The Burning Is One Hot Title!.......2006-09-08
This is the best of Thunderstone. Any metalhead looking to spice up their collection should give The Burning a try. It has emotional vocals, killer guitar solos, good melodies, and textbook drumming. Overall it is excellent. Five stars.
Malmsteen plus great vocalist & keyboardist, minus narcissism.......2005-06-25
simply amazing piece of work! even the guy like me who is a death metal maniac is astoned by their melodic metal.
I decided to collect this group, they are my new heros.
Very Good But not as Great as I was Hoping For...........2005-05-27
I sampled a couple fast tunes of theirs on the internet before purchasing this CD....
But I was disappointed more of the songs were not as up-tempo as I'd like....
They are a good band though, with several good songs, and very good production quality....I personally liked the faster ones, like Break The Emotion....
So, anyway, they are a good band, have tremendous potential, but are not consistently fast enough for my tastes quite yet, like maybe a Sonata Arctica, or a DragonForce....but I'll have to take another listen to them, see if they grow on me, and I'll have to keep an eye out for them to see if they grow as a band more toward my tastes....
Simply Amazing.......2004-08-05
Thunderstone blew me away with their first effort and they have done it again, "The Burning" is an amazing piece of melodic power metal, full of catchy choruses, nice guitar and bass lines and some awesome guitar solo's
Standout Tracks: Until We Touch The Burning Sun, Sea Of Sorrow, Drawn To The Flame, Evil Within
Another great european band!.......2004-06-13
let me tell you this band is groundbreaking. powerful songs with a bunch of melodies. All the songs are catchy with great riffs and keyboard solos. I would totally recommed this to any one who is likes edguy, sonata arctica.
fav songs: Spire, Forth into the Black, Sea of Sorrow.

An obvious Statovarius clone, but a good one..........2005-02-19
It shouldn't be no real shock to anyone insterested in heavy metal and Stratovarius that Thunderstone hails from the figid land of Finland. In fact, Thunderstone's music isn't that much different from their fellow countrymen. I've heard people refer to them as "shameless copycats" and all sorts of other terms that I can't exactly write here (but feel free to use your imagination).
While that might be true in some respects (for example, listen to the opening of the song "Eyes of a Stranger" - does it sound fimilar? It should if your a Stratovarius fan, considering it is a carbon copy of the opening of the Stratovarius song "Tommorrow", from their 1996 album Episode), Thunderstone is still solid heavy metal any way you look at it, even if it might not be hyper-original (what is original in today's world anyways?) Songs such as the speedy "Let the Demons Free" and "Like Father, Like Son", the soothing "World's Cry" and "Spread My Wings", to the mid-tempo "Virus" and "Eyes of a Stranger" prove that Thunderstone covers every corner and every kind of song you would expect a heavy metal band to cover on a album.
Still, Thunderstone is far from from being its own metalic entity like Sonata Arctica (who took an exsisting style - a.k.a. the Stratovarius style - and infused and tweaked it enough with their own touches to put it above and beyond the copycat label, well at least in my book). Add to the fact that even though this is a very good debut record, it never reaches the level of Sonata Arctica's Ecliptica or other extremely powerful debuts by other bands.
Thunderstone is definately a band to watch out for. Their sophomore release "The Burning" is a also good as well (even though I like this album more), and is a step in the right direction, as the band has begun to explore and experiment their own sound more and less dependent on sounding like other bands as much.
Stratovarius's Infinite + Sonata Arctica-like vocalist.......2003-09-30
What else is there to really say about such an amazing band. The first thing I must make note on is the amazing quality and production of the album. It'll feel like a Stratovarius album in the sense that the quaility is that good - not just how good the songs are and how well the band plays them. Yes, as you are about to read, the songs are wonderful, but the production makes this album a true jewel, similar to Oratory's new CD. So, if you've been reading my other reviews, you should know by now that I don't bother reviewing albums by popular bands - all has already been said about them!
So onto Thunderstone... the only thing that gets to me is that they couldn't actually come up with a name for their album. It's just self titled. Oh and the other thing is that it is rather short - I think... either 42 or 48 minutes - no longer than that. Another big note for Stratovarius hints in Thunderstone is that Timo Tolkki from Stratovarius lets loose in the song "Like Father, Like Son", that I'm listening to now. It is the fastest song on the album and I can compare it to... oh I don't know... ... Find Your Own Voice on Elements Part I? Certainly not as heavy as Father Time on Episode.
So about the songs individually. Fortunately, I have been listening to this CD a lot since I got it for my birthday, so I'm fresh with it's sound. The opener is only 4 minutes, but will give you a perfect of a preview of what you're about to hear - not like a one-hit-wonder, or even a song that just doesn't sound like the rest of the album. Eagleheart by Stratovarius on Elements Part I and Everdream by Nightwish found on Century Child are good examples of songs that stand out on the album. (Okay, here's Timo's riff.) You can tell that a more experienced guitarrist joins in for a brief second there. Also, if you've listened to Infinite, then sure, you'll recognize his style. Let's see, where was I? Oh yeah, track 2. Most second songs immediately draw you away with their inferiorority to the first song, which "Will the Sun Rise" on Episode get sucked into easily, but not Thunderstone's. Also, after the 2nd chorus, it gets really cool - you just have to hear it. Then comes the third song, another mid tempo one. Track 4 is faster and a great transition into the first of 2 perfect songs on the album. And when I say perfect, I mean if Stratovarius or Sonata Arctica was playing them, it wouldn't sound ANY better. "Will to Power" is by far the longest song on the album clocking in at about 8:30. It reminds me of Ivory Tower's "Treehouse", for some reason. You can almost go as far to... oh yes! This is a great comparison... "Fantasia", on Elements Part I. A pattern of choruses only twice with a long intro. It's a great slower song. Then is track 6, a shorter one, and then 7 will get stuck in your head between your 3rd and 4th listens. The chorus is repeated a fourth time right after the third with a different tone and God does it sound perfect. I'm telling you, this is just as good as Stratovarius. Like Father, Like Son I've already raved about, and then track 9 I don't remember that well, but track 10, if I remember correctly, is a great slower, ending, non-epic song. It's very enjoyable.
This, along with Mirror of Madness, a CD I reviewed earlier today, is one of VERY FEW CDs that deserve about 6,000 stars. You just can't be disappointed. I can't recommend other bands you might like if you like Thunderstone. There are too few bands with this quality of production that I can't recommend Skylark and such - you might not appreciate them, even though they are played to perfection, because of the production.
Great POWER metal.......2003-07-01
This isnt a bad cd at all. Great guitars and druming as well as the nice high pitched voice. Songs that got my attenion were "Let the Demons Free", "Virus", and "Eyes of a stranger". This was a great debut cd and I see a bright furture for them.
Not the Best Powermetal,But not the Worst Either.......2003-06-06
I picked this up used just to check out something new.I was pleasently surprised at the great production and sound on this CD.I was also surprised at how "poppy" some of the songs were.Almost more AOR than power metal at times.Alot of keyboards on this album.I'd call this CD Strato-Lite to give a comparison. For a debut though,it's not bad.The vocals are strong and clean, the guitars are just average though and the keys are average too.The best song is Will To Power.About seven minutes long and starting mellow and progressing into a heavier vibe.Very good song. The rest of the songs are just average.Plenty of energy though.Just not on par with the best power metal bands.I'd be interested to see how this band progresses, but as of now they're not really anything special.I'd recommend getting Helloween's The Dark Ride or Sonata Arctica's Silence instead.

