2006-11-20

this to is the absolute worst era of the misfits. i mean sure, it has some great songs(scream, saturday night forbidden zone) and im not one of those "no Danzig, no misfits" nuts, but really...this is just really really cheesy and average minus those 3 songs...i understand if they use a little cheese here and there, but this is quesadilla territory....everything following pumpkinhead is disgusting. graves has an okay voice..i think he is either too overrated or too underrated...hes just average...drums are pretty good...and thankfully doyle has somewhat re-united with Danzig! the Misfits do have Dez Cadena playing with them today and im admittedly kind of excited for a new record put out by this line-up ive seen live twice, but the graves/chud era is a pretty bad one...his voice is too poppy sounding...this is one for the media player library.

5 out of 5 stars Michale Graves = amazing.......2006-11-09

I had never listened to the Misfits before I heard Michale Graves on the Roadrunner United album, on the track 'I Don't Wanna Be (A Superhero)'. I loved Graves's voice, it was melodic and really good. When I found out which Misfits albums he sang on, I went and picked them up, this being the first.
The first thing I noticed about this album was the production. For being a Roadrunner album, this disc has really poor production. But, as you listen to the songs you realize that the production actually adds to the flavor of the band. While I still wish the production was cleaner, it does make the record and the songs what they are.
'Forbidden Zone' is a great track, with a great chorus and really fun horror movie (if you'd call Planet of the Apes a horror) lyrics. It paints a picture in your mind of 'what if...?' What if the planet really did exist, etc.
'Dust to Dust' is another great track. It has a catchy as all hell chorus and really helps to solidify just how great of a vocalist Graves is.
Standout tracks include Forbidden Zone, Dust to Dust, Lost in Space, Helena, Pumpkinhead... hell, they're all good.
Pick this and American psycho up, whether you're a long time Misfits fan or not. Get over the fat that that egotistical jerk Danzig is gone, realize it was forthe better, and move on. Love Michale Graves for what he is.

5 out of 5 stars Who cares about Glen?.......2006-09-26

I don't care about Glen Danzig. To be honest, I never did back when he started the Misfits. I really think he was nothing more than "Boring". With his Jim Morrison tone voice singing the same childish choruses back and forth. Oh, man the Misfits were boring. Until Mike Graves came along and a buddy told me to listen to American Psycho. I was not bored at all. Thank u God, finally not the same wannabe hard boy singing from Mr. Danzig with the stupid idiotic message. I seen Danzig in concert and he personally stank the hell out of the music theater. Glen has no talent, he's very mad at himself so he has to take it out on the new Misfits and the world, plus he will never have a life since all he does is sits alone and worships satan.

2 out of 5 stars Well, nearly 10 years later..........2007-02-22

I'm listening to this album for the first time in years. Theoretically I should love this because (a) It's surf rock played by girls, (b)They dress like monsters and (c) They cover Cheap Trick, but sadly it's mostly cornball. Some nice little Man or Astroman style instrumentals are ruined by the "Woo-Hoos" and "Yeah Babys" they shout over top. Don't buy.

1 out of 5 stars Ugh........2002-06-21

Its surf rock in all of its cheesy, awful, stero-typical kitschy glory. The guitar riffs are less than mediocre, the samples are poorly chosen and ill-timed, and the bubble-gum lyrics and vocals go from sexy to scary when you take into consideration that they come from a bunch of 30 something women. The fact that its recorded to sound like a poorly recorded 50s album is the clincher of the deal. Don't waste your time, don't waste your money, and learn from the fact that you can buy a used copy for less than 3 bucks.

5 out of 5 stars imagine The Misfits with nothing but women in the band.......2000-01-04

this is the result. and its very cool!

the songs sound like they come from really terrible 50's b horror movies and those beyond cheesy 60's exploitation films whick is of course what they were going for.

i still can't help thinking about the misfits everytime i listen to this band(famous monsters is also a fits album F is For Fiend has the misfits written all over it).

good stuff, if they got together with the fits the results would destroy the world.

2 out of 5 stars STOP , NOW!.......1999-11-06

OK FIRST OFF IF YOU ARE A HUGE WHITE ZOMBIE FAN LIKE ME, YOU MIGHT THINK YOU NEED THIS ALBUM, BUT TRUST ME, I BOUGHT IT AND IT IS NOTHING LIKE WHITE ZOMBIE, IT IS ALL SURFY AND STUFF. BUT ILL GIVE IT TWO STARS CUZ IT IS A GOOD EFFORT FROM SEAN, AND IT IS GOOD THAT SHE GETS HER OWN BAND NOW, BUT IT ISNT WHITE ZOMBIE AND IF YOU ARENT WHITE ZOMBIE.......WHAT ARE YOU?

5 out of 5 stars MORE GREAT CHICK ROCK.......1999-08-01

Not only is this album fun, but it's by chicks (which makes it rock even harder!) I was never too much of a White Zombie fan, but this album was not what I expected! Famous monsters rock in the night and in the day!

5 out of 5 stars Monster Girls are GO!.......2002-09-13

Fronted by the infamous Devilina (aka Devil Doll, aka Sean Yseult from White Zombie), this now defunct, all-girl group "warms the corpse" with their brilliant fusion of tongue-in-cheek horror antics and groovy surf music.

Fans of White Zombie will find no crunching power chords spewed from Marshall stacks, nor is there a single death growl, so METALHEADS BEWARE!

This cd is a compilation of previously released tracks with some new material, and I believe it marks the last release of this group. Too bad, cause it's great stuff. Granted, it does not have the mind-numbing chops of Dick Dale or other surf greats, but it is a booty-moving bunch of tunes that will remain a treasured part of your collection.

3 out of 5 stars Probably best for nostalgia's sake.......2003-10-20

When I got this LP in 1963 as a pre-schooler, I was so excited I didn't want to let go of it until we got home. It had a great cover, which is only partially reproduced on the CD. On the back were pictures from Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and Dracula. Listening to it was another story. As a child, it bored me. As an adult, I can appreciate it more, but I still just bought the CD for the nostalgia.
There are two tracks, each about 20 min. long, correspoding to side 1 and side 2 of the LP. Both are mostly one character monologues in a style similar to the radio thrillers of the 1940's. Track one has a framework of a gathering of scientists to hear the crude recordings of the Frankenstein monster. The ol' doc had a great setup, as he was even able to record the monster breaking loose and terrorizing some villagers in their own homes! Mostly, it's a monologue by the monster bewailing his fate. Track two concerns a reporter who discovers Dracula's lair and from there it's a monologue by Dracula about how unstoppable he is. All but the most incidental of characters are voiced by busy character actor Gabe Dell.
Dell was in most of the Bowery Boys movies, sometimes as a member of the gang, other times as other characters. I think he had his own radio show called Duffy's Tavern. I remember him as the cross-dressing truckdriver in the "Vigilante" episode of Barney Miller and in a very short-lived summer replacement sitcom in the '70's called "A Year at the Top" as a business man who got Greg Evigan and Paul Shaffer (of the Letterman show) to sell their souls for a year at the top of the music biz. I understand Dell was a regular on the old Steve Allen TV show as Dracula. Unfortunately, to the modern ear, his Dracula sounds not much like Lugosi, but remarkably like Ricardo Montalban, which makes for some unintentional amusement: Mr. Roarke, vampire.
I have another old LP by the same producer which recreates King Kong in a slightly altered form. If you're of the right era and in the right mood, Famous Monsters Speak could be fun and maybe even a little scary in places. If not, well, it's not very expensive. I can't really see the Jason and Freddy crowd getting into this much.
