Simply Amazing.......2007-04-24
I am speechless when it comes to trying to find words to even begin to describe Therion. Amazon recommended Therion after I found and fell for Tristania and Serenia, not that they are even comparable to Therion.
If I could take a stab I would say Therion has a classical opera feel (basically singing in old or ancient languages, opera solos, etc.) with a symphony that still holds a classical feel because there are instruments that I fell in love with in the Baroque Era of classic music (like the harpsichord)that I tend to hear in some of their pieces.
But then on top of that they still have their electric guitars, some screaming lyrics, and everything that is good about a hard band that adds a modern touch to it. I love how they tend to smash them together. You could have a song that starts out with a female solo vocalist that is singing slow and soft, then all of the sudden the song picks up with a screaming male vocalist.
I recently got an IPod radio and downloaded this cd to it. Now my alarm clock every morning is waking up to Therion, and amazingly it has almost been a year and I still haven't tired of this album. I think it is the best thing I ever bought, the cd and the alarm clock.
My Amazon copy of this cd is missing the 11th song!!.......2007-02-17
I feel totally ripped off.... *O Fortuna* is not on my cd. I heard Therion's *O Fortuna* on a prog station and when I saw it was on Deggial I was excited.... only to find out that the song is not on my Amazon copy of this cd!! BUYER BEWARE!!! You are getting only 10 songs and not the FULL 11 songs!
"the serpent coil out of earth and offer fruits of knowledge, eat it and become like a god and enter astral skies".......2007-01-30
I had to ask someone, 'Therion is goth-music' isn't it? 'Yep', came the answer. Considering I missed out on the Goth scene, and all I know about Goth is the name 'Marilyn Manson', and, especially considering Goth girls look so hot. . . it's a good thing I picked up on this.
Therion sound quite unique. Whatever it is it's really good. I don't have their other CDs, so don't know if Deggial is a standout. To me, the parts with the most orchestra and the least guitar work best. It's the most different anyway. Swedish? English? German? who knows what language will be sung next and by which singer; which singers. . .
Metallica had the S&M (symphony & metallica) CD. Actually I'd compare Therion to the wonderful Trans Siberian Orchestra. TSO is popular in the USA, where Therion seem popular in Europe. TSO use christian themes and symbols, Therion dabble in Paganism or the occult. This is a great, different sounding, CD. It would be nice if Therion were to write more about heroic fantasy, or SF, or history, instead of the occult and evil.
Awsome!.......2006-09-26
This album above all others takes several listening sessions to get used to. After that, you fall in love with it.
Unlike most of Therions other albums which are metal with some classical elements and opera singing, this album actually is genuinly about half classical music and half metal/rock.
The music writing has its weak points in a few places. Nothing fancy every goes on with the guitar playing or drumming or anything, but the classical arrangements carry this album along. Extremely complex and layered in places this album is better heard than explained.
Malevolent, Melodic and Absolutely Brilliant.......2005-02-07
Where Vovin fails, Deggial succeeds. Except the first three tracks, which are very reminiscent of Vovin-esque mediocrity, Deggial marked a new peak for the Swedish gothic-metal band. Continuing to use genuine strings and horns, songwriter Christofer Johnsson also continues to enhance the epic nature of his choir arrangements.
Songs such as the infinitely chilling "Ship of Luna" are fit for a horror movie, with choirs accompanying harrowing strings. Male choirs dominate "The Invincible", the most memorable (or catchy) song on the release. The title-track, "Deggial" combines gothic choirs and a spacey wah-wah guitar line in its opening movement. Ungodly? Hardly. Blind Guardian's Hansi Kürsch makes a strangely fitting guest appearance as the only male vocal soloist on "Flesh of the Gods", whose guitars can only be described as restless. Now, the two-part, 9-minute "Via Nocturna". This song has absolutely everything that Therion has come to coin. The song opens with an ominous organ and continues with rapid guitars and drums. The choirs range from apocalyptic to sinister to angelic (especially on the song's second part "The Hexentanz", where every single dynamic of the choir is exhibited in full glory - male, female, solo, group). The song's symphonic interludes are reminiscent of medieval villages on the brink of an incoming attack or soldiers marching down a grassy field. Every possible Therion-esque mood is explored in the song to maximum effect, including an upbeat, soothing ending. As a bonus treat, the band covers Carmina Burana's "O Fortuna" (which, put shortly, is the original song with added distortion and drums).
Deggial is a masterpiece after the third track. "Ship of Luna" begins the intense and astounding journey through gothic and medieval landscapes, redeeming Johnsson and pleasing fans and critics alike. Metal at its best.

I would like to note, that if you buy for the first time a album of Therion buy eighter this one or Vovin. Abouth this one; I think it is one of Therion's best albums, just be carefull that you het the one woth 'O Fortuna' song on it, these are the rarest, and 'O Fortuna' (Original by Carl Orff's Carmina Burana) is I think their best song ever. Thue to rigfhts they had to remove it from their album, but those printes with it remaind in stores. So get it.