Grab The Tools Of Destruction.......2005-08-04
Thunderstone not only has a fantastic name but also a very solid stand on the Heavy Metal genre. Their sophomore release of "Tools Of Destruction" on Nuclear Blast Records really has some key moments to it. Hailing from Finland a Country that seems to be responsible for most of the worlds Power Metal these days; the group takes a slightly different direction with their music. They did not follow the gruff vocals and intensity of Children Of Bodom or the Operatic Adventures of Nightwish and instead deliver a "Traditionally" styled opus that is full of clean vocals on top of truly solid guitars and drums. There is a fair amount of technical precision displayed in such tunes as "The Last Song" which has a nice keyboard riffs over an impressive double-bass drum run and it just draws you into it. When the song "Without Wings" plays you almost feel like you are listening to Sonata Arctica since it could pass for one of this bands tracks. I felt this record was almost like a safe introduction to the world of Power Metal music and I mean this in the most positive way because this was very user Friendly stuff. Great hooks with a nice vocal mix and easy to remember tunes overall. I think this must have been hard on the band to decide which avenue to follow because their fellow Countrymen have achieved amazing success by testing the limits of the Metal genre and instead Thunderstone decide to stick with a more conventional delivery.
The lineup is Pasi Rantanen - vocals, Nino Laurenne - guitars & backing vocals, Kari Tornack - keyboards, Titus Hjelm - bass & backing vocals, Mirka Rantanen - drums. Each member really seems to show their level of talent on the CD and while I don't have their first release "The Burning" (also on Nuclear Blast Records) it is most probably a lot more of this type of stuff. Either way I shall be looking into it. There are some other tracks that stood out for me, and "Liquid Of The Kings" is one as well as the slow and trudging "Welcome To The Real". I found that the more I listened to this CD the more that I felt that Century Media's Nocturnal Rites are a perfect companion band to this one. Fans of Whitesnake and Dio and even Deep Purple will appreciate this release. It's a high recommendation for those seeking a familiar style brought to you by a new face. Check it out.
Great Album, from Start to Finish.......2005-07-05
I've been a fan of this band since last year when I bought the previous release "the Burning." I thought that album was a good album, but was mainly carried by four songs (especially Forth Into the Black). But this album is so much better. I bought this one and was completely blown away.
1. Tool of the Devil - the Single off the album and perhaps the best song the band has done to date. Hell, it's one of my favorite songs from anyone.
2. Without Wings - A fast number with some brilliant guitar work.
3. Liquid of the Kings - Pretty much done in the same vain as Without Wings.
4. I Will Come Again - An obvious highlight of the album with a real good message. It's sort of a mid tempo song, along the lines of Crusader's Anthem by Dream Evil or Children of the Damned by Iron Maiden.
5. Welcome to the Real - Kind of a semi-ballad, notable for the catchiest guitar riff on the whole album. Overall, one of the highlights.
6. the Last Song - Kind of a neoclassical number, thanks to the keyboards. Another highlight.
7. Another Time - The ballad on the album and one of the weaker tracks but still good.
8. Feed the Fire - The fastest track on the album. It's another highlight and likely to get stuck in the listeners head.
9. Weight of the World - It's another fast song, one of the weaker tracks (still enjoyable though).
10. Land of Innocence - The only song that comes close to Tool of the Devil. It was written for the late Dimebag Darryl and is the epic on the album. It also has a very infectious chorus.

This CD will change your life!.......1998-11-27
I read a review of their live show when they played in New York at Coney Island High, it intrigued me enough to buy the album when I saw it as I was browsing for new music. The CD went into my stereo and my room was set on musical fire, as I enjoyed the reminiscent sounds of the Stooges meets the GunClub and The Jesus and Mary Chain, in some sort of VooDoo rite.
